@@theCodyReeder I think cause the bronze is electro plated it didn't get into the tight crevices compared to brass which looks very evenly coated. I'd definitely go with brass
@@theCodyReeder How do you REMOVE iron acetate from something that you have removed rust from? Is there a chemical that removes iron acetate? The piece I'm working on has a lot of internal components that can't be reached with a brush. I removed the rust already but I would like to remove the black iron acetate that has been left behind from the process. I will be electroplating this with zinc, then copper, then aluminum (if possible).
@@Stacy_Smith you can't eletroplate with aluminIum in water, it's too reactive. some researchers at Phillips did pull it of using ionic liquids a few years back, but i don't know what was done with that afterwards.
Try to find out how long it takes to turn copper fully into brass with this method - if that's at all possible past a certain depth and if the so treated metal is weakened or strengthened by the process compared to the original copper.

In my opinion the brass is probably the best option. The pure copper looks cool and so does the zinc coated copper, but the brass is the best for a combination of looks and durability.

Sure, the coating will wear off but that means the rings themselves aren't wearing down and it's providing added chemical resistance in the meantime. That's the point of *armour.* He's adding armour to his armour.
I would go with a darker bronze personally. It is more subtle. The brass is way to flashy and ostentatious. *edit* you could also go with a copper nitrate, ammonia, or borate patina for a green, blue, or red finish. I am not sure how durable it would be, but I think that a blue chain-mail shirt would be awesome.
Since chainmail is battle gear, I'd say go with brass. It's very bright and in battle, the sun would reflect off it and blind your enemies (if you actually had any, but I can't imagine anyone not liking you).
This video is super amazing. To be jonest it's the only place where I've seen start to finish how to get the brass coat (the heating bit). You sir have done the internet a great service, plating copper is very satisfying 🤗
Brass is a nice color, copper second. Brass has lubricating properties which might resist wear to the fabric if it was made thick enough to be durable.
i vote technicolor labcoat with brass, bare copper, bronze, maybe copper oxide if you can make it durable enough, then you can have a rainbow of colours, and it will look badass.
Hey Cody, I'm not quite sure that the tin and copper fused into an bronze. Once claned, bronze is quite golden too. Brass worked wonderfully but the other third is just tin plated copper in my opinion. Maybe you could compare to a piece that didn't go into the oven.
I agree. This method did not work properly for the bronze. It might be easier to make bronze then work it into rings than work copper into rings then trying to add a bronze coating. With his current methods, I say brass because it will probably stay nice the longest and it will be the easiest to turn back to its original condition as it wears down.
My theory is that the oven heat was simply not enough to allow the tin to dissolve into the copper. I'm thinking a torch might be a better heating method for the bronze...
I tried this today, and while i got no reaction without electricity i did get the silver finish that turned into a nice gold after a little heating. Im curious about the reaction here. I used dilute naoh-solution with zincpowder, and copperwire from solenoid. Edit: copperwire as cathode, ~~6v@100ma
I personally prefer the bronze. The brass certainly looks shiny, but to me that just doesn't quite fit, too much bling. The bronze looks way more robust and tough, which I think it should be since it's, well, armour.
The problem I see with that is that if you didn't want it to be silly and pretty, why would you make it out of copper instead of steel in the first place?
Oh I don't know...maybe that steel sucks to join together to make mail...and would most likely need rivets. I mean...it isn't impossible...but i wouldn't want to spend my time on a piece of mail no matter how cool its looks. Buying on the other hand...that i can get behind.
Brass is a no go. I play brass instruments. It is a metal you have to take care. Simple oils from from the human body can tarnish it. I have worn my valve casings on all of my horns just with simple ware. Brass is also is very temperamental in cold weather. I have formed a crack in my bell on my euphonium just by playing it too loud in the winter. Brass is blingy and a has a great harmonic resonance, but I don't believe will make great armour.

@@dimitar4y it would be possible if Cody makes the mail in sheets he could dip sections by folding the sheet mail and plating different parts one at a time. A long square container and some clamps would only be needed to hold the sheet in the solution and plate it, and Cody could change how wide the sections are by putting more or less of the sheet into the solution.
@@dimitar4y the chain mail could be folded and partially submerged for the effect i am talking about. Think of it like this: imagine getting a post it note and folding it in thirds, unravel the note and then dipping the creased areas one at a time in a bowl of water. The tansition areas is apart of the appeal I think to having multiple types of plating.

