    Absolutely beautiful. Seeing this labor intensive process, it is understandable why chrome plating is expensive. That doesn't even consider the HazMat costs associated with operating with all the chemicals involved.

    Did plating for 12 years. A lot of custom parts for show cars and bikes. It’s very labor intense. Polishing after copper is the trick.

    Ive been in the plating business for 35 years and never heard someone falling into a tank ever. Even if some did fall into a tank, all plating facilities have a safety protocol and emergency showers for protection of personnel. The tanks are heated but not boiling. Yes, plating is an aggressive industrial procedure. And all precautions are used for the the safety of people and enviroment.

      Haha these ppl worried about falling in. I never heard of that but I bet it has happend. They should be worried about all the different acids we deal with like hydroflouric acid. As well as many others. There's a lot of nasty stuff in plating. They also might be interested in the fact gold platers deal with cyanide and have to be really attentive in a shop with cyanide and hydrochloric acid. Because the two mixed create the famous death chamber gas. Once that gas is let off you're dead in 30 to 45 mins and the fire Department is the only one with the anecdote. Usually they only have so many shots. Its a crazy job. Thats why I wrap cars now. I live in AZ and summers in a plating shop arr ridiculous at 5 in the morning within seconds your drenched with sweat. And steaming tanks and fumes. Kinda shitty. But I do love to plate.

    Those copper wheels where off a 3rd gen Escalade. I love those wheels!

  • @RedlineRossi
    @RedlineRossi 11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Yes, this process is copper, nickel, chrome.
    The first wheel you see is copper plated. The second one is nickel plated, which he then puts it into the chrome solution.
    The gold coating is purely the chrome solution itself and is not a cosmetic alternative.
    Hope this helps :)

    Plastic as custom is complicated as plastic finishing is meant for production runs. There are two methods : #1 - conductive paint application (silver being the best ) then electroless copper then you go to the regular Plating process. Using bright nickle Plating then chrome Plating Plastic needs to be strip to a virgin state with out warping.

    hi guys . nice work
    important . when working with acid and caustic solutions
    fold the last 2-3 inches of your gloves back over its self .
    this creates a large V where acids / liquids get caught/pool rather than running down your glove and off the back . and when you lower your hand it runs back out .

      toothbrush or small bottle brush on an electric drill. But it's always best to finish off by running the correct thread tap through it to make sure the thread is OK.Even better is to close off the bolt holes beforehand with silly putty or something.

    metal finishing a definitely an aggressive process and does have metal finishing sounds. But note that all the tanks are make of plastic and or lined with a plasitc liners. Even though aluminum is considered a soft metal, aluminum alloy - this metal can handle grinding, polishibg and plating procedures. If aluminum handles rotation on the road, freeway, and supporting your vehicle...it can handle metal finishing.

  • @aliciachrome
    @aliciachrome  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Metal finishing is an aggressive process and yes there is noise in the procedure. No wheel is damage because the tanks have a protective liner and or made of plastic.

These reports are reviewed by epa and air pollution. All untreated waste is hauled away for a fee and treated or recycled.

      +Angel Santos we get alot of request for polish copper plating on wheels, however this finish in not recommended for durabity. Copper finished tarnishes pretty quickly so you have to hand polish every month. You can also apply a clear lacquer or acrylic clear but even then the wheel may stay shiny for a few years in a museum like setting. as long as your aware that copper plating tarnishes.

      +LM Chrome Corp what's the difference between chrome plating process and spray on chrome ? What better or is it the same thing ?

    • @aliciachrome
      @aliciachrome  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      chrome plating here is an (electroplating) electro chemical deposition process which goes into actual plating process tanks than a series of rinses/neutralizers in order to not cross contaminate the baths. Spray on paint is organic spray application with suspended color pigmentation mix with adhesives and then possibly baked or cured with a clear coat (possibly) Spray on maybe an excellent option on plastics, low stressed metal parts, interior parts that are not rubbed on, ornaments, grills...or for a display only use vehicle.

  • @aliciachrome
    @aliciachrome  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah. Metal polishing and plating is an aggressive procedure. We process 100 to 300 wheels a day. Impact on wheels do not dents because the tanks are plastic or Lined w rubber liners.

    Beautiful work .Do you do old 1940s bicycle parts ? I'm restoring an old bicycle and there's no one in England that's capable of the job. I know it'll be expensive but ive no other choice. It involves nuts and bolts ,peddle cranks,handlebar brackets etc. Sadly no company in the UK can take this job on even though I do the grinding and polishing myself.

      dont grind or polish anything yourself, you will just cause more problems for the plater, i always use ULTRACHROME in Osborne park Western Australia, fantastic results>

    What's Triple Chrome Plating? Does that mean it has to go threw the whole process three times? What's the advantage of triple chrome plating? Thank you. Great Video!

    just wondering, I want to get my 1993 mustang cobra intake chromed, now could the heat from plating cause the intake to warp, I understand when its on the motor it takes heat, it just I am totally out in left field when it comes to plating, thanks for the video ya got me HYPNOTIZED:)

      heydude76 No, the heat required to warp a manifold is far beyond the heating during electroplating. In most cases the solutions are only heated to a temperature of around 150 degrees just to speed up some of the acid processes. not all the solutions are heated. A lot of the tanks were rinse tanks, usually demineralized water. Electroplating would be perfectly safe for your intakes.

      No problem, Im looking to start a gold plating business and also offer a few different coatings as well but I learned that the chemicals for plating real chrome is a little far more extreme than I want to deal with. When you send your intakes in make sure they are plating real chrome. Their are other platings that mimic chrome and look great but don't hold up as well. Real chrome is a very durable and corrosion resistant metal. Sometimes I see shops offering a chrome plating only to find out that it is a tin/nickel plating. Also another chrome called copy krome. While they still look great they won't last as long as the real chrome. I would like to mention that their is nothing wrong with these other coatings just that the chrome will out last the others under extreme or harsh conditions. My personal favorite is black nickel plating but I have heard that it does not hold up very well, Im hoping to give it a try on a motorcycle fender to see how long it will last before I have to have it replated. I got a little long winded but I hope this helps.

      this totally helps as I talked to the plating company and the guy did say something about the mimic chrome plating, he said it is just as good and bottom line easier for him..... I am taking in the intake tomorrow but I will tell him REAL chrome and will pay for the extra time and effort, its a 1993 mustang Cobra intake and I tried to polish it myself and I totally understand it is a bitch of a job to chrome it up so this will probably be a costly adventure but I want it to look the best it can vanity costs sooooo much money!!

    to avoid cross contamination of the process tanks. that is why water rinse tanks are so important.
