  • Today you are coming with me on an exploration of an abandoned $5.5 million dollar mega mansion. It’s so bizarre to see how many of these giant homes are left behind in America only to be destroyed by elements, people, and developers. But behind every abandoned home is a unique story of someone’s life.
In today’s episode we are taking a trip down south to a massive abandoned mansion that was last owned by an art and antique dealer, the 10,000 square foot mansion dates all the way back to 1920 being built in a Mediterranean style. But what’s very unique about this place is that behind the main house is a horse shoe shaped structure that last served as luxurious condominiums. the family that lived here bought the mansion in the 1990s and ran their business from home, but in 2005 the man passed away due to an illness and his wife was unable to keep up with the mortgage. The bank eventually took over the property and ultimately left it abandoned with everything still inside. So join me today and let’s see what’s left.

The Japanese tatami room is used for anything from dining to tea to meditation or sleeping. The grass mats on the floor are called tatami mats. That chair is really out of place, since traditionally there would be floor pillows to sit on and if used for dining there would be a very large square table that the family would sit on the floor and eat at the table. Smaller individual tables wiuld be used for tea. Rolled up mats would be in a corner for sleeping, and would be unrolled at night. Hope that helps!! Great house!!

Yes to , as a former landlord and knowing others, n renters stiff the landlord because they can stay for free for YEARS because of pro-tenancy laws (at least in CA) whilst landlords have to pay property taxes and other expenses. This is not a case where some elderly pensioner is living in a small home that he can’t afford to fix up but a HUGE mansion and they can move to a smaller place. People ALL have financial responsibilities and if they can’t afford it they SHOULD move out.

The doorframe 24:16 That design is called Greek Key. It's not an egyptian design, it is Greek ; as are the Greek column frescas on either side of the previous door.

I wonder if the people owned the home owned the Condos since it looks like it's on the same property. Maybe they just lost everything unfortunately or maybe decided to go back to China since the husband passed and to ship all that furniture would have cost a fortune so they left it behind and whatever was sold at auction went to the bank to cover what was owed. Really sad.

Rooms with Tatami mats are commonly recognized as Washitsu, which literally means Japanese-style room. Washitsu were designed by Samurai officials for Samurai warriors residences in the 14th century. The sliding doors are called Shoji. This washitsu does look like it was used for meditation because it appears to be an extension of maybe a small library or possibly a small bedroom.. It wouldn't have made sense to be used to entertain guests as a dining room or as a martial arts studio. But now days they are used for any purpose the owner wishes.
The screens are called changing or privacy screens so you guessed correctly. I once saw a 10 panel asian design privacy screen. It was magnificent and I kick myself for not buying it when I had the chance.

Whoever was restoring it, had a different direction in mind vs. maintaining the original character of the original home as noticed by the modern big box store fixtures (ugh) that were intended to replace the chandeliers, etc. Not all of it was original either. The 80s tilework was not great in the fountain room, nor the large picture windows in that space. I wonder if it was entirely added on in the 1980s-90s or at one time was an open courtyard? Would have loved to know how it was originally used back in its glory. Still love seeing these homes, as they are reminders of our past, present, and future. Thanks for filming!

That room earth the Asian style, kind of raised, reminds me of the Buddhist shrines where you'd go to meditate, and pay homage/worship/offer prayers to Buddah, with the burning delicious incense aromas, lovely decorations for protection, prosperity, peace, and million year happiness, with beautiful offering bowls filled with fruit and coins.
That's what it reminds me of and looks like to me.
I get the sense that the man who died in 2005 passed suddenly, and perhaps tragically.
His wife may not have been able to cope with the loss and fell deep into soul crushing grief.
Those condos in the back very well may have been residences for family.
I just get the sense there was a horrible circumstance that befell this couple and family. It's the kind of feeling that clenches your heart with sorrow.
    Sadness, so much sadness.

I kinda feel like this place is still being renovated right now. Well I hope it is! Such a beautiful home! But wayyyyy too much carpet.

The detail on the molding 8s Greek. It was part of the original home. The modern and Asian looks out of place in the house.

It’s definitely still being renovated. There might be a pause, but there’s no way they would leave all of those tools and just disregard all of that furniture. The bank still owns the house. Obviously, there’s a lot of money to be made here. If it were truly abandoned and left that place would be so vandalized, windows would be broken, tons of graffiti, potential homeless people living in there, kid partying and trashing it, so the fact that it was in fairly good condition tells me someone or some people must keep an eye on it. Also thieves (people) or groups would’ve come by there with trucks and unloaded all that furniture by now and sold it. It’s possible the nice gentleman on this channel reached out to somebody before they went there who knows but either way a cool place!

It’s shocking that this was built in the 1929s??! I see some of it in the architectural details but the 1990s renovation probably ruined a lot. Too bad you can snag the furniture or fixtures! I saw a $60k Murano Glass tube glass chandelier in one of the houses you explored. Vandals had broken some of the tubes-sadly. Thanks for sharing! Hope you keep exploring and learning (you should study interior design or take a 101 course so you can use the right terminology)

My husband and I love watching your videos. This one has us both completely baffled. The layout makes absolutely no sense whatsoever? Looks like it was definitely used as a business at some point but regardless of that, the original build is chaotic. I really want to know the history now. 🤔🤯

I loved the cabinet with the face on it. I like watching your videos while doing doctoral graduate work online-so it kinda keeps me company and going. No cursing or anything. Just moderate history and I can scroll the comments for more facts. Keep up the good work.
