The curious thing is that this leak doesn't have any beta sprites or concept art of Shellos and Gastrodon. It's already a known fact that they were going to be Pokémon from the 3rd generation, but they were cut and only returned with them in the 4th generation.
This clearly isn't EVERY beta design they made for the game--not nearly enough creatures. But Gastrodon was possibly made slightly later than these concepts, or these particular sprites were under the purview of a specific person and someone else had the Gastrodon sprites to work on. Maybe they moved the files for Gen 3 Gastrodon when they decided to implement it in Gen 4 and the originals were misplaced/moved to a storage location not in this leak. Many possible reasons why it's not here.

Most of the names are straight up Japanese(or mostly Japanese), I guess they always imagined their name and later in development considered changing their name into a "more international" one
We don't actually know if Lotad was supposed to evolve into Lombre at this point, though. Lombre lacks a lot of the details that link it to Lotad, looking more like a proper Kappa.
@@Faniwa828 No it doesn't, it was cut before Archeops was. Archeops was a 1 stage Fossil mon just like Aerodactyl when it was in Gen 3. It's sprite colors don't match it's concept art for right before it was cut. Also, I said Archeops on purpose because that sprite was Archeops and was later redesigned for Grovyle.
The Yin-Yang on the back sprite & the two-face thing on the front was removed on the later one. It's interesting that Absol looked like that before it was changed.
Absol being a ying yang pokemon before being a disaster pokemon is so great, i prefer the current design, but beta absol still have a place in my heart
A really cool fact about it is that it seemed to originally be connected to Pingin. Considering seals are natural predators to them irl and they were based off bowling pins..
Yeah, especially the blue one seen at 9:30 is most certainly the scrapped Gen 2 seal-plesiosaur starter that was replaced by Totodile, & not only almost made the cut here, was changed to possibly be Water/Grass in-game, with the art being the OG typing before getting scrapped again. The scrapped Gen 2 anchor shark at least made the cut, but not before getting downgraded. It possibly could be in Gen 8, but it's stuck as an abomination chimera made by the dumbhead, Cara Liss, being horrifically melded to a velociraptor or a dunkleosteus. 😢
Considering that it looks like it's wearing a mask and a robe and it's name could be a play on the word "riddle", I'm wondering if you were supposed to get it (perhaps as an egg) from one of the challenges in the trick house?
I'd argue that it has always made sense, which is why in this version they were probably at least related or just mistakenly placed apart. The latter seems more lokely considering nincada was apart from ninjask. Trapinch is the larvae of an amazing little insect called an antlion. The Larvae acts and looks pretty much like a trapinch, whilst the adults are a spitting image of flygon and act the same.Really fascinating insects and absolute menaces to ants when they're Larvae!
They are Leafeon and Mime Jr. were originally planned for Gen 2 Shellos was originally planned for Gen 3 (but it isn't in this leak) and that blue lizard thing here might be a beta Scraggy
@@socialistrepublicofvietnam1500That beta Grovyle is also beta Scrafty, beta Huntail's imitation fish tail became Gorebyss, the scrapped Tadpole design may have become the inspiration of Litwik, & the beta frog with the tongue scarf may have been reused for Greninja.
Woah, at one point Huntail had a Gorbyss-shaped tail! That makes its name make a ton more sense! Also, I'm so glad Flygon got redesigned from its initial form... it looked too much like Vibrava and it looks so odd without its head crest/spikes. o.o (also glad that Trapinch became its basic form because it led to one of my own personal Pokemon-related stories - the one where I gave up looking for a Flygon to complete my team and decided to catch the little orange antlion Pokemon that I'd just encountered to complete my team instead...)
Huntail does still have a Gorebyss shaped tail, it's just a lot less detailed--less 'Girafarig double-sided' and more like how an actual lure for prey would look on a sea creature. Flygon is such a baller design. Seeing a beta design is neat but it really was tuned basically perfectly.
@@SaerasChuu True, it's just a lot less obvious to me - seeing the beta with the more obvious Gorbyss tail makes it click for me. And Flygon will always be one of my favourite Dragon types for it's design and my afore-mentioned story. 😃
I laughed HARD at the comments on a couple of discarded designs labeled as "TOO HUMANOID". LMAO were are those people now with Lucario/Meowscarada and Quaquaval and Kirlia/Gardevoir/Armarouge?? 🤣🤦🏻♂
Oddly this was the gen where they tested to see if more humanoid designs were fine with the players. That's apparently why the Blaziken design was changed.
