Here’s a little bit of backstory on why it’s called “best butter” it’s not because it’s the best butter ever made, but simply it’s preserved for special occasions, in England we describe anything meant for a special occasion as “best” like a “best suit”, it’s weird but you just sort of understand it.

To us in Ireland this is just normal butter (well it’s the “nice” butter but still normal) 😂
It’s so weird to see people in other countries talking about it as a speciality and something they paid a lot of money for.
Also it’s insane to me that some people are paying $5 for a block of butter.

    • @OoohUSuk

What’s your nice butter called and what makes it nicer than your regular butter? How much more does it cost?

    • @UIAL570
      @UIAL570 ปีที่แล้ว +37

@@OoohUSuk Kerrygold is the butter in the video and the nice butter I was talking about.
Average butter is sold in plastic tubs, the “nicer” butters tend to be in foils.
The average butter (in Dublin City where I live and am from) Dairygold, it’s pretty good. (You can also buy Dairygold in foil)
I’d say what makes Kerrygold nicer is the fat content and it’s purity compared to the other butters. It’s known as ‘creamery butter’.
((You can get a spreadable, plastic tub version, I presume this has more oil in it but not that much more than a block I’d say))
454g of Dairygold costs about €3.59 in Tesco. (I’m using Tesco prices for my comparison, prices lower and higher based on the shops you buy them in)
454g of Kerrygold is €4.29, but get a 227g, and it’s €2.49, I’d say the smaller size is more used.
You can get Connacht Gold (delicious butter imo) in 3 different types, the ‘spreadable’ tastes best to me, they put oil in it to make it smoother. It’s usually €3.70 for 454g
The foil, block butters are hard and therefore are usually left unrefrigerated because if they are put in the fridge they take far too long to readjust to room temperature and are stiff and unspreadable.
I never thought I had so many opinions about butter.

It's very expensive in Canada because of the sheer difficulty of importing the product into the country. We have laws that only allow a very, very small quota of imported dairy products. We have a very strict dairy protectionist laws which makes imported butter scarce, and extremely expensive due to the tarrifs added.

Kerrygold is really good, though, and one of the reasons is that it is more milk fats than water.

It’s just impossible to find dairy that’s as good and cheap as the stuff you find in the cheapest, lowest quality German or Alpine grocer. It's because you're not supposed to import dairy products into Canada. We have a very strict, dairy protectionist laws. Certain companies can import dairy products, but you need a special licence, and they can only import a small quota. That isn't to say that it's impossible to get imported butter, but the extremely high price is due to the sheer difficulty of getting the product into the country. (Cheese are exempt/have special rules that make it easier, but still pricey.)
