C Stands Matthews vs Avenger in 4k UHD

  • As the story goes the folks at Matthews Studio Equipment invented what we now call the century stand or C Stand. These days many companies make similar light stands. In this video I compare Matthews with Avenger stands made by Manfrotto.
    They are both great stands but I give a slight edge to Matthews. Share your thoughts in the comments. By the way here's a link to some detail photos of both stands: www.flickr.com/photos/areagui...
    Other C Stand makers are Norms Studio Equipment in Sun Valley CA. Kupo I think are made overseas and Modern Studio Equipment in North Hollywood, California

    As someone who used to grip on photo shoots in multi million dollar houses, the way you handle those stands around that mirror gives me so much anxiety...

    C Stands pack down very sensibly. I like Matthews quality. The boom and gobos are excellent for precise placement of lighting and scrims. Matthews has a Rocky Mountain leg option.

    I have a pair of Mathews C-Stands, one of which has a Rocky Mountain leg and the other does not. I am not familiar with the quality of the Avenger stands but my Mathews models are probably at least 30-40 years old and are still going strong. I think that they would support a Volkswagen but, weigh almost as much as that car does...

    FWIW Kupo's are about 5 lb's heavier than both of those yet apparently rated at the same load weight. Heavier can mean better stability but I think these are better for lugging around on location

    I just purchased two of the Avenger Turtle Base C-Stand Grip Arm Kit, Roller stand and mini boom, I've had them a day but they seem like really well made stands, these are my first light stands so I can't compare them to the Mathews. It doesn't look like you can go wrong with either option. I did get a piece of chrome or metal stuck in my finger from one of the Avenger stands which didn't impress me on the finish quality but other than that they seemed great and should last a long time.

    You insert the pin with the wide end uppermost, then it doesn't simply fall through. Similarly, to remove it securely you turn the grip head until the wide end of the pin is on top before loosening the screw.

    The Matthews stand is standard size. The Avenger you have is a “baby c-stand”. There is one size smaller than the baby called the “Gary Coleman”.

    Very helpful video.
    Sadly I haven't understood all information.
    Can I use the avenger c stand with a gogo arm?
    Which one is more stable?
    I have the godox AD400Pro and a 85 cm beauty dish softbox.

    • @MidAtlanticTV
      @MidAtlanticTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are both very stable and yes the arm works with both. Either will work with your softbox.

  • @fotogfitzfoto412

    Never pick up a C stand with a grip arm by putting your fingers between the two. If someone takes it from you they will likely trap your fingers and that hurts.

    • @MidAtlanticTV

      @@HoeyLuc yes, any pin should work.

    • @MarcosElMalo2
      @MarcosElMalo2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pins are 5/8th inch (or 5/8”) baby pins-standard across manufacturers, since equipment must be interchangeable. In theory you can get a round piece of steel with a 5/8th diameter, and cut it to whatever length you wanted, but the manufactured pins have some safety features your home made pins would lack.

    If ocean beach photography was done aloft then the stainless would be the way to go ,I got away from manfrotto there products have gone down in quality so the mathews would be my choice and being made in America is a nice bonus supporting our economy

  • @Foouhomeyg

    I personally REALLY like the Avenger Grip Heads better than the Matthews. Multiple times I had lights boomed out like, for example, a simple Arri 300 Tungsten Fresnel Light off of a Matthews Grip Head and it would keep dipping down. I told the Gaffer that I was very certain that my Avenger Grip Head would NOT have this problem. So the next day I brought my Avenger Grip Head in and problem fixed. Heck I even boomed out a Kinoflo Celeb 200 once off of an Avenger Grip Head! Maybe it's just me, but I feel like Avenger and Kupo just has better bite than most Matthews Grip Heads. Can't say the same for Norms or American though.

      And yes I boomed it Righty-Tighty, Lefty-Loosey on the Grip heads.

      It’s partially the knob design that allows you to crank down harder, but also check the gasket (or washer-some people call it). The cork ones wear out and can actually provide worse traction. If you’re doing a load in at the rental house, make sure all the grip heads have good gaskets and ask for replacements if any are damaged or worn out.

      @@Foouhomeyg I read a comment from someone on youtube who said that on the Avenger the weight of the light installed at the end of the boom unscrews the grip that holds the boom to the vertical rod, instead of making it tight - which means that if the light is heavy, the boom will tend to move down. That suggests that it should have been implemented the other way around. But considering this post of yours, it actally depends on the way it's mounted by the person who's using it. Is that correct? I'm considering to buy an Avenger C-stand but I still haven't gone forward because of this. And the offer of C-stands available in Europe seems to be rather small compared to the US.

    • @Foouhomeyg
      @Foouhomeyg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nunooliveira4257 Yes Right-Tighty/Lefty-Loosey is how it should always be done on Grip Heads for sure. To answer your question I just think it was not a good Matthews Grip Head. While I LOVE Matthews Products (even though they may be a bit on the overpriced side) I just can't get enough of Avenger and Kupo C-Stands/Grip Heads.
