I got a male akbash, great Pyrenees mix at 8 weeks old. He is now almost 3, and to this day coyotes and other predators do not come within 2 miles of my property. I love this mix of guard dogs!

I also have a akbash/Pyrenees mix. We’ve had him for 2 years. I also have an old 11 year old Pyrenees. We have 5 cats too. Since we moved in, no more bears, mountain lions, or coyotes in my cul de sac. Skunks on the other hand moved in under my shed and sprayed my akbash frequently for a year. I taught him to get them and 4 skunks later we don’t have that problem anymore

We had one of these dogs on a farm guarding 200 head of cattle and goats. He was tall and needed zero human intervention. He was the flock guardian. Watching him work the heard on the hills was amazing. He could easily jump over a six foot hence. His stature was imposing and because he lived with the heard he was cautious of humans! I could not imagine having another one of these dogs without land. Keeping them locked up in a house seems like torture as these dogs like to explore and be independent. He had an uncanny ability to sense when predators were on the land and would seek them out. Property was 250 acres and he controlled every inch of it!

Your post makes me feel a little bad. We just adopted a Pyrbash puppy. We don’t have a farm, but we do have a huge area for him to roam. These dogs a plentiful and need homes. I’ve owned purebred Pyrs but Akbash is new to me. He has a little more attitude lol. We are trying to give him the best life possible. We have issues with coyotes and bears, so hopefully this little guys presence will keep them away. My Pyrs have passed so it’s just Niko (Pyrbash) and my standard poodle/shepherd mix Lily. Don’t let the “poodle” fool ya! She’s a monster! We love them both, and we’re trying to give them the best lives possible. But no farm here😢.

Got an Akbash/GP female a couple of weeks ago. She's 10 weeks old and quite the handful with tons of sass. Exactly what I needed for my small farm and flock.
It's gonna be work, but nothing good comes easy.
    Asha is her name.

Our Akbash dogs were absolutely crazy about our children. One would regularly jump the fence to be with our girls who were at the time only three and four.. They guarded our flock of some 300 sheep. Never had a coyote problem anymore.

I have an Akbash/ Pry Pyrbash puppy and they are awesome, but very stubborn. My boy Niko is very independent but he has a sweet temperament. He hates being crated at night and let’s me know by barking for hours. We’re working on it, but he’s extremely intelligent. I taught him sit, shake, and down in one 10 minute session.

Great video! I adopted my akbash at a couple years old and he’s been a bit of a challenge with some training but overall he’s such a good boy. Those protective instincts are no joke he can sense people before they even approach the door. Who needs a doorbell when you have an akbash?

Since I know the origin of these dogs and watched many documentaries in the original language of the dog creators I want to inform you.
These dogs are naturally against not-familiar all other dogs. Their purpose is to be able to fight against wolves 1 vs 1 or even 3 vs 1 as he can do best. In addition, like all Turkish stock guard dogs, they should be in a couple. Otherwise, the male dog instead of killing female wolves will try to reproduce.
1- This dog should strong enough to deal with wolves
2- All non-familiar people and animals are threats to them. Because when you want to keep your stock safe you should also prevent stealing by humans not only wolves.
3- These dogs will sacrifice their life for your safety. Especially for your kids. These dogs are actually naturally good with kids but like everything the kids they familiar with.
4- The feeding and natural environment of these bred is crucial. These dogs can run 5 km to catch or chase dogs through uphill.
5- There are also different types of Akbas and meaning of Akbas is white head.

Yes. Regarding #2 - in the news today, an Akbash and a Great Pyrenees (guard dogs) jumped their fence , which was only 3 feet high and attacked a woman and her toy poodle, severely wounding the woman and the dog. The guard dogs property was right next to a very large nature preserve. They think the dogs may have jumped the fence before and also may have considered the nature preserve part of their territory. So, as you said, they would have thought of the woman and her dog as threats to them. Of course, their owners should have take more care to see that they could not escape and run free.

I can say akbas carry too strong protection instincts againts strangers or other animals , Many people get this dog coz of soft sweet looking , but result is opposite! if you plan to get one of your apartment or if you live in city , firstable this dog can't be your first dog ! Beside you have to be %100 alpha and train has to start when dog is puppy !

No - Unlike a lab, an Akbash Dog doesn't live to please you -- it's attitude is that it is there to oversee everything and tolerate humans who it is devoted to but basically smarter than. Would your lab be happy if you left it at the barn with sheep at night? Probably not! An Akbash Dog is!!!
