I've been seeing that many people are interested in this more than the 2600+ because of the SD slot. As long as other controllers work like the Xbox ones, that make it worth it
The 2600+ is not to be compared with this baby as the 2600+ is for Atari 2600 fans like me for example for the following reasons: I don´t care about the 7800. I love the Atari 2600 LEGO graphics (I´m talking about its bigger playfield blocks, YEP) it´s iconic and leaves you with imagination. I love its 2 channel short circuit like sounds, love the square waves too. I love its cheerful and colorful 128 color palette. Love how simple it is to play the games. I love how I will be able to reunite (go back in time) with my 2600 as I did for the first time in 1984. I love the fact I can grab, kiss and smell the real things (console, box, carts, plastic, manuals, etc), not experience a virtual emulator. I am very happy to know Atari will support the 2600+ and allow for new games to be released to it. This Game Station are for you who likes the physical stuff too BUT are eclectic with games (want a lot of different systems in one system). i would not mind having the station either, but for now I am ok just wishig for my 2600+.
@@AloanMoreira1 I agree, I have the 2600+ on pre-order as well. I wasn't initially interested in the Gamestation Pro, but with being able to add various platforms of games and other possibilities with controllers, makes it worth getting for those reasons.
Picked one of these up today at Costco, and the controllers are pretty laggy when I use them wireless. Plugged into the USB-C ports in the front of the console, and they’re amazing. Now I just have to get some longer cables so I can sit on my comfy couch and play. It’s great to play Atari 2600 and 7800 games with a proper joystick again, as I sold my 7800 system a few years ago. I was also able to sync my 8bitdo Pro 2 controller using my 8bitdo wireless adapter 2 with a USB to USB-C adapter, and it worked flawlessly. You just have to set the controller to x output.
Oh, really. My Arcade reported that the joysticks would always talk wirelessly whether plugged in or not, but your observations suggest otherwise. Thanks for the info! Also, can you share your 8BitDo setup with me via email? I tried one and it didn't work, but I'm still looking for the best possible solution. Does yours do button remapping/swapping? Hit me up, please, at jon@genxgrownup.com
I put the wrong setting in my previous comment. The switch on the bottom of my 8BitDo controller is set to “A” when using it with the wireless adapter 2. Sorry!!🤓
Great video, thanks! Seems to get better and better. Not sure why so many people out there are trashing it. Would be nice if the stretching was addressed for accurate representation. Anyone know if this supports ColecoVision?
@@GenXGrownUp I hope so too. Since they only ship to the US, I have to use a US shipper to Canada company, which can be pricey going across the border. To get an Atari VCS last year, I had to do the same thing.
This is a good find and it's interesting information. Personally, I'm going to stick to retropie on a Raspberry Pi because of the menus, artwork, etc. I am looking forward to the Atari Plus.
Isn't the Raspberry Pi mostly for people who like too tinker and build their own emu consoles ? This more of a plug n play with a SD slot. Raspberry Pi seems like it would be more work for a Noobies.
The Atari Plus is a far more limited system than this... no SD slot, cartridges only, no homebrew support... why would you look forward to a more expensive, more limited system?
Thanks for the video. Me. I would only put atari games on the sd card. Hopefully a firmware upgrade will let us have folders. Would also loke the firmware to have a save feature for these games.
Thanks for this video! However, with my unit (purchased at Costco about 2 weeks ago) with firmware 1.20, this doesn't work. Can you tell me what firmware version your unit has?
@@livinglarge6337 I am having the exact same issue, I can load save states but I cannot get that sd card selection screen to come up even when labeling the folder like he did and I am only using 2600 rom files
Costco in Plano, TX has a stack of them and we just picked one up for $79.99. Good initial impressions but I am loving all the new info you are providing!
Thanks so much for this how-to video! I am recommending to have separate SD cards based on what system one wants to play (Atari on one card, Arcade on another, etc.) That will make loading and running games much easier. Jon, did Atari Lynx games work on this console?
Excellent video as always. However if you are into this stuff you already have several hardware that are running all of these roms/emulators already. Its cool but a pass for me as it doesnt bring anything new to the game and the controller is cumbersome for any non Atari games. Love your stuff
the diff is your playing on this stuff with the possibility of playing with a 2600 joystick(ish).. instead of a d-pad. Brings back nearly the exact 400/800 experience on many 5200 games.
You're assuming too much. I'm into this stuff because I'm an old Gen-Xer with fond memories and nostalgia for these games with a desire to play them again.... ...and I don't have any of this stuff. I'm confident I'm not the only person like this. I was debating between a 2600+ or the GSP, but I chose the latter because of information from this channel. My GSP is on pre-order.
I have the GSP on my Christmas list and hoping the hubby gets it for me. I was a pro at Kaboom on my 2600 (thought I saw it included on the newer GSP that's out now, but will put the rom on a microSD if needed). I also made it to end of Pitfall back in the day. Got the 2600 for Christmas back in 1982.
Excellent! When adding Kaboom, be sure to check the updated firmware video to ensure you're able to play with the paddle. th-cam.com/video/eHWGigO0M7Q/w-d-xo.html
Battlezone supported? I'm an old phart who remembers dropping many a quarter during lunch hours! Loved that game! Thank you, Jon. Enjoyed the reviews!!
I have one of these. The games were fun. I had no idea you could add more. I did not read that in the instructions. I am gonna go look right now. Thank you for this video. I appreciate you.