Hell, there's even the unused Cacophony ability to further hint at this, I wouldn't be surprised if Chimecho and the musical tadpole mons were supposed to be sound types Also the Spirit pokemon's leaked dex entry says it makes a xylophone-like sound, so that could've been planned to be Sound type too
1:01 Biblically accurate Woobat 5:18 They were supposed to evolve one more time!? We were so robed. At least there's Luxray that does the same thing. 7:06 Maybe that's why Altaria is a dragon type 7:31 I love this turtle :) 7:53 perhaps this was basically the first iteration of Togedamaru 8:02 Scraggy? 9:20 Haunter but whirlwind, I get why they redesigned it. 9:28 And then you have Castform that looks like a smurf. I'm not a fan, but at least it doesn't have those weird balls.
4:12 they always try to put a concept similar to girafarig but they always end up cutting them... Why? This is so cool, it's better than the ones we got at the end
Tbf, however ugly he is, Nosepass does have a pretty unique design concept, with the whole compass thing going on Though, he seems to have gotten scrapped for a while, since appearently, at one point in development after these sprites, Nosepass' slot was filled by a scrapped Torkoal preevolution My guess is that after the Black Stone pokemon got scrapped later in development, they looked though the old index where these leaks came from and got Nosepass because they needed a rock type mon to put on Roxxane's team (a lot of pokemon seem to have gotten scrapped and then reintroduced again, like Chimecho)
@@starlite_music-g1s oooooh I was just making a silly joke but that's quite interesting!! out of curiosity since there doesn't seem to be a beta design of it in this video, was there any other early concepts of poochyena found in the leak?? just out of curiosity (it's my fav pokemon lmaoooo)
@@RocketPooch Actually poochyena is an interesting one in this, everything about it is in the index, its dex data, stats, typing, height and weight, everything is there EXCEPT for the sprite Though, there is one thing about It that was found, an early version of its sugimori art where it looks more sad and is more hunched over, having a completely diferent pose, which interestingly seems to have been the base for the sprites in the final game and not the other way around as it usually was in gen 3 Yes I know i'm a big nerd when It comes to pokemon development
I'm really surprised that people are comparing Nobinyobi to Baltoy and not Komari. Komari really feels like an alternate Baltoy, what with the 'clay pottery' sort of design inspiration they share (though I love both of their designs). Also, Piyoko looks like a grass Tochic.
Ok, I'm not going to lie. A few of these look a hell of a lot cooler than the design we got, and some of the scrapped Pokemon look like ones that they would add to a future generation, and I kinda hope they do! Also, who else is with me when I say that beta Blaziken looks a lot like a fusion between itself and Latias?
It was known before all of the leaks that a "Latiken" or a Blaziken and Latias pokemon existed, you can search it on internet. And indeedie, it looks very cute with that design, makes me like it more than the actual Latias
we had concept art of early blaziken and im pretty sure it was confirmed in an interview that it split off into blaziken and latias, also it was the first gen 3 pokemon if i recall?
And I am more and more convinced they had Sound type in mind for gen 3, we need that BACK LIKE NOW!! Also, we were robbed of too many cool designs (even beta Meloetta was a great idea!) T__T
That's actually an evolution to the record player tadpole seen later in the index, It had nothing to do with Poliwhirl aside from looking kinda symilar
@@yoshibrothers9982 interesting, and understandable since it's pretty iconic. I know Blaziken, Munchlax, and bonsly were the first (corocoro, anime and XD Gale of Darkness, respectively)
Except they did, with modifications: Ninfu became Vespiquen, Purepasu became Drampa, Hipo possibly became Snom, Sunoun became Frosmoth, Zuruzu became Scraggy, Sunorora became Beartic, and Beta Sableye became Mega Sableye.
8:06 someone clearly messed up the Japanese on this one. The Japanese is very close to Archeops' Japanese name Archeos. Also, if you're wondering the sprite was obviously redesigned and used for Grovyle, but it was originally being made for Archeops.
