Ok people. Don’t get jealous. I’m 63 and as a 20 year old Journey fan I was at this concert in Houston Texas and it was absolutely incredible! Steve Perry mentions that we were being recorded and the crowd was DEAFENING! One of the best performances I’ve ever witnessed ❤❤❤❤❤
This is the best live performance I have ever seen. Steve’s voice is a treasure, no one compares in my book. Great reaction, thanks for making my day. ❤✌
The piano solo is not on the studio version. Steve Perry often said that this song was the hardest to sing live. The piano solo gave him a chance to rest his voice!
Neal Schon said when Steve Perry came into the studio to lay vocal tracks down he never remembered Steve every needing more than one take. They called Steve Perry... Mr. one and done in the studios.
I only recently discovered that entire concert was on TH-cam and watched it. Closest I'll ever get to seeing Journey w/Steve Perry live like my Mom & brother did back then. The whole concert is fantastic.
Such an epic performance by the entire band. Remember that this song was in the line up at the Escape tour. By the time Steve sang this song he had been on stage for a good while. To hit the notes he did makes his performance even more iconic.
My drummer brother found himself in an elevator with Steve (I think he had been stalking Steve) and told me that they talked music for quite a while. Steve did not rush him along or talk like he was a huge star. Very down to earth and friendly. From the rare interviews I've seen of him, that's just the way he is 🎶🎵💚
Love that that you said Steve Perry was putting on a clinic! The whole band was MASTERFUL! This is how it’s done,! May I suggest you view Winds of March from Infinity? BRILLIANT song
So Blessed to have seen Steve Perry with Journey like 5 times or more... I've seen them since with the other guy.. good .. but never Steve Perry level. Journey in 1983 was my very first concert outside my State Fair.. it was amazing. Escape tour.. the best. Still get chills 40 yrs later.
I was at this concert in Houston, TX. Jonathan Kayne did a long solo on keys so Steve could condition his voice and get ready for this amazing tune. This was an amazing time in music. The out tro for the same reason.
Saw them on the Escape Tour in ‘81, just the week before at the Mobile Municipal Auditorium in Mobile, AL…Halloween night. This video shows exactly how they sounded. The song is about growing up in a dysfunctional family with an alcoholic father.
Steve Perry, the voice, nobody sings and performs like him. He had the voice, the stage presence and charisma, plus his interactions with the audience. And he always moves in time to the music. Journey without him is no longer the same, what a shame. The band at that time was so great and perfect live. Which can be heard and seen particularly well on this song. There are only five of them on stage, but it sounds like a great concert. Steve's voice together with these perfect musicians is simply awesome. Ross on bass was always underrated for me, as was Steve Smith on drums, both simply superb. See more of this concert, it was so good.
Steve Perry hjs son of portuguese mother and portuguese father, that immigrated to USA, from the portuguese island of Azores. As a portuguese, I love that fact. Big kiss from Lisbon, Portugal. Ana
Escape" Tour lineup "Line of Fire" "Lights" "Stay Awhile" "Open Arms" "Mother, Father" "Jonathan Cain Piano Solo" "Who's Crying Now" "Where Were You" "Steve Smith drum solo" "Dead or Alive" "Don't Stop Believin'" "Stone in Love" "Keep on Runnin'" "Neal Schon Guitar Solo" "Wheel in the Sky" "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" "Any Way You Want It"
We all know what Steve would say to those %#¤!? autotune and pitch control software inventors...What ever for??? While i'm sometimes pissed of getting old, i'm so glad that i lived my youth and grew up with bands like Journey. That music in late 70's and early 80's when i started to play guitar, that was so precious. And it still is. Steve's voice and this concert. Glorious!! 😎TTKing
This was written by Perry, Cain and Neal Shon and arranged by Shon's father the late Matthew Schon, a Jazz musician. All four are credited as composers.
written by Jonathan Cain, Neil Schon, Steve Perry and Matt Schon (Neil's father); Perry has said in interviews that this is the most difficult song to perform live
Listening to the studio version and this live version many times for me the live version is best ❤❤❤❤ If you haven't checked out Wheel in the Sky live in Osaka you should. I love that version ❤❤❤
Listening to them now.. I know I didn't appreciate the greatness they had.. Jonathan on the keyboards, Neal lead guitar, Ross bass, Steve Smith ... I mean ... come on.. they were amazing.. and then had Steve Perry THE VOICE.. I wish at 16 I had known the greatness I was seeing.. Hind sight.. 20/20
This has always been one of my favorite songs from them! I did a cover of this in the early days of my TH-cam channel. This song has always touched me because I grew up in a broken home situation. I've always loved Steve's vocals in this song. Actually, I think this whole album is solid! This was the last album that Steve's voice was at its strongest. You can definitely hear a big difference in the strength of his voice on Frontiers.
I know the general consensus is that Steve Perry has a voice like no other, one of the best. And I’m on board with that. The fact that Steve considered this the hardest song to sing says a ton about it. And yeah, his unbelievable high notes at the end… Good Lord. That’s why a writer once described his singing as “skyscraper notes”.
This was my first concert, I was 12 years old and remember it to this day. Last time I saw them live was about 13 years ago with Arnel. Was also my first time seeing Cheap Trick and Heart
The piano outro is not on the studio version. I'm sure it was added here to introduce the audience to their new keyboards player Jonathan Cain. If you want to see Jonathan Cain go crazy on the keyboards, he and Neal go nuts on a 2000 version of La Raza Del Sol. It was with Steve Augeri instead of Steve Perry, but it not only showcases those two, but also Deen Castronovo going crazy on the drums. Here it is (the tune actually starts around the 1:08 mark): th-cam.com/video/nesrF926fBw/w-d-xo.html
Let's Gooo! Steve Perry the Voice. Loving touching squeezing from this show. Great reaction and Peace out Steven ☮️ ✌️ 🙏 BTW I do believe this was written because Steve's parents were divorcing. Which a lot of us experience through the 80's.
@lilamuzik3385 lol! If you watch the Frontiers tour video you can even see the crate with "whale" on it being loaded. I'm just wondering if they had a piano tuner on the crew!
If u luv the piano u should check out Bruce Hornsby and the range "the way it is" Or "Mandolin Rain" Bruce is a masterful piano player.it's hypnotic to watch him play.❤❤❤
If you haven't heard Journey drummer Deen Castronovo cover this, you are in for a real treat! While he's no Steve Perry (no one is!), it will definitely amaze you - guaranteed! I saw a commenter a while back on Deen's performance who said "First God created Steve. Then He created Deen, just in case." 🙂
Neal, Neal’s dad, Steve, and Jonathan I believe they were all writing this. Jonathan said Steve did this song in one take for the record recording. Ross doesn’t get any props for his awesome bass.
@@jamesdwyer7379 Everyone comments that and I do appreciate it! However, we are an audio production company so I am listening through 2 pairs of studio grade monitors depending on how much bass response I want. Most if not all albums, are mixed at some point using studio monitors to cover the entire frequency spectrum. Most headphones (unless you spend hundreds as well) are not as good as people think. Have a great day! 😆

