GREG, i found most dogs dont know their jobs till their a year old!! and yup i believe in the big three (3) shots, parvo, rabies, and distemper. that is a nice litter of future workers!!
I have to agree on the big 3 shots. We had a beagle come in contact with Parvo but lived. That was a changed dog and horrific to witness. Rather be safe than sorry, though I'm not a huge believer in over vaccinating when it's really not necessary for most things when your animals have strong immune systems.

I try to do everything natural on our place, but I'm right there with ya on the parvo shots. We almost lost a second pup to it before we figured out what was going on. Not anymore. Parvo shots for all.
Nice pups. We have a litter due first of DEC. A little cool then, but we are going to have to start feeding hay soon. Finally getting rain. A little late, but we'll take it.
Thank you Greg for promoting Parvovirus & vaccinations for puppies & dogs! It comes in on our feet from outside our environment and impossible to prevent without vaccinations. I've even seen a huge die-off of coyotes way out in the country where I lived. Vaccinations are great. Nothing more heartbreaking & expensive than losing a whole litter of puppies❤️

The way I acclimate my Guardians to the flock is simply keep the Mom and pups with the Flock. They learn from Mom, and bond with the flock. I use two different breeds, Kangals and Boerboels. Boerboels stay close to the Flock and Kangals will range and hunt down the offending predators.
I just got my pure Anatolian at 10 weeks from a ranch where mama was top guardian of 200 cattle, 300 sheep and numerous poultry. I actually chose her because her mother is a fierce hawk killer and protects the birds as well as the sheep, cattle. But I took her home and am still nervous, my chickens are pets. I'm hoping 10 weeks is a really good amount of time to have learned chickens are friends, especially since her incredible mother is such a great guard dog. That's a darn fine mess of pups. I'm with you on the shots. Parvo, distemper and rabies at minimum. A normal 5 way puppy shot is cheap enough insurance for things that the yotes and raccoons keep running through the environment.
Was going to ask what you do about Parvo, but you finally mentioned it at 09:20. I'm way too paranoid to leave my pups out on pasture until they've had their second parvo shot. Anyone who says you shouldn't vaccinate an LGD pup is ignorant to the point of malfeasance.

Yep, a barking dog only when something is around. I never did any guard dog training with my black lab/shepherd female. But she is a fantastic watchdog. People are not interested in finding out if she will bite either. And the coyotes around here stay far away from here. When I was gone to settle my little brother & mothers estates they said the coyotes would come right up towards the back door of the houses. Now that we are back it doesn't happen anymore.
Hey Greg! How do you train your puppies to respect your electric fence? I have a two strand hot wire fence and a lot of people are saying that won't keep a puppy in. Just wanted to know your thoughts on this. I know you usually have on wire for your cross fences
Use Poultry electric netting to introduce them to electric. When you put them in the netting, run 2 polybraid offset wires 4 inches apart and 4 inches from the netting. Have a switch that you can shut off immediately if one of the puppies gets tangled in the wire. When you first put them in, you need to sit there about an hour to ensure they all get shocked and they realize what it was that shocked them.
Greg, at what age do you release the pups into General Population with the big dogs? And how long do you keep the pups on Purina Puppy Chow (assuming you use “Complete or maybe “Large Breed” version of Purina Puppy Chow ?)? Thank you in advance for your answer. Im re-watching all your LGD videos to get re-blued as our Pyrenees is due in three weeks… trying to get ahead of the curve and get everything prepared.
1st Make sure you worm the pregnant dog right now. If she whelps and has any worms, the pups get infected with them and she loses weight trying to nurse them all. Puppy Chow is fed for 3 weeks after weaning, then normal dog feed. Pups are turned in with big dogs as soon as they are weaned.
It's viscous. It killed my pup. Have a new one now, hope it makes it. It's been vetted. We want to adopt a big dog since we had two large dogs but they kept killing my chickens and I don't like a dog that's tied down all the time. Had to give them away.