I also noticed that the on line user guide says in one sentence to go to the website to learn more about emulation. Nowhere on the website is that talked about. I think they just wanted people to put two and two together and figure it out. The guide gave you one example of how to create folders on your SD card for another purpose but I feel like that is as close as they were gonna get to helping you think outside the box. It even tells you how to format the card and the max size of card.
Can't wait to get mine. Yeah, I have a VCS and it can run circles around the GS Pro, but it's unique, cool, and I just want one. Good deal for 80 to 100 bucks.
Thank you for all that you do! Your videos are very informational and I will be using this as a step-by-step when setting mine up when I finally get one tomorrow night! Thanks again!
I followed your instructions and was able to add a lot of games I was looking for AND some games I completely forgot about. If I can find Donkey Kong, that make it perfect. Thanks so much!!
Got one today. Will be setting it up with Atari ROMs and MAME games and that's it. Nice small device to use. Thanks for the EASY to follow instructions.
Good video, thank you. I had the issue of the SD card not reading when I plugged it in. You have to format the SD card to exFAT- That's what worked for me. Thanks
Thanks for the video! Tried all the different formats, nothing worked. Tried different size cards, no luck. The card was recognized the first time I tried, but will not be recognized after trying every option I could think of. Any ideas?
Awesome! I like your suggestions on file organization. Beats my husband's old C64 "filing" system by a mile LOL! Looking forward to tracking down some old favorites to add for ours.
Thanks for the tutorial. It seems like this console is running something like a pi zero or similar. Reminds me of the Super Retro-Cade that came out a few years ago.
Great video. I picked mine up at Costco earlier this week. Got a chance to put ROMs on a card today. For 2600 games, I tested Tapper and Wizard of Wor with no problem. For a few of the home brews, Defender Arcade and Donkey Kong Arcade worked well. Draconian and Wizard of Wor Arcade did not work. Halo 2600 worked as well. Tried NHL 94 Rom hacks and Tecmo Super Bowl hacks that worked as well. Lots of fun trial and error coming.
I am trying to open the SD card on my Atari GSP but it goes straight to the normal start screen upon start-up. Do you have any advice for me to get this to work?
Tip for all: If you want those added files to truly show up in alphanumeric order, follow these steps: add and sort the "games" folder with the prefixes on your desktop, format the micro SD card (I did exFAT) where it's all going to, and then, and ONLY THEN, drop the whole sorted "games" folder into the micro SD card and ALL your games will show up in true alphanumeric order on the GSP. Can't wait for updated firmware!
That verifies my assumption that the files are sorted by date-created. Get them in the order you like and when they copy on in that order, it's *almost* like they're sorted! 😉
@@GiuseppeDmusic I subscribed thank you!! 🙂OK so I got it to play games on my SD card for my Gamestation Pro !! I didn't have to change any names just drop and play! ➡ One thing... Now that I have 2 games on my SD card when I drop more games to the SD card, my PC says: Some of these files have the same names, skip, ignore, etc. I think its mostly photo files, what can I do to fix this problem? I tried putting each game in separate folders and that didn't work, made the games not play, so what can I do ?? thank you in advanced!! 🙂
@@DarkPitTheFallenAngel I promise I would've mentioned it in the video if required. Later firmware versions extend functionality, but not required for anything you see here.
Thanks for the info. Im new to having these new emulator players and have no idea where to start exactly other than doing research on the subject which I started with TH-cam first and then was going to My Arcade forums if I can find official one. I just ordered a GSP after watching your videos and other Atari fans and game creators were saying really good stuff about it.
Apparently the files are stored on the SD card in the order they were placed in the folder. When you view them in windows they are shown sorted in alphabetical order (by default). However, on Gamestation Pro (and many other devices eg: the C64 SD2IEC floppy drive emulator) they are shown in the actual order that they were written to on the SD card. That means you need to use some sort of utility to copy your selection of folder items one by one in alphabetical order to the sd card, or do them manually one at a time.
Yep. Several viewers have come to the same conclusion. The sequential copy works if your library is complete, but as soon as change is needed, it has to be redone. Fortunately, subfolders are now supported.
I'm for sure waiting for a firmware update that will allow subfolders. Would also be nice to be able to access them from the main GUI and not select on startup.
Thanks for the video! This looks all astonishingly easy if you played around with emulation before, and way more fun than playing games on a computer monitor!
Saw the Gamestation in walmart today didnt pick up since wasnt sure if could add games. Since it is easy to do will pick up next time im in town. Planning on adding all my 2600,5200,7800 games to it. Im not going to bother on other systems due to controllers and have other systems for want this due to control stick and paddle features which necc for atari games
Full subfolder support in latest firmware update (1.30). Setting a folder for each system and then alphabetized subfolders for games makes everything manageable.
I got mine a few days ago, and it's been a delight! Also my 1st dive into NES games. Had a 2600, C64 but then nothing until the SNES. The NES is impressive! Particularly with regard to many of the arcade ports! I've got so many great games to explore! But you sure appreciate the poor button placement in the games that require B and/or C as the primary button. Makes many virtually unplayable. Got my USB - USB C converter on the way. Thanks for the great videos, Jon @genxgrownup 😁

