Here in Colorado camping at twelve thousand feet in winter the propane stove was not reliable but the coleman liquid fuel stove keeps working perfectly ill stick with a 425f.
I just purchased a 425f from a salvage store that still looks. I lit it today and I think I like it better than my propane stove. But I am 47 years old and I grew up using this type of stove.
I have a manifold that you put right on your 20# propane tank. (I'm old and we used to call them 5 gallon tanks) Then I have hoses that attach to this manifold that power, 1 my Coleman stove, 2 my propane bbq and 3 at the top I have two Coleman lanterns hooked up that will really light up your whole camp site. I love it!
I found a small very old Coleman fuel stove without the fuel tank sitting in a trash can. I bought the propane adapter and it works great. I’d prefer fuel but hey this old stove from the trash just got a new life.
I had an experienced (old timer) camper tell me years ago to just use any unleaded gas, which is basically what white gas is. I tried it and it worked fine. Did that for many year till I was given a propane stove. Since unleaded is the only gas available at most places, the same gas can that fills up your lawnmower (unless it is an old 2-stroke) can run your stove.
back in the day a lot of old timers would use regular gas which will end up ruining the generator, but back then the gas was so much cheaper then coleman and the part was cheaper, they just replaced the generator. I have a 1940's PREWAY 2 Burner Camp Stove Model P4521-A my parents bought when they married in '46, I am going to convert to propane for grins and giggles
I have 3 or 4 of these stoves and a couple of old lanterns. The tanks on the stoves have rust in them and the lanterns need new plungers. I looking forward to rebuilding them all. Great video.

MY ADVICE: if you use your stove to boil water and quick cooking items for 1-2 people= use the propane converter. BUT if you use the stove for longer cooking(chili cookoffs, stews, roasts) or cooking for 2+ people use the white gas, it is WAY cheaper! the propane converter also wastes alot of propane too as the stove isn't optimized for it
You can buy adapters and hoses to connect a 20 lb. ( or smaller) refillable propane tank to anything made for the ripoff disposable containers ($3 - $4 for one pound of propane -- you've got to be kidding me.). If you use a re-usable tank and buy the propane from a retail bulk supplier (or even the tank exchange suppliers, which are more expensive than filling you own tank, but still way cheaper than the throw aways), it's quite a bit cheaper than Coleman fuel and comparable to gasoline.
This is exactly what I need. I recently bought a Coleman gas stove and have a bad generator. I don’t want to pay $40 for a new one. The stove is only worth $10. Thanks for the video and link.

I like the video.good for peppers too
I found my old Coleman stove in my dad's basement after he passed. A mdl 425 from 1974 I think it was. I was cleaning it up, and when I went to unscrew the valve assembly from the tank...the red tank cracked where it screws in to the tank. Not my fault, it just boom and cracked. And you'r right, they want too much for a new tank so...thanks to your video, I will convert it to propane! I already found one for about 30 bucks! Thank You Bro!
I run kerosene in mine. You do have to preheat the generator tube to do that but it works awesome. The versatility of these stoves is highly underestimated.
I am done with propane stoves after going on a scout troop outing for snow camp, waking up in the morning after snow and 10 degree temps, and the propane cooking equipment is frozen. Coleman fuel is made for being stored & can last many years, and gasoline will lose its potency if stored for many years. Let a vehicle sit for 4 years, come back and siphon it out, and you will see its bad gas...
My old 425 was still running and burning white gas, but it was difficult to get to run, and to keep running without a lot of pumping (not sure if the generator is going bad, or if there is an air leak, or a leak at the pump or...). I purchased the Mr Heater gas to propane converter, and the flame was incredible and very controllable. Saved the old stove, plus I still have the white gas option if I need it.
I found gun oil will seal any leaks in the pump. keep it wet even in stoarge. Second, white gas is cheaper and lasts longer. you can even use any gas excuding mixed gas ...found out the hard way!. Propane sucks as you have to carry these or store and then dispose. White gas , one can and muiltiable uses. Although you can at some areas have them filled ...not likey and more waste.

Yeah, and the tanks are always available or can be rebuilt, so at a later date if you want to give it a go with white gas, you can rebuild it and try it out. Thanks for watching!
i wonder what the BTUs are on this stove with converter. Those converters are pretty pricey now. Keep your eyes open on buying a used white gas / multi-fuel one that comes with that converter. You can find them used for cheap and get the converter with it. And, keep in mind that it should work even if the white gas tank needs some fixin.
