Don’t get me wrong I love the videos when you go out to sea for crab fishing and saltwater fish....but something about freshwater catch and cook videos hit different.
Mike Ramirez so true. The ocean vids are necessary though, just to change it up
Its the scenery and the wilderness that gives off a different vibe..
I feel the exact opposite...but to each their own right ? only reason im subbed is for the saltwater vids, and the freshwater is just a nice switchup bonus.
Trueee that’s why I love ace videos too
Prefer river ones lol
Just imagine being a fish, getting caught and hearing him say: ''wow this is a keeper!''
😭😭🤣RIP
*distorted tik tok filter comes on the fishes face*
😭 never laughed harder
Lol
lmao
Matt, you don't even understand how excited I get when I get off work, worked a 50 hour week, weekend about to start, crack open a beer, open TH-cam and hope one of my favorite content creators posted, then I see this video. Let's go.
I feel you in this one! Especially after his injury man cheers 🍻 !
Beer BAD!
George Kirkpatrick your comment BAD!
That green “moss” you got out the tree is called old mans beard. That stuff lights easily if it’s dry. Also you might want to make some char cloth to bring next time. Old jeans cut into 1 inch squares, put in a altoids tin with one hole, set it on a bbq or fire and let it smoke. 5 mins should do. It will leave you with black cloth that takes spark very easily. Char cloth in a bundle of old mans beard will get you a fire, just need to blow the smolder into a flame. Hope this helps. Awesome video.
He also needs to shave the flint on what ever is and the strike the flint dry the pine needles will be good but just randomly sparking the flint and steel is not gunna start a fire
Rember anything green is not dry
Great tip
I came back to rewatch. You seemed exceptionally energized and excited in this one which makes me happy. I'm currently living in what feels like a warzone in NYC. Watching your videos reminds me there are still parts of the country where peace truly does exist. Your videos are like therapy and an escape from the chaos. I envy your life, but I'm also inspired. Stay safe out there, buddy! ❤
You asked what we wanted in one of your last videos and I commented more freshwater camp/cook trout trips and here it is!!
Same!!!
FOR YOUR FIRE: too many comments for me to check all to see if someone already suggested this (so, sorry if it’s a repeat!): very SLOWLY and firmly scrape your ferro rod over your tinder, so that you get flecks & flakes from the rod onto your tinder pile. Then, when you scrape the rod quickly and get sparks, those fragments will catch very easily, and support your kindling catching more quickly. I LOVE your vids, admire your diverse fishing skills, enjoy your easygoing nature & good humor, I’m delighted by your adventurous spirit & yummy campfire cooking skills, AND I think you are COMPLETELY adorable to boot! (Not being creepy- I’m old enough to be your young grandma or old aunt LOL!) Gonna try to nab one of your gorgeous new shirts for my hubby who loves fishing. Thanks for all you share with us; stay safe and be blessed! 💐💐💐
Thank you and great advice!
@@FishermansLife Another thing about the fire. i think I saw dried grass in your pile of kindling u were trying to ignite with the ferro rod. if u roll the bundle between your hands, it breaks up the fibres making them easier to ignite. Also make longer, more shallow cuts in the feather stick u were trying to make. love watching your videos
Scratch magnesium and mound a pile with your Kindle. That should also help catch the sparks
Also heads up most of CA has prohibited wood fires, maybe edit with a "date" before 5/28
What this nice lady said, also, when you strike your flint, carve at it like you would do to sharpen a stick, so small chunks of burning flint land in the tinder.
Man, ur videos never bore me. I rather prefer these longer videos than the short 20 minute ones. I love your content and glad to hear your Achilles tendon is healing well. Praying that it heals quick, so u can really get out there and catch some biggens! Much love from Mississippi
''8 minutes without a bite'' ... meanwhile I'm on the lake waiting 4 hours for a bite.
GFkilla17 lmao. Same
Lmfao even the damn sea
Oh poor you 🤣🤣🤣

