    Make sure the coolant from the radiator didn’t mix in with the transmission fluid. If that’s the case don’t buy it. Just google 4Runner strawberry milkshake.

    Best engine Toyota has ever made. 5vz is bulletproof. Automatic transmission is solid as well. I've got my 98 limited 183,000 miles and I'm keeping it after 500,000. 3rd gen is a tank.

      It’s a phenomenal engine. I sold mine with 250k, well maintained, and it was perfect. Smooth and quiet still. Timing still perfect. I never did a compression test on it, but I bet it was close to factory specs. Toyota has quite a few fantastic engines. The 4.0 has also proven to be a great engine. And the 4.7 v8 is indestructible, other than the cracking exhaust manifold issues. There’s a manual tundra with the 4.7 retired at a dealership in Canada that went 1,000,000 miles, with no major engine or clutch or drivetrain work

    If she buys it I absolutely support taking the bumper off LOL. Limited 4Runner bumpers are huge, unsightly, with terrible approach angles. Dunno why everyone's saying keep the CRV (based on a "high mileage risk") because Toyotas are known for banking 400k miles and still doing great. All that being said find one without leaks/worn components because one leak could be indicative of lacking maintenance or a lack of caring to do said maintenance. Go slightly newer to reduce the chance of worn components, possibly the likelihood of more maintenance getting done under warranty if there was big fixes in that first 7 years etc.

      We may not have made it clear in the video that the CRV is already high mileage too!

    Tough decision, but owning a 4Runner is sweet. I have a 97 Runner named Gunner. It’s been my daily driver for the last 8 months. 227k miles. Just a great vehicle. A good question auto ask yourself is how long do you plan to own the CRV and or the 4Runner if you go that path?

    Definitely go for the 4Runner!!!! I have that exCt 4tunner, 1999 3rd gen 4x4 w/ locker and coincindently I just had my radiator replaced at CarX and it was $300 which is nothing. I absolutely love the 4Runner, it's capabilities, it's reliability and it's got such a great following..

  • @philiptaylor2567
    @philiptaylor2567 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The leak from the radiator is probably a hose. You’re talking about like a $25 part. Radiators don’t really “go bad”. 3rd gen 4runners had a rare issue called the “pink milkshake” where the coolant and transmission oil could mix by a seal going bad. This isn’t that common. I replaced mine with a new denso unit for around $170. It’s a repair that even a novice mechanic can perform. Basic tools, container to drain the coolant and new coolant.
    I have owned a 1998 4runner and 2003 Honda CR-V. As a general rule, the 4runner is built to a higher quality. This is the general rule between Toyota and Honda. I sold my 4runner with 250k miles, and every major mechanical part was nearly perfect. Granted I maintained it really well.
    The crv was a manual, and was quicker than the 4runner, though 30 less horse power. This is mainly due to gearing and weight. It was also louder and more tin-can feeling than the 4runner. These are really two different types of vehicles. The crv is a grocery getter, with very mild off road capability. The 4runner is an off road focused vehicle that feels like a truck on road. The 4runner is far more versatile, and will take more abuse than the Honda, especially off road. The crv is a unibody and has independent rear suspension, basically a car. The 4runner is a true truck with a solid rear axle. The 4runner has a body on frame construction with a transmission and rear suspension designed to tow 5000 lbs. Obviously you can’t do that with a crv. The 4 cylinder on my crv was much louder and gruff than the smooth and quiet v6 in the 4runner. The 3.4 in the 4runner is spectacular. It will run 400k miles if you maintain it. My dad once commented on how impressed he was with the smoothness and quietness of the 200k miles engine. Sure, you will need to replace things like timing belt, leaky valve cover gasket. The crv uses a timing chain, which is great. The crv interior felt “efficient” and durable to me. But has a lot of plastic. The 4runner interior feels more quality and warmer.
    I’m sure my bias is obvious. I can tell you that commenters who say keep the crv are more focused on city driving. The 4runner will take you places the crv cannot, do so more reliably, and tow a light camper with it.
    There is also a MASSIVE aftermarket community for the 4runner. You can put 15 different lifts on it based on preference for height, ride quality, durability, etc. Bumpers, roof racks, cup holders, interior led kits, wheels, husky liners, etc. 4runners are fun to build and customize. The aftermarket parts are literally endless. It also has a bolt on supercharger option, which instantaneously adds 70+ hp. Yeah, they are pricey, but easy to find used these days, easy to install, easy to rebuild.
    I do not regret gettin rid of my crv. I highly regret getting rid of my 4runner. I look for it every time I drive around town here, hoping maybe one day I’ll find it and be able to buy it back. Granted, I didn’t own the crv very long. And I didn’t do anything to really customize it. While my 4runner was highly customized. If I had built the crv, maybe I would have been more attached to it.
    Edit: the one you drove has the rear diff lock, which a HIGHLY desired feature for 4runner enthusiasts. They absolutely add $1000 in value to the truck, at least in my area. It would be far cheaper and easier to fix things like a leaky radiator, some interior parts, that worn out center console leather, than it would be tp install a rear diff locker on a 4runner without one. That’s one way to look at it. You would own a truck with a very desirable feature that would make it easy to sell in the future. And that worn out console cover . . . Yeah, that’s one of those readily available aftermarket parts. You can get one made of automotive vinyl, or leather. Take off the lid, remove the worn out leather, put on the new one and your done.
    You also brought up the question of why someone is selling the vehicle. There are a million reasons people sell a vehicle, even if they love it. I sold mine because I needed money to pay medical bills. Some people want something more car like, with better gas mileage. Some just want something newer. Or different. My point is that I wouldn’t let that scare you away from buying it as if it has some major mechanical issue. It probably doesn’t

