- The Crosstrek Wilderness is new from Subaru for 2024. On the outside you will find a rugged body, with 17in wheels wrapped in off-road tires and raised roof rails. On the inside you will be greeted by a Wilderness specific interior and 11.6in infotainment system screen. Under the hood is a 2.5L flat-4 producing 182HP & mated to a CVT transmission. Is the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness a better SUV than a Toyota RAV4 TRD?

Hey everyone appreciate you all for tuning in for my brand new Crosstrek Wilderness. I do agree with some comments with it needing a bit more power and a manual would have probably been perfect for my driving preferences. For those who dislike the cladding it’s quite functional for any sort of damage you might sustain off-roading all those panels are fully replaceable without needing to touch any of the sheet metal/sapphire blue. Since the functionality is there I don’t mind it on this specific trim. The serviceability on this motor is top notch as almost everything is very accessible in the bay outside of the spark plugs. The CVT and generally exploding transmission might bring you some future sadness. But I do like the look.

Subaru did a good job on the Crosstrek Wilderness.
I think it’s the best looking out of the 3 of them.
Just traded in our 21 Premium for a 24 Wilderness Crosstrek in Pearl white. What an upgrade!!!! Beautiful car and like always great review!

I was just talking smack about how most cars of today have a super glued iPad on the dash and then you show off this car! At least they made an attempt at making the center screen integrated into the dash! Well done, Subaru!

The same thing happened to me last year! I saw one driving by and I knew they were just released so I decided to look it up, and earlier that same day all the auto review youtubers uploaded videos on the new Crosstrek! I'm assuming Subaru had just released the car that day, that would make sense

The Crosstrek Wilderness absolutely destroys the RAV4 TRD. I know this as I've personally driven both. The Crosstrek is suchhh a better vehicle in every single domain!!!

I've driven like 6 or 7 different vehicles in heavy snow growing up in the mountains and snowboarding, and the Crosstrek destroys every other vehicle including two previous gen Outbacks I owned. Was that a plug-and-play upgrade or did you have to add anything to prevent the fast flash issue that sometimes happens with LED upgrades?
I bought a 24 Crosstrek Sport and absolutely love it. What a smooth driving vehicle and fun. I'm amazed I got something this nice for 28k. There's no wonder these are so popular.

New Crosstrek is surprisingly more spacious up front than new RAV4 while being much cheaper. Great city hatchback replacement.

@@JoeMACofNAC I drove a new Crosstrek two years ago and I liked it way more than WRX. It drove much more comfortable and refined, extra height added to overall comfort. It is small overall, but fine as a daily commuter.

As far as the crosstrek sport is concerned, in the paperwork its listed as a sports utility wagon, and its basically a lifted impreza. Really good car
Watched a ton of reviews: best for winter, good on gas, ground clearance, cost, maintenance etc. Subaru crosstrek kept popping up. Ended up buying wilderness which had Alpine green which is wilderness specific in Canada. Looks amazing. Rugged looking. Guns mounted on it would look appropriate.
It looks like a battle tank! Some cannons would be nice.

Had two cross treks a few years ago! Loved the cars but unfortunately got sick of the lack of power. Would really like a turbo in it
Turbo would be nice. It’s killer in the OBW
This vehicle is peak Subaru to me. Out of everything else in their line up this still has the spirit of old Subaru. I do think Subarus have gotten pricey but this is a great entry suv and off roader.

Nice looking vehicle and great color. No turbo means less power but should be more reliable long term.
I'm making a final decision this week on buying a Lithium Red Pearl one. Honestly, it checks alot of boxes for me, even though power is a little lagging. It's going to be an urban-jungle navigator for me, I live in the Midwest. I've owned Subarus for 20 years now, and the CTW is everything you should like about driving a Subie, within the law! (yeah, WRX people!)
I bought a Crosstrek wilderness, I’m wondering Steven, do you find you’re having any issues with the touch screen being a bit slow? And if so what do you recommend ? Other than that, I LOVE my Crosstrek wilderness. Everyone comments how beautiful it is.

If any of you are in the market for a vehicle like this I urge you… give these new Subaru’s a chance!!! I just traded in my TRD Pro 4Runner for an Outback Wilderness and I am absolutely blown away at how amazing it is. Unfortunately the crosstrek doesn’t get the turbo but it’s still a great vehicle. I wouldn’t rock crawl with these without major mods but this and the Outback will take you to any normal trail that 99.9% of us go to without sacrificing on road comfort. And these vehicles aren’t absurdly overpriced like… Toyotas…

They are separate models but they share almost all of the sheet metal, powertrains and the internal/external dimensions are nearly identical. I own a ‘24 Wilderness & have sold the brand for eight years.
I want this version of the cross track
I was initially considering getting this Sapphire Blue color for my WRX, but it looks different in different lighting in person. Sometimes it looks cool deep navy blue, while others it looks almost purple. And I really didn't like the purple. I just went with World Rally Blue instead.

I don’t mind the flat black since this is a wilderness trim but Subaru put way too much. It’s a bit overkill on this. Just needs to reduce some. Overall nice car Steven! Congrats!
Yeah it works on the wilderness for me. On the street trims I do agree it’s a bit extreme on the cladding.
Stephen, great purchase man, love the Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness. But brother, I sure hope you didn't have to trade in your 2017 Civic Type R baby that you modded cause that was a keeper. 😮 Either way, I like the purchase man 😎
Thanks Chris! I wish I could have afforded to keep both in the stable because I certainly would have. I needed the versatility this crosstrek offered and it was very much a one or the other situation. The type R will certainly not be my last performance car with a manual I can assure you of that!

