This has to be one of the most in-depth reviews I've seen in a while. I use apps like Revit and 3ds max, so I could really relate to this. Amazing work man.
I picked up one of these just the other day for $80, and I can't wait to fix it up - it's in great condition and only missing a few parts! (It has the 1080p screen) This is gonna be my travelling laptop, and I was looking for a good review that wouldn't just be gaming and such. Looking to use it maybe for light blender and autocad, as well as some 2d stuff and occasional gaming. Thanks for the good review!
I can get this laptop refurbished for 800 euro (4k touch, 1000gb ssd, 16gb ram, i7 6820hq). Do you think its worth to buy this laptop in 2020 or is it better to buy a new laptop around the same price?
So, for Adobe CC user, which one should I buy, Xps 15 or Precision ? Last time, I used mac and my graphic card is dead twice. -_- Please gimme some advice. Thanks.
XPS and Precision looks similar. Main difference is Precision is more powerful because you can configure it with lots of options, including configuring it with the same specs as the XPS. With the XPS, you can only choose from the pre-configured models from Dell's website -- those pre-configured models are already very powerful. Without knowing what you do, I think XPS should be sufficient. Here's my Dell XPS review: www.parkablogs.com/content/artist-review-dell-xps-15-laptop-9550-late-2015
Hi Teoh, would you recommend Dell 15 5510 over macbook pro 2015 model as a graphic designer? very good review btw, I just subscribed to your channel. :)
Both are quite comparable in terms of performance. It really comes down to which OS you prefer. I like Mac OS so I would likely choose Macbook Pro. Yes, definitely get the 2015 version instead of the 2016 with all the USB-C ports.
Great review Teoh, just the kind of info I'm looking for. Any experience with the GTX cards vs the Quadro? I'm looking a a Dell Precision or MSI laptop where I can get either a GTX 960m, 970m or 980m or QuadroM? Hows the build quality and reliability of the Dell holding up?
+dcarsondavis Hi, I've no experience with the GTX graphics card so I can't say much. Build quality for this 5510 is very good. It feels very sturdy. I would say it's as solid as the Apple Macbook but not as pretty. Lol.
+dcarsondavis if you want a gtx you go with xps machines which are more for gaming and are meant for that. Quadro is more for Autocad and video encoding, it's a certified program card that goes through rigorous testing. Gtx would be cheaper on xps
Hi Yi Chie, I am looking to get a preowned Dell Precision 5510 and was wondering if the Quadro M100M graphics card can be upgraded to a better version.
Thanks, for your review of the Dell Prec. 15, it is appreciated. I'm wondering if it is a reliable machine over the long run? Recently, I bought two brand new Alienware machines w/PCIe 512GB SSD's and they were both defective. I had to return them for a refund. Thus, I'm getting a bit skeptical of new dell product. Thanks, Ted in the USA.
I'm deciding between this and the XPS 15, I'm an illustrator so I'll mainly be working with huge photoshop and illustrator files, occasionally the rest of the adobe suite. Which one do you think would be my best bet?
+AndyQ I'm not sure if it can be opened up easily. I've since returned the unit so I can't test. Anyway, at least upgrade options direct from Dell is not as expensive and ridiculous compared to Apple.
Hi Teoh, thanks for the awesome review. I've actually watched it a few times over the last 6 months. I have just purchased the newly released 5520. Have you heard much about this upgrade? I would like to know your thoughts about the new graphic card M1200M. I have configured like this: Xeon E3 v6, M1200M quadro card, 1x16gb ram (ability to add another stick later), 1TB SSD, 6 cell battery, non-touch FHD screen. Professional use. solidworks large ASM's and the odd Adobe work. Thanks again, look forward to more good reviews.
+Andre Heller The previous model was a solid performer and the new model is even better. The only other thing I want to add is, for comparison purposes, you are using a laptop that is 2 generations newer than the current Apple MacBook Pro.
"tear your hair off!!!" LOL Thanks for great reviews, with professional overall application!!! Very informative than all the game reviews out there. Thumbs up, subscribed, and liked! x3
Great review very thorough! Would you recommend this for converting Canon raw images ( hundreds of them) to jpegs ( while traveling) or rather the larger Dell 7710 (I would appreciate the larger screen size)
+Chef Duddy Lemberger Personally, I think a 15 inch is good because it's still significantly lighter than a 17inch. As for speed for editing photos, it's not going to be any problem at all.
yea! finally a review thats coming from my pov as an artist too :) No mini adapter port, thats a no go for me with this unit. And the CS6 buttons in minature? yikes. Also the extreme glare looks almost non-usable to me. Has anyone created a non-glare skin for touch monitors similar to what you'd put on a cell phone?? Appreciate the attention to detail in your review , subscribed!
+Tanya Kucey It might be better to just get the 1080P matte screen. I'm currently using a 4K screen at 28 inches and even so I felt that everything looked too small. I won't want to use 4K for work on any screen that is less than 30 inches, and this laptop's screen is only 15.
