Loved seeing your build. Thanks. In 1988 I had a dream to drive the US west coast from Canada to bottom of South America in a Jeep. Pre internet and nobody I knew really built out 4x4s then. It wasn’t realistic. We’ve now lived all over the world and had some amazing adventures. But you guys are awesome. Love following you. Love what you are doing. Love your rig.
That s awesome you got the opportunity to live around the world! Yes th e preparation of 4x 4 on a larger scale is more recent. Never too late though ;)
Nick, you did a great job showing us all the equipment on your Defender. You'd make a great tour guide 😊😁😊. And Mathilde, you also did great keeping up with Nick 😊😊. 💖💖
Hi Nick and Mathilde. As I said to you in Instagram....I love your Defender Albatross. It is Awesome. You are really prepared for the adventure. The Albatross is the most equipped Defender I have seen in my life! You are both well prepared. Fredito, my mini pig and I send a lot of good vives. Be safe my friends. Remember if someday Albatross decide to come to Puerto Rico, let me know. I have a big spot in the yard of my house and you can stay as long as you want. Keep going,. God Bless you. Safe trip!!🐷🐖🐽
Nice review - enjoyed that. Water is important here in Australia because of the vast distances and desert. Our caravan, which we tow with our 2009 110 station wagon, has 200 litres of water tank, plusb80 litres of grey water. Recommend you get a hose with a filter and 12 volt pump so you can pump from rivers and filter before putting in your tank. We have a 120 litre diesel tank which gives a range of about 950 kilometres. Diesel is widely available but your extra 20 litres would be useful in very remote areas. Be aware Australia is VERY fussy about vehicle cleaning to keep out imported pests and diseases, so you will need to clean the vehicle very thoroughly yourself, but be prepared for Customs to order a second cleaning by a professional company at your expense. We are on the Sunshine Coast north of Brisbane so feel free to make contact if you would like to visit. Australians normally go north in winter to chase the sun and south in summer for cooler temperatures. Australia is vast, so be prepared for a lot of travel. There are many free camping spots.
Thank you for all the details, yeah we’re thinking we may need extra fuel for Australia. Water I think we should be fine with the extra jerrycan, it would mean having 115L of water and 140L of fuel. But potentially we could upgrade to 195L of diesel.
Fabulous set up - We also have an overland 2012, 2.2 110 Defender (called Poppy) but with an X-Vison-X pop top - that we love - and our inner set up is from Landy-Ausbau. The BAS re-map will make a great improvement in drivability in the middle gears - however watch out for clutch issues with the extra power - we changed out our clutch for a LOF ‘powerful’ one and took the opportunity and changed the output shaft for a stronger one at the same time. Truly love your videos ! - safe travels.
From my experience you guys will need that extra water jug in Australia. I traveled across the Aussie outback and there's absolutely nothing for hundreds of kilometers. My Aussie friends kept telling me, take as much petrol you can carry, as much water you can carry and 2 mounted spare tires...😎
Really inspiring, your videos and expedition in general is an amazing story of a global society that share the same values when it comes down to the real life among "ordinary" people .
What an awesome setup. Seen that Albo is left hand drive, i would put a water tank under the Landy the side where you cook and other side for diesel. Jerry cans for more water and diesel. You could also put 45l tanks left and right off rear wheel arches.
Hi Y'all, Nick you would love my 1958 Dodge 4X4 US Army M42 Ambulance (May It RIP) I got it in 1987, took a few years to customize and we traveled extensively Alaska, Canada, US, Mexico down to the Panama Canal. I those days, during the US War On Drugs, we thought it best NOT to go farther south. We had plenty of problems from Mexico City and farther south to Panama City. It's for sale now, but no one living [off grid] has made a good offer. I have been truly amazed about how well you have been received in Central and South America. It is a whole new world down south now*-)
great video. Nick did a great job with your explanations of the layout. Iam so impressed with the forethought you put in to the configuration of Albo. I cant wait to see your next adventure. Continued safe travels for both of you!
