the guy with the long white hair and beard on the piano was my late cousin, Leon Russell. Steve Martin on banjo, Vince Gill....all of these guys are top notch and incredibly respected musicians.
Used to watch Leon on late night network TV concert shows as a '70's kid. His albums were right alongside Charlie Daniels, Creedence, etc., at the houses I partied at away back then...
That is Steve Martin playing Banjo there is also Vince Gill and Marty Stewart , and the guy playing piano without hair is Late night show band member Paul Shaffer
Mr. Scruggs was 80 when He played this! I have the C.D. and many Celeb. Musicians were involved. Some not on this particular song were Johnny Cash, Don Henley, Elton John and More!! All in Tribute to Earl's 80th. Celebration! Legendary and one-of-a-kind Production.🤠👌💫
All musicians here are legends. Besides Steve Martin, two of the greatest country guitarists to ever pick up a guitar Vince Gill and Albert Lee. Acoustic guitar Randy Scruggs, Gary Scruggs on harmonica, mandolin Marty Stewart, Paul Shaffer on piano, Leon Russell on keyboard, Jerry Douglas on dobro, Harry Stinson on drums, and I believe it was Emory Gordy on bass. Don't remember the fiddle player, sorry. Most pro bluegrass pickers are vertuosos. 🤘😎❤
Some of the old Andy Griffith Show episodes featured this sort of music performed by an incredibly talented group of young men who were great musicians but couldn't act and so the writers made the whole lot of 'em speechless. They made regular appearances on the show but never once spoke a word.
I cut my breakdown teeth on this song.. my dad was a professional fiddle player.. my brother played banjo and guitar.. i play guitar.. we would back my dad in fiddle breakdown competition.. my dad was also a studio musician and had a music TV show for 11 years in the late 50s-late 60s.. listen to much country from the late 50's 60's 70's and early 80's.. my dad is on many records.. we had a recording studio built on to the back of our house and when i was a little child we would have a lot of the famous musicians over for sessions.. a lot of my dad's career happened before i was born.. but i do remember the tv show from re-runs.. and got to play with my dad a lot as he was active up until he passed away.. still gigging just 3 months before his death.. this was always my favorite bluegrass breakdown...
My daughter is an amazing banjo player; Earl Scruggs and his former partner Lester(?) Flatt are her banjo idols. She has a hound dog named Scruggs. Lol
Yes, it was Steve Martin on the banjo, he told a story about touring with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band as the opening act. He said it was really borjng riding on the buses so he ask them to teach him how to play the banjo. He said he really enjoyed it more than listening to other people play.
yes it is Steve Martin. he's an excellent banjo player. the piano player is Paul Schafer who was David Letterman's band leader and the organ player with the long white hair is Leon Russell i believe.
Earl Scruggs not only wrote this piece as well as dozens of others, but, in fact, invented this style of banjo picking (Scruggs picking) that has come to be associated with bluegrass music. People deride bluegrass, but it involves technical wizardry on (mostly) acoustic instruments. It isn't really folk music, as bluegrass is a relatively new invention, arising in the 1940's with several musicians and bands contributing to this new style of country music. All of the musicians here are famous, and the tops on their instruments, and many are multi-instrumentalists. Having attempted to learn banjo years ago, let me tell you, it is a difficult instrument to play.
It's actually much more difficult with a banjo. These guys are really good. Sometimes you should check out this dude Bela Fleck, he's done some amazing stuff, and brings other influences to it.
Hey Mugs , check out Chris Stapleton with the bluegrass band the Steeldrivers song The Blue Side of the Mountain and If it hadn't been for Love. Really great music with Chris's awesome vocals
Is it just me or is good ol' Leon still looking like he did with Joe Cocker ...playing the ivories not moving or feeling anything but the keyboard!!!!LOL I think the shades in this one just reinforced him not feelin' any pain. Here's me all crippled up and still wondering how ol' Leon or any of them kept this up? RIP
What's going on, after Kasey Chambers covering eminem, this and another I heard the other day, that's 3 Banjoi's in a week. Wouldn't have heard one in 2 years plus until the last few days.
Just so you know that is not a violin. It is a fiddle. My daughter's orchestra director told me that the difference is that a fiddle is a violin that has had the bridge flattened a bit, in order to pay more than one string at a time. Most folks will tell you that the difference between a violin and a fiddle is that a violin has STRINGS and a fiddle has STRANGS!
It does look like Steve Martin doesn't he. 🙂. Steve did not want to participate in this because he did not think he was worthy of being on stage with these other legends. It is why he is standing back in the background. Earl Scruggs had to convince him personally to come them.
get you a banjo.. start learning those forward and backward rolls.. mixed rolls.. lol... I play guitar.. i play AT the banjo.. i'd rather strum fast than try to keep those rolls going.. but yes.. both at this tempo are difficult.. when i was a kid learning rhythm guitar.. when i would slow down or get crosstime.. my dad would reach over and whack me with his fiddle bow.. lol.. he wasn't having no bullshit.. god how i miss my dad and brother now.. they are both gone and my best bandmates will never gig again... it's especially hard on holidays.. we used to jam at family get togethers.. it's just not the same.. but i'm training a new generation.. actually two.. but were missing the fiddle player now.. nobody played like my dad.. smooth as silk.. fancy when needed.. and the best fiddle tone and swagger.. RIP dad/bro
Some people snub their noses at Appalachian Folk and Bluegrass Music, but these guys are extremely talented musicians. They can play!
the guy with the long white hair and beard on the piano was my late cousin, Leon Russell. Steve Martin on banjo, Vince Gill....all of these guys are top notch and incredibly respected musicians.
I saw Leon right away. I’m from Oklahoma!👍🏻 Actually recognized all of them!
Used to watch Leon on late night network TV concert shows as a '70's kid. His albums were right alongside Charlie Daniels, Creedence, etc., at the houses I partied at away back then...
@@ericoh123 I agree. He had an unique voice and was an amazing musician.
Leon was a Character/ Legend himself!
Didn't he also play bass guitar in the live video recording of Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight"? Same shirt?
That is Steve Martin playing Banjo there is also Vince Gill and Marty Stewart , and the guy playing piano without hair is Late night show band member Paul Shaffer
Dude on keyboard with the hair is the amazing Leon Russell.
Friends at the top of their game just having fun. Great reaction
So many legends on that stage!!! That is Steve Martin! He has his own bluegrass band "Steep Canyon Rangers" and they are fantastic! 🤠
Flatt & Scruggs were responsible for the Beverly Hillbillies theme song, along with being in the show occasionally.❤🎉😊
What a room full of All-Stars! OhMyGosh!
What a great collection of musicians.
It is Steve Martin and Paul Schafer from Late Nite with David Letterman. Let that sink in.
Yup, it's Steve Martin. That room is bursting at the seams with super musicians including David Letterman's band leader, Paul Shaffer!

