I have watched both your Fender and Rickenbacker videos for this song. Geddy would be flattered. You are truly an inspiration for anyone wishing to play bass guitar. I watch your videos and catch myself smiling. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us.
+John Galt You summed it up perfectly. This is my first time watching and I was doing the exact same thing - sitting there smiling. It is mesmerizing seeing something so familiar performed so flawlessly. How - how can Geddy Lee play and sing that way? I can't even. Also, I resisted buying a 4003 last week and instead picked up a Jazz Bass V Plus, which is a really nice instrument. Seeing the Rick though...wow. I've wanted one since I was a kid -and- lately, I can't get Roundabout out of my head.
Every time I want to learn a new rush song, the first thing I'll do is pull up a video of you covering it. You have actually taught me more rush songs than sheet music has. For that, I thank you. Excellent covers. Keep up the great work.
Whenever I see something like this that enhances just how much is going on with the individual instruments it makes me appreciate the artist more! Excellent job!
You're just smiling and effortless and whatnot and I'm over here picking up my jaw in incredulity. FANTASTIC job, sir. This is not only a first class tribute to one of the greatest bassists, but it also gives me huge insight into Geddy's weird 'n' wonderful world of how in the heck he does his thing. My hat is off, and thanks again!!
So far you are the only person whom I have seen play the bass part underneath the solo correctly (to my own ear) and with double stop embellishment to boot! Nice work. Now I feel like I learned that part pretty close to what Geddy did on the original. However, I am sure that if they ever put out the isolated track for this, I am probably messing up a good bit of the rest of the song!
I really look forward to all your posts. Time to get the popcorn, sit back and watch the show. This is a masterful version of this song, and thank you for sharing!
@Pauliewanna Thanks Pauliewanna that means a lot coming from you. You've been blessed to have had the opportunity to meet them, not sure how I'd handle that situation - by fainting or vomiting perhaps? Another advantage Geddy has is his use of super light gauge strings 30-90's which are incredibly light, loose and easy to really twang on.
30 year guitar player here and a couple years ago decided to pick up bass for a band that needed a bass player. It's been a real interesting transition. I hate saying this but I never really knew how absolutely hard the bass is to play correctly. I'm still a guitar player that plays bass but loved watching your vid so much. You've inspired me to attempt to play this. Great job and thanks for sharing!
@riskydiablo I was probably playing for around 3 years when Permanent Waves came out and I began learning material from that album. It was a very slow process, first trying to pick out the parts by ear, then trying to play them up to speed to make sure they were correct and finally, stringing all the pieces together into the completed song. It took quite some time and a lot of practicing to get to the point where I played them with some fluidity.
That is so solid.....Like comments before, I find myself smiling listening to that Ric growl through that solo........I played in a band years ago, and we attempted Analog Kid..(it was the only song our singer could remotely handle) and after watching you play it, I realize that I should have put the bass away and become a roadie......You are the man!!
@Sanson101 Yes, I do think that "ghost notes" are an integral part of his sound. He really went wild with them on the Power Windows / Hold Your Fire albums. He'd vary them from heavily muted notes to straight "tics" with no note value assigned to them. I'm not sure what purpose he uses them for but I've always used them quite a bit myself (sometime too much). I would use them for time keeping and to help "lock in" with whatever music I happened to be playing.
Thanks. It was so long ago and I've never kept track of that sort of thing. It takes as long as it takes. Learning it and getting it to the point where I could play it through without making any blatant errors are two different things though. Slow and steady wins the race.
@riskydiablo Part Two - My first bass was an awful medium scale Cameo bass. My mother bought it for me from a record store that sold instruments and offered lessons as well. 2nd - medium scale Fender MusicMaster - that was "big time" for me. 3rd - Rickenbacker 4001 Fireglow $425 brand new which was a lot of money at the time. 4th - Fender Precision 5th - Peavey T40 6th - Rickenbacker 4001 Fire Engine Red 7th - Ibanez Roadstar II 8th - Musicman Sterling 9th - Musicman Stingray 5 10th - This Rick
Another astounding cover! I'm actually in the process of learning this song in hopes of playing it live soon and the first thing i thought of when the solo stumped me was to find and analyze your cover, so thanks!
Thanks. Yes, it is a Hipshot and I probably would not own one of these basses without putting on some sort of replacement bridge as the stock Ric bridges are really tough to adjust. The Hipshot is cool because it's a direct replacement and doesn't require any alterations to the bass. Even the string spacing is adjustable which is also a plus.
@genmed42 Thank you very much. I play for my own enjoyment at this point. In the past, I played a bit of everything in cover bands but progressive rock has always been my favorite thing to play.
@chums122 Thank you for the compliment and well wishes. Hopefully the cancer won't come back but I'm being closely monitored and will know pretty much right away if it does. Most of the masks are from Death Studios.
Great Bass Guitar and Cover...one of my favs. Whenever the solo section comes up...you know when all 3 of them are soloing at the same time, I have to always tell myself ahead of time, now just listen to Alex, Geddy, or Neal throught the whole solo..but I can't the engineer did a masterful job of mixing. It's hard to believe Geddy made up so many killer killer Bass lines.
@Philosopher131 I tend to set my necks very straight with low action so if the neck loosens up even a bit it becomes nearly unplayable. On any MusicMan basses I've had, I'd rarely have to adjust the necks and when I did, they were simple to adjust and very responsive. The jazz bass is my favorite at this time.
Thanks for the insightful comment. Bass might be one of the easier instruments to "fake it" (for lack of a better term) on but, if you delve into it, you find, as you have, it has it's own subtleties to master. I've never felt the urge to play another instrument myself, the solitary and understated nature of the bass has always suited me well. Thanks again.
This was incredible..!! You play things I’ve never been able to play before.. You make it look so easy. LOL. That what makes a great player! Love all your videos ..!! Have a fantastic night sir..!!
