      I grew up spending a lot of times with my grandparents as a kid. They didn’t have internet or cable. Just an antenna and one station played old TV shows and Lost in Space was one of those shows and forever gave me a love for older cinema. Movies and Tv shows just aren’t as ambitious and shows like Lost in Space

    After the first season, it could have been Re-titled, "The Dr. Smith, Will, and the Robot Show." It suited my quirky sense of humor, but what amazed me was that my Grandmother liked it. Whenever Dr. Smith let out his howl of fright and hid behind Will, the rocker picked up speed, she'd let out with, "Oh, That old fool!" and cackle for half an hour. To this day, I think that was some wonderful.

    With all due respect for the cast of "Lost in Space", Jonathan Harris, made this series work! With his constant barrage of acerbic personal attacks upon the Robot, and the occasional "shot across the bow", at the Major, just a superb staccato of "put-downs", just magical, indeed!........

    I didn't see the show when it aired, but what I've learned what's great about Mr. Harris is that he wanted to be a star, he was a star and he loved enjoying letting everyone know he was and, that he loved being a ham. He was the Shakespeare of modern comedy.
    I was about 6 when this was on, but we only have one TV and you had to "earn" TV time, you didn't just sit down and watch what you wanted. I used my points to watch Zorro, and didn't know for 55 years that he was also in Lost In Space. We had to ask permission to use the phone too and "yes" was not always the answer you got, and no explanation was offered and you didn't ask for one either.
    Like many others, I only saw this in re-runs as an adult. I can see how the show developed around the Dr. and the robot and it's great to know Mr. Harris loved what he was doing and admired by so many, and that he was aware of it. He was much like Mr. Spock in that regard, to become a legend and and icon as both his character and the person.

    'jabbering Judas' is my very favorite. the witty exchanges between Smith and the Robot (more than a moral match to Smith's selfishness) are easily the best thing about the show---Jonathan Harris's bon mots added a needed edge to sickly sweet family space show and raised it to a level that Oscar Wilde (and a discerning audience) delighted in. Beautiful tribute and wonderfully edited--thank you for putting it together! Fun!

    I loved it when the writers or Mr. Harris, allowed the Robot to get bold enough to give an insult back and too finally talk back to the good Dr. Robot: "It is Dr. Smith that is the Bubble headed Booby. snicker, snicker, snicker .""
    When Mr. Harris did his One Man Shows down in Australia for his adoring many fans down there, he, Mr. Harris would open his shows with exchanging insults and dialog with a lit up functioning LIS B-9 Robot unit and the fans young and adult went nuts . On a hysterical interview posted on youtube with talk show host Mr. Conan O"Brien, Mr. Harris told all about his character and the LIS robot and how Mr. Harris would keep a notepad by his bed and would create and write down every single insult for the Robot. It wasn't the writers that created the memorable insults it was Mr. Harris :)

    Thoroughly enjoyed this, Jonathan Harris made the show in my opinion, cant imagine what it would have been like without him , as a kid this was one of my favorite shows (next to Batman) --wish the studio would re-release another (ALL complete in ONE box) DVD set of the entire series like they did with I Love Lucy instead of the available seasons divided into volumes (a HEADACHE) --those "Bobbleheaded Boobies !!! " LOL ! -- Thanks for this collage of Dr. Smith rants , Damn -- I should have held onto my Lost in Space lunchbox from 1968, worth a fortune !

      the show would have been dull as sin without Jonathan Harris. He added tension and pointed humor. The other characters just don't seem real to me--they are all so 'noble'--when Maj. West aside--he was a hothead and that was good.

      At the time, none of the viewers had a clue about the original ending planed for the hungry sea episode, where they return to the Jupiter two to find smith frozen to death, then most likely, it would have ended with his funeral. This is when he sang there's no place like home, with the robot on guitar. After that, completely different show for better or worse.

      He realized early on that the original stock villian wouldn't last very long. He started to stretch the character. When the audience responded positively, Irwin Allen gave him the go ahead to "keep doing it".

      Later in that episode, they're both trying to get about the Jupiter 2 before it lifts off. Dr Smith has his foot stuck in the outer door:
      Smith: "DO something! They're getting ready to blast off! If we don't get inside, we'll be incinerated!"
      Robot:"*I* will be incinerated. YOU will just look silly hanging by your toes in space."

    It's Jonathan Harris as Doctor Smith that kept the series going.
    I think the character's name was inspired by the science-fiction
    author Edward Elmer Smith who signed 'E.E. ''Doc'' Smith'.
    He died in 1965, the same year the series started.

    • @jondunmore4268
      @jondunmore4268 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always wonder how they put the whole package together. I imagine Bob said the words while inside the robot and he made the mouth light up to match his dialogue, and then they overdubbed Dick's voice, which is why the lighted mouth almost always never matches the actual words. But it was such a miniscule mismatch that I don't think it mattered to the producers or to the effect of the Robot's persona.

    • @Arbron
      @Arbron 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Inside the suit he had a "key" of some sort that he would press in time with his dialogue to activate the lights. Apparently this is why you can sometimes see one of the arms moving at the same time.
