I got an AirUp bottle and it actually works. It’s definitely not the same as drinking something actually flavored, but it does add a flavor that makes water more enjoyable. I think the ads influencers put out for it raises expectations a little too much, but for me it helped me get my water intake up.

It is good to avoid things that'll mess you up if you're in that boat. But in addition to that, it's also a good idea to develop healthy coping skills so you don't end up addicted to food or something else you have no way of avoiding.

as someone who didn’t think they were addicted but most definitely was addicted-weed is definitely psychologically addictive. you’re spot on. for like a whole month after everything sucked to do sober. everything was boring asf. a whole ass month of literally nothing bringing you even the tiniest bit of pleasure or joy. i 100% would not have made it through that month if i weren’t heavily motivated to get treatment for my sleep disorder (needed to pass a drug test to get it). feels dumb to say i was addicted to a plant but i 100% was.

A few times I was left with no supply and everything was so dull, I couldn't even enjoy music like I used to. Whenever the effect was about to wear off and I had stuff to do, I would smoke first because otherwise what was the point in my mind. I'll never try that thing again.

I don’t know if these are harmful at all, and I can see where they have their place (for example, I would use one because if I am sitting with my friends at a bar, I’m the only non-smoker. We’ll be on the patio and the longer we sit there the more I want one of their cigarettes. A Placebo to try and keep your hands busy, Which as a "Smoker" (Again, I have switched to Vapes, but once a Smoker always a Smoker... The same as an Alcoholic, You can NEVER go back as even a Touch can start that craving again!!! An Alcoholic is always an Alcoholic... A Smoker is always a Smoker... Its too easy to fall of the wagon and back in to the habit! You will never hear an Alcoholic call themselves an EX Alcoholic... ) - That is something I struggle with...

With all this "flavoured air," "no calories" advertising, we're circling all the way back to the vicious diet culture of my childhood. They're selling us fragrances so we can use plastic pods to encourage us to drink potable fresh water. A bunch of YTers I watch say it works but some dude I've never heard of tried it and it was awful. It feels like even disclosing an ad doesn't mean it's trustworthy.

I read (in comments of another youtube video) that the way air up works is basically relying on smell interactions that are really inconsistent for different people and not mentioning that at all. So it's basically a die roll. For some people it will actually work exactly as advertised. Other people will get almost nothing, or an actively unpleasant experience. Honestly it's kind of even worse than if it was just a scam, because some of the youtubers advertising it have probably used it and genuinely enjoyed it, with no idea a bunch of their fans who buy it will have a terrible experience.

When I met my wife, she smoked vape every other regular breath. She was addicted to the point that she felt uncomfortable if she went more than 20 minutes without her hand on a vape. I asked her to switch to nicotine free vape. After the nicotine cravings passed, I asked her to switch to FUM. After 1 year of using FUM, she no longer vapes. She actually rarely uses the FUM, for that matter. I am 1 month away from graduating from medical school, so I like to think I know enough to make an educated assessment of this device. I do not think inhaling essential oils could be considered healthy in any sense, but compared to what she was doing before FUM, this is so much better. It helped her kick her addiction to vapes. In my opinion, this shouldn't be the next thing you use permanently; it should be something you use to eventually reach the ultimate goal of quitting any kind of smoking. That being said, there has to be more research into the oils they use. I can not safely recommend using this without it. It is a tool used to quit, that is all.

I think it's a good product for people quitting nicotine but the fact that it's being advertised on channels that primarily have teenage audiences is very strange. Personally, I started smoking hemp cigarettes socially a few months ago because I can't always smoke weed and need to drive after a party (they are also known to be aids in quitting smoking). But then I started smoking cigs socially. The hemp cigs were almost a gateway into smoking the real thing. It was almost like they made me develop that oral fixation habit that smokers have. I could see this doing the same thing for teenagers who get their hands on it. "Well I already like the pull and the feel in my mouth, so why don't I try the real thing?" and the rest is history. Just a weird marketing tactic. It's the same as the juul being so heavily marketed as an alternative to smoking cigs that people started smoking cigs because they started with a juul.