My stars ...I'll say one thing ... you don't post anything until you feel sure that you've absolutely nailed it ... and the pieces you select are incredibly complex ... just stunning ....
You are right, even the simpler songs, I rehearse to the point of not having to think about what I'm playing. If I start thinking, either about what I just played or about what I'm about to play, I start making mistakes. Thanks.
@Zeon707 Thanks. Like I said to "Fearof the dard987" below, "There are six sections or cycles to the solo - just take them one at a time until you're able to string them together." If you need a hand with it just ask.
Thanks. I'm plugged straight into a Fender SP-10 guitar amp which is miked with a small desktop microphone. The microphone picks up bit the bass and the music.
@Kumagoro314 Thanks for the generous compliment. A lot of his sound comes from the way he strikes the strings. I'd call it some combination of a whack and a pluck.
@mrxxx Sure. The bass under the guitar solo is one of his finer moments. The hardest thing about La Villa is the bass solo. YYZ is probably his masterpiece from a technical standpoint. Honestly, I wouldn't consider "any" RUSH songs easy but some of the songs I started out on were off the "All The World's A Stage" album - Bastille Day, Fly By Night, Lakeside Park, Something For Nothing...
My bridge is a replacement Hipshot bridge. The pick-up surround in this video is from "Pickguardian", just google them. I've since replaced that with something from "pickofthericks", search their site for "treble pick up bezel". If you took the cover off of your ric you should still have put the whole "surround" back in. That's what holds the pick up in right?
Thanks, it's really low-tech, just a small microphone in between a little practice amp and my computer speakers. I've seen some videos where the people plug into their soundcard or something but that's beyond me. Ricks are cool.
@VinnWi I play fairly hard (though not nearly as hard as I used too) but have the bass set up with light strings, the action low and the neck fairly straight to get the most "clack and grind" as I can from it without killing myself.
@ak47dragunov You're right. I refer to them as triplets and I'd have to sit down with my guitar and analyze the process myself because it's just second nature at this point. It's almost as if you're only working to get the first two notes out then gravity takes care of the third (just by your finger dropping to the string below or above it) if you know what I mean. I'll try and reply again once I can communicate it better to you. Thank you.
@Pauliewanna Thanks for recounting the story. I wonder if they realize the impact they've had on some people's lives. I'm sure they hear it all the time and might make for some awkward moments. Was the food good?
@RushBass1974 Thanks. I describe in detail how I record in the left hand side of my channel. Going direct seems like it would be the best way to go about it but that's beyond me at this point.
This is truly amazing. To be as talented as this.... it blows my mind. I can play all of Freewill on bass, all except for the solo. It just bugs me! My hands, especially fingers, start to feel so sore and tiring, and I just end up having to stop! To have talent this incredible is a very lucky thing.
@wnils From what I heard of your playing there's nothing that would hold you back. If you can do the triplets you can play any RUSH song. Except that flamenco thing he started doing from Counterparts forward, I've never messed with that technique myself. I'm glad to see he's moving away from it somewhat. God, I am a GEDDY GEEK!
@kickerpenis That's awesome you got to see them. How many people were at the show do you think? You guys have big audiences over there. I still have to check out your "Day Of The Eagle" video, it's on my to-do list. I thought Frank Marino might be right up your alley. Take care.
I have a 5 string MusicMan that I've played on a few videos. It used to be my main bass when gigging and recording but, I always used the low B sparingly. I prefer to play 4 strings.
@johnnydrinkalot You're exactly right about the ESL inspired part. I loved the sound of his bass on that album. Thanks a lot for watching and commenting, I appreciate it.
@jerrythepotato1919 Thank you very much. I'm glad you like the way I play but any "talent" I may possess is the result of a lot of practice - I can honestly say that I have no real "natural" ability, just patience and persistence. Just keep playing and each time you play a difficult song, go for as long as you can and then push yourself a couple a couple of extra notes. Eventually you'll build strength and stamina and you'll be off and running.
@disemotoSHADOW Your english is good. I am a total amateur who has been playing a long time - that's all. The model of my bass is a Rickenbacker Model 4003. I don't know any Iron Maiden although Steve Harris is a very good bass player. Thank you.
AMAZING! Geddy is truly superhuman to write these bass lines, then play them while singing and playing the Moog foot pedals! I've bought and sold 4 Ric 4003s over the years and your videos have me on the cusp of getting another one! Perfect tone!
chrisrush2112 I would get rid of my Ric in a minute if I wasn't sure I'd be wanting another one in a few months. I find it to be a not very versatile instrument - sounds great for certain things and just awful for others.
Thanks. In the info section on my channel I give a brief description of what equipment I use and how I go about recording. Read that and if you have any other questions I'd be happy to answer them.
I can't add any other superlative other than what's already been communicated here. I'm trying to pick apart the solo right now, and your demonstration here gave me some ideas. Thanks for the vid and masterful playing as usual! Aloha, Dave
@FearOfTheDark987 Live, it's fast and loose so personally, I prefer the studio version because it's a bit tighter. It might also have to do with the fact that it took so long to get the studio version down that I just didn't have the heart to learn a nearly completely different live version. Don't sell yourself short - with time, practice and patience anything can be accomplished. There are six sections or cycles to the solo - just take one at a time until you're able to string them together
Professor, I can't understand how your shirt sleeves are still intact in this video ... because that was some major musical muscle getting flexed there. "Impressed" is not the word. "Astounding" is more apropos. I'm running out of superlatives, but this cat is just wicked.
That damn solo gets me every time, on both the bass and guitar fronts
And on the drums, Neil's on fire during the solo
I have watched both your Fender and Rickenbacker videos for this song. Geddy would be flattered.
You are truly an inspiration for anyone wishing to play bass guitar. I watch your videos and catch myself smiling. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us.
John Galt Thank you, that was very nice of you to say.

