flyfishing is the most worthy pursuit. when it all come together it is just amazing. most important is to not try to cast too far at first and to control your line after it hits the water. a lot of these norcal streams and rivers can be fished well with twenty feet of line out and high sticking it. add fly tying a little down the road and your set for life man. i'm a self taught fly fisher and welder homes.
Steve Stringham I agree, I can remember the first fish I ever caught on the fly. It was a tiny little brook like five or six inches. My excitement was overwhelming because I saw it come out of a little hole in the tiny creek and take my elk hair caddis. I was hooked from that moment. I've always been intimidated about tying my own flies, but I definitely will try to catch a fish this year with a fly that I tie. Thanks for the tips my welder brother hahaha

Pointing ahead is very difficult as you try and watch your step and watch the rod tips. Give it a try, you will be amazed. I know I was. Cheers from B.C.
Hey man, I'm a guide from Maine, I've been watching your videos for awhile and I've been watching your evolution into a flyfisherman, your cast looks awesome, you're doing it alright, but you should work on your fish id! There are tons of different color combos just for the rainbow trout alone, from Frye, to Adult they always change. And work on your fly collection! Flyfishing isn't just dry fly and nymph fishing! There are tons of options, of all types streamers are my favorite, they imitate baitfish, crawfish, etc, and often times it is the bigger fish that seek them out because they are used to burning the energy to eat a bigger meal. not just eating bugs. Flyfishing is an art, not just a hobby, it takes practice and patience. we throw a ball if we have a 3 fish day, sometimes you can't keep em off your fly, but often times its a struggle. but a fun struggle, practice makes perfect man, I have spent countless hours casting in my backyard or just going out and catching bass and sunfish to get used to the feeling, keep up the work dood!

It doesn’t take me countless hours to catch a fish, I was saying I’ve spent countless hours on my lawn practicing my Cast. Go back to elementary school, figure your grammar out, learn to fly fish, then come back and talk to me.

