The epic result, Video, confirms this in what a quarter million words never could. Having owned an Aluminum sail-built boat for more than 3 decades, you may consider not painting the topsides. I have had to repaint mine every ten years or so. SV Skoiern IV
This is so impressive. We look forward to seeing her in real life. Funny fact: Sirius was displayed during the 1984 Hiswa, as he was built by my uncle, who owned Kolibri Jachtbouw at the time. Sirius is hull number 1.
Thank you for taking us along, it is very exciting to see the progress. Both of you looked a tad cold and I had to laugh when you said you were training for high latitude sailing 😂 ! Humidity and wind in The Netherlands indeed make it feel like a polar experience. She looks stunning already, can’t wait to see the interior build and hope you will be able to find a nice blend of metal and wood for your new home! Wishing you all the best in making many important decisions!
My dad was a precision machinist, and my brothers all showed mechanical aptitude, building houses and boats, etc. This is a step into my past that I always relished: the mechanics of the thing. In a past life or two, I was at least a boat fisherman. So imagine my head spinning at the build of an "aluminium" boat! Love it! Thanks, you guys!
She looks incredible. I think I am just as excited to see your boat go in the water as my own. This project has been an incredible learning experience for all your viewers. Can't wait for the next installment.
I find these boat building episodes so interesting. I love them and can not wait for the next video. You guys are doing a great job at documenting the process. Thank you :)
Great episode, you’ve got a pleasant “Fred Rogers” vibe when you interview folks. DSIV has a gorgeous hull. After watching the build, seeing her live someday will be super sweet. Congratulations!
What a love for the sea you guys have , Now a aluminum boat to start more life adventures . When I got into watching sailing videos many years ago ,you guys were the only ones doing it with a TV show . .Hope the new boat fly's through the water when it's done . It will be well anticipated this summer .
Damn, that has got to be the most well built aluminium yacht I've ever seen! I was thinking that it has to be in The Netherlands before I saw the roadsigns and heard the boatbuilders talk :)
Paul and Sheryl, your videos on the build process are superb and it was great to see some of the interior aluminum work, in this video. Can’t wait to see the finished, painted hull! Only negative for you is that you’re in cold and damp Holland while we’re on the warm and humid sea of Abaco! Keep the videos coming! Hope our paths cross again, when you finish exploring the high latitudes. Lucky you! From Mark, Jane and Pilot the Poodle SV Aida
Wow. Well, that video kicked off some serious coveting on my part. Both the boat and the job of building it. Must be incredibly fulfilling to see it come together. I think I'd be forced to buy two. One, finished, to sail. And another unpainted, with no interior, to hang on the wall as a piece of art.
Hi mate from Brisbane Australia Love seeing your boat build in aluminium I am a fitter welder and fully appreciate all the fine engineering that has gone into your boat build hopefully some day I’ll be able to build an aluminium sail boat myself Looking forward to your next Cheers 😊
I can only imagine what a thrill it must be to see your boat being built thus far ( no matter how many sailboats you have built). To call your own and sail to distant albeit cold shores. Congratulations 👏
Looks great, what a beautiful job being done. Looking forward to seeing the CE inspection process and measures taken to protect the aluminum from corrosion. 😎
I love your boat! It’s beautiful, and obvious that so much thought, and experience has gone into the design of it! I’m so excited to see her finished, and and looking forward to the many adventures that will come for you two! I will own a sailboat in a few years, I just got my fist “boat”, does a kayak count? 🤣🤭 I needed to get a taste, for the enjoyment, and see how much I enjoyed it before I invested the rest of my adult life living on the water… I really got intrigued with the cruising lifestyle, and the modern use of sailboats about 2019-2020 I used to want a trawler, then became an adult and started buying fuel for a truck, and now I’m all about wind powering my boat!🤣🧐 then watching a young couple here on TH-cam using solar, and wind generating electricity for their boat!💡batteries, and electric drive motor for propulsion. Made it even more attractive! Of course they have a “small” 39’ Pearson…not a large Aluminum boat, not sure on the length of your boat, I will have to look back at your previous videos to get more information about it, and enjoy those episodes! Thanks for sharing your experiences and your lives with all of us! If it wasn’t for channels like yours I would not have a dream to work to! Edit: I’m now watching your previous video about how you are using hybrid electric propulsion!
Cheryl and Paul - nothing less than fascinating stuff - at this point she is one of a kind thanks to your research and input. There must have been times when all that decision making was a tough job. Looking awesome.
