Livestock Guardian Dog Feeder Station with Jump Gate for Our Akbash

  • With some upcoming changes to our management practices for our Akbash livestock guardian dog, I am building a feeding station so he will have free-choice access to food. In order to keep the sheep out of the dog food, however, I must install what is called a jump gate. It is designed to keep the sheep out but still allows our Akbash access to his food.

    Buddy you seriously need to get some "dog training tips" from my friend Ceasar Milan. Blue is an Akbash. This breed was made for Live stock protection/guardian. Feeding a canine is compulsory. No engine runs without fuel. You have a good dog. Treat him like a family member and you will see a positive change very quickly. Best of luck with Blue.

    Might be a little difficult for him with his joint issues for long but it's a very cool idea. They do make pet doors with fobs that you attach to a collar. Only the pets with the fob can pass through. It's designed for homes with cats and dogs where they want the dog to go out but not the cat.

    @3:20 Noticed you nailed that fence staple such that both prongs are aligned with the same wood grain. Doing that increases the likelihood of splitting the wood (now or over time), which will weaken/ degrade the wood and loosen the staple. It can help instead to rotate the staple such that the prongs pierce different wood grains. If you rotate it enough, the prongs will snug up against either side of the fencing material, giving a slightly tighter hold. It's more of an issue when nailing near the top of a fence post, where splitting is more likely and more damaging, but I find staying in the habit makes it easier to remember. (Don't mean to pick nits; just thought I'd share, since we're all learning from each other. You might have a better reason for doing it the way you did it.)

    • @TheGrassfedHomestead
      @TheGrassfedHomestead  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no, no reason for doing it the way I did. I spend too much time looking through the camera screen to make sure the action is in the frame and I sometimes forget the small details like that. Thanks for the reminder!

    He's your dog but please consider the effects air, heat and humidity has on his kibble. Right now it's cold but still wet out. Constant temperature and humidity level changes causes the fats in dog food to go rancid, breakdown and even grow mold sometimes while affecting the overall health of your dog. Free feeding denies him the opportunity to be with his human on a set schedule which is what dogs like......a schedule. Twice a day feeding is good for him mentally.I have 4 dogs and they can tell me when it's breakfast and dinner time better than my clock.

    My husband came up with something similar for our GP LGD. It looked like a torture device to me but I guess it worked for the time being. He still feeds him from a 5 g. pail and I still think there has to be a better way. I look forward to seeing your modified version as you work it out. Was Blue already familiar with that feeding bin? Though the sheep are safely away from the feed (and they really went after it), the chickens are still a challenge. On the other hand, this is the first year for no chicken losses. No coincidence, our first LGD year :)

    The feeder gets the food out of Clara's range, would the sheep actually eat dog food? I would think not, but you have far more sheep experience than I, who've owned zero sheep. I think goats would go through that gate as it is, but if made bigger to accommodate Blue I think sheep will also figure out leaping through it.

  • @jnielson3683

    Just finished most of your videos! Whew! Fantastic. Couple questions for you:
    1. Loved the meat selling video, could you do one on broiler chickens? Do you plan on selling those next year?
    2. On your charity video this last holiday season I noticed we could click through your affiliate links to Amazon and then buy anything with the commission still going to you regardless of what it was. We buy a ton on Amazon and I’d love to support you this way. Does this still apply? Is it by volume or number of transactions?
    3. I’ve noticed you seem to have a working relationship with Paul Wheaton, as well as appear to endorse him. I have to admit I found his presentation videos really offensive (the ones I found here....I mean he BRUTALLY took down a 16 year old kid. WTH? His arrogance was crazy!) But Dan, you’re great! You’re humble, but also exceptionally knowledgeable about what you choose to explore. You lend an academic voice to what many perceive as a ‘tree hugging community.’ It is very refreshing. I also appreciate how you treat not only your animals but ALSO your people with kindness and respect. I have a bachelor’s degree in Horticulture and thus come from a much more conventional background, but I’m absolutely fascinated by the principles of permaculture. I truly believe this movement can grow and become more mainstream, but voices like Wheaton’s definitely don’t reflect well on permaculture’s image or the chance to mainstream it to make a bigger impact across the world. Anyway, I don’t need you to answer this question, but rhetorically speaking, would it perhaps be wise to distance yourself from him a bit to protect your credibility as your channel grows? Because it WILL. PS I thought at first I was being silly and sensitive, but then I saw the Fouch Family video on him. Have you seen it?
    4. Have you considered setting up an LLC for your TH-cam channel? You can write off just about anything you vlog about: ie your generators, your butchery equipment, at least part of your truck, your barn, even your ski trips.......any new hats you get in the future. 😁
    5. Last, for now, possible future content: could you do an illustration video on how you rotated your different herds this past years throughout the growing season.......the pros and cons of the pigs (they were obviously not a hit but I’m still not completely sure why.....I think Ashley was trying to be diplomatic, but he facial expressions whenever they came up don’t lie😆).......an overview of your chicken flock: the different breeds, their eggs (size and color), your favorites, and your plans for breeding?
    Thanks! Watching your content has been awesome! I LOVED watching you start from scratch. So.cool!

