Structure-wise, the game feels a tad too restrictive. They didn't need to go full open world but having a few hub worlds with a shop or two, maybe a gambling mini-game, etc. could've made the world feel more open. Beyond Good & Evil did that quite well. It had the lighthouse, the Mammago garage, the city area and Zelda dungeon-style locations. Or maybe they could've done a third-person version of Deus Ex Human Revolution where you could go inside people's apartments and loot stuff.
I always loved the worldbuilding and atmosphere in this game, great music too. I don't think I ever beat it but I remember playing it multiple times to different parts in the story. More than anything I just loved the vibe this game gave, it was a perfect sort of cyberpunk-neoclassical that I find really appealing.
I'm in love with the lighting and surfaces in this game. Playthroughs take me twice as long as they should be as I'm too busy admiring the environments.
In my opinion the weakpoints of the game is the following: 1) combat - but for different reasons: There's a big variety yet the combat never feels really interesting, because most of the action simply falls short of the facettes it could have. 2) structure of the level - It's basically always one way and doesn't let you go back 3) platforming - the view is really nice, but it's extreme plain and boring About the combat: From all the playthroughs Ive seen. Regeneration is a trap, people spend, better said: waste a lot of time on particular fights while you don't need to do that. E.g. you can beat the boss of the 6th Episode within mere seconds (around 8?) with the right combo. --- On the video: While I could hear your voice, I had some difficulties undestand what you said from time to time, because the ingame sound was (relative to you a tad to loud. Also: Thanks for doing a review about the game, even tho it's so old :)
Thanks for the comments, this was a lost gem I never completed but perfect to review now as it still holds up. I'll try to lower background sound a bit more. Thanks!!
Aren't there enemies that reflect the damage you do and thus require Regeneration? Besides, it's mainly a tool that enable players to learn when and how to dodge enemies patterns without requiring previous memorization (so a margin of error is expected and corrected via Regeneration). Also, the combat flow differs greatly on the Memory Hunter difficulty.
@@metastase895 Thank you for comment. I think I should clarify a few things. I hope you'll find the answer below elaborating on the matter. If there are any questions / different opinion feel free to voice them. :) TLDR: Regen pressen is useful in the beginning but I think people use them in a way that hinders their progress. First, in my opinion the combat flow doesn't differ that much at all, but I havn't played much Mem Hunter these days, so I might not remember well. Enemies are simply more aggressive and you take more damage. Their Health, your Damage, your pressen effects etc. all stay the same. Elite Enforcers reflect damage, correct. However you "never" die to them - unless you Junk Bolt them when on 1 hp. On Script Kiddie it's impossible. On Errorist Agent I don't know for sure, but I think when I tried it was only Memory Hunter + Junk bolt. Regeneration Pressens are helpful yes. But most players use them (in my opinion) wrong. If you want to have a regen combo, just use the Punch Punch Punch to set up some fast healing, don't need to think much very simple. Use other combos mainly for damage OR cooldown reduction. If you place regen pressen in your combo, you'll face two problems 1) You put them early and might have to end the combo because you take damage, dodge badly so you don't deal damage and prolong the fight a lot. 2) You put them late and might have to ....., so you don't get any regen The more you include regen in your main combo the longer the fights take, the more you need to use regen. It's a kind of vicious circle. Nonetheless sometimes you want to play it save and go for a quick regen in between.
Definitely not a lot of memory remixes. There's the tutorial one, the E3 presentation one and the final one that you do twice. So... three, three and a half? :P
This one was weird, the environments are super detailed and rich with environmental storytelling, lore is pretty deep with history. The platforming was boring as bricks tho, they should have taken inspiration from Prince of Persia instead of the trend at the time (auto platforming) but hindsight is 2020. The combat is bland too but has depth taking inspiration from Capcom's GodHand with all the moves being customizable and Batman Arkham series but does neither well. It feels stiff and doesn't flow at all and very is unbalanced. Story is boring as dry paint and wares ludonarritive dissonance on it's sleeve, weird how DontNod focused on story and stuck to it gives us mid games like Life is Strange. Clearly they didn't recognize their talent but it is what it is.
The popups at keywords are annoying AF. Every time a console is mentioned, got to put a crappy jpg in the corner. Stop. I'm trying to look at gameplay not pictures in the corners. FFS, everyone knows what a PS3 looks like. At one point, there were 4 pics covering the video. At that point, I stopped watching and decided to look at a review elsewhere.
Such a fantastic soundtrack!
Just played it. Dont like the genre but i fell in love
This game was made with Love and Care.
Was the main reason I first got the game on the 360. Glad I had a chance to play it again today!!
Unlike life is strange
I love this criminally underrated game, and I always got a bit of a Beyond Good And Evil vibe from it, also Enslaved.
All good games!!
Same here!!

Exactly. And a few post-game arena fights or NG+ enemy group/collectible location remixes would also go a long way to increase its replayability.

The game did have great environments and story to back it up. Just wished the combat was a bit more refined but still a good game for its time.
A 8.5/10 for me loved it deserved a sequel
Game looks super stunning still its amazing!
I'm with that the game still holds up today. I'm happy that the PC gaming is still going on strong to also improve the classics.

Yep, the visuals here were no slouch!!
The art direction is so good. I don't know what level it is but the sewer with the destroyed robot servants. The atmosphere is great.

Perfect game. Loved it all through. Great visuals
Awesome review. Only the sound was a little bit of
Thanks for the kind words, I'll check on the sound in future videos. Hope you enjoy the rest of my channel!!

Can you elaborate on the ludonarrative dissonance on display here?

One of the greatest games of 2013 and criminally underrated
