The Farmall & International 460, 560, 660 Tractors

The Farmall and International 460/560 tractors were built from 1958-1963 and the 660 from 1959 to 1963. They were an attempt by IH to modernize it's tractor fleet, but, unfortunately, the 560 used the essential 1939 Farmall M drivetrain from 1939 and were not filly tested prior to widespread release. Problems arose almost immediately when the larger engined tractors were put under full load. at the last moment, IH had upped the size of the 560 engine to directly compete with the John Deere 730 which proved to be a catastrophic mistake since the ball bearings in the bull gears of the final drives fell out of their cases and essentially jammed the gears causing catastrophic failures. All in all, the failures were not widespread and only occurred in areas where farmers were pulling heavy tillage tools, but the failures were catastrophic. IH recalled ALL of the 560 tractors and fixed them for free, working round the clock and spending millions of dollars

That’s amazing!!! I never knew that Farmall offered the 460 and 560 in LP gas!! Love the details in the old ads!! How much tractors changed huh?!? And crawlers too!! Still worth their weight in gold, even if it just to sit, stare at and polish up from time to time!!😁

This is a great presentation and very informative. Thanks so much for doing the work and sharing all this information. It’s kind of sad to remember that the problems with the 560 transmissions was one of the things that brought the great company to its knees. The musical selection really adds to the viewing pleasure.