well, people started smoking cigs because juuls have nicotine. if you put an addictive substance into anything, yes, people will get hooked on that particular substance and they will seek it in other forms if possible. i'm not really sure "flavored air" is an addictive substance (and i understand why swell doesn't understand how "flavored air" isn't just vaping but they are fundamentally very different).
personally, as someone who got hooked on vaping after trying to quit cigarettes, i feel like i am the target audience for this- when i was younger the vape thing was brand-new, and also restricted to older people in niche communities who mixed juices themselves, which was its own problem, but also the options for going totally nicotine-free existed back then. if you already have an oral fixation and an addiction to nicotine, satisfying one without the other does help you quit. the problem is, now it's commercialized and every vape you buy is disposable with an insane amount of nicotine content, so those of us who were using it as a cessation device (and kicked nicotine, but hadn't yet kicked the oral habit) found ourselves swept up in big tobacco's next move against the youth. it sucked. it still sucks, because the nicotine-free vapes do exist but they're hard to find. they also HEAT THE CHEMICALS which is the big difference between vapes and just inhaling flavored air. my doctors say vaping is not unsafe but i don't know if i believe them. vaping should've never become anything but a cessation device but i'm not surprised by corporate greed. just disappointed that we were so close to stomping out big tobacco entirely and here they are, getting teenagers addicted to this shit.
i don't trust sponsors who need to advertise so heavily to get an audience, so i'm not touching this thing until i have better information about what's inside it (flavored air =/= safe) but we interact with scented and flavored air all the time, i don't think it's impossible for it to be safe. i also would be very confused if this began a nicotine addiction for anyone when it has no nicotine. it's the same oral fixation that people satisfy with chewing gum and stuff, so why would they just decide to do regular vaping if all they're addicted to is having something in their mouth? exhaling smoke is part of the fixation too, and this device doesn't do that. maybe i just don't understand what motivates kids to vape nowadays, i was pretty sure it was about the nicotine because it's addictive, but possibly that has changed? if kids are overly willing to inhale just to inhale, even with no substances inside of it, that's concerning to me. if it's true, that means there's a societal pressure to vape that didn't exist before. and that's very troubling!

    @SATURN-ow 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +36

I'm a 170 days clean from cigarettes and vaping today. Im 21, started smoking at around 14.
It was definitely a choice for me, i started as a form of self harm and carried on after developing a restrictive eating disorder. My eating disorder was definitely a factor in making me smoke more. I don't think i was ever addicted like i should have been considering how long i smoked, quitting was relatively easy and, though i sometimes get the urge, it still is easier than advertised despite living with my indoor smoking mum.
I started vaping when i got to high school, maybe a year in? People around me, and crucially my brother, started vaping, pretending to be 18 and getting a vape from local stores during the "boom" of vaping. I started because the idea of flavours and stuff was attractive, a lot better than the nauseating smell of (especially industrial) tobacco cigarettes. I bought maybe 3-4 vapes in total over the years, the old fashioned ones, mixed my e-liquid myself and fiddled with the more technical aspects of vaping. Vaping became quite important to my ED as well, sometimes I'd hit for flavour because i didn't allow myself anything else.
170 days ago, i was preparing for surgery and decided to use it as an opportunity to quit for good. I'm used to ignore cravings and strong bodily urges to consume things (yk, like food) so it might have played a part for sure. The only bad cravings i get are when i drink alcohol, especially in social settings and even more so in uncomfortable social settings. I almost begged one of my partners' colleagues for a smoke at his Christmas work party because i was in sensory overload and had had a few drinks :/ Not a good look lol. Other than that, im really not seeing much of a difference to be honest.
Anyway, all of this to say ; I l'd stay away from this. In my and some other people's case, the habit of inhaling from a stick and feeling smoke pool in your lungs is the kick you're after. If this resembles it a little, I'd stay away from it. What made me quit vaping simultaneously to cigarettes was that breaking the habit was the most important thing for me. The nicotine I knew i could do without, the inhaling of *something* : not so much. My addiction resided more in the sensory process of smoking than the substance itself. I don't think i could have quit cigarettes without quitting vaping because one was the gateway to the other no matter in which order. I think it's interesting a company is advertising they can help people break their addiction without breaking the habit of putting something to your mouth to inhale, that's not something i believe would have been helpful to me or the smokers around me. Much like vaping, this feels like a trade sort of thing, using a semili of cigarettes as a crutch to stop smoking them but relying so much on the alternative that you can't quit that too. This makes sense as a business model, not as a genuinely helpful tool against addiction.
The positives though are that, unlike vaping, quitting these guys wouldn't produce as much waste. I currently have two pretty heavy duty vapes sitting around my room, just e-waste. One of them I plan to gift to a friend who only vapes disposables (so i feel like breaking away from disposables is a good-ish tradeoff, idk? Still battling with the idea of gifting someone an addictive thing yk), the other is so old it barely works anymore. They're tech though, they have screens and buttons, it's like throwing away a very old phone or something, it feels wrong lol. This weird wooden device though, I'd probably feel a whole lot better binning/taking apart to process the recylable bits.
In terms of health effects, i think it's also important to not that comunstion is one of the biggest issues with smoking, including the steam from vapes. This is not combustion but i honestly wouldn't personally want to inhale essential oils either, these things are potent. A lot of pets shouldn't be exposed to essential oil fumes, i don't think repeated use is good for us either.
All in all, i do think this is better than vaping, it's definitely better than smoking cigarettes, but i think it's important to acknowledge that addiction doesn't work in slow pace a lot of the time. Keeping yourself in an in-between state, where you're not a smoker/vaper but not clean either is definitely a recipe for relapse. To a non smoker, this is entirely pointless but to a smoker this is multiple downgrades from what you're craving. It's both so far removed that it wouldn't even begin to scratch the itch and close enough to keep you reliant on related habits, behaviours and coping strategies at the same time. A lot of times with vaping, i found myself craving a cigarette AFTER having vaped extensively because it felt like it should scratch the itch of irritating my lungs and giving me a weird headach but it just didn't. This probably would be similar but a lot worse because at least vaping produces enough smoke to pretend to feel similar enough. It was harder to stop smoking when i tried while vaping than it was quitting both, is my point. To that I'll also add, this company has a vested interest in keeping you in quitting limbo, making a product with a high instance of helping people quit for good wouldn't be a profitable endeavour, since you would lose most of your customers over time.
Also i really hate these business models of like subscription services but physical? Like there's only one brand of these, only one place to get cartridges thingies from, only one company to give money to. This is a printers and ink type of thing and, as someone pointed out in the comments too, a Airup and flavour pods idea. They sell you literal air with a smell and claim benevolence