Wellp! I got mine (actually 2 but thats another story) 😂 they work. Now my question is did you download roms to a created file on your computer then transfer them all together to the sd card? Also do you have to download multiple emulators or just one? & which do you recommend? Thanks

I tried Colecovision, but it wouldn't recognize it. Sad. Anyway, I'm getting mono sound out of my bluetooth headphones with this thing. I get stereo on everything else and my raspberry Pi tetrarch rig plays stereo for Atari games. I might be taking this back -- either a bad unit or it plays in mono.
Hope this can be done with 2600+. I still prefer the 2600+ classic look, can’t wait to receive mine. Word on the streets are saying that it has a USB port 🙏🤞
yeah that´s all it needs to be a killer 2600+ they have to think that they need to cater to 2 audiences: those who want physical and those who prefer digital. They both have their rightful thoughts on their choices. I for example would wish to have both roms and Cartridges! If they went with SD support, I believe even people who were into roms, would also venture and try to start with physical and would eventually like that habit just like old times. It´s rather a reconditioning I believe.
It's unfortunate the paddle doesn't work for these. The paddle control is the reason I'm excited about this console. But maybe the games included are enough for paddle games for me.

@@cryptocoffee13 indeed :D
@@AloanMoreira1isn't the 2600+ a actual 2600 Console that plays physical Atari 2600 carts ?
That was my question - fingers crossed that ColecoVision is supported!
I picked up one today and I was wondering the same thing. I'd love to play some Colecovision games!
From your last review of this console, I preordered this machine online, which will start shipping at the end of October.
Hope you enjoy it!
Pi is better supported
Isn't the Raspberry Pi mostly for people who like too tinker and build their own emu consoles ? This more of a plug n play with a SD slot. Raspberry Pi seems like it would be more work for a Noobies.
The Atari Plus is a far more limited system than this... no SD slot, cartridges only, no homebrew support... why would you look forward to a more expensive, more limited system?
The limited nature of it *is* the appeal. Cartridges, controllers, good time@@wolfshanze5980
I’m getting the 2600+ also and the new carts and paddles. Stoked.
What part doesn't work? (I'm on firmware V1.20)
@@GenXGrownUpI never see the screen which allows me to select a game from the sd card

