We live in the country and people think that it's okay to drop off their dogs when they don't want them anymore. Last summer a man in a big white Denali dropped off the most beautiful Kangal. She chased the car for miles. Our neighbor saw it, and told us about it. We already had 4 dogs, but figured we could find a rescue for her. She finally just walked on to our property one evening after we had spent hours looking for her. She had been on her own for 15 days and was really skinny. She is the best dog we have ever had. So sweet! It has taken her a long time to trust but she is finally warming up to us. I would have paid thousands for this amazing dog. We adore her.

Same story! Someone dumped a beautiful white kangle on our doorstep. She was malnourished. And badly mistreated! She still has nightmares. She trusted my wife at first. But not me. That tells me a man beat her! If I tried to touch her, she flinched. I won her over with patience and love. She greets me when I come home. Jumps up on her hind legs and puts her pawpaws on my shoulders. She plays with me and gets hugs. She has a forever home!

My friend has a kangal here in the UK, he's 14yr old still incredibly athletic, once he gets to know you and accepts you he's fine but not many have made it onto his 'herd list'. He's fantastic with kids, calm, vigilant, protective, never really switches off, a majestic intelligent dog who I always feel looks through you, a wiser dog I've yet to find. Truly a remarkable breed.

Yeah and shepherds do not train these dogs. They go with the herds after growing up to a certain point and by looking up to the older ones they learn what to do but even tho there aren't any older dogs around, they somehow know what you expect from them and what they need to do . It is a natural guardian dog breed. They always know what they need to do.

For those considering purchasing a Kangal for use on a small hobby farm or small homestead, please consider the following. Kangals have spent millennia being culled for open range predator protection by nomadic herding cultures where the flock migrates throughout the season. The dogs are not genetically coded to stay stationary, in a very small area comparitively speaking. Kangals are well known for large patrol areas on the outside of your livestock. There are exceptions but this breed seeks out predators to displace in ever widening circles depending on terrain and predator density. There are inside the flock type dogs that remain in the flock, perimeter dogs that work the edges of the flock out to a quarter mile or so, and roamers rangers that have wide patrol areas outside of the flock displacing predators up to five miles out. In my experience the Kangal most often is in the roamer ranger group. LGD'S are bred to be canine agressive to varying degrees as the PRIMARY PREDATORS ARE CANINES. If you are in an area where dogs pass by your property you are going to have problems. If you fail to contain your dog and it goes onto other people's property it may end up getting shot, or you may end up in court. Research your breeds, observe the parents, their previous offspring, SPEND TIME learning what breed is more suitable for your environment. You will save a lot of trouble for both yourself and the dog.

Excellent post it's true that many people don't take the millennia old genetic behavioural programming in these protection breeds. I personally wouldn't have a kangal without animals to protect and at least ten acres to patrol. Whilst some may adapt to a domestic life today they are not to be bred from unless the genetic printing is preserved. This can only really be done by keeping the breed doing as authentic a job as possible daily or the instincts to guard will fade in just a few generations.. Great post again..

As a Turk, I liked the video very much. I would like to point out that; Kangal dog does not need any special training. He learns everything from other older dogs. Even if he doesn't learn, he instinctively knows what to do. Therefore, it does not harm newborn baby animals. On the contrary, he protects them more carefully. In my country, it is often heard that a Kangal dog, who keeps watch for days next to a sheep that is left behind the herd because it has given birth, brings the sheep home healthy. Finally, let me say this: Kangal dog is a guardian angel for the human/animal on the "herd list". It is a nightmare for those who think of harming them.

It was kind of luck that I ended up with them, and now I am hooked for life. In 5 or 10 years when we move and expand our farm, I will definitely be adding more Kangal dogs to the family. Knowing how small the gene pool is in the US, I will definitely do some importing, in addition to supporting American breeders. Thanks for a great video about these amazing dogs.

These dogs are cool but can be scary lol. I was in Turkey a couple years ago in the mountains. Suddenly my ATV stopped working and I was walking with it next to a small farm. A couple minutes later I saw a big herd of sheep and a Kangal saw me and he was staring at me and barking. I made sure to get away as fast as possible lol. This also happend when I was fishing with my dad in Turkey and we saw a big herd of goats with a farmer and a kangal. The kangal came running to me and he was circling me. My dad was like just put your fishing pole down, because it thinks that you want to play. I put it down and it worked. He got back to work with his herd.

we own a 180 acre cattle and hay ranch.we already had three sheperds and we ended up resuing a female kangal. shes very vigilant right away.but what i dont understand is when my grand daughters are here our kangal wont let them out of her sight.i was cautious of what her intent was until someone unknown approached our proprty looking for work and millie.our kangal went nuts thinking that man was a threat.
to this day she acts as my little girls protector.
we have mountain lions evry now and then and millie is not afraid in any way. shes a very unique dog. i love her to death. one thing they need room to roam and move about.
they are not house dogs or a traditional pet.