It also doesn't ever mention the safety for human consumption and from what I can find there's really no standard for how much Iu of an essential is 'safe' to have in the mouth. no seriously. this is exactly what i've been thinking since seeing this product for the first time. it's kinda wild that it's not made fun of and that people pay this much for it. I'm no stranger to buying arguably "useless" things because they bring me joy and an avid vaper. but it just sounds so absurd?? both fum and air up.
and I also have a theory: I would be super on board if the price and branding matched the functionality/value they bring, aka if they were affordable commodities people could access easily, just cause they crave a bit of flavor. However, if I start to imagine a world in which this would be true and you could buy a flavored air tube at the corner store for two dollars... would anyone actually buy and use those??? I can't see it. So if both scenarios sound a bit absurd, is there really a need for this to exist?

@@dopaminedrought395 I think it's so popular _because_ it's a commodity. All of the branding and advertisements (and even the price, to an extent) convey the idea that this device is a never before seen revolutionary product. But when you break it down, it's really simple and generic. It's basically a reed diffuser in a compact tube to help you breathe it in, but all the branding and ads sell you a one of a kind device carefully engineered by two average, down-to-earth Canadian guys dedicated to sustainability, using only the finest of natural materials and ingredients.

I used to have a vape and used 0 nic juice, just because it was fun and I liked the flavor. I just did it for a summer & stopped because nic or no nic, still can't be good for you (and I was 18 & that's when they changed the law to 21 for tobacco) but it seems way cheaper than this... especially if you have a reusable vape that you can just switch to lower nic/no nic juice
I'm someone who LOVES smelly things - candles, incense, perfume, etc., and I have a bit of an oral fixation as well (I used to chain chew gum I'm school just so I had something to do with my mouth 😅) so if there was some way to guarantee complete and absolute safety of something like this, I'd absolutely love it. But... there's no way inhaling something recreationally can be 100% safe.
I've never smoked nicotine on the regular. I'll hit friends vapes occasionally and I'll smoke blunts, but that's it. I do smoke weed daily though. I use a dry herb vape, which is basically a little convection oven with controllable temperature that bakes off the psychoactive compounds for you to inhale and leaves behind dry, browned plant material instead of ash. Its way healthier than smoking, because I'm not inhaling literal smoke from burning and inhaling everything thats in the plant (plus the butane from the lighter), but its still definitely not GOOD for me. I don't know why there's not the equivalent for tobacco, or if there is why its not more popular. From my minimal experience with blunts, I'd guess it's because the tar from burning tobacco is a lot thicker and nastier than from burning weed, so maintenance would be an absolute headache. Especially when compared to the ease of using a small, sleek, yummy smelling and tasting nicotine vape

