Jason, thank you a million times. You made my day. I've been trying to get this app started for months and had a terrible time. Tried a lot and it didn't work. Your hint, to forget about wifi and just use Bluetooth was helpful. A corrupted wifi-connection was the problem. With the help of your video, I started everything from scratch and now it works. Great explanation. So guys, if you are stuck like me - forget about all this Wifi-Cloud-Stuff. ;-) BTW: Jason, you are a great teacher.

Yeah, for remote control shooting this app is really good in my opinion and it does offer a decent amount of power as well... I use it all the time for remote shooting and transferring photos, usually food pics to restaurant owners for social sharing when out eating ;) Thanks for the comments and all the best, Jay
You mention GPS in the title --but no word of it. That was the reason I had clicked .
Sorry, you can use this app to add the gps info to the photos you are transferring if you want. It's an option in the app in the set-up menu you just have to enable Location Information Linkage...

Fantastic tutorial. I was specifically interested in GPS, which I don't think you mentioned. However, mousing around with your instructions for what the icons meant helped me set up GPS. I think the GPS feature might be worth another video all on its own, as I did some testing and there are some quirks. The main two quirks are:
1. The Creator app has to be running for this to work. There is no background function to handle GPS tagging even after the Creator app is set up with your phone.
2. The Creator app has to be "connected" to your camera to work. While this might seem obvious, there are two caveats that come immediately to mind: (1) I have more than one camera, but the creator app works with only one of them at a time. Therefore, there is no way to have two cameras around your neck and get GPS data to both unless you also have two phones, and (2) The creator app remains "connected" to the camera even when the phone is sleeping or the app is not frontmost in the application stack, BUT the Creator app does not automatically reconnect to the camera if the phone is switched OFF and then ON. This is important, as it is common for me to turn off my phone for long plane flights. My common practice for trips would be to setup the Creator app up before leaving for the trip, tested it to ensure the GPS feature is working and then trust it is working during the trip. However, if I restart my phone for any reason (like a long plane flight), I now know I have to reconnect the Creator app to the camera on arrival for GPS to work. Luckily, once "connected" to the phone, I can turn my camera on and off without issue and I can even change the battery without issue. The only time I need to reconnect to the Creator app is if I restart the app or restart the phone.
As I said at the top, there are enough details here to warrant another video. All the best.

I have tried the experimental GeotagAlpha, which is incredibly nice to use but does seem to mess with the clock in certain α camera models.
Great review. As someone who uses imaging edge to tether while shooting interiors, I have just one concern about what I've seen here. It looks like Sony has done away with the arrows next to the exposure values, making it require another click every time I want to modify, say shutter speed. So, let's say you're shooting a flash/ambient composite and want to bracket your ambient exposures. With Imaging Edge set up in 3rd-stop increments you could poke the arrow next to the shutter speed value three times to move a stop and then fire your frame. It appears with this new app you must first select shutter speed, and then poke the arrow three times because there's no way to modify it without first opening it to that next level. I know this may seem like a dumb thing to get hung up on, but I shoot ~350 properties per year and something like this can really start to matter within that workflow.
Nice tutorial, I have been holding off bc it bricks Monitor + apparently, maybe they fixed that, but how is the stability? Does it disconnect frequently like the old app did? And does the tracking touch work in video mode as well? I keep editing as your video goes on, Can you choose not to have them transferring to the phone? You answered several at the end, Thanks

Hope for an update soon for a7SIII after FX3/FX30 today. Seems like a wonderful tool to shoot myself also shift the focus to the product when alone in the studio.
FX3 and FX30 update came out yesterday, but nothing for the A7S3....
@@Jason_Hermann Yeah I doubt they'll skip a7sIII. Something should come within this month or later. But sadly animal/bird eye detect in video is the most crucial thing to me.
Awesome that you'll able to update to 2.0. Mind keeps saying "there is no media inserted in slot 1, there is no update file in the media or the file is damaged" Do you have any idea how to fix this pls. Thanks!
I shoot with two cameras simultaneously. I wish that as an upgrade to the old camera, that Sony would’ve added multi camera support. 😢

Thank you for this video. I finally got mine to work on my iPad only will not work on my iPhone for whatever reason. I also use the RED CONTROL app which is amazing works perfectly on both my iPhone and iPad. Very disappointed in the antiquated interface on this Sony app if anyone has ever used the RED CONTROL app, you know what I’m talking about, I feel like I’m using windows 98 with this Sony app. But great video, and very good explanation on how to connect.🤙🏻
Yeah, the RED App is the real deal and how I wish Sony's app was.... Sony makes a commercial app that is works like the RED, but it's not for the public unfortunately and is really made for commercial applications. I wish it would trickle down though...