Hey there! Thank you for your review. :) I'm a mac user (like you) and using the same programs (e.g. Realistic render quality, Adobe creative suite and so forth). Apple MacBooks moved to AMD GPU which seems not being the best cards for creatives (OpenCL vs. OpenGL) thus, the only alternative - if I want to keep MacBook - is buying a 15 inch with 2Go NVidia GT750M on the refurb store. Considering the fact Apple has a stable OS and I'm really used to it, would you recommend to stay on an old technology like MacBook with Intel Haswell i7 @ 2,8Ghz/ NVidia 2Go or move to this Dell 5510 due to its NVidia card and a noticeable large gap in terms of performance (render time, AfterEffects, video editing, etc...) and technology? As far as we are both creatives and you know both OS and tested this Dell, your answer will be highly considered. Cheers ;)
First thing is to check whether the programs you currently use on the Mac are also available on Windows. The Dell 5510 is very powerful and will be faster at rendering compared to the Mac. However, Apple's announcing new computers on 27 Oct 2016 so you might want to wait and see what they have to offer. Having said that, I'm pretty sure the Dell 5510 is still going to be as powerful even though it has been out for months. My tests on the Dell 5510 isn't really scientific, but when compared to my 2 years old Mac Pro Quad 3.7Ghz with Dual D300 FirePro, the Dell 5510 only lags behind slightly, so that says a lot about how powerful that laptop is.
Many thanks for your answer. I know about the Apple's event on October 27th but the brand has reconducted its partnership with AMD which is mainly focused on OpenGL. All good professional workstations keep using NVidia and its OpenCL because pro softwares as Adobe Creative Suite, 3D modeling and rendering are better optimised with CUDA/ OpenCL. A big challenge in my mind. I'm also having a look at the HP Zbook Studio G3 with its NVidia 4Go but to be honest, the design is less attractive. One more time, many thanks Teoh ;) Cheers.
hey Teoh yi chie, i want to know what will for the best laptop for Motion Graphics where in i can run 3d MAX after effects and cd4, Photoshop are the main software tht are run so can u suggest me some a good config notebook
I've no experience with other brands so I'm going to recommend either the Dell Precision, Dell XPS or the ASUS (may be cheaper). Dell Precision would be the best if you have the budget. Just configure it to have SSD storage and at least 16GB RAM, and a larger battery. Since you're running 3D MAX as well, I recommend you check out the specifications recommended by 3D MAX website. Dell Precision & Dell XPS should have no problems.
How can i custom the screen from based to 4K Resolution with Glossy IGZO like this. I was checked in website but i cannot find Option Screen Tab. Could u show me :D Thank you so much, Bro !
It depends on which country you're buying from. For example, USA can customize. Singapore cannot. You might want to contact Dell to find out more details www.dell.com/us/business/p/precision-m5510-workstation/pd?ref=PD_OC
+Teoh Yi Chie Any chance that Dell will get you the Dell Precision 15 3000 (3510) to review as well? I am thinking of getting it because its more budget friendly than the 5510 but there are no reviews of it out there! Not even an unboxing video at the time of this post! :O
Hi. Thanks for you review! Is this laptop still worth buying in 2024 for 400$? Specs are: Core i7 6820HQ Quadro M1000m 16gb ram 4K monitor I heard that precision has serious thermal issue problems. I want to use it for music production and video editing which are CPU and GPU intensive tasks. Thanks in advance for your help and kindness
I recommend you look for a secondhand M1 Macbook Air which will provide way better user experience. This Dell laptop is really old by today's standards
Is it going to have a new release of precision series soon ? as I see it has been out for almost a year already. ( I don't know how workstation product cycle last ).
+Suchart Ouypornchaisakul This laptop actually came out in the first quarter of 2016 so it's quite new. Anyway, the quad core specs is pretty good. Just for comparison, I have a Mac Mini from 2012 that runs quad 2.6ghz and even today I still find that really fast, and it's quite fast at rendering video too. This Dell default is quad 2.3ghz so its speed is also very good. The speed will outlast the battery and screen life that's for sure.
Teoh Yi Chie Thank you so much for the answer, Teoh Yi Chie. I am considering to buy one and your review helps me a lot. The design of 5510 is so beautiful. Can I ask one more stupid question ? Do you think going for gaming version Inspiron 7559 with GTX 960M would have very big difference ? The GTX 960M has 4 GB of Ram but M1000M has only 2. ( I work as an architect and am going to study for a master in UK in this Sep and looking for a powerful Laptop, The 5510 costs twice as much as 7559. I don't know does it worth invest for the cost ) Thank you so much again.
