    the symbol minus next to chord sometimes means flat and sometimes mean the chord is minor...wish they didnt do that.

    'Yes' to a few posts below ....He puts an 'O' symbol , which is the 'diminished' chord symbol, above the A7. And that's what he was supposed to write, a simple, A7 (Dom. is understood with this type symbol) ! And of course an 'O' with a ' / ' across it makes it a 'half diminished' chord or 'Min 7 b5' . Hard to believe someone playing jazz this long a time, and 'teach' it, to boot, could either write the mistake or worse, not immediately know it's wrong in the first place ! ! I'm 68. I learned all this stuff in my teens in NYC...I hope Jimmy knows a 'triangle' means 'major' . This is employed to make sure player realizes that the chord absolutely is now 'major' ( when before on hs chart, same chord name WAS 'minor' ). Or, we can use the triangle all the time as in say, 'C triangle 7' which means of course, C Maj7........Dig ?
    Jimmy is still a great guitarist, no doubt.....,

      +Mark Harris I think it may be a "D" for dominant .

    • @MarkInLA
      @MarkInLA 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      And that would then make it correct ? No. I'm not going to go thru all the vids to find it again, but no one writes 'A7 D'. It's A7 period ! Leave alone a D could mean 'diminished' too. But D is not used in any way whatsoever in harmony other than. of course D7, DMin.7, Db , Db Dim. etc....

    • @scottchild4233
      @scottchild4233 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, it would still be incorrect.

      +Mark Harris he was just pointing out this is the dominant chord. He's not writing a score. He didn't make a mistake. Were you listening or just staring at the board?

      He was probably thinking of #I dim7 which is a rootless VI7b9 and a very common sub for VI7.

  • @camp7203
    @camp7203 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why did he write the VI chord with the diminished icon instead of A7? Just a thought as I watch this.

      It is a D not a O. He notated that way to show the triad was functioning as a Dominant chord. He said it was a dominant, but the written D just looked like a O !

      Ditto - Bruno said Dominant and wrote a D letter to represent Dominant.

    Great video, but I don't know why it's titled "Anatomy of a Line" when I'm not hearing any lines, just chord work

    Why is he writing minor chords with capital letters? If he wanted a C-Dm-G7 progression it would simply be I-ii-V.
    He's hard to follow and I know the stuff. Great player, not much of a communicator. And he doesn't seem very well prepared. Too many mistakes that have to be changed and can make it very difficult for a beginner.

      Brian Toth I vi ii V or I VI ii V .....I've seen both used. The I VI II V is used by some. I remember in college at CCNY we used
      I ii iii V vi VII°
      for C^ D-7 E-7 F^ G7 A-7 B°7
      In Nashville they do another one. I like the one with lower case added. Works good. Whatever works.

      Brian Toth The Tritone sub symbol V with the line through it is cool. I like that. Otherwise, we end up with bII .....
      Seems better to me. The Tritone sub happens a lot and bII looks awkward. I like to write a legend on my charts. Then everybody is on the same page. I remember in classical theory they called the Tritone sub a neopolitan chord. There were 3 types. A German, French and Italian depending on the inversion. Oh man.

      Brian Toth Chick Corea has a system close to Jimmy's. I can't remember it completely but I think he uses all upper case.

    I don't think jimmy is an educated man. He's very difficult to follow. He has ideas he's attempting to convey but doesn't have the vocabulary to articulate his thoughts. He can play guitar but can't talk about it

      He seems to be smarter, better educated, and more articulate than 99.9% of the stupid, ignorant motherfuckers who comment on TH-cam videos!

      He went to Catholic high school and then went out on the road. He is very articulate and has spent his life trying to simplify jazz for people at all levels of playing. Just because you don’t get it right off the bat doesn’t mean you can’t have an epiphany some day.