Thanks for the tour. Your ideas and thoughts fit perfectly what we are considering as "necessary chages to happen" to our Defender. The newest bed system of ex-tec is indees very nice and comfortably, even to old caps like us (haha). But we are also thinking of the chip tuning to increase the power of the engine as well as implementing an intercooler. Looking forward to many more videos of you guys.... And we're happy to hear that the initial three years are now 3 to 4 years. ;-)
I'm in the process of building out my TD5 110 I to an overlanding camper - Bruce the Landy is in Germany right now but I'm back home in Arctic Sweden counting the days .... He'll be done by summer start and the final modifications will go in when I get my hands on him again. I'm keeping things locally for now in the EU and UK. Great Landy tour and I definitely got several "hmmmm like the look of that" moments! Drive safe and I'll see if I can find you on IG
Very nice setup. My 2014 110 had a remap (to 180bhp) as well last month and it’s really a very welcome progress considering the heavy weight in our overlanding Landy’s. Ps. my 2.2 tdci doesn’t leak either.
Hey guys you can take off the awning as you don't use it much and put a side mount solar water heaters with pressure it is about the same size as the awning you can use the water for shower and cooking.
I assume you'll keep the DPF for when you get to Australia and can swap back? The high lift and winch might not get used but the piece of mind of having them, the confidence to go remote and solo and then the 1 future time they completely save your ass they could pay for themselves being there in 1 use. Good walkthrough.
Hi! Thanks for for feedback. About Australia do you know if we bring the car over they will check our DPF? If so do you know if it is just a visual inspection to check if the catalyst is there or if they also take exhaust measures ? Thanks a lot for the feedback
@NextMeridianExpedition not an Australian, but they are tight on rules, even on tyre sizes and for sure on exhaust/DPF. I think you need a basic inspection on cleanliness and roadworthyness to get into country and if you fail you pay storage charges while they clean or yoy get it legal. I'd ask overlanders that have done it but it could be expensive to get into Australia if they dont like your vehicle. I've just researched for my own trip not experienced but kinda came to the conclusion with the most expensive shipping in/out and limited visa time there Id consider buying and selling there for my trip rather than taking my own. GrizlyNBear did a good few videos on the process for them and especially the cleaning and roadworthy test
@@KevIsOffGrid yes we have already everything well set for cleanness measures including people to help us with the import. It was specifically on the DPF we were wondering we will search further
if you remove the DPF pack it up and send it home for starage, refit as soon as you can when back in places that require it as if you don't and get cought with a removed DPF, it's big fines. Personally, I'd just strain the fuel and regen it more often. Better to not have one. Good walk around and interesting on a few points. 😀
We’ll buy a new one when we get home, we’ll keep ours but simply put a straight pipe inside the catalyst so it’s not visual visible. We need to remove the DPF, we are loosing tons of power and the regen is now twice a day… it’s unbearable
Not sure if i ever use gasoline as a source for cooking with because dose it let off odor that will get on what your cooking just like smoking meat , i love my hi-lift farm jack it has many usable features other help changing a tire , i also have a set of 4 maxtrax boards but for heavy duty i also bought aluminum traction boards that don't flex , i own 2 land rovers a04 D2 & 07 LR3 both built for overlanding, i have always loved th defender square box look but was too expensive to buy but for what you two are doing this is nice size defender and pop top gives you more room , there no limits to overland builds good luck in your travels
Love living vicariously through you guys. And if i were to do a defender build id do something similar to your build you giys really thought about everything.. maybe addind a second alternator or just upgrading the existing one and adding a couple more solar on top along with another lithium battery (depends on if id need it or not
Agreed on the second solar panel and extra battery. We are looking into getting that extra solar panel and we do have a 1000 watt power bank as a 3rd battery that we’ll start using more
Bonjour Peux tu me dire quel référence d’intercooler tu as mis?
Great job explaining everything. Everything is holding up well. It has been a great vehicle for you're kind of traveling. It looks like gasoline and Diesel is very cheap in Ecuador? 👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻✌🏻
@@NextMeridianExpedition I thought gasoline and Diesel was cheap down there. If you're going to Venezuela gasoline and Diesel both are only $0.15 a gallon 15 CENTS A Gallon. because they drill for oil and are a oil nation, so they pass the savings onto the people.
How impressive. You two are so organized! And what it must have taken to figure out what was needed to outfit Albo for a multi-year journey - wow! Curious how you went about that. (That bird at 10:33, know what it is? Beautiful tropical voice!)