    TW: Eating Disorder
I'm really glad you mentioned the disordered eating. If this had been around when I was deep into my eating disorder back in the day (recovered now, thankfully), I absolutely would have been all over this. "I can have the flavour of eating without the calories and I can pretend that I ate? Sign me up!" I don't think there's any way to get data on this, but I'd be really interested to see what proportion of their actual users have ED's vs the proportion of their users trying to use this to quit smoking.
Also this just isn't close enough to the sensation of smoking to justify the price to me? Like, I wouldn't want to drop that much money on something that I didn't think would actually help me quit. There's flavour, sure, but there's no vapor, no nicotine, and nothing to exhale, as you pointed out. Plus, the cores only last A DAY? I feel like buying a progression of lower and lower nicotine vapes would have a higher chance of helping me quit, while taking far too long to catch up to the price sink of using the FUM regularly.

I can understand how this would work since on top of nicotine another big element of the addiction for many is the hand to mouth motion of smoking.
When my sister was quitting, nothing worked until she got a vape (not a gas station vape like Juul, a vape shop vape with the refillable tanks and bottles of eJuice). You can control how much nicotine is added to your juice when you have it mixed for you in the shop, so she was able to ween herself off little by little until she was down to 0mg. Then at that point it was weening herself off of the hand to mouth motion. She was eventually able to break that habit as well to be completely free.
So long winded reply short, I can see how this device would work for some people. As for myself, I'm neutral on it since I've never been a smoker... I can just see the sense in it.

I used vapes initially to try and quit smoking and I found that I just started vaping MORE than I smoked before.
when I swapped to vaping, it changed how I smoked. With smoking, I don’t smoke inside because I don’t want my home smelling like smoke. I always went outside, I washed my hands after (I worked with fabric which absorbs smells). So to smoke, I’d have to go outside and put shoes on etc. And when the cigarette was done I was done. But with vaping, suddenly I could smoke inside AND I would be taking a drag every few minutes over the span of hours because there was no set end point.
Now, it did help me break off of nicotine because I sought out non-nicotine vape liquid. But it didn’t help with the craving for the motions of smoking, of taking a drag etc.

My concern is that this product is only what? 6 years old? Any data they do have will not be thorough enough to really know if it actually stops smoking, especially after 5+ years. Plus they use essential oils? Which can be dangerous. Idk, I'd prefer something like this go through a more rigorous testing before being released to the market

Personally as someone who quit cigarette smoking and did use vapes for a time when I was trying to quit but then when I finally quit, I did it cold turkey (I use cannabis medically), I found that replacing one thing with the other was kind of just a substitution behavior and going cold turkey was just a better thing ultimately because vaping became more of a crutch for me, especially because it was easier to do it than to smoke. Also, because of how caustic essential oils can be, the idea of inhaling them so directly in a way that they are not vaporized feels sketchy to me personally.

I did use FUM to quit smoking(been smoking since the mid 90's) and I'm just under 5 months without smoking. What I found was the FUM was good for breaking habits surrounding the non nicotine part of the addiction but for the physical nicotine addiction it was still a "cold turkey" situation but the FUM did help. The sunk cost of buying it also helped, the cheapskate belligerent side of me wasn't going to fail the nicotine addiction part after I'd spent so much.
I rarely use it now so in terms of how safe it is etc. I'd say for me it was better because it was short term use vs what would probably have been continued longer term smoking.

I respect your stance on this. More people should do this. BTW- I don't feel judged even though I quit smoking by switching to e-cigarettes. I think these people are trying to do a good thing and if I was still a smoker I might consider trying this. The price seems a little steep for such a device and it would take near desperation for me to give in to it. I'm so cheap because I'm retired. I like how you approached this video and how you give the information so I am now a subscriber. You're very funny. If I didn't dislike flying so much I might have gotten one of these to use on the plane. In the long run if it's successful it's much cheaper than smoking.