Camerupt - improved Pelipper - looks more like a normal Pokémon now, but my god, is it a missed opportunity for Team Aqua with the old one. Nuzleaf - much more Tengu-like in the old one, but a bit too busy. Boyatto - weirdo, don't mind him gone Bi - why is Wingull there? Kurobosshi - no clue what it is, don't mind it gone. Azurill, Kecleon, Wailmer - all around minor improvements Lombre - HATE the old hair, so much improvement Seedot - more personality on the old one, but I prefer the new 'helmet' and colouring Surskit - the new spindly legs are much better than the weird rings Masquerain - why the hell is the old one in this weird like seedpot-cocoon? Sableye - much prefer the new one, it is the more interesting and clear design Sharpedo - the scrapped design rocks Claydol - the colour change is for the good Toroika - I like it, and let's be honest, even with tons of water types, the regions waters can still feel a bit samey, so I would have loved him Ubausagi - pretty bland bunny, what's with the beans in the grass on its back? Doesn't feel connected, don't miss it Nobinyobi - almost looks more like a preevolution to the old Lombre? Shroomish - the old one is kinda very bland Bisukyaru - weird little thing, I think I don't like it? Kanbokku - almost looks like a beta Bonsly? Komari - kinda cute, I like it Monorabi - knock off eeveelution looking weirdo Sutanbu - a tree stump, clearly, and still I wonder what the hell I am looking at Rikugin - a bit too colourful, clearly looks like a beta Lileep/Cradily Arei - depressed Suicune meets Milotic? I don't like it much Keromero - what a cutie Kodomin - is it odd that I like them? Mosumi - a moss Pokemon? Swablu - has improved Banette - has improved Puchi - hate it Breloom - massively improved Kujatta - just kinda a normal Peacock, but I want one Wynaut, Duskull, Trapinch - very minor changes, basically all improved Shakokaku - why is Dusclops here? It doesn't look anything close to being related to Beta Duskull Blaziken - I like the old colours more Roselia, Chimeco - basically no change, all improved Nincada - looove the new one, but the old munchers are so cute too and give it a run for its money. Penpin - oooh, fun Spheal - much improvement Swalot - minor improvement Tropius - the old one is sooo ugly, big improvement Ribura - very cool, miss it Furane - hmmm Clamperl - love both, the old one is a mencace and I kind like it more. Huntail - always cool, like the new one more (cleaner), but the old backsprite showing off the tailtip is superior Hakkeyo - kinda cute Makuhita - prefer the new colours Hariyama - prefer the new design Utoma - quite funny Pyokko - kinda cute, but odd Ninfu - too busy
Purepasu - intriguing, but no Skitty - the new one looks not like a drug addict and trip at the same time anymore Numel - just cleaned up Kajitto - kinda cute Electike - the new one is better Manectric - the old one was cooking something Raiou - complete mess Berumusu - better than Abomasnow, that's for sure Ninjask - what changes? Shedinja - the new one is cleaner, but the old, horrific one is more interesting Lotad - cute, prefer the new one Spinda, Lunatone - only some clean up Lairon - the old one is cool, love the pop of colour, the new one is more interesting apart from that though Hipo - that... exists, I guess? Why? Chamin - thank god we got Happiny instead of this freak Pippa - so bland it might as well be a stick figure Sunoun - cool, just really cool Bonbongo - horrific, burn it with fire Shiomagune - soooo fucking cool Tochin - derpy, what is it? why does it kinda look like a bong? Spoink - big improvements with the new one Grumpig - the new one is more visually pleasing, but the old one was kinda cooking, the horrific cooked pigs head with the apple in its mouth?? Poku, Tanpu - what the heck is that? Absol - the new one is more subtle, I like that Paotsu - I kinda like it Suiba - what is it? why is it? Rairai - no. Why the noodle body? Nosepass - much cleaner now
Shuppet - basically no changes Shabo - no clue in the world what this freak is, good that it's gone Panpamu - kinda fun Hakogame - feels kinda disjointed, but I like it Latias, Latios - basically no change Togepyon - what are its eyes in this mess? Zigzagoon - oh fuck, they messed up, give me back this cutie patootie! Zuruzu - funny, seems repurposed into Scraggy? Akeon - Grovyle is cooler Eidoggu - fine, but kinda bland and shapeless Uezari - what is it? Kinda intrigued Tinki - kinda fun, and would make the waters more diverse Relicanth - the old ones face looks so wrong Sunorora - odd stance, but otherwise fine Yakkoko - sooo cute Vibrava - the old one looks a tiny bit more fierce, but I love both equally Flygon - thank god they did something with the weird, ugly smooth head, new Flygon is soo much better, although the old colour scheming is much closer to Vibrava Heppi, Supanku - they bother me somehow; did they just put Vulpix where they might have put this one? Riridi - I like it, I am very intrigued, but the older one is better Kurumi - this is sooo odd, but so funny Sansan - almost better than sun Castform Zaza - sooo much worse than rain Castform Gogo - interesting, but much worse than hail Castform Castform - soooo much better now, why was it a living smurf hat and forehead before? The backsprite could literally be one for a smurf
Wow. The siren looking seal was the og Sun and Moon starter. So is the frog with a orange tongue around it's neck. Fascinating. Rubara (bird with book for wings) is probably the concept that eventually became the Aplin line. Teruzu(sp?) Lizard with skin around legs also made a return later on.