    It seems that Lauren really likes the size of the 4runner better than the size of the CRV. I like the size of it as well. Depending on how you buy the car, whether its financing or paying cash, if Lauren really wants the size of the 4runner, maybe there would be a newer one with less miles on it, about the same size, with the same amount of room and comfort inside that might make more sense to go for. All depends on the car and how much you are willing to pay for it. Think about it.

      Mike C I back you on getting the 4runner! I owned one for ten years, sold it with 250k miles, and it was still mechanically perfect. I maintained it well, and sure it needed repairs done along the way. But they are fantastic, unique vehicles. Highly capable and durable. You know that crv will never be what the 3rd gen 4runner is! I have two third generation 4Runners. They absolutely have to have a separate transmission cooler. Cheap and easy to install yourself. The transmission fluid should be changed every 40,000 miles. You can put a "T" in the transmission hose at the cooler (with a valve) and drain it into a bucket with the engine idling then fill it back up where the dip stick goes in. I have over 240,000 on one of my 4runners 4X4's and it has the original transmission. The 3rd generation is some of the longest lasting vehicles on and off the road.

    My oldest son has a 2002 crv. Great car, had to replace the ac pump like 3 times and the vtec valve. My youngest has a 2001 sr5 4x4. Changed the timing belt. Water pump, drive belts and thermostat. The 3.4 is bullet proof. Has 210,000 miles. Either way you are doing good. Have fun off roading. Keep an eye on those lower ball joints and look for the pink milkshake in the transmission dip stick. Get a trans cooler or new radiator.

    • @philiptaylor2567
      @philiptaylor2567 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I liked the 2nd gen CRV’s, ‘06 in particular (clear tail lenses). I have a ‘99 3rd gen T4R Limited. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! 168k, original, springs and all. She runs and drives like a champ. I haven’t read the comments to see whether you bought this 4R, but add a transmission cooler to separate it from the radiator. But after a year of ownership you will have already learned that. If you bought, you have the best year of the best SUV ever sold, to date in my opinion. My wife and I thought of upgrading to a newer vehicle. I started searching for a new replacement for the Runner about the time you made this video. After a year I told my wife to spend the money to replace her vehicle, if she wanted, because after driving mine since ‘13, I haven’t been able to find one that is worthy of replacing my ‘99! Truth. So I’m stuck with her for another several years and that makes me happy!

      This is because you’ve never owned a 3rd gen 4runner. Most vehicles, yes, 200k miles is scary. It’s not a big deal in a 3.4 4runner. There will be ongoing repairs, but they will be relatively cheap. And relatively easy for people who are willing to learn on their own. The cost of owning a high mileage 3rd gen 4runner even with needed repairs in tens of thousands of dollars cheaper than but a new, or ever newer vehicle