I’ve been coming back to this video over the years and I still can’t get over what an amazing trip this was for you, and how tasty those fish looked! Beautiful scenery, thank you for this gem ❤
I think it's awesome that you get so many sponsors. No doubt they work because I have never heard of Siskiyou County but now its on my list. I am retired military and my wife only has 5 years until she retires. Once our daughter is on her own we are buying an RV and hitting the road. I already fish and travel a lot. Within the last year I have fished Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee and both the mountains and the coast of South Carolina. In fact I was fishing earlier today with my little girl, we both only got one. I am heading back to Tennessee at the end of March for 10 days. I also have a trip planned for her spring break in April down in Tampa and another trip planned for Oklahoma in June. I want to thank all the states that extend fishing and hunting opportunities to veterans and disabled veterans. I don't want to leave any out but I will list the ones I know. Texas, California, Missouri, Illinois, Washington, all give disabled veterans some fishing benefit regardless of state residency. So, no doubt I will be fishing those waters!!
You did an amazing job. Your fly casting is actually very good. You should be very proud of yourself. I would suggest getting a whole bunch of flies. Atleast 5x what you brought. Lots of dry flies, lots of nymphs, wolly buggers, streamers for big browns, everything. Then just learn a lot more about what food sources the trout eat on. After learning a lot about that, you are going to get good really fast. I can tell that already by just watching you fly cast. If you ever need pointers, drop me a line!
If u were fishing the mccloud, then your first fish was a McCloud River redband. If it was above the falls, congrats...that’s a heritage trout. For dry flies, you should add small size 16 or smaller parachute Adams, royal wulff, blue wing olives and elk hair Caddis to your fly collection. If your going to nymph fast water (indicator or tight line), you need to add some weight to your leader just above the tippet to leader connection to get the fly down to the strike zone.
I've met so many people like that random dude that helped you out. For whatever reason, fishermen seem to love sharing knowledge, gear, or whatever. Truly a great community of people
Hey man that feeling you get with your first on a fly is exhilarating. Now tie your own fly and do the same! Some tips, try high stick nymphing it will help you mend less and have better line control. Also you should have several spoils of tippet progressing in size. I would have fished 4x flouro tippet in that river. Also with your roll cast, make sure you properly load your rod by making a d loop behind you. You’ll get more distance. You can also do a single hand Spey cast for confined areas which is pretty much an advanced roll cast. I’m local to the bay too we can hit it on the fly sometime if you want.
You put one of those on a hook and cast out into a lake...guaranteed fish dinner. Trout love those things. Hook it through the thorax (harder shell part just below the head) and you'll probably even get two or three fish off one bug.
Mend right when the fly hits the water, if you don’t have an indicator then you want to do what is called high sticking, or czech nymphing. Basically you keep your line vertical and follow the fly down stream with your fly rod. I am a self taught fly man. Taught myself by watching youtube almost 12 years ago!! You can do it!!!! Your first big fish on a fly rod is a life changer, you will be addicted. Also that was a baby rainbow that you caught.
great advice Mike -- I learned that trick mending as soon as my fly landed and it has double benefits, sometimes the little flip when you mend stimulates a strike, if not you have your fly mended for the drift!
Hey dude, you are my favorite TH-camr! You may have taken some heat over some of your videos in the past, but good for you that you keep going and doing your own thing. I believe what you do will pay off if it isn't already. Your videos are getting better and better. You also have something the others just don't do and that's the cooking part. I started watching the classics years ago like Bill Dance, and now primarily watch youtube content. Stay safe and keep them coming.
I've been watching for years, don't remember any heat either. I could imagine the tree huggers getting at him for "taking creatures out of thier natural environment" though..and I'm sure gutting them and eating them on screen doesn't help either 🤣 I have a weak stomach myself honestly but hey, this is the circle of life as God intended it. Can't argue with that and Matts just such a stand-up honest and admirable dude 👍
My kids have been wanting to learn how to fish and I came across this video. My small kids have learn a lot and love the scenes of natures in the videos. My favorite part is that I like how you explain like a teacher what you are doing and what fish you are catching. I just want to say thank you cause your videos have taught me and my kids a lot about fishing 🎣 🐟
When your fishing right behind a rock try to do a high stick technique where your rod is high enough in the air to where not much line is on the water so it can’t be caught by current and make it not look natural you will also get better control and be able to set the hook faster.
Fish, about 300 calories, avocado, about 300 calories, lil' bit of butter, about 300 calories! Consistantly making me envious with wonderful films of adventures which I never tire of.
Don't be afraid to pull line out as it goes down stream if you like where its at. Maximizing your dead drift time. Flies with bigger bead heads to get down into those pools and let your nymph bounce along the bottom. You can swim your wet flies too so fishing with a nymph is more forgiving, if your drift is a little off it will still look natural. Mayflies and emerging caddis swim. I like black wooly buggers. pause and let the current straighten your line at the end of your drift. The current will load your rod a little bit for better distance unloading your rod straight upstream. Pull line out every time you will be amazed how far you can deliver it no back casting necessary. You looked good though fly fishing is allot of fun just keep messing around. Your trial and error approach is how its done. Bring Philosophy D next time and send him on a mission to collect and identify whatever insects are in and around the river. Matching the hatch is important and I'm sure he would love that. Take pictures of them and go back to outdoor pro and match them up. You're a natural. Two trout first time on the flies. Keep it up you're on fire!
I just can't stop watching your videos, man. They're so cozy & inspiring and it's really amping me up to one day actually succeed in catching any sort of fish. I recently took up fishing, but the area that i live in is completely empty right now. We have a nice little lake & an okay river (which usually contains trout & salmon during season) but i've been fishing for days without success. One day, maybe i'll strike gold.
Love this video my dude. Amazingly stunning shots, great camera work, awesome fishing and love your personality! Give a shameless plug for fisherman’s life hoodies, you deserve it brother!
Started watching you a month ago and absolutely love discovering all your old videos because I don't have to wait for a new video to come out! You make me feel like I'm there with ya when I'm in the office lol
The big black insect you found under the rock is called a stonefly, theres dozen of patterns for them and are very, VERY, effective. The nymph you said you don't know what is called is a Prince Nymph. Oh and I believe the flies that you were talking about before you found the huge stonefly are caddis larvae, they like to enshroud themselves in the local substate, thats why they look like they have got a wood body. I hope this info does you good, tight lines!
I think it's dragonfly nymph because of size, thick abdomen and big eyes. nature.mdc.mo.gov/sites/default/files/styles/centered_full/public/media/field-guide/Dragonfly_Larva_Nickel_2-22-16.jpg
You should do the Heritage Trout Challenge series! It's a challenge by CA Fish and Wildlife where you catch 6 different forms of CA native trout in their historic waters. I think you're already doing a great job promoting angling and the outdoors. Keep up the good work!
Just stopping by to re-watch some of the oldies, what good stuff, happy to see how the quality of the videos haven't changed a bit. They are great, always have been, and always will be.
The first one that you caught kinda looked like a Kern river trout... which is a species of trout that originated but not specific to the Kern river.. I have caught Kern river trout in the Stanislaus before.
when your walking through bush like that. heres a tip from a canadian bush fisherman. turn the rod around and face it backwards. it doesnt got hung up on that much like if its forward