The performance is going to be quite similar. Main difference to me will be the weight. Precision is 2.1kg vs Inspiron 2.7kg. Graphics card memory of 2GB is more then sufficient for 3D work. Perhaps gaming might need more. If you want to save cost, you can get Precision but change the storage to 256gb storage, 16gb RAM but get the slower but still fast quad core 2.3Ghz, and increase the battery to 6 cell. Then compare with the Inspiron again. As for screen resolution, you may not need 4K so that will cut down the cost also.
hi Teoh! I'm an architecture student which means using revit and autocad all the time. I'm thinking to save some bucks by getting i7, Pcle 256SSD, 6cell battery. Plus, I had 1tb WD External HD. You think it will work for me? Idk what diff between 7000 and 5000 series besides their weights. or any models else that you would recommend me to consider? thanks much!
5000 series should be good enough. Your listed specifications is fast. I recommend getting the Xeon processor if your budget allows for it. Dell 7000 series can be configured to even higher specs.
Hello Teoh, I am a young graphic designer and will like to invest in a laptop and other accessories to start my business. I have watched many videos to support my selection. I ask which laptop(s) and accessories will you recommend for me to buy. I have fallen in love with the xps 15. watcha say about it
How's the power of the GPU? What I know so far, it's only a graphic chip, but the 7510 has a full video card, which is also upgradeable. Is the M1000M working great? Had you anytimes any problem? I am gonna buy one of them and I can't decide. It's for 3D modeling so the video card is for me wery important.
+David S. Well, that graphics "chip" and the 2.8Ghz Xeon Quad core is around 20% slower than my 2013 Mac Pro Quad 3.7Ghz with dual Firepro D300. I say that is very powerful for a laptop. You can't go wrong. Note the 4K screen resolution which you may not need.
So, it doesn't support pressure sensitivity? If not I need some help, I would like a convertible or detachable laptop with enough power (probably 8gb of ram, i5 6200u, this is because of the price) that supports active pen pressure sensitivity on a 15" screen to use it mainly for photoshop and nebo app that was just released on the windows store since I'm planning to handwrite a book. Any thoughts? help? please?
+Ahgwenas At the same clock speed, the difference is not significant. However, when I was using a Dell XPS i7 6700hq quad 2.6-3.5ghz and Precision Xeon quad 2.8-3.7ghz, Maya rendered 20% faster on Xeon. Mine is just one use case. So if the price difference is not too much, I will go with the Xeon.
+ASHISH PANDA Depends on what the student is going to do with it. This is a high end laptop that's also very expensive. I am sure it is going to be more than powerful enough for student work, but perhaps student work do not need this kind of power.
Do you think this laptop is worth 800 Euros right now, preowned in good condition? Here are the specifications: Intel i7 6820HQ 2.7GHz 256 SSD (NVMe) + 500 SSHD 16GB RAM Nvidia Quadro M1000M (2GB) 15.6 inch 4k touch screen, UltraSharp PremierColor Infinity Edge Do you think this is a good buy at this moment?
Please let me know for engineering program for example all Autocads programs ,sap, etabs ...etc. which one is good dell precision 5510 or 5520 or xps 15 9570 or xps 13 9370 ?
+bait47 You cannot fit both SSD and big battery. Big battery can only go with PCIe storage. It's either these options PCIe + 6-cell battery PCIe + SSD + 3-cell battery SSD + 3-cell battery
If you reduce the resolution, Photoshop panels will get larger. However, that defeats the purpose of getting the high resolution screen. It's very troublesome to hvae to change resolution everytime you want to work on Photoshop that way. The other option is to spend money to upgrade Photoshop to to the latest CC version. For this particular 4K screen, the Adobe RGB is 100% so that's excellent for photo & video editing. Note the screen's reflection though. As for the 1080P screen, it only mentions 77% colour gamut and I'm not sure if that refers to sRGB or Adobe RGB.
Hi you said the quadro GPU is slightly better than the GTX960m. Is this type of laptop suitable for gaming ? Are there any pros/cons of going for a mobile workstation as opposed to a specific gaming laptop ? i want something to game on but also do photo editing and maybe video in the future.
+kiwibiwi I can't really comment on gaming performance since I don't play games. Compared to specific gaming laptops, I was told their ventilation is better.
+kiwibiwi the difference between a workstation and a gaming laptop is the graphics card. The quadro is designed to render 3D Models, videos, etc. better/faster/whatever than your typical graphics card. It's a workhorse to create content. A gaming GPU is designed for visual experience. The most noticeable difference is framerate. If you're a content creator, consider the workstation. If you're a gamer, stick with gaming machines.
+David Tong The GPU in this, the Quadro M1000M, is the exact same one as a GTX 950M, the only difference is the driver, which is optimized for stability instead of performance. It doesn't do anything a GeForce can't, and it doesn't even have more or ECC VRAM like a desktop version would.
+Folopolis I appreciate the correction! Maybe my perception of computer terminology is misguided. My understanding was that the hardware was all the same but the software is what makes the difference. I've been informed that you could potentially softmod cards to run as you would have them but..being a lay-consumer I don't have the confidence or experience with code to conduct a software modification. But to better understand your point: Are the cards (with their unique drivers) capable of the tasks expected of them in a gaming vs. rendering environment?
