"Freedom! '90" (also known simply as "Freedom!") is a song written, produced, and performed by George Michael, and released on Columbia Records in 1990. The "'90" added to the end of the title is to prevent confusion with a hit by Michael's former band Wham!, also entitled "Freedom". The song's backing beat is a sample from James Brown's song "Funky Drummer".[1]
It was the third single taken from Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, though released as the second single from the album in the US and Australia. "Freedom! '90" was one of a few uptempo songs on this album. It was a major hit and peaked at No. 8 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song refers to Michael's past success with Wham!, yet also shows a new side of himself as a new man, who is more cynical about the music business than he had been before. Michael refused to appear in the video and allowed a group of supermodels to appear instead.
A music video for the song went into heavy rotation on MTV. It was remastered for the 2017 documentary, George Michael: Freedom.[2] On 30 October 2020 it premiered on TH-cam in 4K for its 30th anniversary.[3] Michael performed this song, alongside his 2012 single "White Light", during the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.

George hated the way his former record label had "packaged" him, and he felt oppressed by it. This video was George taking ownership of his own image. He burned the leather jacket he'd been forced to wear in previous videos, he blew up the jukebox, and in the biggest "f*** you" to the record label, he didn't appear in the video. (But ingeniously brought in a bunch of supermodels to replace him, so people would still want to watch it on repeat.) Last but not least, the music -- the song itself is beautiful and soulful, this is my favorite GM song.

    • @Cummley
      @Cummley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

George wasn't forced to wear the jacket. He wasn't forcibly packaged either.
He decided he didn't want to be a superstar sex symbol anymore and wanted to reduce his profile. His falling out with the label was because they wanted him to continue the previous image (which George had created).
Basically he wanted to be a global megastar in the same league as Madonna, MJ and Prince. When he made it to that level with his Faith album and the image HE had created, he decided he didn't want that anymore. Obviously his label wasn't happy because the Faith image was major money maker.

This was the begining of the era of the supermodels. George Michael saw the five of them on the cover of Vogue and as he didn't wish to appear in the video put them into it instead. Later Linda, Naomi, Christy and Cindy famously walked the runway at Versace miming this song, it's a seminal moment in fashion history of the 90's.

That was the best idea George could come up with. You don't want to be in a video? Just hire the biggest supermodels on the planet. Brilliant move 👍. I would have even had ideas on what the potential videos for each single from the "Listen Without Prejudice" album could have looked like 😉. In general, I think it's remarkable that George Michael sold so many records, not only from this album but also from the ones that followed, considering that he did quite little promotion compared to other pop stars or never toured for years. That shows how great his music was.

This is the famous video with all of the supers: Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford and Tatjana Patitz. This was during the time when the supermodels were everywhere and they were among the most famous women in the world. It is a beautifully shot video and a song that sounds as good today as it did when it as released.

George has a hit song with Wham from the 80’s also entitled “Freedom “ which is why this song is called “Freedom 90” to distinguish the two. Both “Freedoms” are “10’s across the board” in my humble opinion. Thanks for another great reaction, and Happy Holidays, Empress!

David Fincher cited that to adding the jacket, guitar and jukebox to he used in the ''Faith'' video was his idea with explosion all of them when the choir sing ''FREEDOM'', and George approved that idea. George cited that was symbol appuyed the personal theme of the song to he wanted and how he wanted to not continue his image to he created in the ''Faith'' era.
It's was one of the two only funky song of the album ''Listen Without Prejudice'' (the other was ''Soul Free'') and sonically, it's remains of the sound of the album ''Faith''. He planned originally a part 2 of this album (since it's was titled part 1 originally in original released in 1990, but update later has just the title ''Listen Without Prejudice''), but abandonned the idea because of his conflict with Sony. This was the second single of the album, after ''Praying for Time''. Like the first single, it's was a worldwide hit. Strange thing, in his native UK, this song not reaching the top 20, but in US, this was a huge hit, reaching n.8. Depist George didn't have many n.1 like in the 80's (remember ''Faith'' and his four n.1 singles of this album), he continued to receive success in the 90's, depist it's not the level of ''Faith'' and produced many top 10 between 1990 and 1996 (until ''Fastlove'' who it's was to date not only his last top 10 single in US, but also his last song ever to charting in),

