      OMG you just solved the problem with my heat exchanger! It's a radiator-like box that heats fresh water from the coolant fluid running from my Espar heater to the fans providing hot air. It has a unique thread, metal, that matches Nothing, and has been packed with plumbers tape and goo forever... but naughtily drips a bit. So frustrating, until now, and you've provided the answer! Plastic fitting to the rescue!
      Coincidentally, when you started explaining the two styles of watermaker pumps, I thought "I used to think I could be like Dan, and do everything onboard myself, and now it's clear he's so far beyond my skill set & comprehension, I'm happy just to be impressed and inspired, and hire people to do the complicated stuff". Then you did this little thread number, and I thought, I can do that! It may take a few tries, and that's ok.
      You're soooooo inspiring, Dan! Love you both so much 😄😊

    Well I’ve built reverse osmosis plants for a living and I can tell you that I wouldn’t expect to run these systems without limits because your maintenance on your filters is going to be very expensive. The more you run them the more you got a flush clean replace to maintain. Figure out everything that can go wrong and have two or three back up parts because you’ll need them. The question is not whether it will breakdown the question is when. I advise be proactive and stay ahead of the game on your maintenance. Set up a system for testing water quality. Get the test kits and test at intervals. Its important to know the systems ultimate performace. Each system varies. Your good planning has put you in a good position for maintence. Saved yourself allot of headace by doing that. Very nice thoughtful installation. Good job.

      The disaster magnet boats (oN fIrE aNd SiNkInG... AgAin!!) and clickbait disaster tropes (WiLl CuStOmS lEt uS leEaVe ThEiR CoUnTrY?!) are certainly well represented on sailing channels. I'd often be at anchor for a week or two and the only reason I'd have to find a marina (and usually at least buy some diesel if not take a slip) was for water. Now I can just flip a switch and in a couple hours, my tanks are full. I even added an inline chlorination system to keep the tanks fresh and algae-free.

    • @geraldhenrickson7472
      @geraldhenrickson7472 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is clever yet when PVC first came on the market, many plumbers did such wizardry to get by. Normally you fashion the brass (cut grooves perpendicular to the threads) to create a makeshift tap. Then you thread it into the PVC at room temperature. In other countries (especially Baja Sur) I have seen this done quite bit. If you've no hardware store , no money...or both, you develop skills such as this.

    I don't know if plastic threads need to be hardened in some way after they are cut or maybe the formed plastic already has its hardening and maybe the heating of it again, loses any hardening. I didn't hear you say how much pressure each of those customized fittings has to take, but if they don't leak, you did a great job of improvising! I don't think I've ever taken the time to mention how much I like the uniqueness of your opening theme! I love the ship's horn, the whistle theme, the "Don't Buy A Couch" motto, and the floating compass rose / UMA logo! I have the same watermaker and just on a practical note the raw water inlet for an engine that you kept usually faces to the stern so that the engine doesn't get too much raw water as the boat moves forward. The recommendation for the watermaker is that the intake faces the bow so that when you are moving the intake pressure adds the the pump pressure and is much more efficient. Mine now works fine but I had all sorts of problems including a split in the factory fitted check valve and the wrong size components in the sealed packs and no factory calibrationn or testing. That said it is a wonderful piece of kit when it is working.

    I would suggest putting a t-valve in your fresh water flow to the tank so you can put drinking water into a container before it goes to the tank. Also, remember that the osmosis system strips everything out of the water ( Fluoride, minerals, etc. ). Look on line for suggestions for additives. We also added a small amount of Clorox to our tank water.

U r both amazingly capable and unbelievably organized to have the water maker compartment mapped out so precisely, so far in advance and have it all come together so well!!! Though my fingers work, I am left speechless!! I hope that "it will be continued" Thanks for a gr8 episode!!

    Dan,
    It was great ingenuity you exhibited to make your custom fitting from melting and forming plastic fittings. Every time an adapter is used there is a certain probability of leakage or failure which increases with each added fitting used to cob together a rig. If using dissimilar fittings there is also issues of material interaction (corrosion, seizing, etc … especially with metals in a marine environment).
    Your solution utilizing single adapter was elegant from a standpoint of engineering, simplicity, and reliability! If your not going to replace it with a commercial adapter, I’d make a spare and keep it with your watermaker spare parts. 👍😎

    It looked like you were using Teflon tape on plastic threaded connections. The best thing to use is Oatley Great White Pipe Joint compound. It is a thick white paste which will prevent or stop leaks, especially in plastic. A small can goes a long way and don't get any of it on your clothes because it will not wash out/off. It will work where tape will fail and no drips ever.

Our Captain is like MacGyver as well. We Use solar and diesel to charge the Batt's. Been Gunkholing along the east coast of SC last two weeks. Stay safe. Stay warm.

    When I saw you opening the box I was saying, “oh I hope it’s a Spectra.” And it was! Great choice. I had one o the earlier spectra’s when I was down in a the Seas of Cortez Mexico. It’s a desert! And really needed a watermaker. Loved it. It worked for several years until we sold the boat and it was still working. Very efficient. Also, there aren’t many watermaker that work in cold water. Good stuff!

    I'm very impressed with your way of making threading, simply ingenious, a big applause from me.
    And with regard to imperial thread, it is not only an American phenomenon,
    as soon as you work with pipes and fitting in Europe or in any case in Denmark, it is in 99% of cases imperial thread,
    you can easily have mm hoses in a quick connectors with imperial thread.
    Thanks for some lovely videos.

  • @Gilespargiter
    @Gilespargiter 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Completely feel for you with those threads. BTW. U.S. pipe threads are different from BSP (British Standard Pipe) threads, although similar concept for the way they lock. Just as U.S. gallons, eight 16oz pints (3.8litres) are different from Imperial gallons, eight 20fl.oz pints (4.56litres)!
    Looks well fitted. Enjoy your water.

    Hey guys , keep you eyes open for condensation damage , being in cold climates and uninsulated .
    Nice thinking in the way you got your packages delivered close to the boat , where a hand truck was available , then using your winch and boom to pick it up and set it on deck.
    Then you fabricate pieces that don't exist and rebuild something that you've never seen before and I'm guesing ... will work , first try .
    You're a smart confident person who can adapt his circumstances to make it work , just because you don't understand the meaning of can't.
    Bravo ! I admire you and your attitude ! Both of you are really nice people and I hope that you can beat of your up upcoming challenges .

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We actually did insulate our hull. We only insulated it above the waterline, so all the condensation from our breath could still accumulate in the bilge and get pumped out by the bilge pump. It's like a natural dehumidifier. It works so well, that we actually add humidity to our boat when we run the woodstove or it gets too dry inside.