David Tong Short answer, yes, the difference is software. This will play games roughly the same as a GTX 950m (which isn't good enough given how much it costs). A GTX 950m will run CAD and DCC roughly the same as this. Generally, the GeForce will be slightly faster, with the Quadro you will have fewer issues and if you do have one you will be a higher priority with support. You used to be able to convince a Quadro driver to install with a GeForce card, but they seem to have done away with that. With the GeForce 700 series there was a diode that you could physically short to change the hardware ID number such that the Quadro driver would install, but I haven't heard anything of the sort with the 900 series.
+Leonidas Savvides If you are using the older Adobe CS 5 or 6 and have no intention to upgrade, get the 1080P for reasons mentioned in the video. This computer is more than powerful for your needs. You might want to check out the XPS 15 also because it is quite similar. You can get whatever that is cheaper. XPS has less customization.
+Rahul Mourya True, but the Intel graphics display adapter only supports 2 4K and a 1080p, it may or may not be counting the built in display depending on how they have it set up.
Price difference depends on what's inside the laptop. Main difference between Dell Precision vs XPS is the Precision is more configurable whereas you can only choose XPS from the configurations already chosen for you (with minor changes). So Precision can be more expensive. Here's my article on the comparison www.parkablogs.com/content/artist-first-impression-dell-xps-vs-precision-workstation-laptop
Hi Teoh! I am an animation undergrad student and I was wondering if I were to get this, is it good as is or do I need to customize it with these uses (as these may take a lot of memory/RAM & space): -3dsMax -Maya -ZBrush -Photoshop -Music Production -1080p Video rendering and Film Production -Occasional Gaming from Steam
Yes. It renders 3D very fast for a laptop. Definitely not as fast as desktop, but should be the fastest among laptops, at least at the time I tested it.
+ASHISH PANDA Check out these two articles www.parkablogs.com/content/best-computer-or-laptop-photoshop-graphic-design www.parkablogs.com/picture/best-laptop-artists-and-graphic-design-2015-selection
since Dell rates this as a "Precision" laptop, does it have any "Precision" characteristic like spill & dust proof, shock resistant, etc...? or is it just a lower class laptop rebranded into a "workstation" class? because when it comes to workstation laptops, high specs is only one side of the situation.
hi, i need dell 14-15 inch, not for games but for my research work. my concern is that laptop should be light and economical so please recommend me any model which u think is best for me.
Depends on which 3D software you are using. Just go to the 3D software website to see what specifications they recommend. Some will recommend Quadro graphics card. For those that don't recommend the Quadro, XPS should still be sufficient for running them.
***** If you do a lot of video encoding, 3D rendering, go for the i7 which is faster, or even the Xeon. If you only render once in a while, and your work is not time sensitive, you can save money with the i5.
+Max Rosenblad The Windows UI fix only fixes Windows' look, not the look of the software. For example, it will not scale up the tiny fonts and controls in Adobe CS6 and older software.
+Teoh Yi Chie yes but if I run full hd resolution in a 4k screen all the programs will run as if the screen was full hd ans see the software menus properly? thank you very much for your attention
that they come defective!lots of their units start to have issues after a while.i heard even some of the xps 15 didnt recognize their own drivers.the screen issues!i dont know if its a windows 10 issue or its dells fault.but if im investing 2000 dollars on a computer i want to be sure first.
Those issues you described are driver issues and issues with the bios preinstalled. The issues have since been ironed out through updates. Be sure to update your system and also the firmware (bios/uefi) if applicable.
+Ahmad Aziz The 1080P is matte if I remember correctly. No point using matte for the 4K screen as it would affect the colour reproduction (slightly though).
It is taking more than 2 hours to render 8 minutes 1080 60p video at my precision m5510, My specs are i7 6800HQ, 32gb Ram, 512 SSD Hynix Nvme, 2Gb M Quadro graphics card. Please tell me why is it taking so long, previously render was faster. Thanks
+Subir Thapa That is weird. I no longer have the m5510. But your video length should not need that long to render. Maybe you should ask at Adobe forums and see what others say.
Nope, that option is not available with Dell. People buy this laptop because of the Quadro graphics card. If you need GTX, there are other brands that provide that option.
@@teohyc well im getting an old one but with decent price Its core i7-6820hq 2.7 Ghz 32 GB Ram DDR4 Quadro m1000m 2GB Will this be a good choise in 2020 Im gonna use it for daily use and to learn 3d graphic design and light programming work So will it work properly for this kind of work smoothly? Im getting it for 870$ And Thanks for your answer ❤
this system is basically meant for workstation kind off work where you do more 3D rendering works and those software's installed on workstations can be used for mobility for demos in sales basically business so think before you buy this
i work with revit and autocad, mine's is 32gb's ram, 256 ssd, 4k, precision 5510, but there is a problem with the size of the comands of those programs, exactly the same you had with photoshop, and is really frustated cause, is a really expensive laptop... it is in the market a graphics amplifier to use in this laptop??, because i work with lumion also, and it doesn't work the way i espected
+Bayron Aleman That is the problem with 4K that most people are not aware of, especially software compatibility. If you can return it to exchange for 1080P, consider that.
thanks for your answer , I am that someone who did not know of the problem until I saw your video , can i use the program you use to improve the size of the letters in the commands?