TJH3113 what bass is better fender or rickenbacker ?
Smiling, smooth. This bass line so so fun to play. From funky to precision to grooving, the change ups are... RUSH.🤗
Every time I want to learn a new rush song, the first thing I'll do is pull up a video of you covering it. You have actually taught me more rush songs than sheet music has. For that, I thank you. Excellent covers. Keep up the great work.
+The Shape Thanks a lot.
My FOREARMS are sore just WATCHING this...bravo!
WoW! just WoW! we are not worthy to breathe the same air as you and Geddy! Stellar job on my favorite bass part. You sooo rock!
Whenever I see something like this that enhances just how much is going on with the individual instruments it makes me appreciate the artist more!
Excellent job!
Man, now Imagine playing this song on bass and signing at the same time...Geddy is a beast! Phenomenal cover man!
You're just smiling and effortless and whatnot and I'm over here picking up my jaw in incredulity. FANTASTIC job, sir.

i'm so excited. i'm going to my first rush concert in a few weeks. its going to be amazing.

I've listened to most of your rush bass covers, gotta say that I love them all, keep up the good work!
@vineyardedge Yes, I really appreciate all the positive feedback. Thank you kindly.
That Rick sounds sublime

@enahcs
Thank you. Perhaps I will do a breakdown of the solo part in the near future. Thanks for the suggestion. Glad you got Limelight down.
Thanks. I'm self taught, play be ear and learned most of these songs when they came out.
@riskydiablo Part Two - My first bass was an awful medium scale Cameo bass. My mother bought it for me from a record store that sold instruments and offered lessons as well.
2nd - medium scale Fender MusicMaster - that was "big time" for me.

If I close my eyes, I hear Geddy! Beyond impressive cover of one of the 5 best Rush songs.
Thanks Mathew, I'm glad you liked it! I did another version, after this one, and the sound quality is a little better.
@bennlolzzz
Everything full up and both pickups selected. Congratulations.

Thanks a lot.
Awesome cover,that has to be one of the most difficult Rush songs to cover. Great playing and awesome tone again! Thank you!
Jeesh! Those Ric's sure have a sound all their own! Awesome playing, great cover!
Thanks.
Great tone in all your covers! Awesome to listen to.
Thanks for uploading all the videos. You really blow people's faces off with your bass. I always enjoys watching the Rush vids. Thanks again!
Thanks for checking them out.
@riskydiablo Thank you and don't get discouraged. I've been playing for over thirty years and have a lot of time invested in these songs.
@VinnWi
Thank you very much. I'm not sure what you mean by "pinch" but I do only play pizzicato or finger-style.
You are literally the coolest person ever.
You need to get out more.
@Zeon707
Thanks. Like I said to "Fearof the dard987" below, "There are six sections or cycles to the solo - just take them one at a time until you're able to string them together."

best version on youtube!.Clear and accurate...and with feel and enjoyment.cheers
Your videos are great, I just picked up the bass recently and they are a great help, thanks.
@mrxxx
Sure. The bass under the guitar solo is one of his finer moments. The hardest thing about La Villa is the bass solo. YYZ is probably his masterpiece from a technical standpoint.

