South Carolina girl here. I’ve had this video saved for about a year now, and it took Mean Helene for me to finally watch it start to finish, and fix the old Coleman stove that wasn’t working properly. So thanks to your helpful instructional video, I finally have something that can help my neighbors. Bless you for assisting me in this catastrophe!
Irmo, SC guy here. Hurricane caught me off guard too. I did have a Coleman 502 single burner that did provide some hot coffee, at least. I now have 4 Coleman stoves restored - two 426's, a 413 and a 425. I'll be ready for the next power outage. Hopefully, it won't last 4 and a half days!
It is rare to find someone who has the mind of an engineer, skill with a camera, and great command of clear, precise, English. This would have been enjoyable even if I did not own such a stove (and an old, single-mantle lantern, that still works great after forty years). Thank you!
That is so funny, you said single mantle lantern. I was at a flea market a day before a storm was to hit here in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada where I purchased a 23-year-old Coleman 286 that has never been out of the bow, styrofoam still around the glass, and a 425 Coleman stove that has never been turned on, but I was worried about dried up seals, leathers, etc., and here I am, making sure I don't burn the house down by lighting them up without educating myself first. I only hope that it is not too hard to find that valve seal for the gas valve on the 425. I assume all the seals on both units here are dried up and dangerous.
I’m in the midst of tearing down and rebuilding a Coleman 413F stove . Your video ( I’ve watched numerous ) is by far the BEST !! I can now continue with the rebuild with a lot more confidence!👍👍 Thanks .
This is by far the best how to video I’ve seen on TH-cam on anything ever! Thank you very much for taking the time to do such an amazing job at explaining, showing and demonstrating the process
Excellent video demonstration...I inherited 2 of these from my late father in law, been sitting for at least 6 years. Been scared to mess with them, but after this I'm comfortable with getting them back into usable condition. Thank you for excellent demo on complete teardown
I have an old Coleman stove that I would like to disassemble and clean up so I have watched at least a dozen videos over the last few days. Without a doubt, this is the most informative "how to" video I have found. Thanks for being so thorough & clear in explaining the parts, clean up & repair process, and proper storage.
@@retrotechandelectronics Yes, I agree. I had one tech who really wasn't clean and I screwed up the fuel tank, then another guy make it more clear. This guy is very clear and explain things well.
They are not too hard to work on…. Take pictures of disassembly but not complicated…. Fixed mine it took two weeks for fuel tube to get here but it has not given me problems in over two years
Yes, I really learned from this video. Such careful, precise work. The quality of photography, just everything came together. You are definitely gifted, thank you!
My oh my, can't believe the amount of knowledge, educational explanation, clarity and visually pleasing and insightful information can be transferred to your audience in such a short video. Been looking for hours finding videos, manuals and blogs to understand the machine fully and your video just tackles everything.
Totally the BEST how-to video I have ever seen on TH-cam. No waisted monolog, great tips, every detail covered, good camera work, editing and audio. Thank you!
I have watched other videos on cleaning these stoves. Your video is the most comprehensive and thorough demonstration of the complete tear-down, cleaning, and reassembly of the Coleman stove. Your video is a confidence booster.
So great to see & hear a lucid, logical, eloquent disertation. Well done! These are great SHTF stoves. Everyone should aquire one for camping, winter storm power outages.
I have one that is over 50 years old and has never been maintained, and after hurricane Ida I brought it out and it burned great one gasoline. I used the same stove for 5 months on the road in 1999. One of the most elegant engineering designs I have ever seen!
Excellent video, thank you for posting it. Just got down a 425E from a shelf in the garage where it has been sitting for 30+ years. The tank had some coleman fuel in it. It was my folks which I inherited. Oiled the pump (leather cup) and emptied the old fuel into a can. Found an excellent YT video (this video!) that shows how to test the tank and valves before you put fuel into the tank. My tank & valves tested OK. Then filtered some of the old fuel thru a paper coffee filter back into the tank, pumped it up and it fired right up and ran great. Pretty amazing after 30+ years of storage. Brought back childhood memories of camping & cooking.
Fantastic in-depth video on the proper maintenance of these old stoves. Thank you for helping people keep these things going. The modern day Coleman products are no-where near as good as this era.
8/16/2022 I have an older model version of this stove, probably an A or B version, ( none of the seams are rounded) which I found in the trash about 40 years ago. So it's somewhere close to 60 years old or better. At that time it was rough, but only needed a new fuel cap and generator innards. I have always wanted to rebuild the old girl, and now I have the process to do it. Thanks for a fine instructional video. Rust removal may be problematic though. These old stoves are rock solid and should be part of everyone's preparedness kit. I have a propane Colman, never used it in 22 years, still in its box. I'll go to the old tried and true "White gas" version every time. ;-)
If you don’t already publish instructional videos for a living, you definitely could. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a clearer explanation of steps involved on any subject matter. Well done.