T hanks for making this video. Awesome tour. Can you please give more information on your heat exchanger system. Love the idea on the extra space under. Also wanting to do the same
Hi Paul! We have tubes bringing the coolant from the engine in our water tank and out again. We have a on / off switch so we can control when the coolant takes that circuit and a temperature gage to control the temperature of the water directly next to the steering wheel. So if we want hot water for a shower we would activate it maybe 20/30’ before arriving as we drive to bring the water to 40 degrees Celsius. It is awesome and very simple. It really increased our comfort a lot.
@@NextMeridianExpedition is there a small radiator (exchanger) in your water tank or just a pipe passing through? keen to do something similar at some point
@@paulfisher1160 just a pipe. We have a video from the very very beggining of our channel showing the installation we made with our friend th-cam.com/video/PfPshiuXP28/w-d-xo.html
May not need the extra spare tire. 4XOverland talks extensively about this. He did have one expedition where he needed it, but the tires he was using were not KO2’s. How do you get power to your heater? An AGM battery emits gas does it not?
Hi Nick and Mathilde, compliments on your elaborate tour of your car setup 👍 One question, though. What is the make/brand of the storage box in your left side rear quarter panel?
Awesome rig tour . Have you looked in to head space pop tops ? I like them for the rain back and side. Covers for air flow when raining . And bigger windows . And have lift up beds and roof racks rated for over landing , they are out of Australia . Was a very informative rig walk around video . Thanks for sharing your thoughts on over landing rig set ups . Cheers from Steve Stott in Sutherlin Oregon U.S.A. :) :) 🌎🍻👍🏼😁
Hi thank you very much Steve! And no didn’t know the brand. Will have a look now and since Australia is next it could be an idea to make the change, but the next problem is that we don’t have the money for it if we want to finish the whole 7 continents 😊
Hey Nick and Matilde, my boyfriend and I have been following you guys for a while now. Your videos are great, very entertaining. Great job! I have a question that I’m hoping that you can answer. I have a small Ford transit connect van that I travel in throughout the US. And I’m looking to get more space. Water jugs take up a lot of space. I want to hook up an outside water/tank holder like the one that you have installed on Albatross, can you let me know where you got it or what it is called so that I can find something that’ll work for my van? - to elaborate I’m looking for the metal crate that is holding the containers from the outside. Please let me know if you can point me in the right direction. Best regards, Kat & Corey ❤
Hey Kat and Corey!!! soooo it is GMB jerry can carriers. We had bought it on mud stuff I think but I cannot find them anymore. You can find them here I saw: www.gtv-van.com/en/black-jerry-can-carrier-module-for-gtv-gmb-carrier.html You need to mount them on bars but I am sure you can ask directly on the website if it would work on your van, I don't see why it would not. Good luck!!!

Bonjour Nick et Mathilde, We met last fall near Lake Louise while I was with my Defender 110 called Le Métèque. Your video is very informative, especially since I'm preparing mine for a year long trip for next year. Can you give us more details about the brand or your supplier for the heat exchanger for the water heater as well as the Belgian manufacturer of the metal boxes to be installed under the body for storage. Congratulation!
Bonjour Jacques!
Hi Nick, great Defender setup!!! I saw you really enjoyed the Kimberleys!!!! I had one question regarding the the rear door foldable table you installed. Which brand it is, have you installed the Frontrunners one? Did you had to change the existing rear panel. Thanks a lot for your answer and enjoy eastern Australia!!! Alex
Also. (Not thinking about cost) what are your thoughts on some kind of air suspension or a combo air and spring suspension so that you can change the lift/ how it responds on smoother roads and more outback "roads"
We don’t have grey water container. It drains out. We honestly don’t use the sink much, barely washing teeth and a bit of dish washing on very cold day. But that s it. Hahahaha hot sauce container is essential!
Thanks! Not that bad, we have 0 security issues and did some pretty remote places. We think it’s more in our mind or via the media that we are scared, but it was totally fine and people are very kind.

We’ll buy a new one when we get home, we’ll keep ours but simply put a straight pipe inside the catalyst so it’s not visual visible. We need to remove the DPF, we are loosing tons of power and the regen is now twice a day… it’s unbearable
Hay I worked for BF Goodrich for 34 years and built those tires you use.
Wow thank you! we love them
Absolutely amazing adventure, I sincerely hope we'll get to see your travels across Australia. Sad to see you leaving Africa, travel safely ❤
we did not go yet to Africa still in South America
Sorry, I don't know how that got onto your site, it was meant for Bluelandy. Anyway, looking fwd to following you 👍🏼
Thank you for the full review.....I have an idea of what to go for
Glad it was helpful!