There is a fix for Adobe CS5 and CS6 using manifest files. See www.danantonielli.com/adobe-app-scaling-on-high-dpi-displays-fix/ However, that fix will scale up everything, including artworks resulting in the normal pixelated scaled edges (a problem for vector art).
+Teoh Yi Chie thanks for your help... this is the best review of a product in youtube i have ever seen... is a shame that i saw your video after my laptop's irrival...
+Bayron Aleman Hey man, are you into architecture? I'm looking to buy one of these and wanted to know how's the performance over render times in lumion-revit? Greetings
Thanks for the review the best laptop review on the youtube.no one bothers to test all these programs.cheers

This is the best review of the Dell Precision 5510
Thanks :-)
I enjoy your reviews because you approach laptops from a different angle as an artist.
+Mike Stoddart Thanks 😀
I barely see anyone review Precision laptops. Thanks man!
Welcome ヾ(⌐■_■)ノ♪

Hello , will it be able to work fine if i get a refurbished now in 2020 mainly for 3D softwares like solidworks, NX , fusion360
This should still work but the model shown in this video is from few years ago. You should at least get newer models than this.
@@teohyc thank you very much .

cool review and thanks for it, i might need to get one of this bad boy, is there any higher performance compare to this? cheers!
+infected duck13 This is, and still is, currently among the top performing laptops.
Lol.
+Teoh Yi Chie Thanks again for this review. It's difficult to find good reviews out there from artists!
+dcarsondavis if you want a gtx you go with xps machines which are more for gaming and are meant for that. Quadro is more for Autocad and video encoding, it's a certified program card that goes through rigorous testing. Gtx would be cheaper on xps
!!!!!!!!!
very helpful review, even today. thanks!
This model is so old now
hi may i ask,is there any stylus or touchscreen pen for this laptop, and is it good for touchscreen drawing instead of tablet connected to the laptop?
Touchscreen laptops usually do not work with stylus for drawing. They are designed for finger tapping.
great review, nicely detailed. thanks for sharing.
+Mike McCune Thanks 😁
Hi Yi Chie, I am looking to get a preowned Dell Precision 5510 and was wondering if the Quadro M100M graphics card can be upgraded to a better version.
Not sure about upgrade. But 5510 is very old already. Recent laptops may be cheaper and offer the same performance
Have you ever use the touch screen with Adonit Jot Pro or Mini for note taking etc.?
How is your experience? Thanks
Touchscreen laptops usually do not work with stylus for drawing. They are designed for finger tapping.
How will a 56Wh battery perform for a FHD screen?
Great review btw ;)
+Ken Lin Not sure about that but I suppose it will require less power to drive a lower resolution screen so battery should last longer.
Thanks for the much needed review. How does the keyboard feel?
+William Huang It's good to type on. No complaints.
What's the difference between the new Precision laptops and XPS series? They look quite the same, even spec wise.
+Tony Borisov Difference is only is the graphics card.
+Teoh Yi Chie What about build quality or used materials?
Not sure about that.
To fix this issue you need to use Adobe CC 2015.5 that support the UI scaling. I did try what you have done and I could not stand it.
+Theodore W. Farcasin Hi, I've since returned the review unit so I can't say anything about the reliability.
I'm deciding between this and the XPS 15, I'm an illustrator so I'll mainly be working with huge photoshop and illustrator files, occasionally the rest of the adobe suite. Which one do you think would be my best bet?
+James Brookes The XPS series is good enough for your type of work.
Hi did you buy the XPS? is it good?
I saw a review for the new XPS15 that it easily opens up for replacement of RAM and SSD . Did you notice if the precision unscrews so easily?
+AndyQ I'm not sure if it can be opened up easily. I've since returned the unit so I can't test. Anyway, at least upgrade options direct from Dell is not as expensive and ridiculous compared to Apple.
Great review! I am looking at the 7510 and this helps knowing your opinions!
"tear your hair off!!!" LOL
Thanks for great reviews, with professional overall application!!! Very informative than all the game reviews out there. Thumbs up, subscribed, and liked! x3
good review, thanks for this.
+AndyQ Thanks :-D
+AndyQ Yep, excellent review
Great review very thorough! Would you recommend this for converting Canon raw images ( hundreds of them) to jpegs ( while traveling) or rather the larger Dell 7710 (I would appreciate the larger screen size)
+Chef Duddy Lemberger Personally, I think a 15 inch is good because it's still significantly lighter than a 17inch. As for speed for editing photos, it's not going to be any problem at all.
yea! finally a review thats coming from my pov as an artist too :)
No mini adapter port, thats a no go for me with this unit.