I find it difficult to remember which metals make which alloys, probably because bronze has a "z" but no zinc. And brass has no "z" but it's made from copper and Zinc. I admit, it's a stupid problem
The brass is stunning, and I wasn't aware it was such a simple effect to achieve. It's very ostentatious though, and would likely encourage more violence against your person rather than prevent it. The bronze definitely requires more research to find out what can be done to mitigate the uncoated patches, if that can be solved in a relatively simple manner then I think that would be the better look if you're planning on this being "stealth" when you're in public places.

Why not go with a combination of the three? I think they all look awesome, and maybe you could use the brass for shiney highlights like the collar or in small strips, for instance at the bottom of the shirt, the copper for the majority of the shirt (because its the easiest to make), so the chest part and back part, and the bronze for the sleeves for example. Of course any combination of locations is possible but this would be my choice😊.
Jimmy Herneheim yes that would also be very cool but I think that that would be tough to do as the solution has to be contained to only the areas of the eagle then. Still an awesome idea though if cody could pull it off!
I like the brass because it looks a lot like gold; but, I also know (from years of polishing my mom's brass candle sticks) that it will also tarnish and lose its gold color. I also liked the tin since it looked like the silver color we are used to from the movies. I would love to see how they look after prolonged oxidation. Could you used an enhanced oxygen environment to accelerate that?
That'd be actually a very neat piece of information and a great idea. I hope Cody notices this comment (bit doubting it tho). And ideally trying other corrisive environments.
The process is rather fast by comparison. Typically it is done with the application of heat and small amounts of vinegar and salt to achieve what is called BRASS VERDIGRIS.
Ive applied a variety of oxide finishes or patinas over a variety of metals over the years. Many of them can be achieved using common household chemicals.
I like the bronze coat, the color is very aesthetically pleasing and the fact that it didn't quite take to the weld joints gives it a very organic aged quality
I used to 'turn copper coins into gold' using the zincate solution in my chemistry classes. Students took their gold coins home and rubbed the brass off within hours. Good video.

Tundra1232 he electroplated the copper with tin and zinc respectively, both of which form alloys with it. When he heated it, they fused into the alloys leaving what we see in the video
Basically he ran an electric current through a solution of dissolved metal salts. Those positively charged metal salts can take some of the negative electrons moving around in the liquid (from the applied current) and form solid metal coating on the pieces of chain mail. They accumulate over time bit by bit, layer by layer until there's a coat of tin or zinc on the copper. Then once the metal is plated he heated the metals in an oven to create an alloy, or let the metals mix together to give different properties (color, melting point, strength, etc). There's lots of neat videos on youtube with electrochemistry demonstrations and good explanations of how it works physically.
Aah, that explains why you're single. Of course, the aluminum chainmaille I made/wore during my jr/sr year of high school got me precisely zero chicks, so no hard feelings there.
What temperature did you bake that at? I never imagined metals would diffuse together like that at conventional oven temperatures.... now I need to get my chainmail making supplies out again!
It's very pretty, running science demonstrations at a school open day once the teachers coated copper pennies with zinc. Holding them in a blowtorch turned them 'into gold' for the kids. I'd recommend it if you have the time

Both are very corrosion resistant, though I think brass is the better of the two. Copper is often combined with both zinc and tin; tin for strength and zinc for corrosion resistance.
based on my own personal experiences with copper alloys I've made myself and seen the effects of the weather on, brass is definitely more corrosion resistant. I have a couple brass bars and a "pure" copper bar that I've left outside for over a year and the copper has all the colors of oxide on it, while the brass bars look as good as new. Although, I have also left several bullet casings out to see how they compare and they all turned completely green within a couple months. It depends on the exact type of brass you use, i.e. how much zinc is in it

@@davidtaylor2054 diffusion can occur at any temperature (not absolute zero) but it takes a long time, the higher temperature the faster it diffuses and alloys some guy even bonded metals with diffusion by just laying ingots over each other and waited for many years
@@theCodyReeder I was planning to brassplate a piece of wood by first doing copper and then zinc but 300C seems a bit high for wood. How long did you have it in for and would a lower temperature for a longer time allow me to do this?
10,575 likes and 38 dislikes (but why?!) I had no idea zinc plating copper was that easy. It's clever how the zinc essentially makes its own battery and electroplates itself back onto the copper. So elegant, so simple. Lovely job!
It would be better to coat it in chromium. Beryllium would give you a disease called berylliosis and it has no cure other than having your lungs replaced.