  • @petersavieri

I mean… THIS SONG IS THE DEFINITION OF FIRE BOP ❤️‍🔥 It’s almost illegally funky and moves with such energy, and while George’s vocals hit that tight and masterful rhythm and adlib with his effortless free-form soulfulness, his lyrics tell the story of his gratitude for the great experiences he’d had with his friend Andrew in WHAM! (“What a kick just a buddy and me”) but his deep frustration and intense need to deconstruct and destroy his now world mega famous image as the pop hunk who had vehemently denied being gay and sacrificed a lot of his personal truth in exchange for fame.
The chorus “Freedom, I won’t let your down/I will not give you up/Gotta have some FAITH in the sound/It’s the one good thing that I’ve got” speaks of both his artistic confidence and his very real fear that if he is honest about his life, he might lose his fans and all he’d worked so hard to achieve. People lost their entire careers for being gay in those days, especially if the public felt “fooled” by someone they found attractive. Gay people were widely viewed as not quite as human as straight people, so there was a big risk that his straight fans would dump him as though he had no right to sing of love when his personal experience of love was “sick”. Horrible to say it, but this really was the overarching view of most of the general public toward us. And though vastly improved, it’s still a fight today, when an artist like Lil Nas X is pilloried by conservatives and seen as brave by progressives, because the potential for pigeon-holing, alienation and career sabotage is still very real for LGBTQ artists who dare to be honest.
George was about to go into serious contractual conflict with his label Sony, as he fought to gain more creative control and to be honest about his sexuality and his deeper self in general.
The strategy was brilliant. George had the idea to cast the supermodels after seeing the iconic Peter Lindbergh photo of them all together, so he cast Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford in place of himself (along with a few hot male models) to satirise the shallowness of the media machine that pushes attractiveness above art. They were already regarded as Supermodels, but this video sent their fame stratospheric.
The video is directed by the great David Fincher, which is why it’s so damn GOOD. Of course the burning and fiery detonation of the jacket, guitar and jukebox from the FAITH video that made him an international megastar is a statement of purging the past and moving on. But the song brings both epic sass and a deep sense of anxiety for the future, and that complexity along with its irresistible 🔥 are what make it one of the greatest pop songs, pop MOMENTS, of all time.
The breakdown and bridge section says it best. After pairing back to not much more than that that wildly funky guitar and a bit of percussion, George slides into his key lines:
Well it looks like the road to Heaven
But it feels like the road to Hell
When I knew which side my bread was buttered
I took the knife as well
    Posing for another picture
    Everybody’s got to sell
But when you shake your ass
    They notice fast
And some mistakes were built to last
That’s what you get for changing your mind
    And after all this time
    I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man