So, does it work better after you change the surface of PS using adobe CC? does the iron look bigger?
The icon should look bigger. Although, I read that it may not be true for other programs in CC.
nice model and graphic!
+anzatzi Thanks 😊
Hey there!
Thank you for your review. :)
I'm a mac user (like you) and using the same programs (e.g.
One more time, many thanks Teoh ;)
Cheers.
hey Teoh yi chie, i want to know what will for the best laptop for Motion Graphics where in i can run 3d MAX after effects and cd4, Photoshop are the main software tht are run so can u suggest me some a good config notebook
Could u show me :D
Thank you so much, Bro !
+Nhan Pham You can only customize that on Dell website
+Teoh Yi Chie yup i check it on dell website :( can you share a me a link
It depends on which country you're buying from. For example, USA can customize. Singapore cannot. You might want to contact Dell to find out more details
www.dell.com/us/business/p/precision-m5510-workstation/pd?ref=PD_OC
+Teoh Yi Chie yah i saw it :) tks so much.
Thanks for posting one of the few reviews out there of this one! How are things so far with the Laptop?
+juki009 I've returned it to Dell already. It's a very powerful laptop if you have the budget to configure.
+Teoh Yi Chie Any chance that Dell will get you the Dell Precision 15 3000 (3510) to review as well? I am thinking of getting it because its more budget friendly than the 5510 but there are no reviews of it out there! Not even an unboxing video at the time of this post! :O
I realized that there is no LED activity indicator when the HDD is being used, were you able to locate it?
There aren't any on this laptop. Actually, I haven't seen those HDD lights on laptops for years.
I am also wondering what is the white strip light in front of the laptop, it just blinks once when I plug in the power !
forum.notebookreview.com/threads/dell-precision-5510-owners-review.784464/ if you visit this website, the 6th image which says status light.
Says in the manual it's the power status light.
Hi. Thanks for you review! Is this laptop still worth buying in 2024 for 400$? Specs are:
Core i7 6820HQ
Quadro M1000m
16gb ram
4K monitor
I heard that precision has serious thermal issue problems.
As for screen resolution, you may not need 4K so that will cut down the cost also.
what are the specs compared to precision 3520 with M.2 and I5 7300HQ 3.4 G
Nice×1.618!
I have fallen in love with the xps 15. watcha say about it
+Emmanuel Ofei XPS 15 is good if you're not going into 3D modeling, gaming. It's a powerful and fast laptop.
Thanks Teoh for your reply, I will be working in 3D modeling and gaming as well, so what is the best model I buy?
I am using a M4800 with a QHD screen and I can relate to a-lot of the graphics issues; you can downgrade the resolution in control panel.
+Aguafria It can be done. But it would not make sense to get the QHD screen in the first place.
Teoh Yi Chie Ok, thanks
So, it doesn't support pressure sensitivity? If not I need some help, I would like a convertible or detachable laptop with enough power (probably 8gb of ram, i5 6200u, this is because of the price) that supports active pen pressure sensitivity on a 15" screen to use it mainly for photoshop and nebo app that was just released on the windows store since I'm planning to handwrite a book. Any thoughts? help? please?
Perhaps you can check out this list www.parkablogs.com/content/surface-pro-4-alternatives-artists-list
Is Xeon significantly faster than i7? (I do a lot of 3D renderings)
Would you recommend it for a gamer like me
Play FIFA and the rest
Attracted to it because of its graphics card
This laptop is kinda old already. There probably are better laptops nowadays at affordable prices.
Excellent review but I want to know if it's good for students...
+ASHISH PANDA Depends on what the student is going to do with it. This is a high end laptop that's also very expensive. I am sure it is going to be more than powerful enough for student work, but perhaps student work do not need this kind of power.
Yeah great option i have this
Hi thank you, do you think the new model 5520 is good for adobe programs? also to premier?
Oh yes. It's more than powerful enough because the previous 5510 model is already very capable.
Do you think this laptop is worth 800 Euros right now, preowned in good condition? Here are the specifications:
Intel i7 6820HQ 2.7GHz
256 SSD (NVMe) + 500 SSHD
16GB RAM
Nvidia Quadro M1000M (2GB)
15.6 inch 4k touch screen, UltraSharp PremierColor Infinity Edge
Do you think this is a good buy at this moment?
For 800 Euros it seems alright. Do compare with other recent laptops because that Dell is a few years old.
Is it recommended to buy in 2022
Please let me know for engineering program for example all Autocads programs ,sap, etabs ...etc. which one is good dell precision 5510 or 5520 or xps 15 9570 or xps 13 9370 ?
If you have the budget, Dell Precision is good. If not Dell XPS is good enough. Main difference is the graphics card and the configurability.
Teoh Yi Chie
Hi thanks for your attention please let me know which one is better dell 5510 or 5520. And in xps model which one 9570 or 9370 .
