    This is quickly turning into my favourite gear review channel for photography. Lots of reviews on cameras and lenses but lighting equipment, not so much, can’t wait for you to review the new Godox spotlight projector and how it compares to the Nanlite, other Godox and Aperture models

    I have the same problem with turtle base stands. When you set them up the knob is always in a different orientation than my regular c stands. It's annoying when you have to take that extra bit of time to spin the stem so they can be soldered properly or arm out without hitting the knobs. For me any brand is good as long as they can hold weight, but a thing I look out for is the knuckles and knobs. All day we constant use those where it starts to strain our hands. That's why I like stands that have the knobs and knuckles shaped for our hands to nicely grip around them. That's why I usually prefer Norms stands. I too also try to not have my gear in black as well due to it being harder to find in night shoots or studio shoots. All my milk crates I use different colored paper tape to line the lip of the crate to be easier to find and to organize them. That's why I like modern grip gear being in gold!

    The other annoyance I've ran across with black C-Stands is the thickness of the powdercoat. Since every manufacturer has their own tolerances for 5/8 pins/receivers, I've ran into the occasion where the paint actually prevented the end of the arm from entering into certain fixture's receivers (not all of them). Granted, this was only the case with Matthews black C-Stands. Maybe other manufacturer's were more thoughtful. Black C-Stands were useful for me in-studio when reflections were an issue, or needed to blend into the set more.

      I have avenger anodised stands, they looked good for two years, but looked shit for 20 years after. I think black is ok for studio, if the stand lives in the studio, but definitely not in a gaffer truck.

    Andrew, these C stand tutorials are are really interesting for me more out of curiosity rather than need! Reason being, that as a broadcast cameraman here in Sweden in all my 30+ year career working in huge studios and mainly live, I have never ever seen a C stand yet alone rigged one! Is it a cultural thing between countries or is it more common in the film world to use them? None of our huge broadcast trucks, no matter what company, use them! How can this be when it is obviously standard equipment for you guys?

    Great work, great information, great insights. I believe there are some Easter Eggs... I wondered what was in the Nanlite road case.Your most recent episode answered that question. BUT, what is the Tenba Car Transport case for? Keep up the good work.

    You know I’ve been doing this a long time and I’ve never heard that these c stand columns won’t hold weight, or lock properly if inverted from the grid. I’ve seen many a grip rig these as drop downs… does that apply to Matthews, Avenger and all c-stands to your knowledge? I’m surprised because it was my understanding that the locking mechanism is a plate/brake that pushes against the shaft in a compression fit which would seem to not care what orientation the load was applied??

    Autopoles - Interested in your opinion. I've ordered a set of Manfrotto 432.3.7B but haven't really seen any reviews and should I cancel the order? My small kitchen set can't accommodate c-stands and I live in a rental so can't bolt anything to walls.

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Autopoles are common in Australia. I have at least 14 of them, different lengths.
      The large ones also happen to extend long enough to tie a 12x12 fabric to.
      I would suggest getting ba stud finder from your local hardware store so you can find the strongest part of the wall

      Due to my product problems, the rip off cost of repairs and parts, and negative customer experience that I had with my ARRI Skypanel, and my Pocket Pars before that, I will never buy or review an arri product ever again.