IN interview, George said that this was his decision to not appear in the video, because he wanted to take more seriously in a artist and he engaged the models to lip-synch at his place. This song was very personal to him and was a look a his celebrity and is anxiety during the ''Faith'' era and how he wanted to freedom to his celebrity. The ''Faith'' Tour make him so tired and his family miss him so much, so he wanted to not promoted his second album so much like he have with ''Faith'' and appreciate in a serious artist. The second album ''Listen Without Prejudice'' was a huge departure of her sound of the ''Faith'' album and he didn't promoted so much the album. This was courageous to him to make his music in a another direction. This album have only two funk songs in the album (Freedom 90 and Soul Free) and theses two remained at the ''Faith'' era, the rest was hugely influenced by the soft-rock and adult contempory format. In fact, this album did well, depist it's was not promoted so much, with ''Praying on Time'' and ''Freedom 90'' was since very popular worldwide and sold well in the circustances. The first reaching n.1 in US and the second was also a worldwide hit and the video of ''Freedom 90'' became influencal to many. The burning of jacket and jukebox was in fact a thing to said ''i was done with the ''Faith'' era'' and theses two was in the ''Faith'' video. Many years later, in the tv biography of 2007, he said that he regret his decision to sued Sony Music (because the sales was not huge like the ''Faith'' album) and he felt so much guilty about that because he said how he was so bad at this time with the record company and he return with Sony when he recording the ''Patience'' album, but not regret the video, because it's was a symbol for him to he not in this image anymore.
The video was directed by David Fincher, the same who direct ''Express Yourself'', ''Oh Father'' and ''Bad Girl'' by Madonna.
Many CD stores in US promoted hugely the album. For example, the Towel Records (biggest CD store in the US) have a giant poster in the wall outside the store before the released of the album. Céline Dion took the pictures of that, because she released the same day in US her first english album ''Unison'' and her poster of her Unison cover also appear in the same place of the ''George Michael'' giant poster of his second album. She was in this store the first day of the released of the album.

First should be noted that David Fincher directed this sublime video.
GM had grown resentful of his pretty boy image and refused to appear. And the use of supermodels seemed to be a commentary on the fact that, largely because of the video medium, a beautiful or sexy image was regarded as almost a necessity to sell a song.
The supermodels were already a thing, thanks in large part to designers like Karl Lagerfeld and Gianni Versace. But for many folks who weren't "fashion people" this video is probably what they are truly remembered for.
Personally my favorite was, and is, Linda Evangelista...the blond with the great haircut in the black sweater.
Also the destruction of the GM "iconography" from the Faith video...the jacket, jukebox and guitar...was a further symbol of GM's rejection of his past image. Interestingly (to me anyway) Madonna did a similar thing in an early 2000s photo shoot with edgy fashion photographer Steven Klein where she was shot alongside a burning wedding dress.

This was George saying a big FU to Fony (Sony) n he did. George went on to do things HIS way Sony wanted him to do another pop Faith album. He said he couldn’t write like that anymore. He ended up writing, singing, producing some of his best songs. He was one of the best. That’s y he burnt the leather jacket, blew up the juke box, etc.

In this case it would have made sense to watch the video for "Faith" first, his first solo hit after Wham!.
The things he blows up here (leather jacket, music box and guitar) are all relicts from that video and to him represented his old image.

"I came to the set on the first day they were shooting," Naomi Campbell told . "Oh my god, it was crazy! It was during the fashion collections, so I came straight from Paris, and I'd done four or five shows the day before and we finished at 2 o'clock in the morning." "First and foremost was the song itself and the message and declaration of “freedom” for George himself. At the time, I’m not sure I realized the longevity and impact of this video, but obviously, it’s still a favorite." --Says Cindy Crawford. "[George] thought it would make us into a big deal, that it would be good for us. I was like, 'Please, we're here. We've already arrived!'" she says at the time, referring to the the dizzying heights of fame the girls had reached in the early '90s. Shot in an assuming building in Merton, London, the supermodels all arrived to shoot their scenes on different days on the "huge, dark and smoky set", flying in from different parts of the world to take part. "All the models and I knew George Michael-I think I had done a photo shoot with him at some point before." Tatjana Patitz remembers about arriving on set to shoot the video. "When I shot my segment it was just me on the sound stage in London...I was up against the wall in this leopard robe. "The hairdresser did my hair really curly-I was like, are you trying to make me look like I put my fingers in a socket? And then [Director David Fincher] also had me lie on that chaise-lounge and smoke." "Someone explained to me that my first shot would be in a bathtub," recalls Cindy Crawford. "They oiled me up and put me in an empty tub with a smoke machine to look like steam. I had to sit on an apple crate because you couldn't see me over the edge of the tub."