love the landscape and the fishing, well done
SO COOL OF THE FELLOW FISHERMAN ALSO
thats a dragonfly larvae and if they are aggressive or more active then yes they will bite
You put one of those on a hook and cast out into a lake...guaranteed fish dinner. Trout love those things. Hook it through the thorax (harder shell part just below the head) and you'll probably even get two or three fish off one bug.
Yeah man! that's a Dragon fly.
Yup
its call a benthos generally
Heat!? This man is amazing!
What heat? I've been watching for a while never heard of any drama? I wanna know bro
Hex Pool same people get mad Bc he’s fishing it’s so stupid he’s so sweet
Greatt vid. Do more catch n cook 👊👍u shuld go to an island
I can Get him on San Clemente Island from San Diego! Hit me up !
Raven JJ Johnson thts cool. U shuld let him knw
Ahh yes the islands of Northern California lol

This man is bob ross of fishing
you know you addicted to fishing when you dream about fishing on your fishing trip =)
Fish, about 300 calories, avocado, about 300 calories, lil' bit of butter, about 300 calories!
Consistantly making me envious with wonderful films of adventures which I never tire of.
36 minute video amazing. Thank uu for making ny day
Don't be afraid to pull line out as it goes down stream if you like where its at.
God bless you brother, you rescued my day and made me happy just watching you fishing and cooking. Thanks so much from Bulgaria.
One would think in that sort of water there would be godzilla size trout in it. Beautiful looking spots though!
Weka Digital Media NZ Bula from Fiji! Hope to see one of your new videos up cuzzy! .. Vinaka lol
Thanks bro, got a great one coming soon, stay tuned!
Food is hard to get, the water is cold, they expend energy, it's a Cutthroat trout.
Hey bro, good to see another Kiwi on here!
Oh no those Godzilla size Trout are there the trick is just catching them
Nice to see your using the Sawyer filter but always remember to wipe down the bottle/bag before drinking.

Hypermuscle 6 months later, any luck?
You have that fishermans life that everybody wants
it aint gna be complete without the avocados and butter! :D

Great video Matts!
Awesome fisherman who stopped by and gave some suggestions! Great video.
We call them mudeyes in Australia.
Correct terminology is a damsel nymph
actually i think it's a dobson fly larvae, called a hellgrammite
Kognak yes dragonfly nymph stoneflies are very different
18:33 Do you get to the cloud district very often? Oh what am I saying of course you dont.
King0neEurope legend
You should do the Heritage Trout Challenge series!
It's a challenge by CA Fish and Wildlife where you catch 6 different forms of CA native trout in their historic waters.
I think you're already doing a great job promoting angling and the outdoors. Keep up the good work!
You can eat the tail as a chip, fry it, its delicious, fins also, thats how we do it here in Nicaragua🇳🇮
I’ve been watching his vids for the past year and I still have yet to go fishing ever lol
Been watching all night and came across this today! That is my home! I love mount Shasta!
I like how you improve your camera skills and angles! 👏🏼👏🏼 been watching you for years !
The audio on this video is the greatest thing of man kind
Jim TM especially the sound of the butter sizzling!
Just stopping by to re-watch some of the oldies, what good stuff, happy to see how the quality of the videos haven't changed a bit. They are great, always have been, and always will be.
That bug you found is called a hellgrammite. "Larval dragonfly"
P.S. Trout love Hellgrammites..:)
Gino Sedillo it’s a dragonfly larvae, but not a helgramite, those become dobsonflies as adults
I stand corrected. Thanks for your input.
NEGRO
tonic INC. Relaxxxx kid
The first one that you caught kinda looked like a Kern river trout... which is a species of trout that originated but not specific to the Kern river.. I have caught Kern river trout in the Stanislaus before.
I grew up in this area. I miss it. Glad you enjoyed our little slice of paradise.