This may be the best vocal performance of all time!! Steve Perry is a LEGEND!!
Steve said this was his hardest song to sing. Jon's solo was to give him some time to recover.
That’s so EPIC!! Thanks for sharing! 🔥
I am SO jealous!!! That’s a memory worth savoring ❤
In my opinion this is Steve Perry’s greatest vocal work ever on this song
Favorite Journey performance of all time. That whole concert was fire.
Steve perry the Best male voice ever no one cant touch Steve perry voice Steve perry the GOAT
no band any better in the 80s.....steve perry, what a voice.... thanks.....
When you love, a woman is an absolute must
I hear rock music since 6 years of age and this is the best rock ballad performed live. Absolutely amazing!
Thank you for reaction sir. Amazing live track. This really shows just pure talent.
"Wheel in the Sky" (live Osaka Japan 1980). Most EPIC solo intro by Steve Perry! Interaction with the concert goers is very entertaining!
The piano solo was to let Steve rest his voice it's live only
The whole band has outstanding talent.Steve Perry has the best vocals in rock., He is the whole package in my opinion.
You are 💯 right!! Thanks for hanging out for a bit! 😁
Neal Schon said when Steve Perry came into the studio to lay vocal tracks down he never remembered Steve every needing more than one take. They called Steve Perry... Mr. one and done in the studios.
Jon Caine speaks with awe that Steve did the studio version of this song in one take.
I only recently discovered that entire concert was on TH-cam and watched it. Closest I'll ever get to seeing Journey w/Steve Perry live like my Mom & brother did back then. The whole concert is fantastic.
His voice is an Instrument! They sound like an Orchestra
I'm so glad I got to see them with Steve Perry on the "Raised on Radio" tour before he left.
Did you hear the song he just put out singing with his father? SO GOOD!!
I haven’t! Thanks for the info! 😁
Such an epic performance by the entire band. Remember that this song was in the line up at the Escape tour. By the time Steve sang this song he had been on stage for a good while. To hit the notes he did makes his performance even more iconic.
LET'S GO is right! A very under rated song and one of my faves.
He actually recorded this song in the studio in 1 take. Are you kidding me lol. Awesome performance