@@livinglarge6337 The folder must exist, and it must contain at least one valid file in order to see the menu.
I created a 'games' folder, and added a homebrew 2600 game I wrote and which works fine in Stella
You're very welcome. I tried Lynx, but couldn't get them to work.
You're awesome for making this. Hope this comment helps the algorithm, I'm going to play so many childhood games again!
My pleasure! I hope you have a blast. 😀

Great comprehensive vid. Thanks for doing this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Pole Position on the 7800 looks great.
Yeah, it does.
Battlezone supported?
I'm an old phart who remembers dropping many a quarter during lunch hours!
Loved that game!
Thank you, Jon. Enjoyed the reviews!!
You can run Battlezone, but the controls aren't really available to play it properly. 🥲
I have one of these. The games were fun. I had no idea you could add more. I did not read that in the instructions. I am gonna go look right now. Thank you for this video. I appreciate you.
Glad I could help!
Can you tell us if the vcs controller works on the gs pro

FANTASTIC VIDEO REVIEW! ❤️
10:17 omg I never owned a game boy but that song was in my head for decades! Omg this video cracked the case! I thought it was from an NES platformer!
Well, there goes my sleep time. .....
Great instructions here and the firmware upgrade video. Thank you for your work on these excellent videos.!
Good video, thank you.
I had the issue of the SD card not reading when I plugged it in. You have to format the SD card to exFAT- That's what worked for me. Thanks
I'll add that to my list of tips in the pinned comment. Thanks!
Thanks for the video! Tried all the different formats, nothing worked. Tried different size cards, no luck. The card was recognized the first time I tried, but will not be recognized after trying every option I could think of. Any ideas?
@@evergreenefc1888 Sure. Did you check the list of tips in the pinned comment already?
OK, figured it out. I needed to save the state, of one of the original games on the SD card and then load the games in the games folder.
Thank you Jon for the work you did here
My pleasure. 😀
Awesome! I like your suggestions on file organization. Beats my husband's old C64 "filing" system by a mile LOL! Looking forward to tracking down some old favorites to add for ours.
That is awesome!
Thanks for the tutorial. It seems like this console is running something like a pi zero or similar. Reminds me of the Super Retro-Cade that came out a few years ago.
No Tron :( SD Card support is great but really need a way to sideload Tron with paddle support.
There are alwaysa ways to improve.
I decided to purchase a gamestation pro after watching the SD super expansion video. Thanks
You're welcome. Have fun!
Thank you so much for this video! Hopefully Amazon emails us soon on if they’re going to honor those 7/31 preorders.
UPDATE: Using the ROM list provided for the 2600, I was able to get most ROMs working. Some homebrews/hacks did not have sound though.
I am trying to open the SD card on my Atari GSP but it goes straight to the normal start screen upon start-up. Do you have any advice for me to get this to work?
Thanks so much for this video Jon! Very informative.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this video. Great content!
@@GenXGrownUp Exactly.

@@GenXGrownUp do I need custom firmware to add games?
@@DarkPitTheFallenAngel I promise I would've mentioned it in the video if required. Later firmware versions extend functionality, but not required for anything you see here.
Thanks for the info. Im new to having these new emulator players and have no idea where to start exactly other than doing research on the subject which I started with TH-cam first and then was going to My Arcade forums if I can find official one.
I just ordered a GSP after watching your videos and other Atari fans and game creators were saying really good stuff about it.
PS: also I am keeping up on the firmware updates info, so I am for sure going to do all the updates to it before I do anything else.
You're very welcome. It's really as simple as moving some files around! Thanks for watching. 😀
Is there a source for Mario Brothers (arcade) and Galaga (arcade) that run on the GSP. The ones from the linked resource don't work for me.

I got mine last week. Upgraded latest firmware, so far I added the Atari 2600 games on the SD card and Nintendo is next.
Thanks for sharing your experience! 😀