Can i add an additional SSD(not PCLe) while selecting the 6 cell battery ?(primary HD is PCLe)
+bait47 You cannot fit both SSD and big battery. Big battery can only go with PCIe storage. It's either these options
PCIe + 6-cell battery
PCIe + SSD + 3-cell battery
SSD + 3-cell battery
Teoh Yi Chie thank you
if you reduce the screen resolution... does photoshop panels get larger ? and how cool is the color accuracy for photo and video editing?
If you reduce the resolution, Photoshop panels will get larger. However, that defeats the purpose of getting the high resolution screen. It's very troublesome to hvae to change resolution everytime you want to work on Photoshop that way. The other option is to spend money to upgrade Photoshop to to the latest CC version.
For this particular 4K screen, the Adobe RGB is 100% so that's excellent for photo & video editing. Note the screen's reflection though. As for the 1080P screen, it only mentions 77% colour gamut and I'm not sure if that refers to sRGB or Adobe RGB.
+Teoh Yi Chie thanks Bro..
sir .. this model still worthy to use now in 2021 ? i get cheaper price for this laptop
No because it’s really old now. Get the recent laptops
请问播主你的M5510玩OVERWACTH运行如何,什么画质下FPS大约是多少?希望能得到解答
In 2021 Dell precision 5520 still worth it for adobe premiere?
I've not tried 5520 so I can't say much. Anyway, get laptops with the 11th gen Intel processors. Those are good for video editing.
And
what about fan noise ? is it strong ? or a rather silent computer when used for maya and intensive tasks ?
It's pretty standard fan noise. It will be loud when doing processor intensive tasks, typically tasks relating to rendering and video editing.
Thank you for the insanely quick response ;) !
this is ok to buy for app, web and graphic design/development ? also running 2-4 VMs ? what screen opt for this FHD or 4K?
+Leonidas Savvides If you are using the older Adobe CS 5 or 6 and have no intention to upgrade, get the 1080P for reasons mentioned in the video. This computer is more than powerful for your needs. You might want to check out the XPS 15 also because it is quite similar. You can get whatever that is cheaper. XPS has less customization.
If plan use Android or iOS or WP10 emulators [some in VM] for emulate phones of high resolution displays and take shots the 4K is preferred...?
Also emulate tablets like ipad resolution over 2000px
In that case, a 4K screen might be useful.
Hi Teoh, for your knowledge Thunderbolt 3 port can transfer data up to 2 4K screens.
+Rahul Mourya Wow. That's good to know. Thanks😀
+Rahul Mourya True, but the Intel graphics display adapter only supports 2 4K and a 1080p, it may or may not be counting the built in display depending on how they have it set up.
What's the price difference between this and the XPS 15? And does this compare to the XPS 15?
Price difference depends on what's inside the laptop. Main difference between Dell Precision vs XPS is the Precision is more configurable whereas you can only choose XPS from the configurations already chosen for you (with minor changes). So Precision can be more expensive. Here's my article on the comparison www.parkablogs.com/content/artist-first-impression-dell-xps-vs-precision-workstation-laptop
With that specs, have you ever got the overheating problem?
No overheating. Fans are good
can this laptop be helpful for designing softwares like soliworks ?
There should be no problem.
Hi Teoh! I am an animation undergrad student and I was wondering if I were to get this, is it good as is or do I need to customize it with these uses (as these may take a lot of memory/RAM & space):
-3dsMax
-Maya
-ZBrush
-Photoshop
-Music Production
-1080p Video rendering and Film Production
-Occasional Gaming from Steam
Just customize it in the following order depending on your budget. 1. SSD storage. 2. 16GB RAM. 3. Bigger Battery capacity. 4. Processor speed.
Hi, can this laptop handle well on 3D max, vray rendering? Thanks
Yes. It renders 3D very fast for a laptop. Definitely not as fast as desktop, but should be the fastest among laptops, at least at the time I tested it.
Thank You sit but which laptop should I get...
+ASHISH PANDA Check out these two articles
www.parkablogs.com/content/best-computer-or-laptop-photoshop-graphic-design
www.parkablogs.com/picture/best-laptop-artists-and-graphic-design-2015-selection
Did you get laptop? what did you choos?e?
Is 4gb graphic increase rendering speed? I mean i want to know that high capacity gpu increase rendering speed
I noticed the SD caed doesn't spring in all the way like in other Dell laptops.
Some SD card slots have spring, some do not.
xps is not available in my country so i want buy precision 15 5510 does it able to play like call of duty
can i play call of duty like games in precision 15 5510
Then you can go ahead to get the Precision, just that it's more expensive. It can play games as well.
since Dell rates this as a "Precision" laptop, does it have any "Precision" characteristic like spill & dust proof, shock resistant, etc...? or is it just a lower class laptop rebranded into a "workstation" class? because when it comes to workstation laptops, high specs is only one side of the situation.
hi, i need dell 14-15 inch, not for games but for my research work. my concern is that laptop should be light and economical so please recommend me any model which u think is best for me.
