We went with Grass/Water Totartle to distinguish it from the other Water-types, it was otherwise just...really bland, and kind of pointless. It's a Minogame, an ancient 10,000 year old turtle with seaweed for a tail, so to me, it made sense. Considering Blastoise is one of the worst Water-types in the game, while Venusaur and Charizard are some of the best of their kind, it felt at least a bit appropriate. The Grass part takes most of the game to come up, and the weaknesses to each other remain the same, so...
just beat the E4 + some of the post game for this romhack last night and it's so good, makes me sad that it's going under the radar like it has because it's genuinely great and to me at least the definitive version of the gen 1 games
2 questions. Why no cross gen babies like Mine Jr? And why Meltan? I know it was in Lets Go, but I wouldn't consider it a gen 1 Pokemon or a evolution od any gen 1 pokemon
As I recall, the 8-bit integers used for Pokédex numbers means they cannot exceed 255 Pokémon in the Dex. And what with alternate forms requiring separate numbers, not all future Gen 1 family connected mons and beta mons could fit. I believe Plague Von Karma chose to excuse existing babies because they’re functionally superfluous from a gameplay experience, but babies we never got, like the earlier forms of Meowth and Vulpix, at least have some cool novelty.
@@ghozt3167 Either the code base by Gen II games was sturdier enough to make that issue not relevant, or the devs literally re-programmed Dex numbers to use integers above 8-but. Plague von Karma said elsewhere in these comments (paraphrasing) that they tried that here but it caused way too many knock-on effects due to how fragile the Gen I code is, and while it could have been solved, it would have taken far too much effort and was beyond their capabilities without bringing in more people.

Cool fangame and all, but I don’t understand why they cut all the existing baby Pokémon while they turn the Zubat and Magnemite lines 4-stage and give Pokémon like Meowth and Ponyta pre-evolutions.
Ran out of space - would have had to refactor the Pokemon into 16-bit IDs, which was beyond our skill level. There is a repository that did it, but the code was ~7 years out of date and a bit buggy. I believe it still needed a ROM to build a complete thing. We had to pick what to prioritise, and the Kanto Prototypes were a priority, rather than the notoriously hated Johto babies.
@@pilot_aki Not a developer, but did just beat it last week. You just go to cinnabar island and in the building where you revive fossils, there’s a npc who will do trade evolutions with you. You can get to the cinnabar by the fourth badge tbh

Gorillaimo is a beta Pokémon from the earliest known pitch for the original Pokémon. Not much is really known about it. As for the baby Pokémon, we ran out of space. RBY can only store a maximum of 254 Pokémon.
Cryithan was my favorite, in the original gen 1 it was a water dragon and had special attack it had a move called megafire and it killed everything fast 🤣

To maintain compatibility with Red, Blue and Yellow. In order to keep things closer to RBY, and also to allow battling and trading between them and KEP, we couldn’t change their types.

Since there is Mega Blastoise and Gigantamax Blastoise and they bring back Blastyke as the original pre-evolved form of Blastoise while they also bring back Totartle as the real final evolved form of Wartotle, what happened to Mega Totartle and Gigantamax Tortartle.

We prioritised cut Pokémon and evolved forms most of all, to give them a chance to appear in something. Since Coinpur was cut content, it got in over Pichu.
@@MarthaVsHumanity We would have seen Pikachu as an 4-stage evolution line if Pichu is added an starter pokemon and later in the journey, we evolved it into a Gorochu.

Blottle and Pendraken should have been called Calamenin and Inkraken.
Balumba should have been Bubaloon.