While this is probably a useful tool for people who are looking to quit smoking/vaping, I HATE when companies say "no chemicals, all natural." The natural flavors they're using are chemicals, people can be sensitive to natural flavors, ESPECIALLY ESSENTIAL OILS, and regardless you're still inhaling those flavonoids into your lungs. I know that nicotine is the main chemical that the target demographic is trying to quit, but the marketing just feels misinformed. Also the study they cite about exposure to essential oils may not be taking inhalation exposure into account. Full disclosure, I vape nicotine, and I try to be informed as possible about these products, but there honestly aren't a lot of studies out there yet for long-term exposure for flavored inhalation products. Great video, Swell!
Edit: the assumption that FUM is safer than a nicotine or THC based vape, or an unflavored vape that someone is using to try to quit, doesn't seem rooted in actual science enough for me to think this is anything beyond marketing. Expensive marketing, at that.

How much of that was just purely the eating disorder and how much was the actual product I can't say. The kind I used was manufactured as 'aromatherapy' though and had onetime use products with things like caffeine or melatonin depending on what you wanted.

I bought a fum a few months ago to help quit vaping, i found it really helpful. The peppered flavors and the more minty flavors worked the best for me, i think because it was a stronger taste/flavor it hit my lungs harder and had a leftover "taste" and cooling from the mint that was the closest to resembling vape/smoke. Unfortunately i haven't quit yet do to some serious family problems that happened, making me run back to the nicotine lol. i will definitely be using Fum again to quit when im ready because it was the closest to quitting I've gotten since i started 10+ years ago when vapes first started becoming a thing, and i would recommend it to anyone struggling. Who knows about the chemicals in it, but for me not needing nicotine needs to come first in beating the addiction.

As a 20 year smoker, then vaper, and current Zyn user, I can attest: the hand-to-mouth ritual is almost more addictive than the nicotine. Or at least it persists after the physical withdrawl is over. This could definitely be helpful, and I looked into similar items a while back and the only problem I had with it was how expensive it was! It seemed a little ridiculous for something that contains nothing but essential oils.

I feel like having something to keep my hands occupied will help with my constant spacing and playing games for hours and having sweet flavors that arent full of sugar and calories can help cut my cravings but for the price that theyre selling it it's a bit much. I have a similar problem, but most grocery stores near me have little squirt bottles of water flavoring that are sugar free but they’re still sweet. You’d have to check the ingredients lists to see if you wanna see how “healthy” of an alternative they can be.
My favorite flavor is orange, and just a little bit does make water taste similar to orange soda, so the little bottles last quite a while even if you use it every day. The stores near me have store brand ones that are 99 cents, and then branded ones aren’t much more than that.
Also, I have a water bottle with a little “straw” thing for a mouthpiece that I can chew because it’s rubber. The other comments recommending gum and tea are also really good because I also use sugar free gum a lot, and while I don’t drink tea much, Tazo tea is very good. I hope you’re able to find something that works for you!

I absolutely agree, this would’ve made me want to just vape again especially because of the lack of air coming out of it. For me I don’t even care about the nicotine but I loved the feeling of lifting something up and then seeing the smoke, which the smoke itself is actually a cue that further reinforces the habit of smoking (just some fun neuroscience lol). I legit was only able to quit because I threw away my vape the day before my boyfriend and I met. Then I was with him pretty much 24/7 so I had no chance to either get a vape or to vape. Having someone with me who could distract me was the best help since I had been trying unsuccessfully to quit for like six months before that. I have broken that non-vaping streak because one of my friends has a vape at our wine nights but I at least don’t have one in my apartment anymore since I have no self control with them.

Hey there! So, I got one because I didn't feel like I was addicted to Nicotine, but the habit of inhaling. I wanted something that would duplicate, but still provide enough separation from vaping, no smoke. It worked for me and fairly quickly. It is nice when I get stressed and consider buying a vape... hits the spot. I thought the pepper one sounded repulsive, but it ended up being my favorite so surprised about that. Pepper and mint last really long, like over a week. The other ones don't last at all. The nastiest flavor is the cranberry one. I wanted to quit and figured the steep price for the starter was cheap compared to continuing my vape habit. Also, I could feel my chest rattling from vaping, so I needed to quit and was willing to give anything a try. I got a buy 1 get one deal too at New Year's. I've barely made it through my cores and lost the urge. Sorry this is disjointed.