You can go for the XPS 15.
Teoh Yi Chie For 3d design, would it be better to get this or the new XPS 13 model?
Depends on which 3D software you are using. Just go to the 3D software website to see what specifications they recommend. Some will recommend Quadro graphics card. For those that don't recommend the Quadro, XPS should still be sufficient for running them.
I’m not a gamer I see this laptop at good deal $700 should I get it or a newer one
I have 2 questions for you!
Machine can run hot?
How much battery life?
Battery life for the 6-cell (81Wh) battery is between 5 to 6 hours. Yes it gets hot when you're doing processor intensive work
+Teoh Yi Chie Hi Chie!
I come from Vietnam, I want to buy products please tell me your distributor in Vietnam dell computers.
***** That I don't know, sorry. You have to check their website
Performance Core i5 vs i7 6820HQ 6300HQ like is that?
***** If you do a lot of video encoding, 3D rendering, go for the i7 which is faster, or even the Xeon. If you only render once in a while, and your work is not time sensitive, you can save money with the i5.
Laptop in this review, resolution is 4k or 1080p ?
+Ben Ci 4K
well,its so surprise!
There is an option in windows to fix the ui, will that fix the issue?
+Max Rosenblad The Windows UI fix only fixes Windows' look, not the look of the software. For example, it will not scale up the tiny fonts and controls in Adobe CS6 and older software.
teoh can you change the screen resolution to see the menus buttoms properly or you have to buy a non 4k screen to see it properly?
+mlc0092 Windows menus are alright. Software menus will have to depend on whether they support such high resolution.
+Teoh Yi Chie yes but if I run full hd resolution in a 4k screen all the programs will run as if the screen was full hd ans see the software menus properly? thank you very much for your attention
+mlc0092 If you run at 1080P, all the menus will be bigger.
Ghhhh
Does it work with the Dell Active Pen/Stylus?
+Nels Nelson No
Dell Precision 3520 PM-RD33-10051
Asus GL553VE-FY124T
Hey what a better computer for video editing???
Thanks
Both looks quite similar to me. Whichever you get, get it with 16GB ram, 1080P IPS panel and SSD storage.
Thank you very much!
Which company you think is better??
I think both brands quite similar. I would go for the company that can provide extended warranty on the laptops.
Everyone gives the same thing 3 years lol:)
!!!! Anyway thank you very much
Im hearing very negative opinions about this laptop and the dell xps 15!!! Does anyone know if there are solutions or have they fix it yet?
Like what negative comments?
that they come defective!lots of their units start to have issues after a while.i heard even some of the xps 15 didnt recognize their own drivers.the screen issues!i dont know if its a windows 10 issue or its dells fault.but if im investing 2000 dollars on a computer i want to be sure first.
Those issues you described are driver issues and issues with the bios preinstalled. The issues have since been ironed out through updates. Be sure to update your system and also the firmware (bios/uefi) if applicable.
can i buy dell precision 15 5510 instead of dell xps 15
You can buy from Dell's website. Precision offers more customisation compared to XPS.
i also some games like counter strike go does precision 15 5510 able to run some game
Yes it can. For gaming, it's cheaper to get XPS, perhaps upgrade the storage to SSD to make it faster.
Can you add matte to the display?
My NVIDIA control panel gets reset automatically
I'm thinking of buying the 5520 do you think it's worth it?
I guess for Video and Photo and Designing not Heavy 3D or 3D Modelling videos , The GTX versions are quite good with 7700HQ processor
I order the 5520 PM-RD33...hope it will go well
Will this or any other laptop support 4K monitor?
Yes it will.
Can this laptop play good with video game such as GTA 5, CS GO?
+Công Thắng Yes, no problem. Those games are not really taking on the graphics card.
Thanks man (y)
Color Gamut of 1080p display?

Teoh Yi Chie Thank you Theo and keep up the good job
Can I upgrade the video card to GTX 1080?
Nope, that option is not available with Dell. People buy this laptop because of the Quadro graphics card. If you need GTX, there are other brands that provide that option.
I mean can I upgrade the video card after I buy it? Is this machine upgradable?
Video card probably not. Storage or RAM possibly yes. www.ihowfix.com/dell-precision-5510-disassembly-ram-ssd-upgrade-guide/
Soo would you recommend this in 2020?
Yes if you get the updated model
@@teohyc well im getting an old one but with decent price

Can i buy this laptop as student..
Depending on where you are, you might have to contact Dell directly to buy.
Teoh Yi Chie i am from pakistan and studying software engineering.
this system is basically meant for workstation kind off work where you do more 3D rendering works and those software's installed on workstations can be used for mobility for demos in sales basically business so think before you buy this

See www.danantonielli.com/adobe-app-scaling-on-high-dpi-displays-fix/
However, that fix will scale up everything, including artworks resulting in the normal pixelated scaled edges (a problem for vector art).
Greetings