We gave our pup a parvo shot. 6 weeks later he died from a "parvo-like virus" according to the autopsy. The actual parvo test was negative 3 separate times. $1,500 in vet bills and $450 for a necropsy and we'll never do parvo shots for our pups again. I'm convinced the pup died from the vaccine strain of parvo. The shot is not a guarantee your puppy won't get sick and you can't guarantee they won't get sick from the shot itself (we also had a dog have a horrible reaction to the lepto shot). Maintaining biosecurity is key!!! No exposure, no risk. Shots aren't a way to wash hands for an animal's health.
Our experience has been exactly the opposite. We bought a whole weaned litter from a breeder that shared your thoughts, absolutely would not give Parvo shots. The whole litter died in 2 days. Hey Greg. Thank you for this video! Would you mind sharing the measurements for this “pup tractor”? Also, what do you use for the “roof bows” to keep the tarp pitched over it? Thanks again! You’re helping us so much as we learn!
I raise Pyrenees/Anatolian/Maremma cross, born in with the sheep raised up in with the sheep, have had good results this way. The older working Guardian dogs take care of the on the job training, they bond well with the sheep and the sheep participate in the bonding and training around lambs. Working Guardian dogs are far better at training than we are for this job, it's natural. I also highly recommend a 5-way-with Parvo vaccination for puppies, and if you sell one that has not completed the series quarantine for 2wks if the people change their mind as the risk would not be worth it (but you always want to be able to stand behind your pups). I am quite sure that Mr Judy does.

First got the idea with Amish that can not use electronic fence. They want to rotate something with turkey and hens, so we suggested lambs to grass finish. Yes it would be at least four moves a day. They mostly have children at home that cane move them. I guess moves would depend on forage quality & height also. Maybe 8-10 lamb iva 120 square foot tractor? I am open, I have sen some metal cages doing this. #naturalgramma RevHank and Laura Reid
Where I am from, you can have up to 4-5 even 6 feet of snow in the pasture, so there's no way a sheep can go underneath that to get some grass sadly. Especially if there's ice somewhere in between the layers of snow.
We set a 3 month old pup in with some young lambs, a few days later he is chasing them and playing too rough. Set him in a pen with some yearling lambs, they are too rough on him. What's next?
I'm curious why you feed your dogs kibble. It just seems that you'd be the type to feed them a more natural diet for dogs. But maybe you've tried that and there are things I'm not aware of that are issues with doing that for livestock guardian dogs. Have you ever tried having your dogs on raw food?
Many years ago when I was a kid, I watched a documentary that had a Basque shepherd training a guardian dog puppy.. The shepherd imprinted the puppy on the sheep by having it nurse off of a ewe. Does anyone else do that?
I need to adopt an adult livestock guardian dog or dogs to protect my herd and places but I don't know how to make them accept me or the herd. The main issue they need time to grow up!!!

