I sent this vid to a friend that is interested in sailing saying, "It is great because it illustrates many things about sailing short handed (and even single handed as she handles tacking alone while he is below), points of sail, tacking, reefing, going on deck when it's bumpy under sail, anchoring, anchor watches, and docking. One of the best vids I've seen and with some great filming to boot. It is one I could watch repeatedly and glean info from it each time."
    Again, nice job!

Sailing in a racing boat teaches cruising sailors the way to seek out lifts and avoid the knocks that abound in sailing similar situations and conditions, pointing up in the bullets and then racing off with it. Seems you had a lot of leeway in those tacks, you did well. great editing and sailing.

@@KrisSanders Their conscious decision to go electric was monumental. It shaped their sailing philosophy for the rest of their time outfitting the boat and becoming better sailors in the process. Utterly fascinating process that will be invaluable to thousands of aspiring cruisers the world over. Granted as they became more popular the quality of their gear has become increasingly cutting-edge (and expensive) but they still showed a path toward doing much of the expensive refitting work yourself if you have the knack to do that kind of thing (which you should if you want to be a true sailor).

Not taking anything away from Kika, but when the sailing is rough all hands need to be on-deck. Dan was right, some of those tacks looked like crap. Maybe you could have pulled off the same sail in 38-39 tacks.
That is also when you need some crew. You can only take so much of that type of exertion before you collapse. Someone has to keep the crew fed so they have the energy to work.
The cinematography in the landscape shots was amazing. Breath taking even! Thank you!

I was part of a sailboat rental company on the Great Lakes (US) and let me tell you, a mind-blowing number of people will show up with a decent sailing resume and boasts of their sailing prowess and then call for rescue because they set off on a broad reach and can't figure out how to sail upwind to come back. Being able to go upwind despite the weather being crappy shows you really can sail. You might not want to sail in that everyday, but its good that you can.

Wow, that was sailing! The wife and I had our first charter, just the 2 of us, this summer on Lake Michigan. We were cruising along in 10 knots with full sails, and then the winds jumped to 25 continuous. I learned about "rounding up" that day, and, that night, talking with some other sailors, learned about easing the main as the first step in that situation. Watching this brought all those memories back clear as a bell.

I was just thinking that this episode was a clear example of their motto, “In no hurry to go anywhere, ever.” Sure, other sailors would fire up the engine and motor in, but to what end?To get to the pizza place sooner? Who else can say that they once spent 7 hours making 42 tacks to go 13 nautical miles on the longest navigable fjord in Norway? With these two, the adventure is the journey...and the destination.

    • @loveforsberg530
      @loveforsberg530 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I did a miniature version of that once. It was in a small day sailer in light wind in a sound with lots of motorboats and the occasional cruise ship. We spent half an hour making 10m tacks (as to not get into the middle where cruise ships and other big boats go), and got nowhere, because of bow waves from other boats. Only when the traffic died down could we break free from the sound onto more open waters and get home. We didn't have a motor. The only alternative was to drag the boat along the shore with a long line, but the shoreline is mostly cliffs and jags in and out. Fun times.

Excellent short tacking. The art is all in the timing - casting off the sheet without snagging and getting the jib pretty much sheeted home on the other side before the weight of the wind gets on it. It’s obvious watching you that you are well practised.
Takes me back to many years exploring the rivers, estuaries and lochs of England, Wales and Scotland and later, here in New Zealand. Would have loved to have had self-tailing winches in those days. Happy days.

Kika is EPIC on the single-handed section!! And the absolute concentration with the forward and reverse on the motor coming into the dock!!!
    Kika! You are my HERO!!!
Dan!!! I kinda laughed a bit when you were at the helm on the easy downwind section but yeah, a LOT of hard sheet pulling prior to that!
I haven't done much sailing. A small bit on a 26 foot day sailor and then I made a sailing rig for my canoe... and managed to get it to go UP WIND! I was so happy when that actually worked for me! Tacking like you did but up a "fiord" lake!

Beautiful and fun to watch! Thank you. Great way to get in your exercise. The saloon reno is impressive. Kudos! I eat my heart out watching the adventures of so many world sailors on youtube. The main thing holding me back is that I have no talent at repairs and maintenance. I know a lot of folks who have a world of skill and I don't understand why they don't take a year or two to travel aboard. What a way to see the world. Been to the Caribbean and Bermuda... always just days away from professional support.

Typical cruisers spend more time anchored or docked or at shore than actually under way. For me anytime I get to sail and handle lines and “do stuff” is exciting. Even if it’s challenging. Uma may not be typical cruisers but you see they still stop and relax often. Never in a hurry to go anywhere is the best mantra to live by.

I used to work on a cruise ship (royal Caribbean jewel of the seas), and we did a cruise to Flåm at the summer solstice of 2008 - up the same fjord you guys are on. I remember it was the most absurdly beautiful place. The mountaintops still had snow and there were epic waterfalls and little towns all along the fjord. I really wanted to explore them, but had to be satisfied with just watching them go by from my treatment room window in the spa. I’m eagerly awaiting your videos. Hope to see some more of all those little towns. Thank you!