Ya 😞
I PROMISE you, you never are boring!! Your trout videos/camp outs are THE best!! This is what I live for!! Thank you for taking us along. It can’t be easy.
I have a story about mountain people. One day I was fishing a small creek that was in the middle of nowhere, about 20 miles from the nearest town. I had hiked up the creek about a mile trying to find better spots. The whole time I had a weird feeling like I was being watched, but I kept going. I was very on edge though, every time a twig that snapped, every time a rock budged I would get sketched out. I had ended up at this deep hole where another creek ran into the one I was already fishing. The side of the creek across from me had no shore, and there was a very steep cliff face that went up about 150 feet then it flattened out at the top. About my fifth cast in that hole I was just looking around and noticed rocks crumbling down from the cliff, I glanced where they were falling from and there was a older man wearing nothing but shorts attempting to climb down the cliff. He was looking back at me periodically while making his way down the cliff. I was very spooked by this and I began making my way towards where I parked. As I was leaving he started climbing down faster and staring at me. I wasn’t super worried because he was on the other side of a very fast and deep creek. But it was still very scary. I kept a steady pace towards where I had parked and I was continuing to look back at him. He finished the climb by now and he has started to walk along the creek in the same direction as me, but on the other side. He just stared at me the whole walk back and it was very unsettling. I eventually got the trailhead to get back up to my car and he just stared at me as I left. I never went to that spot again alone.
Woah, that gave me chills...
Sound like he was hungry
That's why u take a gun....
bboy1481 I’m not old enough to
bboy1481 not all of us are old enough to have pistols and small guns like that until 21 in SC but i would at least carry my rifle
Yessss, another trout catch camp and cook video up in the mountains. Don’t get much better then that. Sooo stoked
Gotta be one of my favourites from Fisherman’s Life
Sure doesn’t
Definitely the best ones 12/10
You're very inspiring man. Growing up, my dad had been a master fisherman. Him and my brother were the main fishermen, while I kinda slunked away in the background into my own interests. I never caught the bug until recently when I went out to get some spot prawns with a friend. I noticed you also made a video about that! Aren't they the greatest? Anywho, he passed away a few years back in an unfortunate boating accident while setting out to fish for steelhead. I am very happy to see you wear a life jacket while you're out there. I like to think my father is living through me now and his interests are flowing through and helped me find your channel. I dunno if this message is strange to you or not but what I'm trying to say is in the wake of everything, your channel has put my soul at ease whenever I watch it and it helps me connect with my father as much as possible now. Thank you.
I’m sorry about your loss. It’s great that you have found this channel. I agree. Life jackets are always a good thing to have on board
Thanks for sharing that brother
Time to share this "new found" passion with your brother!
My dad's told me this story a couple of times: In the mid 2000's my dad and his college buddy (Tony) would take week long windsurfing trips mostly around the gorge, and goldendale area in WA. They had been doing similar trips annually since the 80s. No better camping then in the back of your truck on a for-service road.. They had an early day on the water and wanted to go to a spot that got a good view of Mt Hood to camp. After many many miles down a for-service road they found a gate cut down like many forest service roads have due to dirt bikers etc.. and decided to continue climbing elevation. They stumbled across a group of obvious mountain men, who waved my dad's truck down (this is 20 miles up a hardly managed road, no other vehicles in sight). The mountain men said "if you want to continue you have to forfeit your cellphones, and any communication to be one with the wild." My dad just responded "hey were just looking for a place with a good view, were not going to be here long." They didnt give up their communication and the mountain men told them to go another mile or so down the gravel road then follow the first trail to the right and you'll have a great view. They decided to set up camp there, made a fire and had some beers. It was my dad's truck so he slept in the back and Tony just had a tarp where he would literally just sleep in the ditch with the tarp rolled around him. My dad gave him the machete because my dad had the truck. Around 12:00pm bongos rolled in the distance. They thought nothing of it, just people in the woods having a good time so they went to bed.. My dad woke up around 2 to Tony trying to get in his truck with the Machete saying "theres something out there". They both just sat in the bed and waited. They didnt sleep at all.. when it got light out, they searched around and found their remaining beers were stolen. When driving back down the for-service road someone had put a log over the roadway, which was probably placed there in the night so if they tried to leave they'd have to stop their truck and move it. Very eerie.. he doesnt do that trip as much due to him getting older but still loves camping. I got my own truck now, going out fishing and camping in my truck bed. Maybe I'll ask him where that specific trial is and see if I can see that view 👀
Interesting, beer bongos. Mountainmen couldn't resist beer, despite wanting to be one with nature!
@Robert Ratskywatsky It does sound kind of silly. Why wouldn't the friend just crash in the truck as well?
update?
Mountain men tried to rob them?
Crazy Story
Mountain men or hippies? 🤔
I like how he walks past cameras in his intro like we don't know he runs back to get it later
Wait what??? He doesn’t just leave them there?
Stupid comment = stupid response
Come up with some better shit
Ik he goes and gets it but I like that he does it
Benji Parsons lmao
Dude he's actually being creative and that's a good thing, he also probably has to edit the video even more but that's ok because he delivers good videos.
I was thinking the samething
Isn’t it the saddest thing when a fisherman’s life video ends
Shave off some of the flint onto the kindling first. Once you do that, the first strike will help light all the shavings and it'll be easier to light
I love how he is beginner friendly but also offers tips for the pros.
My favorite part was where he hooked himself on purpose to show us how bad it is
@@getchasome6230 hahahhaa inside job
He is beginner friendly but if you’re a Sierra pro, you already know almost nobody would ever use an indicator and a drowned ant below in the sierras. There are a lot of higher hit rate approaches