Hey Greg. Thank you for this video! Would you mind sharing the measurements for this “pup tractor”? Also, what do you use for the “roof bows” to keep the tarp pitched over it? Thanks again! You’re helping us so much as we learn!
What kind are they they are so cute, I would love to have the male with the black nose
Hi we live by a highway with 37 acres and we need to train them to stay off the highway. Any tips on that
how tall is the back of your average cow?
48-50" hip height
How are you keeping other intact male dogs away? And your male from following his drive to not run off and mating with other in heat females?
Page appears to be down. How much are they going for?
I'm worried about that white bucket of water. A little deeper than they are tall, if they get upside down in there they are done....
Yup. That's definitely something to worry about. Hope he sees your post!
The puppies do fine with the water bucket. We started with a smaller one, they climbed in them and dirtied up the water. This bucket works great.
@@gregjudyregenerativerancher ok still worried though
@@drumminjohn6626 yes we lost a baby yorkie in that manner. It was a mini and the older larger puppy bumped the tiny one when drinking and inhaled water 1200.00 later it died. There just babies and need protection.
Are these good for watching over chickens too?
#naturalgramma wants to add haired sheep next year, maybe in #aluminumchickentractor, I think it will work for small producers!
What do you guys think?
Natural Gramma LLC RevHank and Laura Reid
There will be an issue with them not getting enough forage. I guess if you moved the cage 4-5 times a day it might work.
You found the pups?
OMG could they be any cuter?!
How many dogs to guard how many sheep, would you suggest?
Where I am from, you can have up to 4-5 even 6 feet of snow in the pasture, so there's no way a sheep can go underneath that to get some grass sadly. Especially if there's ice somewhere in between the layers of snow.
Your right, no grazing in those conditions
What about faeces contamination on the grass? Can this not cause Sarcocytosis?
Put that breed down in writing!! Also can they be trained to guard poultry? How much do you get for them? Where are you located?
Greg, what do you do with the puppies when you move their cage?
Weaning at 8 weeks is optimal, that last 2 weeks with momma is vital. Well proven fact.
We set a 3 month old pup in with some young lambs, a few days later he is chasing them and playing too rough. Set him in a pen with some yearling lambs, they are too rough on him. What's next?
Keep him with older sheep until he grows out of his puppy playing stage.
@@gregjudyregenerativerancher Yessir!
is one fine, or do 2 work better together? Are male or female better guard dogs?
2 trained dogs work well. 2 puppies together can get in trouble.
We have both male and females. Equally good guardian dogs in both sexes.
@@gregjudyregenerativerancher Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.
Our neighbors kept cattle in with a strand of barbed wire that low at 11:54
What keeps the rodents out of the dog food? What kind of sheep do you have?
The metal door has a magnet that holds it shut when the dogs are not eating.
How much are your puppies?
Always PARVO shots. Yours move from your land to new land and you just don't know if it is lurking on you property.
How much are your pups
I'm curious why you feed your dogs kibble. It just seems that you'd be the type to feed them a more natural diet for dogs. But maybe you've tried that and there are things I'm not aware of that are issues with doing that for livestock guardian dogs. Have you ever tried having your dogs on raw food?
GOD gave us Dominion over our animal's, but with that it is our responsibility to care for them ! Love is the key , GOD IS LOVE !
GOD BLESS !!!
I forgot something, We can ALL see you sir LOVE YOUR ANIMALS and take Excellent care of them !!!!
Do you have any pups left?
Many years ago when I was a kid, I watched a documentary that had a Basque shepherd training a guardian dog puppy.. The shepherd imprinted the puppy on the sheep by having it nurse off of a ewe. Does anyone else do that?
Where are ya'll located...?
I need.a trained farm dog...How much ya sell them for...?
This is Larry Lange I was wanting to know how I can get with you or your helpers to get a dog or 2 we are going to gets 40 acre farm
Did you find your dog already? I know someone with beautiful LGD puppies. Working dogs.
I've lost a few pups at different times and places due to parvo and that's a horrible way to die. I'll never go without getting new dogs that shot.
I dont like vaccines for the most part but, I think there is an exception for a few.
Look at those tails waggling back and forth!
Any pups available yet? Thanks
what the breed of these puppies
I’m also interested in the breed.
Maremma/Anatolian/Great Pyrenees
@@brich2929 thank you
I'm new here n love what I hear so far..subscribes!!!
Do you administer vaccinations yourselves?
We do give pups 3 rounds of Parvo.
What if you’ve only got one puppy and want to train it to be a guardian dog
Be patient with it, reward it when it does well, reprimand it when it does things you don't like (chasing or harassing sheep!)
Yes give parvo, 5 way. its pain full on them, Eats there guts up. Give them the 4 every 2 weeks. Worm them every 2 weeks, hook round worm.
No mention of their age or age of goals.
Why would you remove them from their mom so young?
The breeder weans them at that age.
Why are you adding a higher percentage of Anatolian
They are 1/4 pyr, 1/4 Anatolian, 1/2 Marremma
@@gregjudyregenerativerancher thanks, I thought you said they were 1/2 anatolia and 1/2 Marremma with a little pyrenees
Cheers
I need to adopt an adult livestock guardian dog or dogs to protect my herd and places but I don't know how to make them accept me or the herd.
The main issue they need time to grow up!!!
Do you have any for rehoming? We are going to start raising sheep and bees LGDs
Contact him through his website " GreenPasturesFarm.net". But be aware that his puppies come trained and ready to go, so they cost in the $2,000 USD range.
@@movinon1242 That's cheap I'm thinking double that. My wife's little nut was $1600. For a puppy
Tractor Supply brand 4 Health is THE best dog food! Dogs are carnivores and carnivore do not eat corn, wheat or soy. Please consider, 4 Health. I will also bet, that you will save 💰 too!
Do you sell pups.
No we sell trained guardian dogs.
@@gregjudyregenerativerancher I dont just want a puppy.
I am looking to get some kinkos later in 2021. I beleive I'm going to be obtained a gaurd for them.
I do have a concern would be barking all night.
And what part of the country your in.
Don’t leave that white bucket of water in the pen. It’s a drowning risk. If a puppy goes in there headfirst, it may not be able to back out.
Why don't you say how old they are they look too young to be weaned . Where is their mother?
oh my God, I love em. We ( well it really has nothing to do with me) the moms Kikos are having babies. !!! I would like a young GP to grow up with other LGDs. Because, i hate to think about it, they and me are getting older. But, i have no luck finding one. I've tried rescue, rehome. That's a story in its self. Besides, all this flying em in, etc. Or driving three states. The airport isnt even close. Got any ideas. My idea was to have her have one litter and have her fixed. I see these litters and think OMG!!! Dont want to be in the puppy business !!!@
