  • The Blaze Taito Super Pocket (Hyper Mega Tech) not only sports 18 Taito arcade games, save states, scan lines, variable difficulty, and an included rechargeable battery, but also allows for expansion with already-established Blaze Evercade cartridges! Could this flavor of cart-based handheld be the net to take the market by storm? We run it through its pace to find out in this product review.

    I'm Gen Z, and my dad is a boomer. Our middle ground is Gen X culture. I appreciate these games being preserved for my generation, as these were the games I was introduced to growing up. I also like the easy difficulty, because I'm disabled. This will make for a great late birthday gift for my father, and also for myself. Thanks for the video, I appreciate it.

      To serve as the proverbial devil on your shoulder, I've had mine for about 2 weeks and love it so far. Been aware of Evercade for a while, but didn't bite for one reason or another and this seemed a great way to try it out at a reasonable price. I am now a regular on the official Discord and have purchased 5 cartridges with plans for many more as well as an Evercade VS.
      Mine has worked wonderfully thus far, but I have hears there may be some quality control issues with the Super Pocket line. Luckily, Blaze Entertainment is evidently very responsive and helpful when it comes to customer service, so if you end up with a defective unit, they should take good care of you.

I love the modern mix with the retro feel of cartridges and the old school games. Such a great product for the price. @@dreadtheweekend no, they've released a lot of cartridges this year and products. Easily, their most productive year. I would think they may have some Taito carts planned maybe for the future. They've done a decent job in giving monthly updates and free games too.

    Great review, I had a feeling you were going to be reviewing this unit. I already have an Evercade XP which is a larger and very high quality portable unit that also allows for TATE vertical mode, so I had initially thought I didn’t need this one as nice as it looked. However, after seeing it in action in your review I’m definitely getting one now as a more compact back up unit that would be convenient during work breaks or before bed. It also helps that Evercade does not currently have the Taito collection in cartridge form so that makes it even more tempting. Plus as you said, being able to expand with existing cartridges on these various Evercade devices is so nice. I have three Evercade carts (Irem arcade collection 1 and Toaplan arcade collections 1&2) which I’d love to try on this. And I gotta say, I love the Evercade cartridges, they look really nice, they add a “premium collectibility” feel to the product line and the glossy clamshell cases they come in look great on a shelf. Also did not realize until seeing your review that it’s only $60. Yeah, definitely getting this. I can also vouch that Blaze has great customer support for their Evercade devices and are quick to listen to feedback.

      I bought the Taito one mate because it's just so cute and cool, plus how often do Taito sell their games? If you time it right you can get a tonne of old Capcom games from Steam for about 40 Quid in one hit, and there's a lot of 'em including all 12 on the Super Pocket plus the extra 6 on the EXP, shoot a few weeks ago they had them all individually for 64p-84p a pop on single purchases (my preferred way to purchase). That just made the choice a no brainer for me.

      Check out Crazyburger, he specialises in Evercade and he's just done a series reviewing all the carts for use on the Super Pocket 5 carts at a time, some games need a bigger screen and 1 just flat out isn't compatible (Cathedral I think). The speakers on this tiny device sound great even after being picked up by a camera microphone and then processed again when the video was encoded. I love the Taito edition logo. There's an emerging market for Evercade carts, believe it. Since that's the case, things like this limited edition hardware will surely increase in value (though why would anyone who loved the thing sell?). It could have been even better if the colors matched the Taito arcade logo or had some of their famous protagonists like Pocky, the Kiwi, Bub / Bob, etc. printed on the device.

    Taito forever! 👾 I'm already an Evercade owner, but this device offers an insane amount of pros for the price so I've bought it several weeks ago. It's little but comfy. The only cartridge that won't work on the Hyper Mega Tech devices is the Cathedral game on the dual Alwa's Awakening/Cathedral cartridge and that's so damn strange, because...yeah, Cathedral is based on Evercade hardware so I can accept that it won't be capable to run on this little handheld, but the Duke Nukem remasters are also based on Evercade's hardware (for what I know about) and they run perfectly on this device! Strange things.

      A lot of these devices use a li-ion battery. Unscrew the back and search the model number or power ratings written on the battery. Form factor is another thing that matters, but usually there are posts on forums and reddits that are easily google-able with the right search terms which will guide you to the exact battery you need and places where you can buy it. Li-ion batteries are easy to find replacements and shouldn't cause any anxiety about replacing them unless you are anxious about using a screwdriver.

