I haven't even used my SD card reader on my Ally. I updated the ssd and called it a day. Asus reimbursing broken SD cards isn't them going above and beyond. They're dodging legal issues over their product breaking components. You're giving too much credit there.
Bought my Ally on launch day. Never used the SD card, as I started hearing of issues pretty early on. Once the 2280 drives became compatible, it didn't even make sense to use an SD card given they are slower and more expensive than 2280 SSDs of the same capacity.
yes! my warranty extended for 1 more year in myAsus app.. sd card keep failing (maybe the reader is burned) so i decided to purchase separate 170MBps sd card reader to load my game from sd card instead using internal sd card reader. i'll try to contact asus service center to ask it can repair my sd card reader
Check and make sure the location of the sd card didn’t vanish.. I updated crate app and my sd card wasn’t showing up..Come to find out it lost its location and I switched it to (D) and it read it .. I was so happy it started working again I thought o had a broker sd slot..
I have three ally. They all failed. Asus rep said is unfixable base on the design of the motherboard. Get ready to RMA ALL THE TIME. They have to change the motherboard and front plate to get the sd card reader to work perfectly.
Sent mine in for sd reader repair. It came back with the fingerprint reader not working. They should have to give us the Ally X because there is no fix for the reader on the first Ally.
I have had no issues. I only added a 2 TB SSD in the past 3 months and haven't used the SD for anything other than media storage since. Prior to that, however, I did use it for game installation and had no issues. I bought my Ally at release.

My reader still works from day one launch day. I also hate sd cards. They’ve never been reliable. I’ve had data loss and corruption for many years ever since sd cards came out. They suck. The transfer speeds aren’t fast like I went and the prices aren’t the best for anything 1tb or larger. It’s more cost effective to get a 2tb nvme and enjoy
Yea for games it’s no biggie cloud saves keep the saves and if the game download gets fried swap the card and redownload I have 500 down and up takes 5 minutes and sd card swaps are so easy compared to internal storage but I got 2tb in mine now cause my sd slot died a month after launch
Hi all, what is everyone's experience when proceeding with the repair service for the Ally when purchased through curry's either from curry's or asus in the UK? I have heard experiences from the US with devices being returned with extra issues, I have a hardware issue with my left speaker which occasionally cuts out in gaming sessions throughout the day but I am unsure whether to proceed with the repair/RMA service due to the negative feedback. Any comments would be very much appreciated
anyone got issues using Sandisk Ultra A1 512gb? or any sandisks in particular? I bought mine Brand new(R8) and my sandisk(also brand new) didnt work. Tho, it works on other things(sd card reader, Android phone, dock).
My first ally had a fried reader. Took it back got a brand new one. Second time I used the SD card reader it literally made my whole computer crash. While not reading lol. I just never used the reader again and got an external one.
I had a Sandisk Extreme card for roughly 8m still sealed as I was too scared to put it in after all the media attention this issue got. I then finally decided to give it a go thinking what's the worst that can happen now after a few bios updates and adjustments to fan Curves perhaps Asus have stopped it happening. This was a huge mistake as within my first night of gaming from the card just running emulation so thermals were low, the card burnt out and stopped reading all together. Luckily Amazon allowed me to send the card back for a refund even though I was well over the return period. I've continued to use my Ally as normal because I honestly can't be bothered with the long process of sending it for RMA in the UK especially if it doesn't fully address the issue. Don't think I'll consider the Ally 2 as much as I love the device.
Thanks for sharing Sterling, I'm like you in that I haven't sent mine in for RMA due to making content for this channel and also can't be bothered like you say with the potentially long process that may not stop it from happening again in the future...
@PeteTalksTech nice to know you're in the same boat. It's very frustrating not having access to SD cards, but in the future, i might just consider changing the internal drive on this over buying a completely new device as its more than powerful enough for the games I play. I was tempted to send for RMA to break again and request a consumer law refund with my retailer though p

My ssd just broke 8 moths later but Asus replace the moderboard and refound the broken ssd card so they pay me 150€ that cost the ssd the card sandisk 1Tb ultra the back one, so I’m happy with that 🙌🏼

I got the cheaper ally i typically see my temps go between the 80s and 90s and i run the majority of my games off the sd and no failure yet but i did get the r9 model the latest im aware of

I could see my sd card in disk management but not on side .. I had to put the new location and it read it..
I had one fried on 10watts just copying files to it. I just do not use it. I have a Sharge Disk unit with 1TB M2 that works amazing... so, I do not use SD cards on it at all.
My readers got damaged about 3 weeks later after purchase. I considered asking for warranty but now I'm afraid they extort me like they did to Steve from Gamers Nexus. That was real shitty behavior from the company Asus.
I have my ROG ally like week now I just buy it from QVC 500$.I don’t have any issues past week well yes for games but when updates come long it kind fix some gaming issues what I mean crashing freezing in games
I have never had any problems with my SD card reader maby because when i first bought it, i noticed that my sd card was extremely hot, so I adjusted the fan curve so that the left fan runs faster on lower and medium temperatures. Maby thats why its been nearly a year now that mine havent fried.

I gave up on Asus. They didn't even recall the devices from Best Buy in 2024 so I got a bad device... Considering they added the XG port just to sell us an overpriced mobile GPU speaks volumes about the kind of service we're getting. I'm avoiding ASUS all together, very poor quality control.
I still haven't had any issues with mine. I think most returns were perfect working condition machines but the negative press at the beginning scared people. Plus lots of people returned them because they weren't knowledgeable with windows
@@prydepythons - Nah, I'm a techie. I didn't believe the negative press either until I bought one myself a month ago. I checked command prompt for disks, tried multiple SDcards, none were found. It's an issue with the chip on the mother board that overheats on turbo mode. You might've gotten a newer unit or don't use turbo mode.
@@cybershellrev7083 I did get mine on release day. I've accidentally left it running in a zipped case twice since then where it overheated to to point where my screen blacked out with ink blobs but it still works fine with zero issues, knock on wood

0 issues, got mine since launch use it daily I just avoid 30W at all cost and play a custom 21w with custom fan curves and stay below 75c

I've had 0 issues but I just added a 2 TB 2230 so I wouldnt have to worry about it

Mine SDCard reader also died recently, on R9 Ally, after month of usage. Not extensive, usually 1-2 hours a day, at 15W.
