im currently building mine just got the roof conversion and getting it measured up for the interior next week so this video helps with what I could possibly get etc
A very well sorted Defender overlander. My (constructive) comments: I don't really agree with the criticism regarding winches. For sure you can decide for yourself if you think it's a necessary emergency recovery tool. But I've heard the claim that it "gives you a false sense of security and gets you into trouble" many times before, and I think it's mainly become a fashionable criticism to make that people like to repeat. But if you extend that idea, you could also say "I won't buy sandboards, because they give me a false sense of security", and "I won't buy mud terrain tyres", and "heck... I won't even buy a 4x4 in the first place", and on and on. In the end, if you're sensible, and you know how to drive within your limits, a winch can be a good emergency recovery tool in the event that you find yourself in such a scenario. All that said, I don't have a winch either, but I'm trundling around here in the UK rather than living the dream travelling in the wilderness like this lovely couple. Regarding the laptop power, whilst an inverter definitely has its place for some items which can only be realistically powered by high voltage A.C., I think it's not the best way to power a laptop. What you are effectively doing here is going from 12V D.C. through an A.C step-up converter to 240V A.C., and then inside the laptop PSU you are going from 240V A.C. through a step down back to around 19V D.C. And there is waste in those conversions up/down and to/from D.C and A.C. It's better to get yourself a proper 12V D.C. power supply that uses a switch-mode PSU to regulate up to the 19V laptop requirements. Then you're never going to A.C.** and you're never stepping up to HV and back down to LV. But those are my only two (constructive) criticisms which, if the channel owners see, I hope they will take in the way that it's intended. This is a fantastic build and you are both absolutely living the dream! I wish you well and you have a new subscriber. Cheers. ** except that a switch mode PSU by its nature does do that, but not to the same extent as going to 240V A.C 50Hz.
Yeah I understand all of that, but those other amounts are lower cost and weight and you need tyres anyway so why not ATs . We are overlanding not off roading, in other words vehicle preservation is top priority so we would never put the vehicle in danger with in reason as it's our home. So for Overlanding for me they are not needed as I'm never going to risk the vehicle. I have no idea about electrics so I'll take your word on it :-) We did try get a 12v charger for it but because it's so powerful we had to get an inverter, it's done now Thank you for taking the time, appreciate it 🤙
@@wildsouloverlanding Yep, the opinion "I simply don't need a winch" is of course totally valid. Cheers, EDIT: Not sure what laptop you have. But mine is a fairly beefy top of the range Dell laptop and I run mine off a 12V charger on the Land Rover no problem. Worth checking out. And the inverter is still useful for other things, even if you don't continue to use it for the laptop.
@@wildsouloverlanding If you are having to use a dedicated Lenovo charger because it has a proprietary connector, or maybe even a standard connector but one that is not standard across laptops in general, then yes - you're probably stuck with the mains charger and that's as good as you can (realistically and practically) do. In my case, with the Dell laptop, it uses a USB-C connector for the PSU and because that's standardised across many laptops of all makes and models, I can find appropriate after market 12V chargers easily. But be aware also that many laptops which have a non-standard connector for their mains PSU can _alternatively_ take power via a USB-C charger connected into a compatible port on the laptop, so that's worth checking on your model also. So for sure it depends a bit on your particular laptop that's a good point 👍
Thank you for sharing build inspiration :) I'm only part-way into the video and loved the dropdown table that has your Maxtrax attached to it. Could you tell me where that feature is from so I can purchase one for the side of my ute?
@ I would send a photo of my current set up but comments don’t let me. You guys have a really cool set up. Ours is more for quick surfing trips and small camping trips. We just throw whatever in when we need it. Nothing permanent except for some storage over the rear wheels. Did you guys change the hydraulics for the roof with the additional weight? I have 2 surfboards on our roof rack for the first time and it was noticeably harder for the roof to go up
Awesome set up, cant wait to do mine very similar to yours and ship out of this big island, Australia is done, I really need to see more cultures and new places
Very informative video, thankyou! . Love watching you both. I always wonder , mechanically how skillfull do you need to be in order to safely do what you are doing ? thanks
Thanks for sharing the costs for the whole build, you don't often hear owners speak about this ! Also, did you just paint over the Alu Cab logo on the front? I love their product but I'd rather not have their advertising so prominent on my car
Loving the videos guys, and love the rig..!! I have a TD5 110 Three door Defender. Where did you get the interior blackout window coverings that have suckers and also magnets?
Interested to know how you had room for the FrontRunner table on the rear door. I see a bit of ply instead of the door card - did you retain the rear wiper?
Really appreciate the walkthrough and details. Bonnet bags was new to me. Great also being up front about costs for different parts. The build looks neat and efficient. Any reason you went with a Puma? Other than getting a newer base vehicle (less age and issues) or was there any other considerations done?
Howdy, glad your back seems fixed! How much did the original vehicle set you back? I'm wanting a 90 as I love them but I understand the 110 is much better for sleeping in... I maybe would do the mountains in the summer so I could use the roof tent... Decent examples are between 28-35k unless you want to pay silly money at the moment.
Have you had and cracking on the roof conversion? Does the car feel tippy when loaded down? Did you put a sway bar on the rear? What upgrade did you do to the suspension? Love the channel. I am a multi Defender owner myself...