My grandfather recently passed away and he had one of these in storage. I took it thinking it was a propane stove and almost took it to the scrap yard thinking it was a piece of crap before I did some research on how it works. I thought it was the coolest thing. When I got home from work, I took it outside and with the old fuel inside and it being in storage for who knows how long it lit right up and worked perfectly. It's the 425B so I believe it's at least 60 years old. Can't want to pull it apart and get it cleaned up. Your video will definitely help. Thank you
This was great, and I thank you very much. My father started camping up in the Adirondacks in 1955 or so, me in 1967 as a young boy, and I carried on the tradition after his death in 1987. I still use the Coleman stove he bought in 1956 but have never done any work to it. We used to use unleaded gas, but switched to Coleman fuel decades ago. I've never drained the fuel upon storage and never had a problem just pumping it up and lighting it. Always works fine. But it's been a few years, and after 67 years I think it's worthy of a rebuild. Will buy the graphite from Old Coleman Parts (maybe a new pump leather or whatever they use these days) and hope all the other parts are in serviceable condition. Have to find a place that will sand blast/powder coat the tank...
Great video..I began working at Coleman on August 25th 1971...My first night on the job was on this campstove line. Over the next several months I performed every position on the line. Back then it was a great company to work for. Very family oriented.. I spent 35 years with them through 3 mergers and acquisition.
I would have used a scotchbrite pad and Dawn dish detergent and water to clean the parts. Then, reassemble the stove back together. Your video helped me fix my Colman 425.
WoW! Bud you brought back old times for me ! I was a Coleman repair guy .. I could still smell the fuel and cleaner while you did the video . BOOM you did it just like we did it ! GREAT JOB .
Thanks so much for this video! I just found two 425s at our local transfer station for free. They are in great shape and I will be using your video to help guide me through their checkout Thanks so much!!!
Such a fantastic video sir! In depth knowledge of every element, presented perfectly with no wasted time. Very much appreciate you taking the time to make such a detailed video. It really helped me. One of the best tutorial videos I've watched 🙂 Best of luck
Excellent information on a complete rebuild of these stoves...I have 2 that have been stored for decades that need to be gone through & rebuilt to get them functional again...I have a 425D & 425E...can't wait to have 2 fully functional classic Coleman stoves!
Thanks, very timely as my 425 E is doing noting but blowing yellow flames and leaking in the interior. Great teaching style and it reminds me of the classes I had in "A" school back in the old days of the Navy.
Beautiful work! These are great " PREPPER " Stoves. Coleman fuel, MSR Fuel, White Gas, but also FILTERED automotive NON- ETHANOL pump gas works great with no problems whatsoever. The Coleman Filter FUnnel is ideal when you can find it. Again, great video. Thank you.
Thanks for this video. I echo all the other reviewers on how clear, thorough, and easy to follow this instructional video is. I have a Coleman stove (not sure if it's this exact same model, but it looks like) that I bought in 1975 right after high school graduation, for a celebratory camping trip to the Smokies with my girlfriends. It's worked fine (with zero maintenance), the only thing I've done is buy a propane converter so that I can use bottled propane with it if I want the convenience of skipping the pumping that goes with white gas. Most recent time I used it, though, I got only a low flame. Was thinking of finally replacing it, until I saw this video. Now I'm excited about the process of cleaning it out and getting it in shape again. Maybe it will last another 49 years!
When i got my 1st coleman stove a few yrs ago i watched many videos to learn all i could about them. I occasionally watch some now as a refresher. I have to say this video is the most thorough one ive seen of all. Thank u. One tip--i use very fine steel wool to wipe down the needles, tubes and brass prts. and then spray down with a cleaner.
This is great and clear, also you get to the point not like most TH-camrs that are more interested in showing their face, thank you for this good video
Nice cleanup and refresh. Clear and to the point. These are amazingly simple when you break it down into groups and steps. The great thing about this cleanup is that you aren't afraid to use is when you're done. That powder coat on the tank is superb. Tell your friends and anyone who has one of these that the lighting instructions are on the lid. Read and follow them and you won't have any problems. Top issue for the rookies: 1. Don't tilt the tank to fill it. Fill the tank as it sits on the stove. This prevents over filling and reserves ample air space in the tank. If you tilt the tank and over fill it, it won't light properly because fuel will drown the air induction port. 2. When lighting, make sure the lever is up, tank pressurized, light your lighter or match and hold it to the burner and open the main valve ALL THE WAY right away. If you try to nurse and throttle the valve, it will not start properly and flame up. This is because the instant lighting circuit need high velocity air mixing with the fuel in the fuel and air tube for a clean burning startup. If you try to throttle it, you won't get the velocity and you'll flood the generator causing big flare ups. If you don't follow these "rules", it will still eventually run OK but you'll get black soot everywhere, waste a lot of time, fuel, and eyebrows in the process. Great video, well done. Two enthusiastic thumbs up!!
