Look in -- to the eye of the storm Look out -- for the force without form Force Ten off of the Hold Your Fire album as suggested by Flybri1971. This song might be Geddy's first use of chords as the main part of a song.
@dleblanc343 This bass sounds closer the the Wal bass than my others. Ricks are nice but they are way overpriced. I haven't gigged in a while but the MusicMan is my general use bass. They're still a good value and are very well made.
it really is the humbucker. Amazing value if you're Wal tone-chasing. My $299 sterling music man bass sounds extremely close to a wall bass, at literally fractions of the price.
Troy... I thank you so much for the incredible musical insight that you provide, in that I can see the notes being played (lol sometimes the hand is quicker than the eye and I cannot) and the top tier magical sound!
I think it's a good thing to try to challenge yourself and play things that are a little bit above your skill level. Just keep in mind that it will take some time and effort and can be frustrating. It's important to play the things you like as well. The first songs by Rush that I learned (I think I'd been playing for around a year at the time) were off of the "All The World's A Stage" album. Fly By Night In The Mood WhatYou're Doing Bastille Day Lakeside Park and onward from there.
@TJH3113 Another awesome cover!!! I watched the grove on the R30 DVD and it looks like Alex is the one triggering the keyboard hits with his feet while Geddy rolls on through the section.
@TJH3113 Awesome Job once again! Looks like on the R30 DVD Alex is the one hitting those keyboard parts with his foot pedals which is awesome because it's a tricky rhythm.
@DJDannyC113 Thanks. It's a Stingray. I once had a Sterling that I liked a lot. I don't cover the material where Geddy used his "flamenco" technique so well, like on Animate, but I could listen to Cold Fire.
@salbernardo Thank you. The bass is a Musicman Stingray Five String. I don't have any "words of wisdom" off the top of my head but I wish you luck and have fun with it.
@YAYYourDead Ya, I know that. I have been practicing his "flamenco" style playing a lot lately. A good song to practice that on and build up endurance is "Animate". It is almost all alternating strokes with one finger. I end up playing on the index for awhile, then switching to the bird finger for awhile....its tiring.
I just played this song in my bass practice tonight. I love it! I don't agree with the mechanics of the way you play the intro passage, but I still like your interpretation. I tend to use my thumb to do downstrokes on the open A in that passage.
I know for a fact I'm getting a bass for christmas WOOT! I may issue myself a challenge to figure this out. I do play guitar so I can move my knowledge of notes and scales over its the technique with the fingers and getting dexterety that will be a problem. to be honest I find bass more fun than guitar to play lol
Awesome Job! Love this song, you do such a great job. also u have the exact three basses I want eventually. I know you probably have a lot of requests but it'd be really cool if you could cover Cold Fire or Animate both off the counterparts album. Also is that a Music man stingray or sterling?
Why does Geddy quit playing at about 3:30 and let the sequencer play that short part before the ride out? Also, It would be cool to hear you play the TFE and R30 variation, where Geddy changes the notes slightly immediately before the guitar solo.
@ThePsychicSasquatch Probably too tough for even him to sing and play at the same time? Or they just preferred the keyboard tone to that of the bass. Maybe.
I just don't understand how to play the double stops at the into/postchorus WHILE keeping a steady rhythm on the open A. I've been trying and I just can't seem to physically do it.
It would be difficult to put into words. Keep plugging away at it and I'll think about how I could put a video together to better explain/demonstrate it. The simplest way I could describe it woul be - when you are not striking those two-note chords, you need to be peddling that open A string.
I'm having a hard time with those chords, I feel like I may be digging in too hard or something, like I'm only supposed to just graze the strings or something. Could you tell me how you manage that?
The InfinitySkull well this guy doesnt play it anything like geddy does. You are probably playing it more like geddy is than he is if you are playing it hard. This guy in this vid is more of a traditional bassist with a very light plucking style. Geddy has a really nasty aggressive style. Even back in the 80s he was never really a light plucker. Watch vids of geddy playing this song live. He does the entire song with 1 finger and really murders those chords. Hits them really hard.
7 years later, I’m sure you’ve figured it out. But regardless, it really boils down to the fact that music man basses have a humbucker pickup - the same pickup type in a Wal bass (the bass Geddy played on this song, and the whole album). Basically, if you have a bass with a humbucker, throw some light gauge strings on it and you’re off to the races.
Just learning this.. Love this cover Troy, sounds spot on!
Awesome! Thanks!

This makes me wonder what Geddy would've done if he started using 5 or 6 strings.
how about 12 string
He used one on this album on one or two of the tracks i believe
Things us mere mortals may never hope to play, I assure you
Believe it or not but the 5 string confused Geddy. He used a 5 for just one song but he strongly prefers a 4 bass :)
@@naturaljoe7397 he used a 5 string on Lock and Key I think
You just made a RUSH fan sir.....thanx.
Great to hear!
Good tone. Love playing this song.

tough times demand tough talk! and tough bass!
Truth!
I think they are a really well made bass and a good value. I used one for years as my main bass and it really suited everything I played on it.
@TJH3113
Another awesome cover!!! I watched the grove on the R30 DVD and it looks like Alex is the one triggering the keyboard hits with his feet while Geddy rolls on through the section.
Muito muito show.
Ohhh very very good.....
Thank you Ricardo.