1. I think chamin, hakogame, and paotsu are supposed to be happiny, torkoal, and Zangoose respectively. 2. Breloom and Flygon got upgraded 3. Castform and its forms, Nuzleaf, Sharpedo, Shedinja, and Huntail got downgraded 4. I find beta Absol more memorable than the official version but I am lowkey glad that the yin-yang concept got revisted to a serperior degree with Zekrom and Reshiram 5. Beta Altaria makes 1000% more sense as a dragon than the official version 6. Utoma was definitely suppose to evolve into Keromero. Clever use of the music theme 7. Beta Scraggy was going to evolve into Beta Grovyle? Huh. You learn something new 8. I always felt like Spheal was a lazy design, but with Penpin now its design is a bit more witty. 9. good for them.
2:05 looks like an early version of Cradily
Love how the idea of sableye hiding behind a jewel got reused for his mega
6:54 Now i understand Absol’s design
The Yin-Yang on the back sprite & the two-face thing on the front was removed on the later one. It's interesting that Absol looked like that before it was changed.
Absol being a ying yang pokemon before being a disaster pokemon is so great, i prefer the current design, but beta absol still have a place in my heart
7:01 this mf looks like it came straight out of pony town
3:41 THE OLD SPRITE IS SO GOOFY I LOVE HIM
I can't believe my guy used to be monochromatic
he basically looks like a regular ass seal 😭
A really cool fact about it is that it seemed to originally be connected to Pingin. Considering seals are natural predators to them irl and they were based off bowling pins..
1:29 i like this one could stay in game
I swear there’s always a Plesiosaur that gets cut every gen lmfao.
I'm pretty sure that this one eventually ended up becoming Drampa.
9:01 ohhh this one is actually great
this one sucks ass tf you mean
I really like Riridi‘s design too!
Considering that it looks like it's wearing a mask and a robe and it's name could be a play on the word "riddle", I'm wondering if you were supposed to get it (perhaps as an egg) from one of the challenges in the trick house?
Nope.

Or Mareanie.
Beta Zigzagoon looks straight out of Kirby’s Dream Land 3
7:56 bro, this zigzagoon looks like something from kirby Dreamland 3
And it have some goofy ass name like “Billy” or something
0:17 So THAT is what it's called: Boyatto
It reminds me to "Warwolf" from the Pokémon Gold Beta.
3:17 theres definitely some Latias DNA in Blaziken's beta
Trapinch evolving into Vibrava suddenly makes a whole lot of sense: It was never supposed to!
Why would an antlion larva turning into an adult antlion not make sense?
Wait, why are you concluding that based on the video? They are in different number position and the design doesn’t match: the colors, design, etc…
When
When you're wrong
@@Absol-cy9gznah trapinch wasn't supposed to evolve to vibrava and it was just made an evolution to it because the developers wanted it to
4:11 so Gorebyss and Huntail would have been one originally?
Somehow, I'm convinced that beta & scrapped mons often serve either as inspirations for or are reused as later mons
They are
Leafeon and Mime Jr. were originally planned for Gen 2
Shellos was originally planned for Gen 3 (but it isn't in this leak)
and that blue lizard thing here might be a beta Scraggy
@@socialistrepublicofvietnam1500That beta Grovyle is also beta Scrafty, beta Huntail's imitation fish tail became Gorebyss, the scrapped Tadpole design may have become the inspiration of Litwik, & the beta frog with the tongue scarf may have been reused for Greninja.