I think in the old imaging edge app there’s a function to automatically transfer the photo directly to the phone after taking a picture on the camera. is that feature still around in this new app?

Very useful many thanks for making the video. I’m using android phone. It was saying it wouldn’t connect when I first tried although was clearly seeing the camera as it was telling me how many shots were left and the battery status. I left it for a month as didn’t have time to play with the settings. Today it works! Abbé a software update? Some odd things. The shutter button does not make a noise on the phone when I tap it, phone volume is on. Have found I tap to focus and his does with touch focus or touch tracking but it doesn’t take a picture. To get the shutter to fire I have to swipe the button left and back. This is odd but ok. But if you have the camera in high burst mode and just swipe left if just keep taking the pictures! If the camera goes not sleep mode and turns off the screen/monitor the app doesn’t seem to wake it up. Not good if you want this for wild life as when it’s on it’s eating up battery. Fairly obviously if you have a lens with clickable apartment ring it won’t change the aperture until you change it in camera to allow the camera to change the aperture.

Videos save on the camera, because the files are so large it does not rely on recording to the smart device... photos can be recorded to the smart device though directly...
10:37 If shooting In Raw only, will it make the images tiny like if Image edge? I shoot in Raw + JPG to avoid this, I used Original, this allowed me to import the pics in original size so I could upload it on Instagram zoomed in, and not look bad. I have 85mm lens so zooming in on a tiny image is pointless, but if it's big I can zoom in without loss of quality.
How exactly do you use the gps feature for the a7IV? I've been trying to figure it out with no success
I found that most didn't know that if you view your photos on camera while in the imaging edge app it would disconnect. Creators app doesn't disconnect when viewing photos on camera but its connection isn't as reliable at the moment as the imaging edge is. I can shoot all over the gym even outside and still stay connected in the imaging edge app. I haven't been able to do that yet in the creators app.
Very informative video thank you Jason. I have a Sony a6700. I set the live connection with 5Ghz Wifi for shooting, aim is to take pictures of myself 20 to 25m away using a zoom lens. However when I go past something like 10m, the connection is lost. Before being lost it becomes choppy and sluggish. Can you please help out with your views?
Yeah, you can't go that far and remote control the camera. The distance for that function is limited by the bluetooth as far as how I understand it. I know it uses both wi-fi and bluetooth, but it still seams to need the bluetooth. I think it uses the wi-fi to transfer the files fast, but BT for the key communication. It's hard to say for sure, but that is what I think is going on.

how do you disable this feature of the app automatically saving images into my camera roll? Its driving me insane!
Is there any way to see the view of the camera on a tablet in full view? In my tablets, Android or iPad, the screen only appears on a portion of the iPad or tablet display. It does not show in full view. I would like the image of the camera to be displayed in full view.

Thanks for ths video! I saw something labeled location in the settings on your screen... have you done any testing with this? One of the main reasons I use Imagine Edge is to get the location I take pictures into the data; it's always wonky, as has been typical of Sony software in my experiences, but it's been much better lately, and I'd rather wait until forced to update if this is an issue.
I did not test the gps aspect of this app, but it does offer that feature. I can't see why it would not work, but I hear ya and they can be a bit wonky for sure at times...
Quick questions, yesterday I was using the app and for some reason the pictures raw and jpeg were going to my iPhone and not may camera... could not figure out how to stop it and did not realize it until I had already shot many many pictures? How can we use the app and keep the pictures going only to the camera not the phone?

I’ve been trying to copy videos to my IPhone from this app but it says there isn’t enough storage yet I have plenty in my IPhone what could be the problem here? The video might be a 2-5 mins long yet I get the same message (not enough storage) are there other alternatives to get my videos in my PC or IPhone from Sony zv1f?

Gi have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and a7cm2. I have no problems connecting, but I have problems viewing raw files transferred over from my Sony in the iOS photos app. Works on jpg like this content creator does but dot raw.
Wonder how far away this will operate decently from? I was considering adding an FX30 to my fleet for weddings and use it on a side angle tripod during the ceremony and it’d be amazing to be able to pull out my phone and recheck the focus with it from a distance.
About 20 feet appears the max distance....

