  • This is a 'How to' video on producing a decorative Brass Plate finish to metal objects at home.
    For this video, we coated a steel door sign in brass, which only took around 10 minutes.
    The part or object you are heating up will get very hot, so make sure that you are wearing heat proof PPE as well as keeping any flammables away from the area you are working in.

    I swear this is the best and easiest method. Funny enough I stumbled on brass plating my tools. I was soaking in vinegar bath for 2 days and after all black gunk was gone, I hit with a brass wire 9n the drill and it came up with a brass finish! Cheers

      Same! I was restoring an old gouge and noticed it turned yellow 😅 that was without heat though

    This is not brass plating.
    This is a nice job of giving a brass appearance.

    I did this on one of my helmets. But this is a really good tutorial, short and to the point, well done

      How did it go with the helmet? I'm thinking about refinishing a thin round plated item but worried about the heat warping it

    Does it patina like pure brass does? Or do these brushes use some impure brass alloy? Never seen the bristles on these brass brushes tarnish.

    don't use a brass brush with a plastic handle, it will melt and fall apart quickly but wood handled brass brushes are getting hard to find....

      I soaked my rusty tools in vinegar bath for 2 days and after all black gunk was cleaned off with a cloth, I hit with a brass wire brush on my dremel. No heat and bright shiny finish. Just keep wiping clean vinegar and you will see how golden it comes up. I did 2 sets of electricians pliers and jewlers vise! The more black gunk you get off with vinegar and rags the better it comes up! Also dip the bristles from the brass wire brush in vinegar. When finished I dipped in soda bicarbonate and rinsed with distilled water. Even tap water is ok. The pliers I put a clear coat of enamel and bake with a heat gun a little. The jewellery vise? I sprayed with a lubricant/ rust preventative. Wd40 or INOX MX3 brand is the best I found! Good luck and take care!🙂👍👍👍

    Is it easy to remove the brass coating?? Wanna do in one of my chisels but I'm afraid it'll lose the coat if I clean it

    • @albvscommesincastello6346
      @albvscommesincastello6346 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      be careful since while heating the chissel you can easilly heat threat it and it will lose its hardness.

    I’m trying to do this with galvanized sheet metal and it’s not working at all. It seems like the steel sheet is plating the brush instead of the other way around. :(
    Is there something else I can try?

    • @evergreenforgeworks9491
      @evergreenforgeworks9491 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Don't get galvanized steel really hot! It gives off toxic fumes that are really dangerous. You can get sheet metal that isn't galvanized and you'll probably get the results you're looking for and you won't risk exposing yourself to toxic metal poisoning

    I bet it would stick on better if you gave it a coat of borax paste flux and bring it up to bubbling temps. It would be stuck on permanent almost like brazing.

    • @troytaylor1913
      @troytaylor1913 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Borax is a ant and roach killer I just add a little water and use it for a paste flux for silver soldering. It's cheap and the same thing as something labled paste flux online. I use it for electroplating.

    A couple of questions!
    Does this work on aluminum?
    Does this work on metals comprised of various alloys?
    Also, once the finish is achieved…is it necessary to spray it with a clear coat?

    Not really brass plating, is it? You've cleaned up a part that was solid brass, yes?

    • @GamerBuilder1337
      @GamerBuilder1337 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is plating, the brass is transferred from the bristles to the part, because of the heat.