    • @TheGrassfedHomestead
      @TheGrassfedHomestead  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      whoa! you've been saving all your questions for the end!
      1. Poultry selling regulations seem to vary much more by state. I don't plan on selling broilers this year but we will be raising some for ourselves. With that, I probably won't be doing a video with me presenting the info but if I can find an expert in that area I'd be glad to involve them in a video.
      2. Yes! This still applies. I have a link in our TH-cam channel banner also and our website. If you click through and purchase anything within 24 hours, we get a small commission. Thank you in advance for your support 😊 The commission is based on a percentage of sales.
      3. Paul has done A LOT in the way of spreading permaculture and supporting others who are also spreading the word. Without Paul, there wouldn't have been Diego Footer's Permaculture Voices conferences or podcasts. Without Paul, there wouldn't have ever been a Permaculture Chickens and no one would have ever heard of Justin Rhodes (that's not me saying this, that came from Justin). If no Justin or Diego, there'd be no Grass-fed Homestead. Paul has been very kind to us and supportive of our efforts. He is known for having very strong opinions and he has an aggressive way of expressing the opinions at times but he truly cares about making the same difference we're all trying to make. You are certainly not alone in your assessment of Paul but there is another side to him.
      4. I have considered this but I don't generate enough revenue to justify a LLC so I'm still running it as a sole proprietorship. I am still able to write-off expenses related to the channel (camera purchases, batteries, etc) but I'm really careful what I write-off.
      5. We will be doing a video on the pig situation very soon. You're correct, Ashley isn't a fan but she doesn't mind the bacon or the chops 😊. I'm sure we'll be doing the other videos you've suggested once we get into spring (it's still very much winter here though I can sense the change coming).
      Julie - I sincerely thank you for all your support and watching all the videos. It means a lot to me to get the feedback you've provided. I'm really glad you enjoyed the videos. I hope they've been in some way helpful or motivational in your pursuits.

      @jnielson3683 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! Thank you for replying. I honestly wasn’t expecting it. Thanks!
      1. Maybe Amiable Acres could talk more about their broilers?
      3. Thank you for your perspective on Paul Wheaton. I’m sure TH-cam is like texting, so easy to misinterpret.
      Speaking of TH-cam, one last BRAVO for sharing the awesome.......and the ugly. Very very brave. I’m a landscape designer, a florist, a mom of six kids, we flip houses, and we’re getting ready to start building our own little homestead in the next year. I’m sure there’s some fodder in there somewhere for a TH-cam channel, and people who have watched our house transformations around town have suggested it......but I KNOW I’m not brave enough, nor do I have a thick enough skin. But yes, your channel and others have taught, inspired and motivated me. Thank you for the generosity and bravery to share.
      LAST, please tell Tess I think she’s a saint. Her smile.......and she just oozes goodness. I’d drive the 12 hours just to meet her! Looking forward to more videos. Cheers!

    Ok just a few thoughts. You spend so much time thinking about how to feed him but not what you are feeding him. You do good things with the whole grass fed concept and yet (sorry for this) but fail with your dog. Dogs are carnivores. They aren’t meant to eat kibble. Period. You want him to be health then change his diet. He always looks depressed and not very happy to see you. Your philosophy of eating good food shouldn’t just stop with your family or the animals you consume. It should also include those that help you achieve your goals. Dogs are direct descendants of wolves. If you go to a zoo and see animals eat, they eat species appropriate diets. And therefore so should dogs. Would you feed your sheep meat. No because they are herbivores. Also, free feeding is bad for dogs. Wolves by nature are gorge their food. Feeding them a constant food supply increases their chances of diabetes and cancer when you constantly feed them kibble. Kibble is the same as human fast food. Sure it fills you up. But sustaining you in the long run it is bad. Fresh meat, fruit and veggies are what he needs. It really isn’t that hard. I bet he gets way more enthused about eating and greeting you.