That is a good question that I don't have the answer to, but I think it will be one or the other since they both require bluetooth for connecting and hand shacking...

what would be clutch is auto LR or LUT preset. when you take a picture while connected the phone immediately keeps the picture, so its already local. now auto apply lut. so that way i can share instantly would be amazing.
You can set up the camera creative styles and use that as a "lut" sort of thing for photos if you want to bake that in to the photos for quick sharing...
Great video! I updated my A7Rv s/w to v2, and am playing around with the Creators App. Can you use this app to do interval shooting, with exposures longer than 30 seconds? I want to shoot star trails, but I'm not sure if I can do this through the app, or if I need an external intervalometer.
No you can't do interval shooting with exposures longer than 30seconds to my knowledge... That gets into bulb mode territory.

Can you shoot tethered with a cable for faster transfer?
Yes, with the Sony Imaging Edge Desktop software you can do that.
I was hoping to see if one could set the time beyond 30 seconds in the Bulb mode. Apparently, that feature is not available in this app. I wish Sony had that as a built-in feature.
Hi, anyone know how to stop the android phone from scanning for the camera when not in use?
Hi Jason, i did the exact same procedure on my a7iv but when i come to remote control or image download i always get an error message. This is curious because the camera is connected to the app. Did you had some similar issues?
If yes, what is the workaround?

I would trying quitting the app completely and then trying again. The bluetooth handshake went well? Is your phone connected to another wi-fi network? Sometimes depending on the phone it wont switch wi-fi networks so you might need to disconnect from home network for example. Also try rebooting the camera also...
Thanks for a very interesting video. I have a problem. All my videos shot in XAVC S 4K will not be marked for import to my iPhone, even if it says XAVC S 4K is supported. Do you have any explanation or experience with this issue?

I have the solution... basically if you record files over 100mbs you won't be able to download the files from the camera to the app>smartphone. Try to use H265 4k no more than 100mbs. Let's hope they update this shameful limitation.
I’ve been looking everywhere trying to figure this out. So I cannot transfer videos shot in 4:2:2 10 bit to my iPhone but in 4:2:0 8 bit I am able to though! ( both in xavcs4k ) , but I hope they can fix this though so I can see 10 bit .
what can I do if it can't find the camera when "checking camera status"... in the app I see the camera but then I can't go in to download the photos.

Not that I know of, but you can change the brightness on the iPhone very easily to combat this...
Is there any way to connect this app via Usb C or any other cable. The wifi and bluethooth seems to drain lot of battery..

I’ve been using the creators app with my zv1f for about a month to cross over my videos to my phone and i always delete them from the app afterwards
For some reason now it’s not been letting me transfer anymore because once it has been processing for a while instead of being complete it will say “no space”

Is it the app? Is it my memory card? I format my memory card also after every transfer so i don’t think that’s the issue

It's kinda confusing, because my app says I have 114 photos on my iPhone, but I have way more photos than that in my photo app on the iphone (2,500+) . So the 114 I can see in the app are only the images I transfered to the iPhone from the camera. I don't see any duplicates, so I think your phone storage might just be full?

Hi Jason and thanks for the tutorial. Has Sony fixed the horrible self timer issue in the app (and/or V2 update for A7IV)? Where you have to be holding your phone in every friggin photo to simply be in focus?! Mind boggling that the focus is set when you start the countdown rather than being continuous during and actually (after the 3/5/10 seconds) use Sony's excellent focus system to FOCUS before the actual shot (not when you start the timer!? One of the most annoying things (of many) about the Sony cameras, at least for those that need to use the self timer. - Except if you set the aperture for f10 or smth...
You pretty much still need to hold the phone to hit the shutter button, but once the timer starts the focus is locked down so you can hide phone/ stay still... Also, you could record video if you want and that will track you the entire time and then grab a screen cap of the shot if needed...
@@Jason_Hermann Thank you for that. If I had an A1 (not an A7IV) that shoots 8K, that could be an option but grabbing screen shots from a 4K timeline is far from ideal, if you need any details in the image. Simce the 4K is a little bit sharper on the A7IV than my FX3, it would be a little less terrible, but still useless compared to a 33MP image that I SHOULD be able to get from the A7IV! It's bizarre that @Sony don't fix this, it's already a very old problem, one that most other camera manufacturers don't have.