I feel a sense of regret buying the Forester Wilderness. There aren't many people doing upgrades on it, except this model and outback.
I thought about the forester wilderness but ended up getting the OBW due to it having more space and that awesome turbo. That extra power really helps. But you still got a great vehicle.
@@dbunch904 Yeah, I should've gotten the OBW, too. My sister just got one, and my buddy from high school just sold his corvette to get a OBW. Darn it. I just want the turbo. I had a turbo vehicle before and it feels awesome. XT was the last FW that was turbo charged.
@dbunch904 I have my '22 OBW and its been awesome. Had it for almost 3 years now. Pretty decent fuel mileage and plenty of space for things. No problems. Love the rear vents for heat and AC. Bonus is the heated rear seats too. Looked at a 4Runner but the gas mileage was gonna be worse and it was more of a step up to get in.
The headrests was a dealbreaker for me. Felt like an 80s Volvo.
I really wish they offered the Crosstrek Wilderness in the Solar Orange Pearl. Great review as usual, Joe.

I'd have a tough time imagining a Forester Wilderness with the 2.4T. The Crosstrek with a 2.4T would be a banzai machine!

I had a Honda accord. And I’m so glad that I upgraded to a Subaru Crosstrek. I think you’ll love it! You could or should go look and do a test drive just to see if you like it.
of Ultraman got a car as his daily driver, this could be it. off-road, reliable, cool techs.
I on a Crosstrek and so does my mother. She bought hers after loving mine. Would’ve got a wilderness, but the ugly yellow just has to go. I even told the dealership that. I had a green one picked out, but the yellow just doesn’t go. Correct that and my next crosstrek will be wilderness.
I just purchased a new Crosstrek Wilderness in the Alpine Green (I’ve been calling it Military Green)…and I’m loving it so far. I really don’t care for the gold trim in the bumper and on the base of the roof rack. I believe I’m gonna have those wrapped in an old school green and black camo design…I think that’ll go really well with the shade of green. Eventually I’m gonna swap out the tires for a pair of meatier Faulkner Wildpeak AT4W’s.

Beautiful car, absolutely love the color. The cladding has grown on me. The front end lights look expensive if/when they burn out. I have a 19 premium 2.0 and that was before the wilderness and the sport. Been very happy so far. Subaru did have to yank the engine, oil leak on the passenger side. It was covered under warranty. I did buy an extended warranty. Hopefully they fixed the dash, my dash has soooooooooooooooooo much glare.
Rav4 is more Outback-category given the extra cargo volume. Kinda wish I waited for the CT Wilderness to come out. It was a bit of a wait to order the 2024 Touring (Premium) that I got last year. I can buy out the lease next year for 25k canadian ($18kusd), but to upgrade to Wilderness now is probably expensive. I think with offroad tires, a skid plate and a trans cooler it would be wilderness-enough for me. The trans cooler would be needed to long offroad trails or towing a small trailer.

The Crosstrek Wilderness is super sick!! I agree with you on the overhyping trim and all that, but that is soooo easily fixed. Black wrap all the gold, blackout the Gold Crosstrek on the side cladding, and remove the two wilderness badges, and it's DONE. Oh, and get it in Wilderness Green or Black. It's just such a sick platform all around 😀😀😀😀
I am torn between the Crosstrek and the Corolla Cross Hybrid. Both similar vehicles and I don't do much off roading. But the Cross blows the Crosstrek away with gas mileage!
That's because the Corolla Cross doesn't have enough power to pass a horse & buggy, unless you have binoculars to look down the road.
Comparing this to a RAV4 makes no sense whatsoever. Corolla cross might be a better comparison. The price is probably fair considering all the amenities this is missing on the interior.
Rear AC vents to begin with and a ton more that the RAV4 offers.
But RAV4 is more narrow up front when you sit inside. Surprisingly, Corolla Cross may be more spacious up front than new RAV4. Toyota makes strange vehicles these days with weird prices
Except the Corolla Cross can’t touch the off road ability. I think it’s even more urban oriented than this is outside of the wilderness trim. Im at OBX and have seen a few of these around town. Not seeing many Rav4s and not a single Corolla Cross.

One minor correction. The Crosstrek is a subcompact. The Forester is the Compact. The closest Toyota would be the Corolla Cross, not the RAV4.

I don't want a Wilderness (most wilderness drivers are just exploring the wilderness of the Walmart parking lot). What I want is a Made in Japan Crosstrek WRX. That would be all the car I would ever need. Give it to us in fun colors and bring back physical climate controls.
Hell pretty much every SUV is at the parking lot. One difference is the Toyota Landcruiser is the king of the Whole Foods parking lot.

My best friend in mountainous B.C. bought one of these recently. He hates it. He gets low 20's average mpg's and it's a total dog getting up the Coquihalla (TVs Highway From Hell) Freeway mountain passes. As soon as he is "right side up" on the car loan, she'll be gone, gone, gone.
Now, I sold these cars. I liked their durability, their resale value and simplicity of controls. But l warned him about the pitfalls. But he didn't listen.
Sorry Subaru, but you need 250hp for this chariot to do its job properly. IMHO.

@@RollerCoasterLineProductions The only issue with Subaru 2.5t engines l knew of was a leaking Head Gasket. If you regularly check it for leaks, you'll probably never have a serious catastrophe, because you'll probably catch it well before disaster strikes. It not a "common" issue, but it is a "real" issue that needs a diligent owner. The only cars that suffered that problem that l knew of were the Subie Forester XT 2.5 Turbo.
So what car has 250hp with the same capability as the crosstrek at 37k? Just curious

Their cvt is actually not too bad to drive. I traded my 2018 Mazda cx-9 for their 2024 ascent.
This model seems like it was intentionally made for Australians and Floridians. As an FL native, this is my next vehicle, so I can go offroading next to my brother and his Tacoma,

This being a Wilderness Edition makes it hard to compare it to the Corolla Cross.