Steve has said this was the hardest song, physically, for him to sing. In concert they add the piano solo at the end to allow Steve time to recover.
Thank you! I so wish I had seen Steve in his heyday! I'd go see him now, but man! I missed out back then. I had small children - no time for concerts.
I was at this concert in Houston, TX. Jonathan Kayne did a long solo on keys so Steve could condition his voice and get ready for this amazing tune. This was an amazing time in music. The out tro for the same reason.

Did you know that they recorded this track in one take? No, do overs. Steve, Jon, and Neal wrote this beautiful piece of music. ❤❤❤❤
Saw them several times in the late 70’s and early 80’s. They were always good…
BTW Steve is a drummer. Steve did the studio version of this in a single take! He has he cleanest most impeccable vibrato I've ever heard.
Steve Perry, the voice, nobody sings and performs like him. He had the voice, the stage presence and charisma, plus his interactions with the audience. And he always moves in time to the music. Best vocals ever! Steve said in an interview his parents divorce was very hard even as an adult. I can relate
Steve Perry hjs son of portuguese mother and portuguese father, that immigrated to USA, from the portuguese island of Azores. As a portuguese, I love that fact. Big kiss from Lisbon, Portugal. Ana

There's a live version after Steve left that the drummer Dean Castronovo sings that is crazy good. His drumming is good on it too.
Oops. Misspelled Deen. The live in Vegas is my favorite version.
Yes. What you just witnessed is REAL.......
Steve sure gave it everything…it must have been hard on his voice!
Shewee! I guarantee it!
I love their live performances of Patiently and Still they ride.
This was written by Perry, Cain and Neal Shon and arranged by Shon's father the late Matthew Schon, a Jazz musician. All four are credited as composers.
Steve, Steve, Steve.you are so great........and I keep forgettin how damn good the band is !
Do journey
Still they ride live in Tokyo 1983 😊

Yes, he puts his whole body into it. According to Cain, he did the studio version in one take.

Truly unbelievable!! Such a legend!! 🔥
Being a drummer, you should check out a post Steve version with Dean on vocals. Wow
Steve is the GOAT!
This was my first concert, I was 12 years old and remember it to this day. Last time I saw them live was about 13 years ago with Arnel. Was also my first time seeing Cheap Trick and Heart

My favorite Journey song. Thanks, brother!
Thanks for watching! 😁
That baby grand traveled to every concert....they called it " the Beast"...can you imagine traveling with that piano????!!!!!! Poor roadies.
Wow!! You ain’t lying! 🤣
Actually, they called it the whale.
@ruthlafler5622 you are right! My 79 year old brain tells lies to itself.
@@lilamuzik3385 Mine already does that! 🤣 No worries!

Good line! Boston : Foreplay/Longtime !
Patty-Jon has been playing piano since he was 6yrs old.

Listen to Journey with Steve Augeri and Arnel Pinay
Arnel is good, but doesn't hold a candle to Steve.