6:59 Guessing this is beta Zangoose, but it also resembles Obstagoon. That might be why they gave the design to the Zigzagoon line
@@amandamakin1542I'm sure Merokero and the tadpole were redesigned for the Seismitoad line
@@BrokenValentine-333It was apparently a cut evo for Spinda. (Or the Pokémon that preceeded it)
Woah, at one point Huntail had a Gorbyss-shaped tail! That makes its name make a ton more sense!
Also, I'm so glad Flygon got redesigned from its initial form... it looked too much like Vibrava and it looks so odd without its head crest/spikes. o.o
(also glad that Trapinch became its basic form because it led to one of my own personal Pokemon-related stories - the one where I gave up looking for a Flygon to complete my team and decided to catch the little orange antlion Pokemon that I'd just encountered to complete my team instead...)

Then in the very next gen they released Lucario and Lopunny, Lucario probably unintentional but Lopunny is just taking the piss
@@bluegum6438ahh, lopunny… 🥰
Gardevoir wasn't supposed to even look humanoid, if you look at it's original sprite it's clearly just a paper figure
I think there is a difference - these humanoid ones look just bland and humanoid, while your actual examples have a clear non-human origin to it.
We missed out on a peacock Pokemon!?
I mean we now have quaqaval but it's more like part peacock and part duck/seagull
It even looks like Kurumi (at 9:06) is the baby form; the tail feathers look a lot like the smaller blue feathers found on Kujatta (at 2:50)
And also a book bird!

With what appear to be all these music and sound themed pokemon, perhaps they were dabbling with the idea of introducing a sound type.
Hell, there's even the unused Cacophony ability to further hint at this, I wouldn't be surprised if Chimecho and the musical tadpole mons were supposed to be sound types
Also the Spirit pokemon's leaked dex entry says it makes a xylophone-like sound, so that could've been planned to be Sound type too
I thought of Bonsley when I saw the tree. It's expression is similar and has the weep holes
5:30 Beta Shedinja would've haunted everyones dreams for sure

How did I never notice that Absol's face kind of looks like the yin and yang?
I will protect Pippa with my life... also you're telling me that out of all the scrapped pokemon, NOSEPASS managed to make it?!
Tbf, however ugly he is, Nosepass does have a pretty unique design concept, with the whole compass thing going on
Though, he seems to have gotten scrapped for a while, since appearently, at one point in development after these sprites, Nosepass' slot was filled by a scrapped Torkoal preevolution
My guess is that after the Black Stone pokemon got scrapped later in development, they looked though the old index where these leaks came from and got Nosepass because they needed a rock type mon to put on Roxxane's team (a lot of pokemon seem to have gotten scrapped and then reintroduced again, like Chimecho)
@@RocketPooch Actually poochyena is an interesting one in this, everything about it is in the index, its dex data, stats, typing, height and weight, everything is there EXCEPT for the sprite
Though, there is one thing about It that was found, an early version of its sugimori art where it looks more sad and is more hunched over, having a completely diferent pose, which interestingly seems to have been the base for the sprites in the final game and not the other way around as it usually was in gen 3
Yes I know i'm a big nerd when It comes to pokemon development
@@starlite_music-g1s noooo that's super cool, ty for the info!! where exactly do I find that artwork you're talking about? :0
Some of these sports look like something from Quartz
Ok, I'm not going to lie. A few of these look a hell of a lot cooler than the design we got, and some of the scrapped Pokemon look like ones that they would add to a future generation, and I kinda hope they do! Also, who else is with me when I say that beta Blaziken looks a lot like a fusion between itself and Latias?
It was known before all of the leaks that a "Latiken" or a Blaziken and Latias pokemon existed, you can search it on internet.
And indeedie, it looks very cute with that design, makes me like it more than the actual Latias
Doubt they will honestly... 8:53 and 9:00 were pretty cool. Also Sharpedo 1:10 looked better in its first design

4:45 we have been robbed!!!!! Purepasu is such a cool pokemon concept, if only they made use of all of these pokemon
Beta "Blaziken" was called Elhawk when moved to other slot
For 20 yearold designs, I'm impressed they never reused some of the new Pokémon. It's crazy to see most of of these after going over 1000 Pokémon now.

And Heppi clearly became Zorua.

6. Utoma was definitely suppose to evolve into Keromero. Clever use of the music theme
7. Beta Scraggy was going to evolve into Beta Grovyle? Huh. You learn something new
