  • FIRST DRIVE: The Crosstrek gets a major redesign from Subaru. The Cross Trek competes with the Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Kona, Honda HR-V and Toyota Corolla Cross. On the outside you will discover new 17in wheels, aluminum fenders, grill and roof rack. On the inside there is an 11.6in infotainment screen, cloth seats and heated seats. Under the hood is a 2.0L flat-4 that produces 152HP. Is the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek a better SUV to buy than a Toyota Corolla Cross?

I prefer the halogen headlight lights because we can always add HID kits or color choices to replace them. LEDs have a distance limitation and a noticeable blue hue in the white light.

Subaru has always been known to cut corners in a lot of areas; head gaskets, turn signal bulbs, plastic everywhere, no true premium feel, even with the Touring XT trims

It's too bad they discontinued the manual transmission, and I don't like the 11" screen. I like analog displays, controls, switches and buttons, and I like a manual transmission. Still, it looks like they made some improvements. I have a 2023 Crosstrek with a manual transmission that I plan to keep for a while.

Subaru discontinued the manual transmission because no one was buying a Crosstrek with a manual - didn't make economic sense to keep offering it. The 11" screen has been getting better through updates, but I agree with you that some of the controls should return to physical switches and dials in the next generation.

    • @himanshuwinnipeg

Agreed! I need to replace my old manual Crosstrek and tried to find a 2023 manual model last year, when I found out that the 2024 models are all automatic, but no dice. They were selling off the boat like hotcakes before they even made it to the US. The dealers here started buying up all the 1-2 year old used manual Crosstreks and selling them at MSRP, too. Insanity!
The only reason I have a Subaru was the manual transmission. I am now looking at other brands. Really too bad.

I want a real cam carrier seal gasket instead of janky RTV/Fujibond or whatever. I want 4DS direct plus port injection engine technology to avoid upper engine carbon build up. And, I don't want to have to win the engine lottery to get one that doesn't burn oil. Those three things would make the decision a much easier one.

I can understand why people would want a Corolla cross. It’s reliable, frugal and less costly than its better equipped and moderately bigger cousin, the Rav 4. BUT I couldn’t help notice how blend and sterile the Corolla cross is, in terms of performance and it’s cabin. Just couldn’t get over the fact that I have to sacrifice my expectations for a rather unexciting and uninspiring Toyota.
Now Subaru is a different beast altogether. Great performance, excellent instrumentation and spacious well appointed cabin.
The only thing making me hesitant about buying one is the well documented reliability issues (CVT, oil burn, oil leaks, blown gaskets, wheel bearings, etc).
Hopefully, they would have addressed all that.

Eliminating all the physical controls and incorporating them into the gigantic touch screen is cost cutting at its worst. Reaction time is slower using touch screens and is a safety issue since you need to take your eyes of the road longer than using physical controls. A bit. Note the 23s listed price is manual, you need to add 1350 for the CVT. Also, destination fee (~1300). Reviewer price of 29k does seem high compared to other sites that list it at like 27.4k (maybe the review car is 29k with options).

My 2013 Crosstrek has 160,000 miles on it, and it has never gotten close to the EPA sticker even when new, more like 21 mpg around town. (My 2006 Audi A3 always has always gotten 32 MPG plus so I know it isn't my driving style.) When I bought the Crosstrek, there was no shortage of other buyers complaining about the mileage also. Those comments miraculously disappeared. I'm looking at a Cross Hybrid as it literally gets double the mileage and I've never read anything bad about the EPA mileage on a Toyota vehicle.

I wish the whole lineup was made in Japan, or at least I wish the higher trims were made in Japan. For such a large vehicle, the 2.5L really should be the standard engine and we really need a turbo option and a strong hybrid option. It is too much to ask for based on the price. The Forester is only $1k more which is part of the problem. Idk if the base engine needs to be the more powerful one. The base is still faster than anything else in the class. They’re also not going to make faster versions since better handling versions already exist in impreza and wrx form. If you want truly good handling you want to be lower to the ground not raised in a crossover.

Also looking at the 2024 Corolla Cross but Hybrid XSE version and will compare that model to the Crosstrek Limited when I visit both dealers in a couple of months. Also considering the redesigned Kona Limited (driving a 2022 Kona now) so for me, it's which model will become available when I need it, and how much will the final cost be, without dealer markups to ruin the sale.

Make an actual sport model with a manual transmission, a turbo'd engine, stiffer suspension and lower it a little to make it a fun sporty hatchback. Or 2. Give us an offroaders option with offroad tires, offroad suspension, skid plates and a better transmission that that garbage cvt.

in 2012 the redesigned impreza brought new soft materials to the dashboard and upper door trim. I dont like the departure from that to hard plastic especially since this is supposed to be a new improved model. I have a 2015 impreza premium and to me the 2012 to 2016 impreza was the best impreza ever made. The dash was beautiful with a smooth flowing design.
I also dont like how big the infotainment systems are getting. Does anyone really need all that electronic gear to drive? People already spend too much time on phones and now screens in cars too is more than anyone needs. Getting rid of physical buttons to control air flow is pointless and a hassle. I may be old fashioned at age 39 but I still like having a cd player. I might have to buy the outgoing impreza model and store it in my garage for once my 2015 is too high mileage before all the good old days are gone for good on brand new cars.
Subaru should build some good seat belt latches for dogs too since it markets dog friendliness. I have my beloved shepherd dog that rides in my 2015 subaru hatch back and I wish there was a seat belt latch for him.
If possible subaru should make the cvt transmission fluid as easy to change as the engine oil.
Subaru should also make the glove box key independent of the engine start key so when the car is at a dealer for service the technicians cant be going through your belongings.
My message to subaru is I love my 2015 subaru please dont change the cars so radically. Loyal brand owners don't want big changes. My favorite feature on my 2015 impreza is the click adjust headrest. It is a feature most expensive cars dont have that is great for my neck comfort. I also think the 2012 to 2015 had great interior styling and high quality materials. Other strong points on the impreza I own are a gas tank of over 500 miles of range and very good fuel economy.
One flaw I noticed on my car that is not a common complaint is that in cold weather I can feel a light bit of cold air flow in from the door handle aperture. Better insulation or sealing would be good.

I would choose an ICE Subaru Crosstrek over an ICE Toyota Corolla Cross any day, but would also choose an ICE Mazda CX-30 over either of those (more refined, mature looking, better driving dynamics, Nice looking 100% LED lights, & no crappy belt/chain design CVT). Love my 2022 CX-30 CE & zero problems/issues after 17 months thus far (unlike my awful 2020 J-VIN Toyota Corolla Sedan experience for 2 years).

I recently traded my 2021 touring Outback XT for a 2023 Genesis GV70.. main gripes were the CVT whine and jerky performance under spirited acceleration.. the 11 inch display had moments where it rebooted without a definite trigger and issues moving iPhone in and out of car when on calls. The Harmon Kardon amplifier also failed after i months .. otherwise I was ok with Subaru .. the crosstrek also needs ventilated seats for hot climates
