  • BMW R1200GS got an update for 2017. It’s not completely new, but it comes with some design and electronics tweaks. And a smoother transmission.
    We took both the old and the new R1200GS versions for a ride to see what’s new. It wasn’t the best day to make a review, but we had fun. We equipped both bike with off-road tires: 2017 R1200GS had the optional Continental TKC 80, while the 2015 R1200GS was equipped with Heidenau K60 Scout.

    I bought the 2017 GS, but the gearbox feels very much the same. It is not true that it doesn't do the CLUNK going into first gear. It still actually does that.

    • @DriveMagRiders
      @DriveMagRiders  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's strange. I also discussed the gearbox thing with a friend of mine today, who just bought a new R1200GS. He's in the motorcycle tourism business and he owned many R1200GS. He said that the 2017 gearbox is completely different.

      It's hard for me to compare the transmission as the 2017 is my first GS, but the gearbox is loud and very tractor-like still. Sometimes there is a quiet shift into 1st, other times it does that same clunk and jolt that I've heard on older GS's. Going up from 1st is quiet and smooth.

      We're not sure about your unit, but we think that it should be very smooth compared to a 2013-2016 one. Anyway, enjoy it!

      I agree, I road tested the Rallye in France and the gearbox was even worse, can feel the cogs from second to third..

    it seems also that BMW is thinking in adding extra horse power in the future GS models, this is the rumor right now in order to compete against KTM and Ducati which wouldn't be bad. I got it from several BMW dealers. Maybe not necessary but enjoyable. I had had a K1300R before my GSA and it was a blast, imagine 160HP with 140Nm with shaft drive...a dream

      MrPaulo1400 Salutari. We hope so. Yeah, you don't need more power, but... :)

    • @John-td2rz
      @John-td2rz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think 125HP is more than enough power. The torque is quite powerful on the GS. I had a BMW K1300S last year, more top end power offcoarse, but the GS allows you to drive compfortably and enjoyable on nice country roads and passes. For me the GS is the bike to own.

    I bought a 2017 GS and it has been a frustrating experience. My bike has some kind of an alignment issue and I can't seem to figure out what it is. To hold a straight line at highway speeds, the bike leans to the left. When completely upright, it starts to veer to the right. The torque effect from the engine makes it lean left even more. Worse yet, the BMW service people say they can't feel it and say "They all do that". I've been on other GS and they do NOT all do that. This could end up being the most expensive mistake I ever made.

      Alexis Robles I would look at the rear and front wheel alignment. If one wheel is out of alignment it will cause this.

    Hey guys thanks for the vid, I cant decide between owning the GSA over the Rallye, could you tell me what is the difference between the two?
    Thanks.

    • @DriveMagRiders
      @DriveMagRiders  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, you're talking about the GS Adventure (30 l fuel tank) vs. GS Rallye (the one in the video)? If that's your dillemma, I'd say it depends on your height and needs. The GSA is more expensive, comes with better wind protection, it's heavier, and it offers huge range from that tank. The GS is lighter, so it s better suited for enduro, but no so good on touring as the gsa. Cristian

      DriveMag Riders thanks for the feedback, I'm on my tip toes with the GSA and I will do a fair amount of highway till I get to the dirt. I think I'll choose the beast, GSA.

    Well... Put an owner of a 2015 GS and a BMW-riding-instructor in a video to do a review of the new GS. What might be the outcome? Sorry guys, but it's obvious that this review is biased. I like the GS, I own a 2016 GSA myself, but this video is pretty useless.

    • @DriveMagRiders
      @DriveMagRiders  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How could it be biased? It would be biased if talking about a BMW vs. other brand comparison. Otherwise, it s the same thing

    • @BFD15i
      @BFD15i 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. It's biased because obviously the both of you are somewhat 'emotionally bound' to BMW / the GS. That means that you will most likely be less objective when it comes to finding flaws of the GS. Maybe I am wrong, and the two of you were completely objective. In my experience, however, that's usually not the case when an owner of the product and an employee of the manufacturer are talking about the product.