Andrew Delashaw Try using google, you’ll find that nickel is recognised as an irritant. Some people can tolerate it, some can’t. The use of nickel is legally regulated in when used in jewellery, I had a cheap watch and the stainless steel back had nickel in the alloy, after a day I’d have an itchy sore under the watch. It’s not a trendy allergy as you imply.

What you SHOULD do is plate your chain mail in BOTH solutions so you look like a striped boss.
That'd be hard. He'd have to split his mail into strips, and it'd be uneven because he has to re-weld pieces and that'd ruin the coating.

I think they all look awesome, and maybe you could use the brass for shiney highlights like the collar or in small strips, for instance at the bottom of the shirt, the copper for the majority of the shirt (because its the easiest to make), so the chest part and back part, and the bronze for the sleeves for example. Of course any combination of locations is possible but this would be my choice😊.
Bronze sleeves with copper body, and brass on all the edges (cuffs, collar, waistband) sounds pretty awesome to me

I like the brass because it looks a lot like gold; but, I also know (from years of polishing my mom's brass candle sticks) that it will also tarnish and lose its gold color.
I also liked the tin since it looked like the silver color we are used to from the movies.
I would love to see how they look after prolonged oxidation. Could you used an enhanced oxygen environment to accelerate that?
That'd be actually a very neat piece of information and a great idea. I hope Cody notices this comment (bit doubting it tho). And ideally trying other corrisive environments.
I've used Hydrogen Peroxide to accelerate the process over brass with reasonable success.

The process is rather fast by comparison. Typically it is done with the application of heat and small amounts of vinegar and salt to achieve what is called BRASS VERDIGRIS.
Ive applied a variety of oxide finishes or patinas over a variety of metals over the years. Many of them can be achieved using common household chemicals.
The blending effect you got between each coating looked really good
I like the bronze coat, the color is very aesthetically pleasing and the fact that it didn't quite take to the weld joints gives it a very organic aged quality

I used to 'turn copper coins into gold' using the zincate solution in my chemistry classes. Students took their gold coins home and rubbed the brass off within hours. Good video.

It's simple, the two metals simply fused at the high temp to create an alloy.
Tundra1232 he electroplated the copper with tin and zinc respectively, both of which form alloys with it. When he heated it, they fused into the alloys leaving what we see in the video
Basically he ran an electric current through a solution of dissolved metal salts. Those positively charged metal salts can take some of the negative electrons moving around in the liquid (from the applied current) and form solid metal coating on the pieces of chain mail. They accumulate over time bit by bit, layer by layer until there's a coat of tin or zinc on the copper. Then once the metal is plated he heated the metals in an oven to create an alloy, or let the metals mix together to give different properties (color, melting point, strength, etc). There's lots of neat videos on youtube with electrochemistry demonstrations and good explanations of how it works physically.

It's very pretty, running science demonstrations at a school open day once the teachers coated copper pennies with zinc. Holding them in a blowtorch turned them 'into gold' for the kids. I'd recommend it if you have the time

Bronze will oxydize quickly, which will actually strengthen it.
Both are very corrosion resistant, though I think brass is the better of the two. Copper is often combined with both zinc and tin; tin for strength and zinc for corrosion resistance.

based on my own personal experiences with copper alloys I've made myself and seen the effects of the weather on, brass is definitely more corrosion resistant. I have a couple brass bars and a "pure" copper bar that I've left outside for over a year and the copper has all the colors of oxide on it, while the brass bars look as good as new. Although, I have also left several bullet casings out to see how they compare and they all turned completely green within a couple months. It depends on the exact type of brass you use, i.e. how much zinc is in it

@@davidtaylor2054 diffusion can occur at any temperature (not absolute zero) but it takes a long time, the higher temperature the faster it diffuses and alloys
some guy even bonded metals with diffusion by just laying ingots over each other and waited for many years

I had no idea zinc plating copper was that easy. It's clever how the zinc essentially makes its own battery and electroplates itself back onto the copper. So elegant, so simple.

What other metals could you coat the rings in? Is there any way you could coat them in beryllium?
It would be better to coat it in chromium. Beryllium would give you a disease called berylliosis and it has no cure other than having your lungs replaced.

Try using google, you’ll find that nickel is recognised as an irritant. Some people can tolerate it, some can’t.
The use of nickel is legally regulated in when used in jewellery, I had a cheap watch and the stainless steel back had nickel in the alloy, after a day I’d have an itchy sore under the watch.
It’s not a trendy allergy as you imply.
