The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Premium Is An Affordable All-Weather Small SUV

  • With car prices continuing to get out of hand, the redesigned #SubaruCrosstrek bucks that trend with a base price of just under $25,000. The #CrosstrekPremium grade in the mid-trim with an MSRP of just over $26,000 and comes standard with AWD, a big 11.6" touch-screen, adaptive LED headlights, and plenty of space inside. This next-generation #Crosstrek should remain the best-selling vehicle in the sub-compact SUV space.

Weird seeing all the nit-picking comments. I bought a 2024 Premium and love it! What is the big deal with a having a power lift gate? This one can be quickly raised and lowered by hand. I love the infotainment screen. This is my 3rd Subaru and that was one of the reasons I bought it. As far as under-powered, how fast do you need to go? I can merge onto the interstate just fine, and I pass people all the time? Maybe if I lived in the mountains, but I did not feel the extra cost for a sport or limited was as good a value. I too was concerned about the longevity/reliability of CVT transmissions ... 13 years ago, when I bought my first vehicle to employ one. My other vehicles. Toyota Highlander, Camry, Chevy Cruze.

For those wondering why we hate laggy screens now but we didn't mind laggy screens back then, one big reason is because now, a lot of things are baked into the screen while back then, a lot of things were controlled by physical buttons outside the screen. Some cars still have features controlled by hard buttons, and this is why a laggy screen should not be a dealbreaker in a Toyota or Honda

We're getting a premium with the 2.5 engine because after driving a mini cooper for 3 years I need the quicker engine. We wanted an SUV low enough to lift our kayaks onto the roof without step stools. Already used to Apple CarPlay and the back up camera on our van, and living in VA with an underground garage we really don't need the heated seats, but the moonroof will be missed. I think we'll just add a leather cover to the steering wheel. This is the closest thing to my 2008 Saab 9-3 wagon I can find, that was the best car I've ever had.

I had never driven a CVT myself either what I did do was get the XT model which means it has a turbo charged engine as I didn’t want to feel any of the sluggishness that you refer to, I’ve had the car for a little over six months now and taking it on a long holiday and overall I am very pleased with the power and performance of the vehicle. Keep in mind, though that is a bigger vehicle.

If you drive it expressly in a 0-60 type mode it’s gonna feel or, more accurately, sound sluggish but in day to day driving getting up to speed is easy and available reserves of power are readily accessible. I have the Impreza RS which is a tad lighter but significantly lower and more sporty feeling. I’ve never had a CVT vehicle before and still have my bought new ‘02 WRX wagon and I’ve owned a ‘70 454 Monte Carlo SS as well as a ‘76 Civic among many others so it’s not like I don’t have experience in different powertrains and eking out performance from the car you’ve got. Putting it in S mode makes a difference and between that and the paddle shifters, strong brakes, supple ride and super stiff chassis the driving experience overall is superb.

It's such an important interface point and just putting something nicer there makes instantly gives the car a more premium feel vs. making it feel cheap. While 30k ain't a luxury car price, it still isn't cheap and the steering wheel shouldn't make you feel like you are driving a base trim vehicle from 10-15 years ago.

These compact CUV's aren't meant to be race cars, and the hp on the CT is pretty much inline with every other compact CUV is this segment.
The awd is great for the winter months and the ability to make 400 mile trips and knock down 36 mpg on the interstate running 75-80 mph is a bonus.
The CVT is not much different response wise than anything else I've owned with a standard automatic .... and I've owned ALOT of vehicles, currently 3.
Have the tranny flushed every 40k miles and they'll do 200,000+ easily.

@@danielfair4675 I don't think it needs the turbo. The 2.5 is more than adequate. Would just be fun to have a speedy Crosstrek. And I don't totally dislike the CVT. I have a 21 Outback XT Touring, and I can get some pretty good mileage out of it using some hypermiling techniques. I average about 33 mpg with mostly short trips, and it can get low 40s on 55 mph roads. It responds extremely well. I'd imagine you could get mid to upper 30s average with the same drivetrain in a Crosstrek, as well as having that performance when you want it. It's not super sporty, but it's worth the trade off considering the mileage you can get out of it when you're trying to be efficient.

The interior is almost a retro 1980's or 90's with the hard plastic, non-standard LED lighting, with some fake carbon fiber thrown in, for no good reason. But I kinda feel that no-nonsense, it just works interior, vibe. Almost expecting roll-up windows ;) Really how much more would it have cost them to add soft touch to the doors, and LED bulbs inside and out? Looks like the Limited gives you leather seats & larger engine for $4K over the price of a Premium with the fully loaded options. Is that a good value? Maybe yes and maybe no. Leather seats of black can get pretty darn hot in California Summers. They throw in the leather steering wheel and shift knob, but what of the other still hard surfaces? I was thinking of the Sport model, but does the yellow become impossible to keep clean on the seats, and black ( dark gray ) wheels -- not sure about??? Premium, as shown here, might be a best option, unless significantly slower.

I do not get why you and other reviewers continually carp about vehicles w/o an electric liftback. I have one on my mazda, first time for me with this feature, and frankly i hate it. It is slow up and down and the liftgate is unable to be pushed shut easily if the cargo is a bit too much. There is no lift gate i have ever found too heavy to lift (struts you know)and the auto feature just adds weight and cost and is not really more convenient, imo.

Most cars bought nowadays will be on the trash heap in 15-20 years regardless. To me, the batteries on the EVs and hybrids are a concern. I love EVs, but not sure they'll be usable or very desireable after 10 years. There are so many dependencies in these cars and manufacturers will likely stop supporting their older models' tech and software eventually. No surprise there. Congrats on the Rivian and hope it runs well for a very long time.

I can say the 2024 Crosstrek premium is a very good “wagon”. The ride is smooth and handling sure footed with the positioning of the 2 liter boxer engine.
In some cases as far as interior the materials used make sense for this segment, hard touch and durable for the majority of people with kids and or dogs is one less thing that can be easily ruined. Seats are comfortable and most drivers should find the performance acceptable, the AWD and off-road capability for this “wagon” is really good.

I read early Subaru cvt transmissions don’t last that long. After 10 years/ 100k miles it goes back and that’s like a $7-8k in replacement and repair. Even Subaru admitted that early cvts were faulty and extended the warranty as a result to 10 years/100k miles to avoid the backlash. I hope this new cvt transmission is better now. I’m also looking at the Mazda cx30. Less spacious, and awful display non-touch screen but at least it’s not a cvt. Decisions to make and decide lol

The fact that you get a plastic steering wheel in premium trim is not good also the hard plastic dash in part gives the feeling of cheap interior. The power in the U.K. is a miserable 134 BHP down from 150 BHP from the previous year. The 2.5L is not available here neither are the Limited, Sport or the Wilderness trims. We get 2 trims only.