    I really love this thing. Great features and size. There's one issue though: they should have put the screen the middle with the controls at the sides because the controls are very cramped. The shoulder buttons are absolutely impossible to reach. I don't have giant hands (average build) but my hands are still much too large for this thing. It's going to be a backback device. I don't see myself spending a ton of time with this which is a shame.

    • @darthwiizius
      @darthwiizius 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm specifically avoiding games that use the shoulders, I might see if someone makes some button mods to replace the OG ones, if I had a 3D printer I'm fairly sure I could resolve the issue which I find really acute with the left shoulders that badly conflict with the D-pad. Other than that it's a great little thing that's truly jeans pocket friendly.

There so many new devices, thousands of models and releases becomes sth so common, perhaps with few exceptions like Sony Playstation etc. Good that there are at least some companies which makes us excited. Well,yes I bought one cause I only have the original one and don't have a computer to do updates and don't even know anyone willing to do that for me , so I figured this will be compatible with all the games for a while. I'm also on a tight budget and it's a good value, however the screen is a little small for game like final void and the buttons are stiff and it's a little heavy. I want to get a vs. one day but I heard it could need updates, even initially to be able to use it right out of the box. Another thing is that they seem to be years behind on some things, like mostly 25- 38 year or older games and no anoloug stock, which makes me think that they are going to stick with mostly very old games. I know that they have indie games ,but they are to me only 2 carts and several hit or miss titles, but for now I will stick with evercade cause they are trying to get lesser known games I think and their carts are not real expensive for multiple games on most of them.

      Actually Kiki is the preliminary game on which the Pocky series is based. You could say it's a prequel, but I think it's more accurate to describe it as almost a preview for what the series would become. The GBA Pocky & Rocky is based on this original arcade game, if I remember correctly. It's odd that Taito didn't license some of their console games as the Pocky & Rocky games have as they have much charm and hidden secrets as Bubble Bobble and some of their other arcade games.

    You keep saying 18 games, but really, aside from 2 or 3 like Elevator Action and Bubble Bobble, it is really scraping the bottom of the Taito barrel. Include Phoenix, Qix, Jungle Hunt, Mr. Do! and Zookeeper, and then they can brag about how many games are built in. But it seems they intentionally left out most of the best known Taito games to sell later in cartridges. So it is not only 50% more money, but they then want more later for the games most people will want.
    But really...someone give me a way to play Front Line with controls that are at least somewhat like the arcade, and I will pay $60 for it alone.

    this 18 build in games have also multiplayer games which only work on evercade vs but will never work because they dont make a cartridge.... so singleplayer only for games which are made for 1-2 players... i want really to like the evercade, the cartridges and manuals are well made but why? why putting 2 players games exklusiv on a singleplayer handheld instead of the evercade vs? and this buttons are looking terrible, i love the original evercade with his own look and buttons and the evercade vs controllers too but this monstrosity is just a rip off gameboy with extrabuttons to milk extra cash from the customers with the 3. handheld... maybe the 4.handheld will be a nintendo switch rip off, so you can dock it on a evercade docking station and connect vs controller.

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I see your point, but it doesn't match my experience. None of the 2-player games here require two players, but allow them. Primarily, I consider a handheld device to be a solitary experience so I wouldn't expect to be looking for multiplayer support. It would be nice and I mentioned as much, but it's not enough to make it a "monstrosity rip-off." Thank you for watching and sharing your opinion!

    • @zombos22222
      @zombos22222 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the steamdeck,nintendo switch/lite both have multiplayer local support and are handhelds too but i understand your point for the handheld itself as classic singleplayer only console, but even retro handhelds trying in the past to add multiplayer, look at "sega nomad" working mega drive cartridges and a 2 player port for playing together. This games build in games should have the ability to be shared on the evercade vs its just a waste for this multiplayerfeature arcade feeling. In the old days beeing in arcade and playing lonely waiting for a friend to put extra coins inside and beat a hard boss together is a great experience and they just take it away and making this games uncomplete its like you going to mcdonalds pay for a burger and the seller just bite into your burger and give it to you after, its not complete.. and this support is robotic and not helpful, feels like they dont care.@@GenXGrownUp
