Callas" voice is almost unrecognisable here, singing a repertoire that suits her. She doesn't push and the voice sparkles. Rossini singing par excellence. Hardly any sign of the wobble or hole in the middle that too often spoils her dramatic roles. And her gutsy Fiorilla has spunk!

After 1953 or so, the voice got thinner and thinner. Caballe was really pushing her voice in some early Devereux performances, you can hear the breaks and by her own admission, got scared by the heaviness of Maddalena. Yet, she couldn’t make her voice sound "big". Her voice to me grew between 1971-74. But the stomach tumour surgery must have affected the diaphragm because the top became squally after 1975. She was experienced enough to make her voice sound bigger by then. So, to answer your question more precisely, until 1953 Callas sounds bigger, post 1953 Callas sounds thinner. What do you think?
