- Current Republican presidential nominee and former President Donald Trump is set to be in Chicago on Wednesday, and says he will attend the National Association of Black Journalists Annual Convention & Career Fair.
The decision to host Trump has not gone over well with some NABJ members. The decision even led the co-chair for the convention, Karen Attiah, to step down.
"To the journalists interviewing Trump, I wish them the best of luck," Attiah wrote. "For everyone else, I'm looking forward to meeting and reconnecting with all of you in the Windy City."
On Tuesday night - a night after the announcement that Trump would be appearing - NABJ President Ken Lemon reiterated that the invitation to Trump was not an endorsement, and was something extended to both Trump and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris has offered to address NABJ members virtually after the convention. Event organizers say they are still working to reach an agreement.

I really wish they pressed him more vigorously to explain what “black” jobs are and how he thinks that people “invading” us from “jails” and “mental institutions” are taking them away from black people. Those statements seem like irresistible invitations from Trump for journalists to get at the core of what he really thinks about black people, and specifically about their level of intelligence and compassion. I get the sense Rachel Scott would’ve been the one to go there with him …but man, she must have been still reeling from the shock at the bombastic, self-pitying tirade he launched at her.
We used to have a lot of the high paying labor jobs in this country. Construction, roofing, hvac, plumbing, etc. We were squeezed out by the illegals.
Funny how this was an event specifically for blacks, yet he's called racist. Those in attendance are solely focused on what a candidate will do for blacks, and you fault him for specifying black jobs. You also expose that you think many jobs are "bad" and that the people doing them are of lesser value to society. ...and you automatically lump certain demographics into those roles. Consider: 1) Setting aside that you think critical trades aren't valuable, supply and demand dictates wages; if you have 10s of millions of extra supply - who aren't black - the effect is some of those folks will be willing to do existing jobs for less money. 2) When they're illegals - and they're certainly illegal immigrants - an employer can't exactly send them a W-2 for tax filings, so they get paid cash under the table. When an employer can cut expenses in pay and pay A LOT less in taxes, unemployment, disability, and such, what do you think results? It's certainly not more jobs for blacks or whites or legal immigrants, either.
Its because of people like you that Trump cant put this in more obvious terms. Proportionally Blacks have less of the high paying jobs compared to races like say Indian-Americans (not native soil American Indians). The people who are here illegally are not suddenly becoming doctors and lawyers, on average. If you cant even state the problem then you cant begin to fix it.

First, let's put out there what he said. He's talking about a proposed **state bill** which, among other things, would end a state rule that requires at least three physicians confirm that a third trimester abortion is necessary to prevent the woman’s death. 1) This involves EXTREME cases, whereby the woman's life is at risk. 2) Again, it is an extreme case, and not the norm. Most Dems are NOT advocating for late term abortions; that is merely a straw man fallacy.