Very informative .Thanks.
Thank you Dave!
Great tour, very informative.
Thank you Graham !
I watched it twice. Nice. Nice. 🙂
Whoohoooo! Thanks
nice landroer thanks for the tour
Thank you for watching
Love living vicariously through you guys. And if i were to do a defender build id do something similar to your build you giys really thought about everything.. maybe addind a second alternator or just upgrading the existing one and adding a couple more solar on top along with another lithium battery (depends on if id need it or not
Agreed on the second solar panel and extra battery. We are looking into getting that extra solar panel and we do have a 1000 watt power bank as a 3rd battery that we’ll start using more
Bonjour
Peux tu me dire quel référence d’intercooler tu as mis?
I love landrover 😍😍👍👍
Thank you!
Great job explaining everything. Everything is holding up well. It has been a great vehicle for you're kind of traveling. It looks like gasoline and Diesel is very cheap in Ecuador? 👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻✌🏻
Very very cheap yes! Colombia was the cheapest we got but Ecuador is about the same
@@NextMeridianExpedition I thought gasoline and Diesel was cheap down there. If you're going to Venezuela gasoline and Diesel both are only $0.15 a gallon 15 CENTS A Gallon. because they drill for oil and are a oil nation, so they pass the savings onto the people.
Brilliant !! love this video.
Thanks so much!
How impressive. You two are so organized! And what it must have taken to figure out what was needed to outfit Albo for a multi-year journey - wow! Curious how you went about that.
(That bird at 10:33, know what it is? Beautiful tropical voice!)
Yes it is a headache to think about where everything should fit at all time 😅😅😅 hmmm I wonder if it was not peacock 🦚 there were many in that place
@@NextMeridianExpedition Thanks, will go watch it and catch up. Very cool
Nice video 😊 amazing car 🤩
What’s the brand of the bag on the engine hood?
Thank you! It’s from blunt force products or rock n road 4x4, it’s the same company.
Great video. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful!
May not need the extra spare tire. 4XOverland talks extensively about this. He did have one expedition where he needed it, but the tires he was using were not KO2’s. How do you get power to your heater? An AGM battery emits gas does it not?
Hi Nick and Mathilde, compliments on your elaborate tour of your car setup 👍
One question, though. What is the make/brand of the storage box in your left side rear quarter panel?
Hi! Thanks a lot! The box is from a German brand : gmb mount.
Best stove available. Unfortunately, spare parts are becoming hard to get now.
True …’but really the best
@@NextMeridianExpedition …👍🏼😁
You can find them here I saw: www.gtv-van.com/en/black-jerry-can-carrier-module-for-gtv-gmb-carrier.html
You need to mount them on bars but I am sure you can ask directly on the website if it would work on your van, I don't see why it would not.
Good luck!!!
Thank you so much! You’re the best - I look forward to your next video.
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks !
Michel
Bonjour! On a hâte de voir ça. On utilise l ´application mapout! C est vriament super!
@@NextMeridianExpedition Super merci et à bientôt
Nice set up.
Thank you
Nice tour Albo at is best 💪💪💪💪👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you Lucio!
What up Nick and Matilde? Does Overlander sponser you? You vehicle is so cool! What a great setup! I love my 3 burner Coleman stove!
Thank you! We get equipment form a few brands that we use all the time. If you re interested we have promo codes on our websites
We met last fall near Lake Louise while I was with my Defender 110 called Le Métèque.
Alex
His knee really turned out good that could have been a disaster for the expedition surgeon was fantastic
Really amazing! Running around the mountains like nothing
Great tour. What brand is your trash bag? Are you happy with the quality of it?
It is 4xtierra ! You can find them on Instagram. We like it a lot it is made with sailing type material and has a lot of storage.
Also. (Not thinking about cost) what are your thoughts on some kind of air suspension or a combo air and spring suspension so that you can change the lift/ how it responds on smoother roads and more outback "roads"
That would be very cool, but indeed expensive 😊
Hi
What‘s about the cabin and tent isolation ? Armaflex and something in addition? And for the tent?
Thanks a lot in advance
Enjoy the track
by cabin you mean the shower tent?
Another great video. Does Albo have a grey water tank for the sink or does it just drain out? And you forgot to point out your hot sauce container :)
We don’t have grey water container. It drains out. We honestly don’t use the sink much, barely washing teeth and a bit of dish washing on very cold day. But that s it. Hahahaha hot sauce container is essential!