Jason, I've used your great tutorial to set up the connection between my A7iv and the iPhone's "Creators" app a couple of times now, trying to resolve an ongoing problem, or more likely, to close a knowledge gap.
Do you have short explainer on connecting the iphone and camera for image transfer long AFTER setup, after weeks of shooting and transferring, and sometimes NOT transferring, photos?
The steps and number of screens to get the two devices to actually begin the transfer of an image, or selected image, seems to change from use to use. Sometimes I just give up and try again later, or just do it the old school way when I get back to home base and my laptop.
Please, what are the exact steps and settings needed to simply transfer a photo to the phone using the Creators app when I'm out in public and just want to get the job done with as few button presses and app juggling as possible?
I guess I need a mental pre-flight checklist, because it seems the app always wants to know different things, or isn't happy with something, or seems to want me to register the camera again, or is otherwise unhelpful in what the next step should be. (Image Edge was pretty straightforward in this regard. "Operate phone to connect to WiFi" or something like that, and boom, transfer happened. Usually.)
Normally I'm quite successful at figuring out workflow in apps, but this app can sometimes be a bit like spinning a roulette wheel.
Picture me standing there with my camera on, viewing a sweet photo I'd like to use on the 'gram right away. I pull out my iPhone, and... and...
Please explain it to me like I'm a particularly dull student, and many thanks if you do!
So after posting this question, I sat down to really grind through the process from scratch a few times in a row, and here is what seems to be the most successful method for "rapidly" sending images to my iPhone using the Creators' app...
Initial conditions:
iPhone settings at start: WiFi and Bluetooth OFF (as if I was just out shooting in some remote location)
Camera: previously properly paired and recognized by the Sony Creators' app
Oh! A lovely photo of the crescent Moon an Venus! Let's put it on the iPhone!
In camera:
1) In camera, select image(s) to send.
2) In camera, select OK for the question "When starting this function, other netwrok functions will be finished."
3) In camera, "Execute?", sure, press Enter
4) In camera, the "Connecting..." screen pops up, waiting... (If the "Connect Smartphone" thing appears, let it ride while you go to your iPhone and Step 5...)
...now, on the iPhone, rapidly do the following. (Wait too long to connect everything, and Issues Occur.)
In iPhone:
5) In iPhone, SETTINGS, turn on Bluetooth FIRST and choose your camera as the connection.
(If it appeared in Step 4 above, the "Connect Smartphone" screen should go away)
6) In Phone, SETTINGS, turn on WiFI and choose your Sony camera.
Open the Creator's app:
7) Open the Creators' app, (Home screen appears)
8) At the bottom of the Home screen, select the Camera icon to go to the Cameras screen.
7) From that screen, select the "View and Import" button. (If you've dawdled too long after Step 3, above, ISSUES OCCUR)
9) Select the large "View and Import" button. Good things should start happening.
Watch to see if the iPhone and app will actually connect to the camera and begin importing the photos to the iPhone.
Your mileage may vary. I've gotten to the timeout step after Step 4 but before Step 5 a few times while typing these notes and had to start from Step 1 after zeroing the board, as it were, and turning every thing off, Bluetooth, WiFi, even the camera, so that I kept on track with the workflow.
Can someone tell me if there is a better process for this? I think it was the "Bluetooth AND WiFi must be on, in that order, for best results" thing that bit me a few times before. The instructions for the Creators' app are... less than helpful, at times.

Hello Patrick, I have not used the App in a while and to your point, yes it is not working very good these days I just tried it myself. What I just found that worked for me consistently was launching the app first with bluetooth on and wi-fi on, but not connected to the camera... With the camera set-up as in the tutorial, the bluetooth on the camera should be ON by default and the hand shaking process should already be done, allowing the iPhone in my case to connect to the camera when nearby and on. With that being said, I have the camera on and then I launch the App fresh, meaning it was not open when I started. (My iPhone IS connected to home network when I start for reference) The App should automatically connect via bluetooth and you will see that on the opening screen as it opens.... Then as you did go to the camera tab on the bottom, and select View & Import... At that point the App asks to join the wi-fi of the camera and it connects for me consistently if I use this method and the photos transfer as expected using the app to do the work (view and import) not the camera. However, when you are done importing, and you go back the app automatically disconnects it tells you, but the bluetooth and wifi are still connected... If I try to reconnect at this point it always fails with some wi-fi error... So, you must close the app and reopen it and then it connects every time. Turning the camera on and off as apposed to closing the app also works, but closing and reopening the app is way faster I find. So it appears the wifi connection is getting stuck for some reason, and this forcing the App to disconnect and reconnect the Wi-Fi seams to fix it. I also tried leaving the app open and disconnecting the wifi in the iPhone settings, and allowing it to reconnect to my home network. When I tried to reconnect to the camera it worked and asked me to join the cameras wifi again and boom I was in. I tried this about 10X and I can consistently connect every time if I reset the wi-fi connection either by turning the camera on and off, closing and reopening the app, or disconnecting the wifi and allowing the app to reconnect it to the camera. I really hope this helps you out and hopefully Sony will cone out with another update to fix these connection issues... All the best, Jay

