An American secret to the perfect grilled cheese sandwich... the secret is two-fold. The first is buttering the outside of the bread before it goes in the pan. Some also use mayonnaise.
The second and most important secret is time and patience. The best grilled cheese is cooked over a medium-low heat for a considerable amount of time on both sides. That is where patience comes in. The best grilled cheese sandwich can not be rushed!

    • @Jakoshdw
      @Jakoshdw หลายเดือนก่อน +38

Yup... it's a balance between letting the cheese melt and getting a nice consistent golden toasting on both sides. I like to use a butter spread that has been out long enough to soften up some so it will spread evenly over the bread. Use Medium-low to Medium heat... and flip several times so neither side get too hot. I also use a nice flat non-stick pan and will slide the sandwich around the pan slowly on each side to get a nice even toasting with no hot spots. Time and patience do the rest.

Here's a little tip from an old American grilled cheese maker: Next time you make a grilled cheese, you might do better in a flat pan, rather than a grill pan with ridges. In a flat pan, the butter contacts the bread and it gets nice and toasty and the butter flavor as well.
Cheers to grilled cheese and tomato soup.

As an American, your instinct to dip is spot on. This is proper everyday food for us, and one of my favorites when I'm feeling cold or sick. My recommendation next time is to melt the butter in the pan and put the bread in after, pushing it around to absorb the melted butter instead of struggling to spread cold butter on bread. Melt another slice of butter when you turn the grilled cheese over. Someone recommended using a flat pan, and I agree. That will get it evenly toasty and help it absorb the butter.

I'm 53 and have only had the condensed tomato soup. I don't add water or milk, I like it thicker and extra tomato-y, lol.
I always butter the out side of the bread very well (preferably something much heartier than white bread) and use whatever cheese I have on hand. Sometimes I sprinkle seasoning inside the sandwich before adding the second layer of bread. My go to's are garlic and oregano. Extra flavor and extra nutrients 😊

My grilled cheese technique... Use a flat-bottomed pan (no ridges) big enough to hold both slices of bread. Melt the butter in the pan and add both slices of bread. After a couple of minutes, put the cheese and any other ingredients you want on one slice of bread, then flip the other one so it's on top. Flip the whole sandwich once the cheese is melted enough that it sticks together.
That's the best way I've found to get the bread uniformly brown and the cheese melted but not browned.

American cheese is the traditional, but Swiss cheese, cheddar, mozzarella, or even asiago cheese all work. Any cheese that melts well.

@@raistlarn Two things in this thread:
You don't have to put the butter directly on the bread. Put it in the pan and let it melt. The bread absorbs the butter like when you make toast.
You actually can microwave eggs just fine, but only scrambled. Crack your eggs in a microwavable bowl and add seasoning. You don't need some special bowl. Then, add some milk, about 1/2 tbsp per egg, maybe less depending on preference and stir. Then you microwave it 30 seconds at a time, stirring it between each interval. It should take only 2-3 times for two eggs. You stop cooking when they're still a little gooey. Trust me, they'll finish cooking after you stir them up. If you like cheese, that's when you add it. The milk makes any scrambled eggs fluffier, so you should use it in general, but it's required when microwaving them.

My husband is American and he loves his Campbells and Progresso soups before he met me. My parents are Hungarian and I didn't really grow up having tomato soup and grilled cheese but I've worked on making my own version and using tomatoes I grow during the summer. My husband prefers my grilled cheese and tomato soups over any canned, frozen, or restaurant versions. If I feel lazy, rushed for time, or if I'm sick, I have a few packets of this Podravka Tomato Cream Soup which I believe is Croatian and it's an acceptable substitute for any time of the year.
Also, a technique I learned from my mother is to keep a pot from boiling over, you have a wooden cooking spoon laid over the pot. It helps break down any bubbles and keeps the liquids in the pot. You can let the soup simmer so that the evaporation will thicken the soup as well as concentrate the flavor. As for sugar, it helps balance the acidity and saltiness of the soup. Cheddar is delicious cheese but if you want hard cheeses to melt faster, either buy pre-shredded cheese or buy a block of cheese and use a grater. You can use other cheeses too! Popular ones are provolone, mozzarella, muenster, American, cheddar, and you can do a combination of cheeses too!
You did a great job in the kitchen today considering this is your first try! 10/10!