Outstanding in every aspect. Retired Stationary Engineer, Steam power plant for a state facility. Ongoing seminars & conferences, upgrading tech classes every year throughout my career. I know many people who would do just as competent a job on this rebuild, very few who could teach it in as fine a manner as this video. Excellent vocabulary, everything to the point, great step-by-step procedures with the proper explanations of functions. I only regret my lack of access to shop equipment since I retired Thank you for the effort and time you put into this, I know this will help a lot of folk who are not tradesmen.
Already there. Miss the 20% coupons, new store just opened 5 miles down the road. But when I worked, I was welcome in all the shops to use their equipment within my abilities, as everything was put away and the space and equipment was cleaner than when I arrived. I retired in 2012 and my home tools just don't match the equipment, tools and especially the professional advice. I also took care and did the repairs on the HVAC/R ans steam systems as that was my shops' jobs.
This is an incredible breakdown. Just found one of these in my parents basement crawlspace and wanted to set it up for camping this summer. This is everything I needed to know in marvelous detail, thanks again!!
Great video very through! I have the same stove someone gave me. I love the powder coating! It looks amazing! Thanks for the best one I've seen yet on this!
Thanks so much for this! My stove had accumulated some residue over the years, and the burn was a little weak. With the help of this video, it's running like new again, despite its trail-won battle-scars.
This is the BEST video on this topic. It might be good to show a later version of the tank pump that dispensed with the retaining half-moon ring and replaced the pump piston leather with rubber.
Going camping soon and I have a 413E that's having gas flow issues, your video was the first to pop up after a quick troubleshooting search. Excellent demonstration, your video was edited so that visuals were clearly displayed, and your vocabulary was very precise in diagnosing and addressing found issues. I found this video incredibly useful and I can't believe your audience is as small as it is for the attention to detail you've given. Your channel is definitely deserving of more exposure, you've earned a sub out of me!
@@retrotechandelectronics , I think many people use Coleman stoves for camping & emergency use. They’ve been around for many decades. Coleman is similar to Tide, or Bounty PTs. A recognized brand, that I think most Americans recognize & don’t consider buying any other Brand. I’m looking forward to seeing this stove totally restored! As many have requested! TY. Great educational video. I’d rather repair versus buying another 1 in our throw away economy.
Bravo. I just pulled my 425 out of the attic, which we used one time 30 years ago. Looks brand new but it is shooting yellow flames out of the burner. Now I have a idea what we need to do.
Excellent video. I just got my first coleman brand new. First thing I will do, is to remove all screws and ad a bit of ceramic high temperature grease. That will help when the unit has to be serviced later on.
Thanks! I just bought a new Coleman 424, which I think is exactly the same mechanically beside minor changes maybe... your video will be very useful to keep it running for the next century :D thanks and greetings from Italy!
Excellent video, I mean excellent. I'm in PSL, FL. Every few years I have to bring it out for a hurricane. My great aunt bought mine for me for my 16th birthday, 49 years ago. I subbed
Excellent job. Just picked up a new 2 burner so now I know more about it’s maintenance procedures. I have a few older (ancient) lanterns around 1960 ish that I’d like to disassemble, clean up and rebuild if necessary. Possibly you have something on the lanterns to share. Thanks so much. May God Bless
Great video, much appreciated. I picked up 3 of these yesterday for $25 in working but not ideally burning condition, plan to use your tips to tune them up soon
Excellent, thanks. Not sure which model of this same stove I have from 1976, but since new, it's always leaked (small flame) where the generator tube goes into the manifold leading down to the burners. Never a huge issue, just blackened the bottoms of any pan I put on it... :) Never investigated why. Ideally, I'd like to get a propane conversion setup for it but they're getting pricy and probably not worth it since I don't even know when/if I'll ever use the stove again. Side note, I traveled around the country for many months in a 1968 dodge van, forward control, engine/cover between front seats. I had a vent above that and could use the stove on top of the engine cover in poor weather just fine... :)
Thank you for this video. now i know how to maintain and clean my newly bought stove. Many videos i watched guys told they threw there stoves away because of malfuntion. if they saw your video i am sure this would not have been necessary to buy a new one. Greetings from Austria (Arnold Schwarzenegger not Australia)
I watched the whole teardown. Great job on the stove. I couldn't do the breakdown of the 425 I have but would love to do it...I'm not sure I could put it back together again. Lol. Great job!