Once I have a straightforward method that works in the field, I think I will commit it to aNote on the iPhone and use that as my pre-flight checklist! I love my camera, and I love my iPhone, but the Sony app seems to be indiffernt to my feelings! : )

Thank you Jasia and Yes, if the smart device's internal storage is full than you won't be able to transfer files. Video files are huge compared to photos

Imaging edge worked great with my a7riii and my a7iv this new creator app doesn’t work on my a7iv after the 2.00 update . Restarted my phone unpaired and repaired the phone and camera can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong
I'm sorry that sucks! have you tried going into the imaging edge app and removing the camera from there?
Try updating to the new 2.01 firmware. In my case it worked.

More capable than IEM. However, my understanding is that after you do the firmware update (to be able to run Creators App) there’s no going back to IEM. Correct? I wonder if future firmware updates will be cumulative, such that there’s no going back to IEM from here on out. Correct?
Yes Paul that appears to be the case as far as going back to IEM. This app seams better so far, so I don't think that is to big of a deal.... I also waited a few weeks before updating the A74 firmware to V2.0 as well just to be cautious... I would also conclude that all the new Sony cameras will be using this Creators' App instead of IEM which is being phased out I think...
I've constantly had an issue where it auto disconnects within a few seconds almost every time. Is there a way to fix this?
Sometimes that happens to be the first time, but if I reconnect it then seams to hold the connection after that unless the iPhone goes to sleep or the camera goes to sleep for example.

The moment where it says "Device Name Iphone - OK" I give OK and and I`m back to the menu`s settings and the Iphone is stuck in a windows where it says Select An accessory. And 10 min nothing...

Hey there, sorry I didn't cover that in more detail... You need to go tot he SETUP area and select "Location Information Linkage"
By enabling this option, the location information of your smartphone can be recorded for the images taken on your camera. Additionally, if you enable [Auto Time Correction] and [Auto Area Adjustment], the time and area settings of your smartphone are automatically reflected in your camera.

Its such a pain. I can login to the web with my Sony ID but when I do it on the creatror app its says incorrect login. If I say new it says already exists.
Yeah that is frustrating for sure.... I would try a different email to create new account for creators app if that is the case.
I am Confuse, everyone leave a bad review about this app, how is working so smooth for you?
I honestly do not know. It occasionally disconnects on me, but other that that it mostly works great. I think depending on the smart device, the app struggles when you are connected to another wi-fi network or bluetooth device when trying to establish connection to camera, and that messes a lot of people up. Also, I have had better luck with my iPhone than with my Samsung phone overall, but both do work.

My Sony A7IV and Sony A7CMII won't connect to my iPhone 14 ProMax through the Creators App. Per Sony Technical Support, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is not a compatible device with my cameras. This again per Sony Technical Support!

I shoot in 10 bit on a A7Cii. It won’t let me transfer these Any fix ?
I don't think you can transfer the 10-bit video via the app, so you would need a SD card reader attachment for your device, or a usb cable w/ computer and camera.

The 10-bit 4k files don't seam to transfer over wifi or bluetooth, or depending on your device itself. For the record I never transfer video that way, I always use a card reader if going to an ipad or something and same for my Mac computer.

@@ericlow6694 Make sure you exit out of the app and close it down and then try again. You need to have bluetooth and wifi connections available on the iPhone for the camera to connect.
@@Jason_Hermann Found the probelm. Remove the Bluetooth pairing from both the camera and phone settings. And that means the Iphone settings itself. Settings > Bluetooth find the camera and set forget the camera.

It shows connected on camera. But while checking camera status, it will show cannot establish connection with camera.
Also, please help on this one. In my a6700 i set interval shooting so that i can take zoomed stills of myself over a bridge. But the camera wont focus. Pictures are blurred, not like one taken with someone operating the shutter button. Every option to focus requires the shutter button to be half pressed but I am not on the camera. What should I do? If I set AFC, the interval shooting cant be selected. Please help me bro.
Set the camera to focus on something where you wnt to stand, then switch the camera manual focus and you will good to go 👍