I make my grilled cheese sandwich just a little differently. I start off with the bread, two slices into a large pan. The pan has melted butter already in there. With a spatula, I push both pieces of bread around the pan so all the butter gets picked up. When the bread is properly grilled, I flip one piece of bread, put the cheese on it and then top it with the other piece of bread, grilled side to the cheese. Another good portion of butter goes into the pan and the sandwich is moved over the butter puddle. More butter is added to the pan. After a few seconds, the whole thing is flipped into the new melted butter.
All sides get grilled and the cheese gets melted fast! Nice and buttery AND crunchy!!! Oh yeah, dipping the sandwich in the soup IS mandatory!😊

Don't throw the chopper from China out the window, it works. You just need to keep pressing down on it. You do it repeatedly, in a fast motion and it will chop the onion as fine as you would like it. #1 Also, I don't like tomatoes but I love tomato soup and grilled cheese :-)

Homemade tomato soup is my favorite soup! Yours looks delicious, by the way. I use a hand blender to make it smooth. I prefer a slice of cheddar in my grilled cheese over American cheese. I prefer making my grilled cheese to be quite brown, so I choose the one you made on the cooktop. Great job, Andre! Much love from Indiana, USA ❤️🇺🇸

I like the browner toast on my grill cheese and a little more butter. It needs to taste a little buttery and have a nice crunch when you bite into it. I personally don't usually dunk my grilled cheese. I like a sharp cheddar sliced a little thicker. You are doing a great job. Try chili and cornbread next.

I still use Campbell's tomato soup, but make it into more of a bisque by using evaporated milk or buttermilk. Tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches have become our traditional evening-before-Thanksgiving supper. I get 4-5 kinds of sliced cheese (cheddar, Gouda, pepper jack, Provolone) and make sandwiches to order. Also, I use mayonnaise rather than butter - the flavor is about the same and it's much easier to spread!

13:42 the "my friends" get's me! I thought the whole reason you tried this was BECAUSE you heard American's dip the grilled cheese in the tomato soup - and as another commenter said "the dip is not only LEGAL, but MANDATORY!" It's the ESSENECE of the combo!

That tomato soup will freeze really well. What I do is make a huge cauldron of creamy tomato soup, and then I get a bunch of plastic containers (like for yogurt, sour cream, cottage cheese, etc.) and I add about 2 cups to each. Let them cool all the way, then put the lids on and stack them in the freezer. You now have lots of soup that just needs thawing. SIDE NOTE: It will help if when you put these in the freezer you first write the date on the outside and "tomato soup" so you don't have to guess.

I am so glad that someone else refers to their giant pot as a cauldron! I always joke about my cauldron of food complete with stacked fist stirring gesture. Hee. Actually, the “cauldron” I use is a big steel canner (on induction cooktop).

Prep in big batches, labelling and freezing. That's how I got through law school - cooking about 15 times a semester, and "microwaving" the rest of the time. (Nothing teaches you to manage your time quite like graduate school.)
(Every Saturday was laundry, cooking and massive amounts of reading. Sunday through Friday was also massive amounts of reading. Dense, slow reading.)

Andre, You are making it harder than it should be. :) Butter one slice of bread, put in pan, turn on the heat to low, ADD cheese slices on top of first slice of bread, butter the 2nd slice and just put in on top. DON'T try to do the whole thing at once. You may want increase heat, but not too much. The key is to let cheese melt while the bread is toasting. I usually turn the sandwich several times with a spatula so that heat is applied to both sides evenly. Enjoy!!! Dave USA