I knew a man who lived off of the highway in NY. He used to catch squirrels with a rat trap and dollar peanut butter, he lived that way for 5 years in the woods just beyond the highway
Only 5 years?, he must've got tired of squirrels.
ko ko you all of that taste pretty good
My uncle does the whole wild man thing, comes into town every other month when he needs something or wants to visit. Me and my brothers used to spend summers at his hut helping out and learning how to survive if we get hurt, I didn't appreciate it nearly as much as a kid as I do now.
That would be awesome! I’m sure as a kid I would’ve been apprehensive to learn too, but that’s the best time to learn!
This is called TH-cam and ur using WiFi rn. Welcome to society, no need to thank me 🙌🙌🙌

So happy you're back to trout fish, cook, and camping. Those have always been my favorite. The extra long video was awesome, keep up the amazing work. By far my favorite content creator!
Appreciate how careful he is handling them for the most part, much appreciated!
Seeing your struggle to cast far when using a streamer, I wanted to let you know that LESS weight on the fly let's you cast farther. That's the whole point about the weighted fly line and tapered leader. Love your fly fishing adventures, tight lines!

You're supposed to spray the bear mace at a diagonal angle pointing at the ground in front of you so the cloud is at the charging bear/cougar's eye level.
your supposed to carry a FIREARM
You’re suppose to throw that one fat liberal friend of your as bait.
@@danthedewman1
Studies show that firearms are really impotent in an incident (that is almost always by accident as a bear has no interest in humans). Especially there is a risk you don't take rules seriously enough, in how to make your ways in bear territory, simply because of the safety you feel carrying a gun, therfore provocating a situation that would otherwise maybe not even happened.
@@Spasstiful yeah..lol
You should get a dog and take him with you. Like a wolf dog or German Shepherd to protect you in the woods and forests. The best thing in the woods or camping besides a gun is a strong and loyal dog, trust me!
You're NEVER boring when you're fishing in Nor Cal's fresh water streams and rivers. Please do more of these!! The scenery is beyond perfection!
Being a novice fisher myself watching your content Matt makes me more confident and you teach a lot of techniques I cannot wait to try out fly fishing keep it up man from Dublin Ireland
I just bought a hat and sweatshirt from you and when it got here I was super excited. I put it on and it was even better then I expected. I just wanted to say good job and keep it up. I’ve been a fan for a while now and you are my favorite.

Love your optimism and trash talking to the fish when you are fishing. I suspect that the majority of us don't get bored when watching you fish. Great video, Matts and thank you for sharing.
Finally, a new trout vid! Heat the pan up, the butter is on its way!
Rybak Marrick lol 😂
butter is best
he squeezed the butter in lol
Not so much mountain people, but there are people down in SoCal that live on the East fork of the San Gabriel River prospecting for gold. Pretty interesting group of people.
Great video as always. I really enjoyed it.
Wow brought back some memories when I lived in Cali, I went to a elementary school is Azusa in the early 80s. A group of kids went to my school that lived in the canyon. 'Canyon Kids' we use to call them.
I seen hobos there
What a beautiful day to watch you enjoy fishing on the water. Here in Baltimore to much has been going on so I’ll reminisce as I savor your relaxed happiness.
"I am gonna go through the mouth or.... is this the asshole?? I dunno... I mean the butt, sorry" I will forever love this channel
“Am I boring you with all this fishing” I love this man, loves to make content, loves what he does, keep up the amazing work
Love the vids, they're always calming to watch when im stress from working.
You should record in 4k, it would be freaking sick.
The fact that u actually cursing now I can now watch in peace 🙂
Matts, this was honestly one of the best videos you've ever made. Still waiting for snow to melt to do that up here in WA 😂
We need videos from you too Leif.