All master musicians at their chosen instruments including Steve Martin

That's because it is Steve Martin..Room full of legends.
Louis Armstrong said there are two kinds of music: good and bad. And I’m not arguing music with Louis Armstrong
I'm going to get nightmares from my past Trauma watching the movie Deliverance.😂
Nice!
Notice comedian Steve Martin is playing the bango 🔥
Steve martin also played the banjo on tour with John Denver.
My daughter is an amazing banjo player; Earl Scruggs and his former partner Lester(?) Flatt are her banjo idols. She has a hound dog named Scruggs. Lol

Have you ever heard Carlos Santana's song "Europa ". Its an instrumental but so beautiful. I love it.

Steve Martin look alike for sure! My favorite bluegrass sound is a band called 'The Devil Makes Three' song called.. "Do wrong right." It's so good!
Definitely Steve Martin
Definitely Steve Martin
It's Steve Martin hon. He has played banjo forever. Has a few albums out too.
They were a duo - Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. Bluegrass.
There's bluegrass associations across the country, the festivals are ridiculous...🎉

The Steve Martin😂
Bluegrass is probably one of the only musical genres that can take the saddest song you know, and make you stomp your feet, and bob your head.
He also played on the Beverly hillbillys
Yes, it is Steve Martin
Bluegrass is what this is and it's the original country music. In pure Bluegrass you won't have keyboards, electric guitar or drums.
it is steve martin
I used to play banjo and guitar in church and bible college