Good video, this would be a great backup to have. My only concern (if it is a concern) is the propane has to travel inside what will be a red hot tube before making it to the burner. The propane is traveling as a gas, so flow shouldn't be an issue I guess. Does the propane change properties once super heated before making it to the burner? As we know the original white gas system uses the burner to atomize the fuel before reaching the burner. The system was never designed to run propane in the same manner. But maybe is doesn't matter.
Look on the underside of the gas tank's tabs (the parts that fit into the slots) & embossed there are the month & yr (last 2 digits of the yr) it was made. This was pointed out to me just today as I went back to a thrift store I'd seen some Colemans at just before closing. Also, on the end of the tank, where you lift, then cover the hole on the pumping knob is a hole you're supposed to put oil into (it even says "oil"). Same guys recommended Zoom oil. Where's the link to the conversion kit? I'd like to buy one to keep on hand.
Yep, there's a leather plunger inside the pump. If you don't oil it, it will dry out and shrink, causing problems with pressure/maintaining pressure. I oil mine maybe once every 3 months. But, I use it all year round.
Sorry, here is the link, I will put it in the description as well www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004RDQT92/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Thanks for watching!

No prob, Yeah I have been looking for another cheap one I can use for parts but now the local Goodwill has decided they are "rare" and want like 50 bucks every time they have one no matter how beat up it is! I still want to use the gas tank as well as propane so I will keep on looking Thanks!
@@Iridium242 oh WOW I hope mine doesn’t do that lol. I’ve seen them so many times and never thought about converting to propane. Now I want to get one a do it because I need a new stove and they don’t build them like that anymore. Cheap junk is all they put out now!
The stuff that generally needs to be cleaned or replaced on a Coleman stove-- the "generator" and shutoff valve assembly -- are replaced by that adapter. The burners can be taken apart and cleaned, but that's usually not necessary unless they get really gunked up. In fact, I would guess that running them on propane would burn out any carbon or other gunk that has built up in the burners, unless they are seriously clogged up.
Just clean up the end that's left. Get it nice and square... Pick out the old piece from the brass end... Now. Freeze the shaft in the freezer overnight.. Next day.. Heat the brass assembly in hot water to about maybe 175 degrees.... Pull the shaft out of the freezer and it should just drop inside the brass part... Let everything normalize and you should be good to go.
the reason i bought an old white gas stove is cause i've had a propane stove and hated it. one $3.50 propane tank only lasted a couple days of cooking. where as an old white gas coleman i can cook several days on a tank. old stove are more cost effective than propane in my opinion
I refill my small propane tanks with a refill adapter I bought for 6 bucks. Hooks them up to a 20lb bbq grill tank to refill. Ends up costing about 63 cents each.
@@MariaRodriguez-xq4bk That's what I do with my super-cheap (but very serviceable) store brand propane stove, and my Coleman propane lantern. You can refill the throw-away tanks, but I think that's questionable safety-wise. Those things aren't really made to be re-used.
@@j.s.3297 Look again. They are currently available on the Stansport website as well as Ebay. Just do a search for Stansport propane stove converter in Google.
Yup, figured a lot of people have these and might not want to mess with the white camp gas, this is a simple way to get it done without using that stuff. Thanks!
Another thing to consider...A couple months ago, we had a power outtage in our area for several days! My house kitchen stove would work on the range top, but has to be lit with a match of course...but the oven and broiler would not work because they have to have power to come on. So I looked around and found an old kitchen stove that had the old style pilot light on it. So I bought that old stove and am cleaning it up so if shtf or another power outtage, I can use the oven! That's big! I planned to convert it to propane for prep sake, and when I went to get numbers off the back of the stove to start searching for LP orifices...there they were! The LP orifices were screwed to the back inside of the stove already!
I prefer the duel fuel stove. White gas and unleaded. From a shtf point of view. Propane will dissappear fast if the grid is down. I refill my 1# coleman propane bottles and i have a bunch. But they didn't last long when I decided to only use propane. On the otherhand I have 2, M-1950, Roger's stoves and they used less than 1 gallon of gas for 1 month. With propane prices going up and using 4 to 4.5 bottles per month for cooking. The gasoline stoves cost less and will be used when shtf. 5 gallons of gas will last longer than bottles of propane when there is NO GRID for an extended length of time. And when stores are ran-sacked after a grid down, just as long as a person saved fuel in 5 gallon gas cans, I'd say that person would be in better shape. Just have extra parts to repair what you own, like I do.