I absolutely love your content! Especially videos like these when you go on camping trips! I also like that you explain your method of fishing and useful tips! Please keep your videos coming! ♥️
Been watching your videos, just to make my Grand Father feel like I am brave enough to fish! Fishing and hunting are like the two big rights of passion and I catch a fish recently!
It would be nice if you had a dog or two to take with you on trips like this. Maybe take a friend's dog. To watch your back !

Hey man I love your program and your sense of humor it's really really sharp a man and that's what I like and watching somebody teaching you how to fish so keep up the good work now thank you
When I first watched these videos in June, I told myself I would get some freshwater fishing gear and head up to the Sierras and fish. Now that I’m geared up and ready, we have the fires raging in Cali. Over 2 million acres burned so far and no end in sight. I love the outdoors, it’s where we go to recharge out batteries. Now, I can only hope there’s enough forests left. This situation is totally f-d up for everyone. Anyhow, wishing all the firefighters and victims all the best.
Find some bark on a dead tree and scape the inside. That “pulp” will catch a spark nicely. Great vid!
On a river like that, I love just fishing top water flies. Ants have been great for casting up stream and let it flow back toward you as you mend the line.
Also, I really prefer Sawyer filters over the lifestraw. The Sawyer will filter many, many more gallons than the Lifestraw and is way more versatile.
Loved this video. Yeah I've hooked myself once to. I had to go to the doctor to take out the hook. But you know what would be great in this video is also show off your tent and sleep pad and sleeping bag in depth also. Thanks fishetmans life

Hey man, i just discovered your channel. Pretty cool stuff !
When you fish with worms, dont pack the splitshots but space them progressively from the lightest to the heaviest. That way the worm will show first before the splitshots and you will be able to tell when a fish bites before he swallows it.
This a really common technique used in France/Switzerland for trout fishing.
Went fishing in the high sierra this weekend, I didnt get any natives but the rainbow was good enough. Thanks to you, you got me into fishing and cooking out doors.
Thanks for providing pro tips to my wife and I on how to prepare trout! Seasoned our filets and ready to eat!
I love these videos, these are the ones that sealed it for me back in the day when I first found your channel. I prefer rock and surf fishing above all other types, but there’s something primal and honest about your videos that just tick the satisfactory box - especially these camping vids. As always, awesome stuff!!

