Gould is a fine pianist that played Bach in a very special way, breaking a lot of rules, and giving a new taste of Bach, more contemporary, more accessible. But when you hear this pianist, you can feel a deep feeling of Bach, the essense of his music, the precision is not a virtue in Bach, but the purity of the sound. This is a great interpretation of Sokolov
Grigory Sokolov The Boss??? REALLY=Grigory Sokolov=THE TITAN OF THE PIANO!!! THE GIANT OF THE PIANO!! Grigory Sokolov his Chopin piano concerto no 2! Brahms piano concerto no 2! Mozart piano concerto no 24! Saint-Saens piano concerto no 2! AFTER Grigory Sokolov PLAYED THESE CONCERTOS THEN ALL THE OTHERS PIANISTS ARE REALLY ONLY THE DUST ZEROS!! Only ones not Dust Are Artur Rubinstein=THE GOD! Emil Gilels=THE KING!! WHO IS THE GREATEST? The KING? The GOD? The GIANT? The TITAN? My vote goes to Grigory Sokolov!!
Amazing inetrpretation and performance. Great musician and artist, not only a great pianist. One can feel all the layers, perfection of trills, culminations and surprises. Thanks for uploading.
Master craftsman and master performer. What a labor of love! An aural feast.Thank you, nnamffohsaile, for contributing to the beauty in the world as you did here!
I see a lot of you talking about Sokolov (rightly so, that it is a really good interpretation and performance) however fugue of this piece is one of my favorite Bach moments. It is not the most complicated fugue Bach ever wrote or anything but it is so peculiar and bizarre compared to usual Bach fugues where the descending second theme got introduced (starts around 6.15), these are the lines that one can see a clear path from Bach to second Viennese school.
Yes, BWV 904 is a real jewel among his keyboard compositions. Nothing in the two books of his "Wohltemperierte Klavier" is as well written as this. And we know that almost all what Bach wrote is pure gold.
@Brian Bernstein yes. I've played the piece and was taught to alternate LH 1-2 and RH 1-2. Not that my interpretation can even begin to compare to Sokolov's, of course!
you know theres playing a trill , and theres playing a trill like sokolov . i myself play it with the thumbs of both my hands , but to achieve that kind of clarity i have no idea how
What a treat to hear Bach being performed in the romanticized manner that pianists before Glen Gould performed Bach. Bach wrote works such as these for the harpsichord (there were no concert grands in Bach's time) and such an instrument restricts the emotional range and subtlety that the modern piano can produce but it does have an almost digital precision that the modern piano lacks. Glen Gould made the modern piano sound more like the harpsichord. Personally, with Bach, I prefer the harpsichord.
perhaps rhythmic precision. When Glenn Gould's recordings of the Goldberg Variations appeared in the 1950s, the rhythmic attention was something new. But today many pianists play with good attention to rhythm, and Glenn Gould is not THAT special anymore...
This is the way J.S. Bach would've heard it, including the tempo and ornementation, which respects baroque litterature: th-cam.com/video/NeG_dCsqAvY/w-d-xo.htmlm18s
Grigory Sokolov=THE TITAN OF THE PIANO!! THE GIANT OF THE PIANO!! Brendel was Only 4th place in The Busoni piano competition! Brendel so over-rated pianist! Grigory Sokolov his Chopin piano concerto no 2!! Brahms piano concerto no 2! Mozart piano concerto no 24! Saint-Saens piano concerto no 2! AFTER Grigory Sokolov PLAYED THESE CONCERTOS THEN ALL THE OTHERS PIANISTS ARE REALLY ONLY THE DUST ZEROS!! Maybe These two No dust= Artur Rubinstein=THE GOD! Emil Gilels=THE KING OF ALL PIANISTS!! Several of Sh's 24 preludes and fugues recall or echo Bach's, as if channeling the older composer - but with the difference, in Sh's case, of evoking a Russian folk-song melos..
When will you people stop comparing Sokolov, this most wonderful of pianists, with the self-aggrandizing Glenn Gould, that champion hummer, who could never play anything without loads of affectation? There's something here like the difference between Rembrandt and Picasso.
Sokolov, like so many Russian pianists is a great admirer of Gould. Sokolov and Gould are the two best Bach players I've ever heard. They complement each other brilliantly,
he didn't play it, only another Gould fan. I'm a Gould van too, I think his understanding of the notes is unmatched, Almost feels like he deliberately presses down EVERY key the way he wants to.

I didn't think there was anyone left who could play Bach like this. Sublime.
Sokolov is one of the best Bach pianists I have ever heard.
In all fairness, there is nothing to dislike in any of the different styles he performs.
One of Sokolov’s most epic Bach performances. I heard him play this live .
Superb performance of a great pianist. It places Bach music where it deserves: Heaven.
Sokolov--the ultimate boss at the piano. Enough said. Piano playing does not get any better than his.
My thoughts exactly.
Grigory Sokolov The Boss??? REALLY=Grigory Sokolov=THE TITAN OF THE PIANO!!! THE GIANT OF THE PIANO!! Grigory Sokolov his Chopin piano concerto no 2! Brahms piano concerto no 2! There was Richter, there is Sokolov.
Incredible technicians, but incredible artists too.