@halodemo65
No, I didn't touch the low B. I used this bass because it sounds a little closer to the Wal than my other basses.
@DJDannyC113

It's one of the first songs where Geddy used chords as the basis for the main riff.
Might sound marginally a little different but its a lot of fun to play the entire main riff with just one finger
YOu did this one on my birthday :D Great job :D I used to play this one alot.
@Annonymus121
Thank you.
@logan2112five
Thank you so much.
This dude is so good he killed his audience. All kidding aside, well done.
@cygnus434 Look up Force Ten live in Frankfurt. Geddy just uses his index finger. A lot.
Nice work man!
@salbernardo
Thank you. The bass is a Musicman Stingray Five String. I don't have any "words of wisdom" off the top of my head but I wish you luck and have fun with it.
Cara e brabo demais!.
Eu não entendo o que você quer dizer
@@TJH3113 he said you're awesome
@goteeboy
There's no bass in "Losing It", just keyboards. Great song and lyrics though.
@Flybri1971
Thanks and Happy Halloween to you as well.
@constantine2112
Thank you.
Awesome ! :D as usual!
@kalisota
Thanks, I try and take good care of them. Putting them back in the case when I'm done playing, wiping the strings down...all that stuff.

NIce job man!!
@TJH3113 Cold Fire, Alien Shore, and Virtuality are all amazing songs that I'd love to see you cover.
@SlickSmoot16
Thanks. I'll have to check that out.
Not at this moment but I'd never say a bad word about it.
@eduardobadra
I might have a small amount of bass and mid boost on the guitar, that's it.
@soopahsoopah
I think those keyboard "hits" and "flourishes" probably make it a difficult part to groove over live.
@coosomo
Thanks. I wasn't planning on it.
Like I wrote yesterday....are you the clone of Geddy Lee? Brilliant playing Troy!!!! Marvine :-)
Thank you Marvine.
oh my!
thank rick!
love the groove at 2:58... it is deceptively tricky though.. I don't think they really nail it live.
This is just the bass straight into the amp with a little mid-boost.
Great as usual- what bass is that? I am a beginner on bass (touched it once) any words of wisdom? Thanks Sal
This is fuckin great. I'm learning this song rn on a sterling 5
Thanks Tom. Excellent!
I just played this song in my bass practice tonight. I love it! I don't agree with the mechanics of the way you play the intro passage, but I still like your interpretation. I tend to use my thumb to do downstrokes on the open A in that passage.
Im pretty sure he plucks the D string as well when he plays the G string on the record, lending support to your argument to use your thumb

Cool. Let me know what you get. You can always play with a pick if your fingers don't cooperate.
Bass legend geddy lee then there is troy

Are you eventually going to redo this one with the Wal?
Probably not, since I've sold the Wal.
TJH3113 Aw man, that’s a bummer.
@cjtrapper
Maybe after Halloween is over and I can get back to playing.
you should cover Kid Gloves :) either that or play Bytor Exit Stage Left edition! nah just kidding
@ThePsychicSasquatch
Probably too tough for even him to sing and play at the same time? Or they just preferred the keyboard tone to that of the bass. Maybe.
@goteeboy
I did By-Tor.

Happy belated birthday. It was the least I could so.
@toberichmoe
I've done Kid Gloves and the studio version of By-Tor. I'll pass on the Exit Stage Left version.
@melqui33
Hello and thank you. I've already done Distant Early Warning, you should be able to find it on my channel.
Great…
Great cover Man, I have a question, how much did the license cost?
Thank you. What license?
@@TJH3113 the permision to use the song in your video
Is this song meant to be played on five strings or did you adapt to it?
@runewalsh6661983
Not really. I always had a problem playing their stuff - too fast for me.
The tempo seems a little faster than i remember it???
Hey!
Great job playing, I know this video is old but do you remember what kind of strings you were using?
Thank you. Back then I believe I was using Curt Mangen strings for the EADG and I'd usually buy a heavier gauge single B string.
hello. I congratulate you, so please play Distant Early Warning
One finger to pluck.
Is that a triplet pattern at around 3:26?
In most cases it has a lower B string.
@cygnus434
My thumb is useless. Thanks.
how are you EQing the bass here?
When you play the chords, do you use two fingers or just one? I cant tell and Im having a hard time with it.

Is a 5-String one string higher, or lower?
Wow nice tone for that song, really fitting. Not like your Rick and its beautiful heavy sound. God I wish I could afford one of those basses
@Annonymus121 I actually rather playing with my fingers.
how di you get the tone of the bass that geddy uses in this song?

Awesome.. but add vocals and they key-work also to get to the next level :)
Thanks... I'll get to work on that.
Sort of, I guess.
