I think I learned something by observing Maestro Bruno playing "When You're Smiling": In solo guitar, it's all about the cadenza. Another thought arose while watching Maestro Bruno play: 'Thank God for the Western tonal system.' And thank you, Maestro Bruno, thank you.

Hi Jimmy. I've taken your advice re: real books and using my ear more. I noticed on Cantaloupe Island, the melody over the Dm7 has an Eb note. Actually sounds less dissonant to me than the natural E. Seems everywhere I look says play D Dorian over it. I guess that's why you need to keep listening. Theory alone doesn't cut it. Any thoughts on this? Am I wrong?
Also, is your current lesson website JBGW? Cheers!

In 1964, I was 20 yeas old and loved jazz. I went to the Newport Jazz Festival to see John Coltrane and just before Trane’s set, Joe Williams was on stage and tore the house down! When lots of people rushed the stage in Freebody Park, George Wein, the promoter, went to the mic and told the crowd he would shut the evenings performance down if they didn’t return to their seats. Luckily, everyone did as he asked and I got to see and listen to Coltrane live for the very first and last time. Joe Williams was fantastic and had the Newport house band as his band.........Coleman Hawkins, Roy Haynes, etc. What a night! P.S. This was the last NJF held in Freebody Park due to how large it became.

Jimmy Bruno That same weekend, I also got to meet and have breakfast with Roy Haynes. I had just finished have breakfast with the friend I went to Newport with and as we left the restaurant and started walking downing the street, I saw Roy coming our way. I said hello and briefly mentioned Coltrane. Roy invited us to breakfast with him.........two white, middle class kids from Philly........and after we ate he took us to one of the local jazz clubs on Newport. We walked in and the emcee stopped what he was saying and introduced “Mr. Roy Haynes and his two friends!” Needless to say, we were totally blown away.
Roy was the drummer the year in the Newport Jazz Festival’s house band, so I got to see him play for two nights. That trip was one of the great highlights of my life!

I put it right up there with the Tony Gatliff documentary "Latcho Drom" about the evolution of gypsy music. In the NJF film, the photography and cutting, as well as of course the fabulous musicians, are so beautiful. All the best!

Jimmy, I've known your guitar playing and admired it for about 15 years. The mic on your device does not really does the job. Would be great to hear you in a better quality audio. Former Tony Romandini's student. Cheers