The Coleman stove is made that way, because if you're using liquid fuel, the fuel needs to be vaporized to burn efficiently, and having the "generator" heated by the burner helps vaporize it. There is no need to do this when running propane from a vapor draw, and stoves that are designed for propane don't run the propane line through the burner flame.
Does anyone have the link to the conversion. Can’t seem to find it on amazon. I have the coleman 413 similar to the one on the video also acquired on a buy nothing group.
great solution. Mine is similar but more modern. I have a Coleman 2-burner propane stove (from Canada) with a regulator pipe that accepts only the 1 lb canisters like you seem to be using. Unfortunately I can only get a hold of more modern C100 / C500 /CA500 canisters at outdoor stores (living in Norway). I can get the 1lb canisters at welding places but they're crazy expensive. NOWHERE can I find an adapter or information about a Coleman regulator pipe to my old stove that would fit the new bottles. The fact that there are so many names for the various threaded fittings doesn't help. If you have a tip, toss this dog a bone! thx!!
You can by the hose that they sell for mr. Buddy propane heaters and you can run a full size 20lb tank with adapter in video or any accessory that use the one lb tanks. I do this with all my propane stoves.
What about connecting to a 20lb propane tank after you buy the adapter? I purchased the conversion hose but I can't get it to work. It lights up but almost immediately the propane cuts off. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Nice. I have made the same conversion on the same stove. I'm still plagued with the age-old Coleman problem. The secondary burner has a weaker flame compared to the main one.

Apparently you don’t camp in cold weather. My friends propane valve froze up on our last trip. My old white gas stove worked perfectly.
Good video if I missed it I'm sorry were did you get the propane adapter at
i wonder what the BTUs are on this stove with converter. Those converters are pretty pricey now. Keep your eyes open on buying a used white gas / multi-fuel one that comes with that converter. You can find them used for cheap and get the converter with it. And, keep in mind that it should work even if the white gas tank needs some fixin.
Very cool. I need to get one of these. We had one when I was growing up and used it quite a bit.
Just found the converter at Sportsman's Warehouse in Minnesota
...you're LUCKY!!
I was worried about that too but it never gave me any issues, guess they have it figured out but hey it works great
Thanks man great video. Iam headed to get that stansport now!
Very cool, thanks for sharing. But you forgot the link to the conversion part.
Sorry, here is the link, I will put it in the description as well
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004RDQT92/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Thanks for watching!
I have one of these and the generator is in great shape. In case it breaks I have a spare one taped under the inside of it, brand new in packaging.
Should last me until my death, why use anything else? ;-)
I see those all the time at the thrift stores for cheap. I would just get another one for 10-15 bucks and then you always have spare parts. Just a thought. Great vid. I’m gonna subscribe to your channel, you were first on line when I searched this. Thanks for doing a video on this.
Or just buy the extension and plug your big tank and no more running out of gas.
@@MariaRodriguez-xq4bk That's what I do with my super-cheap (but very serviceable) store brand propane stove, and my Coleman propane lantern. You can refill the throw-away tanks, but I think that's questionable safety-wise. Those things aren't really made to be re-used.
Date code is on the bottom. I have one that is similar, a 413g from 9 78
Cool I will have to double check, I did this vid a while ago, Thanks for the info!
I just commented the same thing. LOL, mine is from 8 78. We just got it today. Someone tossed it out. It looks pretty dang good too.
Thanx, I'm poor. Someone gave me an old stove and now I can use it!!!
Looks like that converter is no longer available on Amazon. I was able to find it in other places though - Walmart, Ebay, Stansport website, etc.
I checked everywhere including Cabelas... Not in stock
@@j.s.3297 Look again. They are currently available on the Stansport website as well as Ebay. Just do a search for Stansport propane stove converter in Google.
@@j.s.3297 ...a Mr. Heater adapter is currently available from Fleet Farm, in Minnesota, for $19.00 plus $7.99 shipping.
@@Blakgun thank you! I spent 20 minutes on his Amazon store site.
Cool! I'll get one
Easy peasy. Thanks. Good information you can find those stoves all over.
Yup, figured a lot of people have these and might not want to mess with the white camp gas, this is a simple way to get it done without using that stuff. Thanks!
That's a good mod it's always good to have options. Thanks for sharing.
@@sogman7265 ...you're LUCKY!!
I use a M4 with the conversion tube. Awesum!!!
Where did u get the covert to propane and part number please, as I want to convert mine in to propane. Thx
Got in on Amazon for around ten or eleven bucks. Stansport makes it
@@Iridium242 No longer available on Amazon, and it's now priced at about 20 bucks from other sources.