This interpretation offers an enjoyable and rich journey for the ears and the heart.
Thank you Sir Sokolov.
Has to be "Sir Grigory". Sir goes with Christian name.
What a gem! I liked all of it and the interpretation of the fugue is absolutely the best I have heard. Bravo!
Outstanding. I love how Sokolov plays Bach.
YES ~ wonderful and sublime indeed. Thank you!
Brilliant piece - heard it first in Tatort "Lass sie gehen", playing on the radio in the detective's car.
It is paramount
Trickier than it sounds to learn the whole thing from memory, and of course to play it like Sokolov... forget about that :)
As far as I know, he plays everthing from memory.
Amazing inetrpretation and performance. Great musician and artist, not only a great pianist. One can feel all the layers, perfection of trills, culminations and surprises. Thanks for uploading.
So far best pianist nowadays
Magnifique !
Thank you for uploading this video. I learned a lot about the 4 voice in the piece. Thanks again! I'm your 1000th subscriber, by the way
3:37 - fugue
Sokolov maintains tension such that each note demands those following it.
That's Bach's work.
An ideal to pursue!
sublime as always
The Bach-Sokolov unit!
Master craftsman and master performer. What a labor of love! An aural feast.Thank you, nnamffohsaile, for contributing to the beauty in the world as you did here!
I am fascinated. Love it...
perfection
Bravissimo!
Gian Luigi Zampieri 6
fantastic player!
Wonderful!!
One of the very few pianists that can play Bach with the precision of Gould.
and with more 'lilt'......
IMO it is demeaning to Maestro Sokolov to compare him to Gould.
I see a lot of you talking about Sokolov (rightly so, that it is a really good interpretation and performance) however fugue of this piece is one of my favorite Bach moments. Now I know what Bach sounds like.
Wonderful! Johann Sebastian at his best
Yes, BWV 904 is a real jewel among his keyboard compositions. Nothing in the two books of his "Wohltemperierte Klavier" is as well written as this. And we know that almost all what Bach wrote is pure gold.
HOW DID HE DO THE TRILL ON 5:30??? 😱
He is THE master of trills! This and his incredible sensitive piano/quiet tone. Unique!
Pathy1 although he played the fugue much slower but to be able to play that trill on that part is just crazy! His thumb must have another finger!!!
just a guess but I think he is alternating both thumbs lol
@Brian Bernstein yes. I've played the piece and was taught to alternate LH 1-2 and RH 1-2. Not that my interpretation can even begin to compare to Sokolov's, of course!

Bad Kissingen 6/7/2004, not Schwetzingen!
what is going on 6:01...that transition sounds like avant-garde jazz :)
Isn’ t it just a suspended 4th? You might hear it like an 11th chord in jazz.
I appreciate Sokolov.. interesting the way he plays..
That's like saying that Einstein came up with some interesting equations.
I may be hallucinating but I could swear I heard little sections of the fugue that Shostakovich used in his 24 Preludes and Fugues.
Nice
3:02
What a badass performance!
Play this video at 1.75 speed and you will hear Gould.
Speed ≠ Quality, especially in the music of J.S. Bach.
Difficult to understand why Glenn Gould did not play this wonderful piece.
Also BWV 543
So you would have liked to hear GG playing this piece while humming it?
@@excelsior999 His humming has never been an issue for me.
What a treat to hear Bach being performed in the romanticized manner that pianists before Glen Gould performed Bach. Yeah but Gould was not Koopman nor Pinnock.
perhaps rhythmic precision. When Glenn Gould's recordings of the Goldberg Variations appeared in the 1950s, the rhythmic attention was something new. But today many pianists play with good attention to rhythm, and Glenn Gould is not THAT special anymore...
false
Nonsense.
We dont need Gould's crap anymore.
how it should be.
This is the way J.S. Bach would've heard it, including the tempo and ornementation, which respects baroque litterature: th-cam.com/video/NeG_dCsqAvY/w-d-xo.htmlm18s
What sort of precision? I think there are plenty of professional pianists who play Bach with great attention to detail.
Avner et vous brought me here
Plantin Mathieu
It seism little slow to me. I prefer the Brendel version.
Grigory Sokolov=THE TITAN OF THE PIANO!! THE GIANT OF THE PIANO!! Brendel was Only 4th place in The Busoni piano competition! Brendel so over-rated pianist! You must be thinking of Shostakovich's G-minor fugue (watch?v=e5DCwK1EQcY) - its subject sounds nearly like a citation from this fugue.
Several of Sh's 24 preludes and fugues recall or echo Bach's, as if channeling the older composer - but with the difference, in Sh's case, of evoking a Russian folk-song melos..
He is more interesting as gould.
When will you people stop comparing Sokolov, this most wonderful of pianists, with the self-aggrandizing Glenn Gould, that champion hummer, who could never play anything without loads of affectation?
There's something here like the difference between Rembrandt and Picasso.
No matter, I think Gould is much greater. No offence, just a personal opinion.
Sokolov, like so many Russian pianists is a great admirer of Gould. Sokolov and Gould are the two best Bach players I've ever heard. They complement each other brilliantly,
Hobott Did Gould preform this piece? I haven't seen it; do you have access to the link; thanks (I agree with you, but Sokolov is 2nd for me.)
***** I don't think GG ever played this. Sokolov is magical in this work.
+Ullrich Herz I do. English is too hard for me.
... and without that weird humming!
It is nice, but I prefer Gould, though....
i can't find anywhere that glenn gould played this on the internet.
he didn't play it, only another Gould fan. I'm a Gould van too, I think his understanding of the notes is unmatched, Almost feels like he deliberately presses down EVERY key the way he wants to.
You're too balmy for criticism.
He is too soft for Bach
Ebano e Avorio qui sono ORO, ORO PURO!