@TJH3113
Way nice job. I've been playing Rush songs for years. You do a great job on everything I've seen/heard. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome! Flawless and you made it look easy, and I am a novice, and know all Geddy Lee is not easy! Great Job!
+Rick W Thanks.
Simply AMAZING! I was smiling and shaking my head up and down the whole while! Please do 'The Big Money' when the spirit moves you!
@BassSlappingLZ
Thanks. I've been playing it since it came out so I've had a bit of practice at it.
@VinnWi
I play fairly hard (though not nearly as hard as I used too) but have the bass set up with light strings, the action low and the neck fairly straight to get the most "clack and grind" as I can from it without killing myself.
Thank you.
This is one fun song to jam to... Geddy has some PHAT chops...You did a good Job and the Ric, sounded sweet.
@YbborUberAlles
Thank you for watching and commenting. I'm really happy that you find them useful.
@Pauliewanna Thanks for recounting the story. I wonder if they realize the impact they've had on some people's lives. I'm sure they hear it all the time and might make for some awkward moments. Was the food good?
WOW! For once in my life, I am speechless!! I have the exact same RiC and wish i could handle it like that!! BRAVO!!!!
Outstanding!
Miguel Aquino Thanks.

Holycrap dude!
Nice Bass and nice cover!
Congrats from Brazil!
Well played, good sir. I am currently working on this one, and it's kickin my ass with all the pattern changes, etc... You executed it flawlessly.
Thanks. I think it would make a great summertime project.
@kickerpenis
That's awesome you got to see them.
Well done! The solo section was great. And a nice Rick too!
@kawika5150
Thanks. Just take the solo part one cycle at a time (I think there are six) and get them to the point where you can string them together.
I'm really impressed. Shocked. Thanks for your video.
Thank you.
@johnnydrinkalot
You're exactly right about the ESL inspired part. I loved the sound of his bass on that album. Thanks a lot for watching and commenting, I appreciate it.
My God, what a true musician! Thank you!
Thanks.

I covered "Big Money" a while back.
hell yeah!! nice bass solo btw, Geddy would be proud :D
@disemotoSHADOW Your english is good. I am a total amateur who has been playing a long time - that's all. The model of my bass is a Rickenbacker Model 4003. I don't know any Iron Maiden although Steve Harris is a very good bass player. Thank you.
That solo section always kicks my ass... you did way better than I can haha
@jimmyjohnsman1
I never got into playing fretless. I owned one once and it never got much use. Good luck with yours.
AMAZING! Geddy is truly superhuman to write these bass lines, then play them while singing and playing the Moog foot pedals! I've bought and sold 4 Ric 4003s over the years and your videos have me on the cusp of getting another one! Perfect tone!

and a good performance too!
@Jalreal
I remember it being quite a challenge when learning it myself.
Thanks. In the info section on my channel I give a brief description of what equipment I use and how I go about recording. Read that and if you have any other questions I'd be happy to answer them.
Love this. Great to watch and listen to.
Thanks a lot.
Great cover! And that Ricky is beautiful
I can't add any other superlative other than what's already been communicated here. I'm trying to pick apart the solo right now, and your demonstration here gave me some ideas. Thanks for the vid and masterful playing as usual!
Aloha,

amazing! i wish i could play like u one day maybe.. but man i think u did this MORE than justice!

There are six sections or cycles to the solo - just take one at a time until you're able to string them together
@Niqcko1
I use my forefinger (index) and middle fingers. Though sometime I'll just use my forefinger. But never my ring finger.
Thanks for the kind words. I have done Lock and Key if you haven't found it already.
Excellent! Very fluid, u are all over it!
Professor, I can't understand how your shirt sleeves are still intact in this video ... because that was some major musical muscle getting flexed there. "Impressed" is not the word. "Astounding" is more apropos.
I'm running out of superlatives, but this cat is just wicked.
Oh please.
Thanks a lot.
Should I ever get around to any tutorial stuff I'll be sure to do the solo section in this one.
Think you could handle "The Big Money"?
wowwww, que bien tocado, eres geddy lee.....maestro
@ColdBlooded97
Thanks. I learned to play by ear - lust listening closely and trying to repeat what I heard.