Thanks for the info, I ordered me one and should have it tomorrow just in time for deer hunting.
good article but could not find the link for the converter tube
Yeah they are really hard to find now kind of stinks, they were all over the place when i did this video
Cheapest I can now find them were $23 at the walmart website and sportsman warehouse
Can you provide a link for the propane generator
Just have extra parts to repair what you own, like I do.
cool mod and upgrade..thanks George
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing the information and making a good video. Thumbs up
Iam up and running! Black sheep has that adapter thing. So odd though that a gas line goes across a hot grill. Oh well working great thanks again
Hi Sr . can you please tell me we're you both the part for the propane tank.thanks. Bloss. Piedras negras coah Mexico 🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽
Hey i got a stove like that but missing the pump. Ill sell it to you
great solution.
Excellent information thanks
JB weld if you don’t have a tig welder.
Cool video, thanks.
Gd video thanks
I couldn't find that item on the link you shared. Could you please send me the link. Thank you my friend. Godbless!!!
great video thanks
Do you still have the fuel tank to this stove? If so, under the 2 tabs the date is stamped on it. That may be the year this stove was assembled.
Oh and thanks for the video 👍
I was going to convert mine but those kits are not available now...oh well, I just use it with gas.
I need the link to it
I have 3 because I camp.
do you need a regulator to run that off a 20lbs tank?
Price for the conversion has about doubled. He says about $11 now it's about $21.00.
That's what inflation is unfortunately.
JB WELD that tube.....ought to fix it just fine
Seems easy enough!!
I built my own
Where is can I order this????
I may have to try that, Thumbs Up
Do you think you could use map gas, if you don't turn it up all the way?
Naaa would be way too much for the stove, I would stick with either propane or white gas. My guess would be map gas burns too hot.
Nice kit.
these work pretty well but i can't ever get one to last more than 2 seasons
I have a 1965 sears 2 burner looks like the Coleman will it work ?
Very likely that is just a re-branded Coleman stove. As long as the inlet to the burners is the same size as the one on a Coleman, it should work.
...you can TRY-!!
Can some one please tell me the part no.on this I can't seem to find one
When I got this years ago they were all over amazon, i am told you can check on REI and they might have it in stock but they are hard to find now
Nice. I have made the same conversion on the same stove. I'm still plagued with the age-old Coleman problem. The secondary burner has a weaker flame compared to the main one.
not a "problem" it is the way it was designed dummy. its a master burner and slave setup
Where did u get your propane converter kit
conversion kit at amazon or walmart online
Glad I found your channel and just subscribed. Hope you have great and productive day today. I’m working half a day then picking up a stack of pallets. My wife works at Lowe’s and I go around back and there are stacks of oak pallets for free. I’ve been steadily getting them and breaking them down for free fire wood. Sure it’s a process but slow and steady wins the race and it’s better than sitting in front of a tv! I’m curious what state do you live in? I’m here in Upstate NY.
I am in Nevada, about 60 miles outside of Vegas, originally from NYC, but lived in both Westchester and Poughkeepsie for a while, got tired of NY and ended up out here in the wilds of Nevada :) Thats a great deal on the oak pallets, cant beat free firewood.
Iridium242 Only been to Vegas for a wedding but my Raiders are moving there shortly lol. Poughkeepsie isn’t too far from me, I’m in Delmar right next to the liberal capital of Albany😡😡😡 We are expecting somewhere around 18” of snow this weekend, bet you don’t miss snow blowing and shoveling... lol
@@flashfronkprepping1779 I actually get snow here in the desert from time to time, if you go WAY back in my videos, before I started doing prepping vids (around 2008) I have videos of my house and street covered in snow. We are in the high desert so every few years we get a few inches. Its funny to see the panic because people are not used to it, and its pretty much melted away by the end of the day. Right now the pass to get into Vegas from where I live is covered in snow but yeah, I don't miss having to shovel it. :)
Iridium242 btw thanks for the replies! I’m sure you get lots of comments and replying takes a lot of time. Reports are saying we will receive ice and heavy snow so I’m expecting some power outages. Last year I retwired the panel box to accept a 30amp lead from the generator so the whole house is powered. I can’t run everything at once but in five minutes we are back up and running if the power goes out!
@@flashfronkprepping1779 Nice, I have a smaller generator here but most of my backup power is from solar, I built a small backup system that works great for my needs. We are supposed to get rain/snow here today but I need to shoot a video later lol so I may be out in the mess or I may have to put it off for a day! Talk to ya later!
Good stuff! Add to history!