Awesome set up. Curious, what wheels are those? Kinda look like Zu wheels but not sure.
they are bfgoodrich all terrain we love them
@@NextMeridianExpedition
Yes haha, but I meant the wheels… not the tires 😇
Hi guys. What brand the bonnet bag is ? Looks awesome
it is blunt force uk you can tell them you come from us
Wow! Great job on the walk around and the work done to Albatross!
I have a question, how dangerous is navigating through Central America.?
Thanks! Not that bad, we have 0 security issues and did some pretty remote places. We think it’s more in our mind or via the media that we are scared, but it was totally fine and people are very kind.
Excellent review. What does the defender weight?
It is about 3000kg everything included and water refill and fuel refilled
I was going to ask that..... Are you running the standard Ford Puma TDCI engine? And is it coping ok with the extra weight? Particularly in hot climates
hi guys ! thanks for the video ! Quick question, is your reverse cam/dash cam bluetooth? Or does it need wiring? thanks !!
Hello amigo! It is wolfbox it is in our Amazon list in case : www.amazon.com/shop/nextmeridian.expedition/list/12B2Y0Y52XROU?linkCode=spc&tag=nextmeridiane-20&domainId=influencer&asc_contentid=amzn1.ideas.12B2Y0Y52XROU
By the way amazing trip planned !!!
Cool, thanks i will have a look for sure. And yes, it is going to be a good trip! I am sure we will have questions for you before. Chat soon! Travel safe
What is the TMP system that you use for the tire pressure? You guys are doing great!
Just a random one I bought on amazing 😊
Great video. Where did you get these lovely pouches at the rear window from? :D
hey ! they are mud stuffs basic black pouches but we customised them hahah
I came across your channel while watching Eva. So I’m watching your journey since the start and have reach on this episode.
Love your journey.
I just have question but answer me if you’re ok with that. How must it have cost you approximately for the set up of the overlanding defender as it is right now in this video.
As I just love it as I have all the complete set up for everything.
Reply me if you’re ok with that.
Thanks
Really nice tour! 🎉 What have you done against rust? What do you have for underbody protection and cavity protection? 😊
Thanks 🙏 we galvanized the chassis before leaving but no further protection has been done.
@@NextMeridianExpedition oh wow! Everything was down?
Nice description. How do you do your navigation?
We use googlemaps for normal roads and MapOut to explore off the main roads
New subscriber here! Great music selection & story telling!
Could you share the name of the company that makes your heat exchanger?
Thank you!!! We made it with our friend from Belgique George who owns the Roverland workshop. If you are in Europe check it out he is a genius
Well done.
🙏
My neighbour restored one with new Nissan turbodiesel engine too
You missed that empty spot for a good led bar above the windshield 😅
I wonder if the DPF doesn’t hinder the running of the engine would it be better to leave it? Some countries may require it to be there.
That s what we re thinking too. We re trying to know if in Australia they will require it. In South America it is not a problem to remove it but would be a pity to have to redo the work in Australia in a few months
Hi , a loto of traveller prefer the Def td5. From what I have understood is because less electronics and is more reliable. How many Km have you done with your defender? Any issue? Can you telle me pro e cnos of the td4? 🙏
I've been moaning about renovating & refitting the brake calipers, discs and handbrake shoes on my X-Trail for ages (finished tomorrow). I think I'll stop moaning now! I wish I could afford a landy. Sadly stuck with an X-Trail (good vehicle) and a Renault Clio (the worst car I've ever had in my life - I know you're French but Nicole & Papa have a lot to answer for when it comes to Renault!).
I'm still waiting for Matilde's children's audio books to come out - as I said before, they would sell like hot cakes. Maybe a story about Albo?
Good job on the brakes!!!! Hahahaha Clio 🫶🫶😍 we re just Born with Renault in the blood we cannot do anything about them.
I know I know, the audio book idea is slowly making its way!
Do you have an extra tank for fuel? Vis-a-vis, for traveling in Africa or Australia?
Yes, 45L extension and 20L Jerry can. We may want to get the 130L fuel tank in Australia
Hi ! Where you've buy the front bag on th engine of your car please ?
Tank's in advence !
We got it from bluntforce uk! You can reach out with the code NextMeridian they do 5% !
