C-Stands seem like a common sense set up but we off see unsafe and inefficient use of them. After this same topic did so well on my IGTV I figured a refresh would be a good idea. Below are some of my links for the gear if you're interested.

This weekend I was flying a light over my model's head. She asked if she should worry about it falling on her. I told her to not worry, I learned how to do it safely. I know this is an old video, and I watched it when it first came out and several times after, but this gave me a valuable education to be able to set up my stand safely. I purchased my first C-stand shortly after watching this. Clearest, best C-stand information I've seen on TH-cam. A belated thank you for these videos, Seth.

I owned an overkill boom that I used in a small apt! I loved shooting under it with no post in the way. I had to let it go and no one wanted it so I put this $700 dollar piece of gear on the street! A few years later I have a studio and I still dont own a c stand! And now I have to replace my Canon Pro 1000 printer which I really need....does anyone else spend a few thousand to make a few hundred? Am I hopelessly addicted? I watched this video a few times prepping myself for that stand...great presentation Seth...thank you again a year later.

Great video, thanks a lot, very helpful.
Side note: Wikipedia thinks the name comes from a lighting company named "Century lighting". Could not spot a 100 inch reflector in many pictures of vintage Hollywood movie sets ("...The C-Stand, or century stand, was named for the company that first produced bespoke lighting gear for live theater and filmmaking: Century Lighting in NYC, which later became Century Strand and eventually Strand Lighting. In later years, studios, grips and gaffers began to manufacture the earliest versions of what we now call C-Stands. The original C-Stands had welded bases that did not fold up or adjust but the fact that they easily nested together made them invaluable on the stage.")

Great video Seth. Thanks. I have learned how to safely rig my C-stands and the correct terminology. I should have had this video two weeks ago. I set up (wrongly) a C-stand and was stood beneath it and loosened the grip arm knuckle. The arm and pin rotated and hit my forehead. Lots of blood! So thanks for the safety video. Excellent teaching. I would get the black stands over the silver ones. I had to put (laying horizontally) my Matthews C-stands and rollers in a storage shed for a few years. All the silver stands are badly rusted at the side that was horizontally facing up. I have a black C-stand, no rust problem. I also have some avengers that did better (less rusted) than the Matthews. Not very humid where I live, probably they would have rusted a lot more in NYC.

Hi Seth. The Godox AD600PRO has a perfect socket for 5/8 baby pins, no rocking. The question might have been when a flash head socket is mounted parallel to the ground on the pin with the flash head at a 90 and the head then rotates due to gravity. The proper way to mount a head on a boom is to use a baby pin vertically and mount the flash head on it using the tilt adjustment on the flash head to tip the light down, gravity can not twist it on the baby pin then. You showed an example of that on the grip arm at 32:06.

glad this was helpful just be aware those stands save cost by using Die cast parts which over time can crack so just be sure you look it over every now and then on the collars any metal that feels texture is diecast usually

Seth one thing I did years ago to keep lights from twisting or rotating was I ground a flat spot with an angle grinder on my pins so when you tighten the head it won't rotate, worked well for years for me. You'd think after 40 yrs in a studio I'd learn something lol, I like your stuff.

@@LastXwitness I'll be doing two person interview next, me & other. Do you have suggestions as how to light it? I've been googling around and found that maybe a cross lighting style like this th-cam.com/video/SekTNiXCiEw/w-d-xo.html could work. We'd be sitting at the end of a table facing each other, three cameras, two for closeups and one as the master both in frame. I'm thinking about two led panels with softboxes as keys and one large lantern'ed COB in the center as fill. I wonder how that would play out.
Also, I released my first video in English, check it out if you like. Bear with me, doing it in English turned out to be more difficult than I initially thought.

The "pumpkin" is a Kupo counter weight for grip stands on Adorama. I use the Flashpoint C stands and so far they have been really good but I'm not using them constantly like you. Flashpoint also makes a long baby pin that has divots machined in for lights or modifiers to stop them from twisting as you were describing. I'm sure the Matthews are better for heavy use situations though. Great informative video Seth!

Yea there’s a million diff pins actually Grip is endless but there’s some standards you’ll run into out there in rental houses and studios and knowing them can get you through a lot on the fly

Seth, should call your instructional videos the “no bullshit zone.” Right to the point and useful while completely avoiding the nonsense. This one helped clean up my c-stand bad habits. Thanks.

Great video Seth! I see many "you tube photographers" with their c stand set up with the weight over the small leg, no sand bags, big softbox blowin in the wind... When I comment on it I get excuses and sometimes $h!t... keep up the great no BS work!

Thank you so much Seth. Best video ever on how to die C-stands!! Just got my first yesterday, and ordered another two this morning.
Question, how do you call that horizontal construction at 24:44 , and where did you buy yours? I see there are 3 pins attached to it, are they baby pins?
Thank you very much in advance!