In northern regions of Turkey, kangals watch all the children in the villages when they are not protecting the livestock. Old kangals that do not protect livestock anymore do that 7/24, follow the kids inside and outside of the village, making sure that they are not in danger.

I have half Kangal half Pyranees pup from a Wyoming Ranch. He is 4 mo. and just a sweetheart. I am a 'stay at home' mom for him. He is a replacement for our American Akita guard dog. We also have a boxer and 4 cats. We live on less than 2 acres in the Rocky Mountains and have a lot of wildlife. If I don't give him a 'job', work with him, or let him out to play with the big dogs, he will entertain himself. So smart, so sweet, and so attentive. He keeps a tally on all the pets. Question: Why do people argue over Kangal being an Antolian dog? He was on lead through a craft fair in a college town. Totally mellow and everyone passing made comments and wanted to pet him. Why do people want to challenge me on telling them he is a Kangal/Pyranees guardian dog? Nobody argued that he has Mastiff in his blood, but his dad is 100% Kangal and his grandpa lives in Turkey.

Another unique behavior displayed by the kangal is when a sheep or cattle heard is on the move ,one kangal will move ahead of the heard to scout ahead , one would guard the rear and some would protect the flanks of the heard from predators

According to one article I read most LGD's were bred to look like the sheep there were protecting so they couldn't easily be spotted in the group. This made it harder for predators to plan attacks on flocks. Kangals were bred to look like the fawn colored sheep with black faces (Akkaraman Sheep were one fawn colored breed used in Turkey) while dogs like Akbash were bred to protect white sheep (Kivircik). Certain Sheep were suited better for some regions with certain climates and terrain while others sheep were better suited for other regions with different climate so different kinds of dogs were needed for each region and although most all Turkish LGD's share many common bloodlines they also had distinct differences mostly in color but also in size depending on terrain and etc of the regions they were located. Pretty interesting Article.

Very good video on the Kangals and the Kentucky landscape .
I have a Romanian rescue Kangal now 7 years old , having had him 4 years now .
Now I know why he likes to sit and sleep on my garden table ...they like high ground as the lady said .
He is a very social dog , loves to meet other dogs when out walkies and has got a lot better when off the lead ...he will come to me when I call out ....eventually !
He does have a distinctive growl ...very gutteral .
I have another Romanian rescue dog and they get on with each other very well . Duke the Kangal and Mila the ❓❓. They love to play and chase each other with lots of rough and tumble.
In 4 years they have not needed the vets . I don't get them jabbed and no flea treatments ( no flea problems ) . Best of all , no vet bills so far !
They love raw meat and chicken wings...aswell as some dry and wet dog food .
Blessings from the Isle of Wight , England 🇬🇧🆓🇱🇷

That's true they need space to roam, or good, long hikes everyday in nature. Correction: they have been bred not for hundreds of years but for approximately 6000 years. Actual name is Anatolian Shepherd. They are a perfect guard dogs, but when brought up in a right way ( calm, assertive and kind yet decisive leader) they are never aggressive, or violent. They are very loving and loyal to their family/owner, respectful yet shy with others, ferocious with true predators. The good thing is , they don't need an extra training on protection skills. They becoming guard dogs out of their own nature while growing up, and learning to discern who is who and what is what, and how to act when it's needed. Amazing intelligence!

I rescued a "Mastiff" puppy once....I've had a few Mastiffs....kinda know how they typically act.... Don't use negative reinforcement training ever.....and I got this dog when it was maybe 3 months old. She didn't exactly look pure bred but who cares it was a rescue. The people were alarmed at how quickly she was growing and they were older. I don't believe they beat her or anything. Anyway....I took her everywhere, trained her and because of her size....and her super high aggression to ANYONE who walk too quickly towards my wife(aside from me)...I sent her to a private trainer. Her fur never stopped at Mastiff length and tail sorta curled...She was the most protective dog I have ever had in my life. She was super badass, smart and vigilant. Vigilant only comes close to discribing it though. I could simply say "watch em" and that was it. If they moved too quickly she'd let em know. All that said....she was lovable to me and my two young kids. I would take another any time. Used to rate Old English Mastiffs as my fav but the Kengal is the bees knees. That training was obedience training btw not gaurd, defense or anything like that. She came that way. At 140 pounds I wanted my wife to feel comfortable and confident while handling her. If you want one of these. You better treat it right. There ain't no white picket fence cute and cuddly in these dogs. These are working dogs. They demand the level of respect anyone working would. Don't do dumb shit with em. They are almost perfect.

Poteluz I had seen on TV in Turkey years ago a news about one kangal which weights 235 lb or 245 lb I cannot be sure right now but it was definetely more than 220 lb I remember. Also as I know their shoulder length may reach up to 1 meter. The apperance difference is I think about the climate. The climate that kangals live in Turkey is acctually quite rough. It is a very cold area and high from the sea. When you take them to different part of Turkey they loose their shape and features also..