Me scrolling down to read stories about mountain people then knowing I'ma get nightmares about them
Why would stories about people that live in the mountains or woods give you nightmares? Seriously, people have become such pussbags it’s pathetic.
@@InDisskyS131 I think it would be disturbing at least. Imagine fishing in a forest nowhere near society and you see a sketchy looking dude just living there. It would all have to do with the situation.
@@elfuentes9272 A “sketchy” looking dude, like what? You mean some guy with blood covered clothes and a chainsaw covered in bone shards and flesh from all the people he kills in the middle of nowhere, or do you mean a guy with maybe scraggy hair, possibly a beard and a calm demeanor due to living among nature?
@@InDisskyS131 I think el fuentes is referring to the antisocial or criminal personality. The sociopath or serial killer that may be living secluded somewhere in the wilderness ready to murder any unlucky trespassers.
Frrrrr
Your videos are like the best when I feel like watching fishing.
Happy to see you are healed up and back in the mountains again!
It has been recommended to me by rangers to not use bear spray when dealing with black bears. According to them, the bear will likely become more aggressive. Sometimes they let you know when you’re picking up a wilderness permit.
That’s why you keep a gun on you when you’re out like that
I've never seen someone carrying bear spray in the Sierra. I've encountered more than a few bears and they can always be driven off fairly easily.
The key is keeping a clean camp and most areas require bear proof containers for food. Guns, while being way overkill for black bears are illegal in most places of the Sierra. If bears scare you that much, stay home!
I pack dryer lint in a t.p. roll. Great when no dry fire starter.
Just check your pockets and if needed, you can scrape your knife over your pants and create lint.
Next time head up and away from the river to find tinder. Hard to realize in the moment, but that river vapor and cold air sump causes a lot of condensation. Learn to make feather sticks. Learn to sniff out fat wood that is heavily pine sap infused (turpentine smell). And lastly with that, your cheek is surprisingly a good indicator of moisture. You can feel how cold it is and that relates to dampness. That moss was too green. It's ok if it's hanging off branches and much more wind blown sometimes, but still difficult. Splitting wood and getting to the core of it and then feather sticking it out is best in my experience.
an easy method for kindling i use incase im not able to find anything suitable around is to take my knife and run it back and forth on a spot of clothing keeping it perpendicular to the fabric, preferably on my jeans, do it in a few spots and youll accumulate a good bunch of fluffy material that takes to ferro rods quite well. Keep on trekin and tight lines !
So glad to see another video like this. After being inspired by a few of your videos on solo camping/trout fishing, I started fishing again for the first time since I was in high school . I've had a blast in the last year and half! Thanks for the awesome content!
I heard stories about people who escaped from a mental institution many years ago near me and have lived in the woods ever since. I went down the path where they’ve been spotted and it was super creepy and my friends and I felt like we were being followed. That’s when we went back to the car and flashed the lights, I saw something run away. It could’ve been an animal but who knows🤷🏻♀️

"Do not toss the skin, please do not toss the skin." All your seasoning and flavors are caked onto the skin as it forms a crisp.
The reason why you have been fowl hooking some of the trout is because they wanted the leading fly (black ant) but the trailing fly was to close to the leading fly resulting in Fowl hookups so extend your trailing fly leader and that should solve your problem

When I was in the Eastern Sierra's last summer the ranger gave me a pamphlet that said if the trout swallow your hook to not disgorge it but just cut the line as far down as you can, and the hook with rust and dissolve and the fish will be fine. I thought that was odd, but curious if anyone knows if that's true.
Jordan Abbott absolutely true. Trout unlimited and many other organizations actually push for people to do this verses trying to dig the hook out.

Ive watched your videos for years. I LOVE FISHERMAN'S LIFE! I'd love to bring you fishing out here in Oregon one of these days
My man where's the *AVOCADO*
For bears just bring the ol' 44magnum at least that's what I would do reading a lot of the comments just rienforces my decision to carry. Crazy people scare me more than animals.
I grew up in Lacomb Oregon. It’s the middle of no where in the valley. I would go camp out and explore in the woods and I would always find man made huts way up in the mountains. Some would be eerie, some not so much. There are definitely mountain people. But they are just people that want away from civilization, they don’t mean any harm.
The creepiest one I ever found had satantic symbols marked on trees all around his camp, which was a teepee like structure made of chopped trees. I came across that place and the camp fire was still burning. I quickly left that scene.
A lot of times people that put that stuff up just want other people to leave them alone. It's more of a scare tactic than an actual occult thing for most people.
Great Video. One of the BEST !
OK. WE NEED TO SEE ONE MILLION SUBS!!!!!!!!!
LETS GO!!!!!!
I love your solo camping/hiking catch and cook for trout. Keep it going!!
My buddy and I was out trail riding one day about 7 years ago and came across a guy that said he lived in the woods for about 5 year with his dog. Dont know how true it was but it was kinda weird when he came out of nowhere and started talking to us. He was wearing some old army drab jacket and looked like he hasn't had a proper shower for some time. Gave him our snacks and jerky we had and haven't seen him since
When he said he needed to find out if the bear spray worked I thought he was gonna spray it in his eyes 🤣
Quote of the day: "man im fighting these tiny fish like they're monsters." 😂😂
If you wanted to make using the flint easier, Instead of pushing sparks with the scraper, hold it steady and pull the flint away, that way the tinder isn't pushed away as the sparks are trying to land on it! Love your videos and have watched for years now, keep it up, and tight lines! ❤️🎣