So beautiful! It looks to me like this unique vessel getting her keel it's like a gorgeous lady that just finished putting on her "stilettos". Stunningly, she put on her heels still under her nudity. ( Oh my, oh my, this Portuguese way of looking at boats is still affecting me. Even after 43 years leaving in Canada) LOL. I can't wait to see her in full makeup, all dressed in her sails, cavalcading the waves of the North Atlantic. She for sure will match the beauty of the portuguese Creola, and the grandeur of the Nova-Scotian Bluenose, our beloved Canadian icon. Muito obrigado, for sharing.
I'm very excited to see this boat launch this summer and the new adventures you guys are going to have with it. You absolutely must sail back to the Bahamas on this new boat! Your Bahama series is my favorite group of episodes! I've watched them over and over and over! I'm also hoping you make your way back to Annapolis again. I live in the Washington DC area and always at least try to make several boating events there when I can. I'd love to get a glimpse of this one in person when it's finished.
Fascinating series on how KB builds boats. The quality and attention to detail is incredible. Thanks for sharing your experience. Looking forward to sea trial and sailing adventures.
I am both excited and happy for you guys. What a great experience to be able to influence and witness the creation of your boat. I am still learning from mine but will eventually build an aluminum hybrid trawler (wife is no a sailor) once the technology catches up with my requirements.
Thanks for sharing your build. I am especially impressed with the enjoyment and sense of pride of the work crew. They are obviously engaged in their art. SV TUNE CAT
Hello guy's, I've seen your other boats, the first one y'all built I'm thinking the wood one and all the Distant Shores boats they were beautiful boast. I can't wait to see this amazing boat. Paul makes sailing look so so wonderful.
This is very exciting to see how much has been done since November. I can't wait to see the interior installation. I can imagine how ready you are to sail this beauty.
That’s a good episode, and a good look at all the aluminum is shaped and reinforced. Looks like you guys are going to be doing some high latitude Sailing. I live and sail in Juneau, Alaska so I’ve been doing that type of sailing for 30 years. I’ve also been on aluminum jet boats in pretty rough seas and have seen just how much that aluminum will handle. It’s amazing material.
General Comment. Its been a while since I started watching the new boat design and negotiation process for your new boat. It looks to be an awesome project and something to be excited about. I heard one comment about the hours to build the hull being 3 to 4 thousand hours to that point. Just thinking about the cost for those “Hull” hours @ $100 an hour would be $400,000 just to weld up the hull, Yikes! This must truly be a Million dollar Yacht. Not you average Beneteau.
Hi Paul, I understand that you lead will be poured directly in the aluminum of your keel embryo. On our Boréal 47.2, the lead is insulated from the aluminium of the hull to prevent any corrosion in the keel embryo in case the hull were to be breached (we have 10mm of alu plate in the keel embryo but despite that the lead is insulated). Is there any precautions taken by KB yacht builders to avoid galvanic corrosion there please? Salutations d’Ibiza, Yan
Awesome project 👌 👏 👍 The only downfall is the video was too short😎 pls don't make us again wait too long for the next video 🙏 we wish you all the very best of LUCK 🤞🤞🤞👍👌👏🥰 ✌❤🍀
If your Orion 49 will have any "isolated" DC systems, the article by Nigel Calder in Professional Boat Builder magazine (#201 Feb/Mar) may be of immediate interest. ABYC standards for such systems are being revised/upgraded.
I hope you have made provisions for sn iside helm station, its not fun sailing the high latitudes in freezing weather sometimes with precipitation. Good luck and happy adventures
It's unfortunate that efficient sailing hull forms, don't have pleasing sailing vessel lines, above and below the waterline. Incredibly skilled yard and efficient craftsman.
The hull is 10% of the build. from experience, integral tanks are good for fuel. For grey water & black water use composite tanks, electrolysis will eat the tank tops of aluminum tanks
What a brilliant team of fabricators, you can see the pride that they have all taken in their work the boat is absolutely beautiful.
The epic result, Video, confirms this in what a quarter million words never could. Having owned an Aluminum sail-built boat for more than 3 decades, you may consider not painting the topsides. I have had to repaint mine every ten years or so. SV Skoiern IV
Super cool release! Thank you friends! your adventures have inspired many people to realize their dreams.🤩
Thanks so much for the kind words! Its been great to hear from and meet up with people who saw our films before making their decision to go cruising 😍
This is so impressive. We look forward to seeing her in real life.
Funny fact: Sirius was displayed during the 1984 Hiswa, as he was built by my uncle, who owned Kolibri Jachtbouw at the time.
Sirius is hull number 1.
The builder's hope is to be able to display her at Hiswa this year! We're crossing our fingers!

