Backup camera installation on a 2005 Ford Expedition XLS

  • The video documents installing a backup camera on the trim/bezel above the license place on a 2005 Ford Expedition XLS. It shows how to mount the camera to the bezel, how to run the wiring through the tailgate, and how to run the wires to the radio. The camera installed was a VTK230HD camera from BOYO Vision/Vision Tech. The display is a Kenwood DDX371 head unit which replaced the factory radio.
    To complete the installation you need a drill, drill bits, small gauge wire, automotive wires splices, and plastic trim removal tools. And you need patience and stamina! Good luck.

    Based on the level of difficulty, I think I'm going to add my camera near the hitch on my 2004 Navigator. I can run the wires through the left tail light area and avoid dealing with the hatch. Thanks for the video. PS, you can access the reverse power wire in the drivers kick panel. It should be a black/pink wire. 👍

    Thanks for the positive feedback. Super happy that the video has been helpful; I tried to show some of the details (wiring runs in particular) that I could not find on TH-cam when I was researching this project.
    The installation has held up well so far and the camera has been great. Only improvement I would suggest is putting locktite on the threaded rod on the bezel where the camera is installed before re-installing the bezel. There is a lot of vibration from opening and closing the tailgate and my trim/bezel loosened up a bit. Locktite on the threads fixed the problem.

      Great video and as far as I can tell the ONLY one to show the wiring runs. Guys assume eVeRyOnE does things the same way they do so why should they bother explaining it?
      Seriously - awesome video! Installing backup & rear dashcam in my Explorer tomorrow.

    Great job, whenever I run two wires together like this, I use speaker wire of the required gauge since it is one piece consisting of two wires. Just know which is ground and hot. Another simple tip and you can buy it in spools of various lengths.

    just to let you know you can also hook the radio up to the reverse light fuse under the dash...that way you don't need to run a wire all the way back to the tail lights

    This is a fantastic video. Although you really didn't need to do all that wiring or trim removal . You should of used a wireless camera with a transceiver. Also the wire that tells your radio your car is in reverse, you should of hooked that wire up to your reverse shift, there is a 12+ volt wire around near the shiftier in a car.. Doing it this way would helped you avoid all the trim removal and long wiring job within the car. Except for the trunk trim, you had no choice to take that off.

  • @shawnyoung5960

    Wow she went through a lot of work running the wires through it. I got mine going from the dashboard up the pillar along the windshield trim and running straight on back through in my headliner for my roof. Took less than a minute. To bad wiring it isn't as easy. My reverse light positives are always hot. My van grounds the ground wire when in reverse but it is always hot when not grounded by the computer.. You read that right a ground wire that is hot+ when not in reverse, when running or not.

    • @Acelachaser1965
      @Acelachaser1965 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shawn, the '03 and up Expedition/Navigator have side curtain air bags in the trim above the doors. That is why the wiring is under the floor trim.
      You definitely don't want to put anything in the way of air bags.

    • @amcoffee4me
      @amcoffee4me  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi DJ - The Boyo camera I used has a blue wire in a loop coming off the wiring harness that exits the camera itself. If that loop is intact, then the parking guides are part of the camera view. If the loop is cut, then the parking guide lines do not appear. I don't know what camera you have on your truck, or if it works the same way, but you might look for a loop of wire coming off the camera and connect the wires if they are currently disconnected. Look carefully in this picture from the BOYO site and you can just see the blue wire I am referring to. Best of luck.

    Hello I am writing from Costa Rica. I have a 2002 Ford Escape have a problem. I bought and installed a reverse camera that works with the radio. At the time of putting reverse, the camera is projected perfect, but when I put neutral or drive, the camera stays in that mode, not back to normal state of the radio, I think it's not the radio, rather it is a matter of current electric truck that does not allow off the power. I had to do is put a button power interruption to work, but not like as was.

    What secures the camera to the plastic piece on the truck? I just looked up the camera and it looks like there's only a threaded rod coming off the back of it.

    • @amcoffee4me
      @amcoffee4me  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Looks like they have changed the design on the camera from when I did mine. Mine came with a hole saw and the camera was essentially friction fit into the opening that you drilled with the included hole saw. Now it looks like the camera comes with a threaded rod and nut. You drill a hole to match the diameter of the threaded rod, put the rod through the hole, and on the inside, secure with the nut included with the camera. Probably saves the cost of the hole saw.

    • @tommymack8916

      Was the video wire with the yellow connector supplied with the camera and was it long enough to reach the back of the radio?
      Was there a plug end that connected it to the radio or did you have to splice into a wire from the radio?

    • @amcoffee4me
      @amcoffee4me  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you go to about 10 minutes on the video you can see and hear more about the video wiring. Yes the camera comes with about 19' of wire to connect the composite video signal coming from the camera to whatever your display is. That was not long enough for me to connect from the back of the Expedition to the front dash. I bought an extension video cable, one end male, one end female. That was probably a 6' cable.
      The back of my radio/head unit had an RCA type input for the backup camera and I just plugged the male end of the composite video cable into that - no splicing required.