Great stoves, dad and I camped for years with ours, I inherited it when he died and continued for another twenty years. Finally gave it to a friend and he's still using it.

The great thing about this cleanup is that you aren't afraid to use is when you're done. That powder coat on the tank is superb. Tell your friends and anyone who has one of these that the lighting instructions are on the lid. Read and follow them and you won't have any problems.
Top issue for the rookies:
Nice detailed video! Seeing the paint job on the tank was worth it alone! Love it!
I may do the rest in another video. Its not paint, its powdercoat
@@retrotechandelectronics Yeah, figure of speech. I think powder coat is a good idea.
Much of the tools needed, albeit slower in process could be found at harbour freight.
Glad it was helpful!
thanks for this video. it helped me get my garage sale 425c running.
Excellent!
Extremely helpful! Best restoration video I found! Got mine up and running well! Thank you! Bless
Thanks! glad you liked it.
Great video very through! I have the same stove someone gave me. I love the powder coating! It looks amazing! Thanks for the best one I've seen yet on this!
I have another up and coming Coleman powder coating project to be released soon.
I'm guessing this is a mid 1970s model Coleman Stove.
We had one. Great stove. Great memories. Great Video.
Hmm. I didn’t check for a date code. I should and post in comments, thanks.
Thanks so much for this! My stove had accumulated some residue over the years, and the burn was a little weak. With the help of this video, it's running like new again, despite its trail-won battle-scars.
Glad I could help!
Thanks for your time it's going to help me with my dad colman 413G were having to put him ina nursing home
Great video. This will be super helpful as I refurbish my Goodwill find. Thanks so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Just picked up the same stove at a flee market . New in the box , never used . Got it for 20 bucks .
Good job! One of the best Coleman stove work videos on here.
Thanks 👍
This is the BEST video on this topic. It might be good to show a later version of the tank pump that dispensed with the retaining half-moon ring and replaced the pump piston leather with rubber.
This is the only version in my possession
Going camping soon and I have a 413E that's having gas flow issues, your video was the first to pop up after a quick troubleshooting search. Excellent demonstration, your video was edited so that visuals were clearly displayed, and your vocabulary was very precise in diagnosing and addressing found issues. I found this video incredibly useful and I can't believe your audience is as small as it is for the attention to detail you've given. Your channel is definitely deserving of more exposure, you've earned a sub out of me!
My videos are a niche market...
I’m a new follower also.
@@ActorKevinOlson I also use it when we run out of burners and need an extra for boiling.
I just did maintenance on that same stove, mine is 1977 vintage, still works great
Yeah, they can last forever.
Bravo. I just pulled my 425 out of the attic, which we used one time 30 years ago. Looks brand new but it is shooting yellow flames out of the burner. Now I have a idea what we need to do.
This is a very thorough video. Nice job.
Glad you liked it!
this will be my go to video for maintaining my stove
Glad to hear it!
Very nice video with concise easy to understand commentary.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
the best video on Coleman stoves i have found thanks
Glad you liked it!
Best video on these things I have seen.....Bobby below is spot-on.
Thank you! Now I can really go to work! Very detailed - I needed that.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this well done demonstration - professional and entertaining at the same time.
You’re welcome.
Nice concise and detailed tutorial-very helpful!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Outstanding job!! One of the best instructional/tutorial videos that I have ever seen!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely great job! Coleman should hire you to do their repair videos. :)
It’s only fun if it’s not a job.
Such an excellent video! It should win a prize for quality.
Glad you think so!
I plan on doing a further restoration on this one, this coming fall
I burn gasoline in mine for years now. I've never taken it apart. I leave the old gas in it. It always works.
@@larryrobertstein7485 , What type of gasoline do u use? Regular, Medium, or Premium? Diesel? Kerosene? I have no clue! TY in advance!
Very well done. You dont skip nothin . Aside from your other video i just watched this is the best 26 minutes i spent all day.
Glad you enjoyed it, I have another Coleman project coming soon.
Awesome video. I have an old Coleman three burner stove from the 60's. I see a project in my future. 👍👍
Very cool!
I love watching video how how things work I am not knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff so this is kinda like being in a class room which I love thanks so much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