That's a real nice hull shape!
I must say, she has beautiful lines and the yard does exceptional work.
This boat builder deserves to be known. Hope that the interior and finishing team will be at the same level.
I'm so excited for you two!!! Can't wait to see the new adventures on Distant Shores IV.
The boat looks fantastic! That's some skilled workmanship indeed.
What patience to get to this point, and what a feeling it must be to see such fast progress...
She looks incredible!! Thanks for taking us along.
It's the "Airstream of the Sea" !!! Can't wait to see her done !!!
Brilliant, the fabrication is perfect. This project is right on track and we can't wait to see both sailing soon. Thank you so much for this video.
Our pleasure David!
You must be on top of this world seeing your passion and joy come to life !!

Glad you like them Bill!
That is one gorgeous mono, that build and hull shape and materials, it doesn't get any better
Wow, this is so far my favorite sailboat
Great episode, you’ve got a pleasant “Fred Rogers” vibe when you interview folks. DSIV has a gorgeous hull. After watching the build, seeing her live someday will be super sweet. Congratulations!
Can't wait to see it splash in the water, looks like an awesome boat
I am almost excited as the owners then again . A great boat build.
Thanks John!

Thanks Thomas! Yes it really is a huge thrill! And we'll have some big adventures sailing north as we head to Svalbard to northern Distant Shores...
Its a beautiful boat and excellent workmanship....cant wait to see the next chapter....

A fine boat for sure. Thanks for the high quality video of the construction.
Pretty, shiny things. A work of art and craftsmanship. 😍⛵️
So happy for you guys. She is beautiful.
The Orion is a wonderful design and the aluminum work is incredible! That is truly a special boat in the making.
Wow this is a super fast boat build, amazing 🤩
Wow. It is really taking shape. Superb construction
I have loved the whole build so far thanks for sharing your new adventure yacht build with us,and to see the smiles on your face is so inspiring 🐬🦋🐬⛵️
Love it! The quality and attention to detail are evident. I may have to discuss Ghostship Warriors boat build with them
The brief shot of Sheryl's face told the whole story... Fair Winds this Summer...
Very interesting. Would love to see the process of putting the lead in the keel. 🇨🇦
Coming soon! We'll post some shots.
Amazing build. Thanks so much for sharing.
Glad you have been enjoying it Loanword!

Thanks 👍yes we'll film details such as the insulation and systems too!
Looking very nice. Appears very well constructed. (We have an aluminium hybrid diesel electric the same length). Keen to see how it performs.
From the design i am thinking you want to spend more time closer to home. Perfect boat for the great lakes.

I am interested in learning about your corrosion control. I also would like to hear your reasoning behind not having a keel-stepped mast.
Beautiful boat 👍
Beautiful boat👍💫
dutch aluminium, a class act.
Fun to see the process. I cant ever afford such a boat but waching like this, i can pretend I did :)
Really amazing boat.

Yes Richard, the inside steering station pilot salon is one of the major reasons we wanted the new boat.
Great video as always
Very strong boat and looks so elegant in the design! How to they get this homogeneous fuzzy surface on the aluminium over the waterline?
It's unfortunate that efficient sailing hull forms, don't have pleasing sailing vessel lines, above and below the waterline. Incredibly skilled yard and efficient craftsman.
So cool.... congratulations
Thanks for sharing 😊

Wonderful, I prefer this aluminum structure than those of fiber glasses. what about all exposed aluminum edges? are they going to be all smoothen?
The aluminium work is fantastically nice. Other than for antifouling why even paint her. The paint will use peel off and need replaced...
I am looking forward to learning how wood interior components are fastened to aluminum structure.
love this series
Thank you
What an amazing skill of workman ship. Do you plan to add insulation to the hull before adding the interior woodwork? Cheers.
Been following build…saw water & fuel tanks installed & yer putting in swing keel…What about “Black-Water” & “Grey-Water” Tanks?
Exciting stuff!
Looks beautiful.
