Most of those problems seemed to just be because Google Drive's file system doesn't support specific features that Linux requires. The solution to this is obvious: make a regular ext4 image, store that on Google Drive, mount the Google Drive filesystem, and then mount the ext4 image off of that and use it to boot.
I know that was my first idea when I tried to boot off an external NTFS drive.

i planned to learn machine learning and i would've need colab for that. google will probably find about this too and decide to ban people left and right so anyone that's gonna test this out, don't do it in your main account.

I did actually get this setup to boot both windows and linux, but on linux there were lots of permission issues due to ntfs not supporting unix permissions. I then later tried again with btrfs instead, but the software that makes it possible to boot windows off btrfs doesn't seem to work with the latest windows versions anymore so I scratched that idea as well (for now at least, might try again at some point in the future)

The real problem with using Google Drive is that Google have a tendency to deprecate products and services unexpectedly which is slightly inconvenient if Google Drive is retired while you are waiting for your computer to boot.

My first Linux experience was running a (downloaded with a 115kbaud modem) root floppy disk and boot it using a NFS root in some Caltech server. (I'm from Barcelona). That was in 1991 or 1992.
Painfully slow, but usable after some time if you had enogh memory.
In fact it was a popular option to try it "live". You could not download a CDROM from internet at modem speeds so there was no other way to do a quick try.
My first disk install of linux downloaded the packages from FTP because I didn't had a compatible CD.

You know, it might not be in the spirit of the task at hand, or maybe it is but... what if you implemented it as a tiered storage solution? You'd still have a local SSD, but it would be used as a local cache/buffer, rather than as an actual drive. That way, the PC might actually be fast, while at the same time having backup functionality being implemented natively into the file system (versioned backups even, if using gitfs)

Loop back mount the two things on the google drive and then united them together and chroot onto the result.
